Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort, a health-focused retreat in downtown Bangkok, is preparing to introduce its in-house guests and local residents to a new era of Thai dining at Khum Hom.

Scheduled to open in January, Khum Hom will deliver a unique new take on Thai cuisine, by recreating authentic and original recipes from the four culinary corners of Thailand: north, northeast, central and south.

The word “khum” is Thai for a bite-sized portion, while “hom” means ‘aromatic’, so diners can look forward to a delectable selection of wholesome dishes that are both fragrant and full of flavour.

By focusing on the origins of its ingredients, including responsibly-sourced and organic produce, the restaurant’s highly-skilled culinary team will craft outstanding dining experiences that are dedicated to well-being, while also demonstrating a deep respect for Thailand’s rich culinary heritage.

Khum Hom will become the fifth F&B outlet at Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort, joining Tamarind, the healthy all-day dining restaurant, Rim Klong Café, a canalside bakery and coffee shop, Cinnamon Lobby Bar and Sala Pool Bar.

Magical sunset through the clerestory of Kham Yat Palace

On Monday (December 23) at 5pm, hundreds of Ang Thong residents went to see the sun set behind the clerestory of Kham Yat Palace, creating a beam of light shining into the ancient ruins that date back to the Ayutthaya era.

The phenomenon only occurs on December during the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. As the sun goes down, the light will shine through the small window above the door onto the red wall of the royal pavilion reflecting the building, thought sadly the colour of the wall has now faded.

This Palace, built in the reign of King Boromakot, was used to be the abode of King Uthumphon, the 33rd and penultimate monarch of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, while he was ordained as a monk. He stayed for a period of time before returning to Wat Pradu Songtham. The Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya mention that King Uthumphon was asked to leave the monkhood and take over government to help fight the Burmese incursion.

At present only the four walls of an elevated one-floor royal residence remain. These are made of brick and mortar and measuring 20 meters long by 10 meters wide. The roof is in ancient architectural style, very rarely seen nowadays. It located in the area of abandoned temple, Wat Pho Thong.

The Fine Arts Department renovated and listed the palace as an ancient monument on 8 March 1935.

The phenomenon can also be seen today (December 24) at 5 pm.

A total sum of US$225,000 will be channelled towards each Cash Distribution Committee of the affected prefectures and Tokyo Metropolitan government through the Japanese Red Cross Society with focus on relief and recovery efforts in Japan, which was hit by several typhoons in recent months.

Subsequently, First Tee Japan will receive US$25,000 for use towards its initiatives where the organisation’s mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programmes that build character, instil life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Defending Champion and World No. 2 Sung Hyun Park has confirmed she will compete at next year’s HSBC Women’s World Championship when it returns to the New Tanjong Course at Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore from 27 February to 1 March 2020.

During the course of her three years on the LPGA circuit, the supremely talented 26-year-old has secured seven LPGA titles including two majors, namely the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2018 Women’s PGA Championship.

Her win at this year’s HSBC Women’s World Championship, where she shot the lowest round of the tournament with an eight-under-par final round to claim a two-shot victory over second placed Minjee Lee, re-established Park at the top of the Rolex World Rankings. Following victory in Singapore, she went on to clinch the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G in June and has achieved a total of seven top-10 finishes in 2019 to date.

The 26-year-old trailblazer announced her arrival on the LPGA Tour back in 2017 and has been turning heads ever since. In her rookie year, Park made the cut in all 23 events she competed in and became a Rolex First-Time Winner at the U.S. Women’s Open. Her phenomenal start to life as an LPGA player saw her take home both the Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year awards in the same year – a feat last achieved by Nancy Lopez in 1978. She also became the fastest player in LPGA history to reach $2 million in career earnings in just 19 starts at seven months and 13 days.

Park said: “I’m excited to return to Singapore next year to defend my title at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. It was an exhilarating final day this year and I managed to put in a strong final round to take the championship.’

‘The HSBC Women’s World Championship is one of my favourite events on the tour and it always feels like one of the majors because of the calibre of competition. I was lucky to have a lot of support out on course this year so I’m looking forward to seeing the fans and getting back out next February.”

Looking ahead to the 2020 tournament, Tony Cripps, CEO, HSBC Singapore, commented: “We are thrilled that Sung Hyun Park will defend her title with us at the 2020 edition of the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. Sung Hyun is a special talent and a wonderful ambassador for the game.   As a business we believe that when people come together incredible things can happen.  Hosting this tournament in one of HSBC’s most important international hubs showcases our firm commitment to Singapore and women in sport. We are truly proud of our role in bringing world class golf to Singapore.  The event has become an unmissable fixture on Singapore’s sporting and social calendars, inspiring all who attend.

Sung Hyun has remarkable support everywhere she goes including here in Singapore and we look forward to welcoming Sung Hyun and her loyal group of fans back to Sentosa as she aims to become the first player to successfully defend her HSBC Women’s World Championship title.   Such an early announcement to confirm one of the world’s best players is yet again testament to the strength of ‘Asia’s Major’.”

Further endorsing the tag ‘Asia’s Major’, host venue Sentosa Golf Club was voted the World’s Best Golf Club at the annual World Golf Awards in Abu Dhabi at the end of October. Besides the stellar action on the course, spectators can look forward to four days of unmissable, off-course entertainment, underpinning the tournament’s standing as one of the most fun events on the LPGA schedule.

Electrification of mobility can help your children breathe greener air

Did you know that just one EV is able to reduce 4.5 metric tons of greenhouse gases a year (footnote 1), equal to growing up 205 trees?

As the festive season approaches, I have taken time to pause and reflect on what my New Year’s resolution should be.

As a father of two children, I truly want to be part of creating a greener and a low-carbon society – not just for them but for all of us – a world where everyone, everywhere can breathe clean air without having to worry about the health risks associated with pollution.

But we are sadly a long way from that goal. Sadly, more people are dying from air pollution related disease than from road traffic injuries or malaria (footnote 2).

Some 91 per cent of the world’s population also lives in places where air pollution quality exceeds the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guideline limits, with over 4.2 million deaths globally every year as a result of exposure to outdoor air pollution (footnote 3).

This year alone, Thailand has twice seen the return of PM2.5 fine dust particles in many cities, spiking

to unhealthy levels, and a myriad of solutions are needed for the long-term management of these air pollutants.

Construction of infrastructure and property developments, as well as traffic congestion, are considered to be the root cause of this air pollution – a major environmental health problem affecting not just Thailand but many other low, middle, and high-income countries.

This recurring environmental issue is now being addressed at the national level, with the Thai government agreeing on an action plan to tackle air pollution – but both public and private sectors also need to unite on solutions to ensure long-term improvement.

And I believe that the introduction of the all-new Nissan LEAF, a full-battery Electric Vehicle, together with the upcoming debut of our e-POWER technology, will help millions of people breathe better air.

Why do I say this? Did you know that just one EV can save approximately 4.5 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year? To put this in perspective, one mature tree can offset as much as 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, which means that the benefits of one EV is equal to that of 205 trees (footnote 4).

Nissan, with our mission to sell 1 million EVs annually, will jointly save the planet 4.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gases each year by 2022, which translates to some 2.05 billion trees planted.

That is in addition to the 810 million metric tons of greenhouse gases already saved – equal to 369 billion trees – that EVs across the industry have already saved the planet (footnote 5).

This truly shows the huge positive impact EVs can have on reducing air pollution. Nissan, as the global EV leader with more than 430,000 Nissan LEAF sold globally, and our LEAF owners, jointly save 3.8 million barrels of oil every year, or one million metric tons of CO2, thus. In addition, we aim for 90% reduced product CO2 emissions by 2050.

In the past five years, global battery-only electric vehicle sales have increased 23-fold and, last year alone, global cumulative passenger EV sales surpassed 4 million (footnote 6) .

And whereas it took the industry six years to collectively sell the first million electric cars, it now takes only six months on average sell a million zero-emission vehicles (footnote7).

The EV sector’s disruption is in overdrive, with a Deloitte report on EVs projecting that we may reach the tipping point where EVs sales can begin to overtake traditional cars within the next three years.

Another of Nissan’s important steps towards achieving its zero-emission vision lies in Nissan’s e-POWER technology, arriving on Thai roads in the near future. Nissan’s e-POWER electrified powertrain system utilizes a gasoline engine to charge the high-output battery, giving the driver a 100% electric driving experience and leading to better fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared with a traditional internal combustion engine.

I wholeheartedly support Thailand’s electrification goal of 1.2 million EVs on the road by 2036, and Nissan is playing out part here: we expect 25% of all Nissan vehicles sold in the A&O region to be electrified by 2022 . And, at a global level, Nissan has also announced plans to introduce eight new pure electric vehicle models and a goal of selling one million electric vehicles annually by 2022.

So, as we move towards the holiday season, I would like to invite you to join with me in resolving to change our behaviour and committing to doing our part to help create cleaner air in our cities for us, our children, and generations to come.

“This upcoming new live-show portrays how angels and animals of the Himmapan forest fight to protect the Amarit (holy water) from the Demon, yet they are unable to tackle him. The audience will marvel at the live show created with contemporary Thai art, fusing multimedia elements and a stunning light and sound show delivered with advanced world-class techniques. Large robotic puppets are featured using projection mapping that radiates onto a gigantic mountain. It’s not only entertaining, but the show also inspires the audience with its philosophy, showing how good definitely conquers evil,” he added.

Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick will resign from the company’s board of directors at the end of this year, marking a final exit for the tech entrepreneur who helped launch the ride share start up 10 years ago and grew it into a Silicon Valley giant.

On Tuesday, Uber said Kalanick would leave the board “to focus on his new business and philanthropic endeavors,” though it did not cite specifics. Kalanick resigned as the company’s chief executive in 2017 after several chaotic months that ended in a shareholder revolt. That resignation also came in the wake of a series of scandals tied to Uber’s aggressive workplace culture.

“Uber has been a part of my life for the past 10 years,” Kalanick said in a statement. “At the close of the decade, and with the company now public, it seems like the right moment for me to focus on my current business and philanthropic pursuits.”

Kalanick had been winding down his shares of the company. In the past few weeks, Kalanick sold more than $2.5 billion in Uber stock, comprising more than 90 percent of his stake.

Investors will be glad to see Kalanick and Uber part ways, especially given the company’s financial tumble since its initial public offering in May, Daniel Ives of Wedbush Securities wrote in an analyst note.

“With ripping the band-aid off and Travis leaving stage left on the Board, we believe now its about [CEO Dara Khosrowshahi] & Co. taking Uber in the right direction for 2020 and beyond after a rough road so far,” Ives wrote.

In March 2018, Kalanick announced the creation of an investment fund dubbed 10100 that would be “home to my passions, investments, ideas and big-bets.” At the time, Kalanick said the investments would focus on large-scale job creation and that the portfolio would encompass real estate, e-commerce and emerging technologies in China and India. He said he would also work on nonprofit projects surrounding education and the future of cities.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Kalanick was also leaning into real estate and the food-delivery business. Through CloudKitchens, Kalanick aims to build commissary kitchens that can be used by food-delivery businesses. The idea is for restaurants to rent kitchen space in industrial buildings to make it cheaper for them to get food out to customers via Uber drivers and other delivery services.

Sony Corp. is working around the clock to manufacture its in-demand image sensors, but even a 24-hour operation hasn’t been enough.

For the second straight year, the Japanese company will run its chip factories constantly through the holidays to try and keep up with demand for sensors used in mobile phone cameras, according to Terushi Shimizu, the head of Sony’s semiconductor unit. The electronics giant is more than doubling its capital spending on the business to 280 billion yen ($2.6 billion) this fiscal year and is also building a new plant in Nagasaki that will come online in April 2021.

“Judging by the way things are going, even after all that investment in expanding capacity, it might still not be enough,” Shimizu said in an interview at the Tokyo headquarters. “We are having to apologize to customers because we just can’t make enough.”

It’s now common to see three lenses on the back of a phone as manufacturers lean on camera specs as a hard number to nudge customers into upgrading. The latest models from Samsung Electronics Co. and Huawei Technologies Co. boast resolutions in excess of 40 megapixels, can capture ultrawide-angle images and come with depth sensors. Apple Inc. this year joined the fray with a triple-camera iPhone 11 Pro. That’s why even as smartphone market growth plateaus, Sony’s sales of image sensors continue to soar.

“The camera has become the biggest differentiator for smartphone brands and everyone wants their social media pictures and videos to look nice,” said Masahiro Wakasugi, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. “Sony is riding that wave of demand very well.”

Semiconductors are now Sony’s most profitable business after the PlayStation. The company in October raised its operating income outlook for the chip unit 38% to 200 billion yen in the year ending March 2020, after second-quarter profit jumped by almost 60%. Sony forecasts revenue from its semiconductor division will climb 18% to 1.04 trillion yen, of which image sensors account for 86%.

The company has also been plowing a lot of the profit right back into the business with plans to invest about 700 billion yen ($6.4 billion) in the three-year period ending March 2021. Most of the spending will go to boosting monthly output capacity of image sensors to 138,000 wafers from about 109,000 now. Samsung, Sony’s biggest rival in this space, said at its most recent earnings call that it’s also boosting production to meet demand, which it expects will remain strong “for quite some time.”

Sony in May said it controls 51% of the image sensor market as measured by revenue and is targeting a 60% share by fiscal 2025. Shimizu estimates Sony’s portion of the pie grew by a few percentage points this year alone.

Like many important technological breakthroughs of the late 20th century — from the transistor to lasers and photovoltaic cells — image sensors were invented at Bell Laboratories. But it was Sony who succeeded in commercializing the so-called charge-coupled devices. Its first product was an “electronic eye” installed on All Nippon Airways jumbo jets in 1980 to project images of landing and takeoff from the cockpit. Kazuo Iwama, who as a vice president was key to pushing through the initial decade-long development slog, passed away before the successful launch of the camcorder business in 1985. Iwama’s tombstone bears a CCD sensor to mark his contribution.

Sony is now looking to a new generation of sensors that can see the world in three dimensions. The company uses a method called time of flight that sends out invisible laser pulses and measures how long they take to bounce back to create detailed depth models. This helps mobile cameras create better portrait photos by more precisely selecting the background to blur out, and it can also be applied in mobile games, where virtual characters can be shown realistically interacting with real-world environments. If used on the front of the phone, TOF sensors allow for hand gestures and facial motion capture for animated avatars.

Samsung and Huawei have already unveiled flagship models with 3-D sensors. Apple is rumored to introduce a 3-D camera to its lineup in 2020. Shimizu declined to comment on specific customers, but said Sony is ready to meet what it expects will be a significant increase in demand next year.

“This was the year zero for time of flight,” Shimizu said. “Once you start seeing interesting applications of this technology, it will motivate people to buy new phones.”
