Bueng Boraphet, a semi-natural lake in Nakhon Sawan province, is now crowded with several species of migratory birds, especially diving ducks, that have flown in from the Himalaya mountains.

Bueng Boraphet, or Boraphet Marsh, is the largest freshwater swamp and lake in Thailand. It is spread over more than 200 square kilometres in Nakhon Sawan province and is home to almost 200 species of wild animals, birds and plants.

Waterbirds are obviously the main reason for bird-watchers to visit Bueng Boraphet, as they are making a comeback in Thailand. Now the spotlight is on the flock of many foreign ducks such as the rare red-crested Pochard, large Indian spot-billed duck, Northern Shoveler, etc. All the photos were taken on December 20-21.

With the cold weather in the North of Thailand drawing thousands of migratory birds, this is a great time of the year for birdwatching.

Those interested in birdwatching can rent a boat, which can accommodate 10 people, for Bt500 per hour. It is best to head to the birdwatching park area. Viewers should use a birdwatching telescope and keep 500 metres away from the birds, as they are sensitive and easily scared.

Krabi’s salt spring a natural wonder of the world

Dec 22. 2019

Hundreds of tourists are flocking to a salt spring in the Khlong Thom district of Krabi to enjoy its warmth amid the cool atmosphere. Some 300-500 people every day visit the Khlong Thom salt spring, a famous tourist attraction Krabi province, one of only two in the world.

Some people come to get rid of fatigue, while some with more serious problems like paralysis undergo physical therapy by submerged in the water for several days. The exercise reportedly helps the nerves to relax.

The salt spring in Khlong Thom is a natural phenomenon caused by the combination of hot water and seawater being pushed to the soil surface. There are only two such places in the world: in the Khlong Thom district of Krabi province and another in the Czech Republic. More than 1,000 tourists come every day during long holidays or festivals. Originally, the salt pond of this spring was located amid a forest. Villagers in the area came to soak in the hot water for treatment. About five years ago, the district administration improved the area to make it more convenient for people and began collecting a fee for the development of the district area.

There is a spring pond called Boa Mae [Mother pond], a source of hot springs, with temperature at around 47 degrees Celsius. However, visitors are not allowed to dip themselves in the water. They are only allowed to take the water with a ladle or cup.

Villagers believe that the salt infusion spring helps treat skin diseases, cures knee pain, joint pain and even paralysis. Regular soaking slowly tackles the symptoms. Villagers believe the mother pond is a sacred well for drinking and bathing and helps recover from disease. In the past, those who recovered from a disease used to come to offer their respects by tying a seven-coloured cloth on the tree or released a number of local chickens to keep a promise.

Before entering the salt spring, one must wash one’s body at a shower available around the pond. The soaking time should not be more than 5-10 minutes, and those with chronic illnesses like blood pressure should consult a doctor.

After soaking, shower again in freshwater. The spring opens from 5am to 8pm every day. Thai people are charged Bt20 for adults and Bt10 for children while foreigners pay Bt100.

Saruda said that her dyeing style is called Shibori, using rocks to make colour patterns. They have both taught their dyeing techniques for 3-4 years, charging only Bt2,500-3,500.

Maka Brand created by Suchada Khlongnakrop, a former programer, has received four stars from One Tambon One Product. The shop sells bags, baskets and key rings. All products are decorated with animal-shaped leather.

Maka also has hemp fabric hats and keychains, which have drawn the attention of foreign tourists.

Ban Nok Hook (House of Owls) provides fancy keychains in the shape of an owl, a lucky mascot for Japanese people. The brand was named after traditional network communities in Chom Thong district, Bangkok.

Donlapak Thanapan, owner of Ban Nok Hook, wants to distribute the income to communities and decided to hire the elderly to help assemble various parts of keychains.

The products have got very good responses, so the shop is expanding into a new product lines such as key covers, bags and T-shirts.

By Grandmama (Thai Dessert Soap by Grandmama) sells soap products that look like Thai desserts and tells their history.

The owner of the brand, Rungpailin Pinyokaew, chooses only natural ingredients to make soaps as she used to make for her family, bringing joy to her family.

The Ministry of Culture rewarded By Grandmama as the best product from Ratchaburi province in 2019.

Year in review: The biggest K-pop news of the year

To say the least, the year 2019 was a tumultuous one. Ups and downs, tears of joy and sorrow dominated the headlines.

Here are some of the major stories that dominated K-pop news.

1. Plight of YG Entertainment

At the beginning of the year, it seemed like K-pop powerhouse YG Entertainment would have a solid 2019. YG’s girl group Blackpink was enjoying growing popularity around the world, while the label’s crown jewel Big Bang was gearing up for a possible comeback when all the members were discharged from the military.

But that all changed when the label became mired in an industry-wide scandal that started at the Burning Sun Nightclub, owned by Big Bang’s ex-member Seungri. The Burning Sun scandal then snowballed to allegations ranging from prostitution, sexual assault, police corruption, spycam, and drug, among others, involving multiple K-pop artists. The scandal forced Seungri to quit the entertainment industry, while YG’s head and founder Yang Hyun-suk also stepped down for his involvement, including allegedly colluding with police to cover up past drug incidents involving one of his artists, iKON’s B.I. His brother Yang Min-suk, who served as agency’s CEO, also stepped down in June.

YG is now led by new appointed CEO Hwang Bo-kyung, but industry watchers speculate it will take a while for one of the once powerful K-pop agencies to regain its foothold. The scandal has halved YG’s stock price from earlier this year, and the future looks bleak at the moment. But there is some hope. Blackpink is slated to return with new music early next year, while Big Bang could possibly still make comeback.

2. BTS global domination

As the year kicked off, BTS continued its global domination, reaching places that no other K-pop group has. In February, the seven members, dressed in sleek black tuxedos, walked the red carpet of the 61st Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. At music’s big night, BTS graced the stage to present the best R&B album of the year to H.E.R. While BTS did not take home any trophies — after being nominated for best album package — it made history as the first-ever Korean act to appear at the Grammys.

In April, BTS made its much-awaited return to music with “Map of the Soul: Persona,” slashing global charts and its own records. The seven-track EP debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the first group since the Beatles to earn three top spots in less than a year. The album also ranked No. 1 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart, becoming the first Korean act to do so. The title track “Boy With Luv,” featuring Halsey, debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band’s highest-charting song, as well the best score by a K-pop group.Meanwhile, the band traveled all around the world, hitting major stadiums in its world tour “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself.” The UK’s Wembley Stadium, California’s Rose Bowl Stadium are among the stops that BTS turned the colossal stadium into purple. With its stop at the King Fahd International Stadium, BTS also became the first-ever foreign act to perform at a stadium in Saudi Arabia.

On the awards front, BTS won two prizes at the Billboard Music Awards and three at the American Music Awards. It’s not over yet. With the year-end music awards, BTS has been sweeping the scene, taking home multiple top prizes at the latest MMA and MAMA shows.

3. K-pop romances

K-pop stars sing about love, but romance is not so easy in the industry where singers are closely watched and bound by strict rules — where some agencies even put no dating clause in the contract.

Nevertheless, new lovers are born, as well as some heartbreaks in this cutthroat K-pop industry. Some manage to stay strong and steady.

To kick of the New Year, K-pop fans woke up to a news that K-pop darlings EXO’s Kai and Blackpink’s Jennie were dating, which was later confirmed by the agency. The news met with feverish media attention as well as mixed responses from fans.

The fire, however, was short-lived. Less than a month after their relationship was exposed, EXO’s SM Entertainment said the two had split ways, without giving a reason.

A new idol couple emerged when Kang Daniel, former Wanna One member, and Twice’s Jihyo were confirmed to be dating in August. The news shocked their fans with some expressing disappointment, but support as well. The two reportedly were introduced through an unnamed K-pop idol. Despite some breakup rumors, they still seem to be going steady.

Then there is K-pop power couple HyunA and Dawn, who have been going strong for four years. Earlier this year, both singers signed with Psy’s new agency P Nation, after being kicked out from Cube Entertainment for dating last year. Their relationship carried through to their work, as the two made the rare decision to release albums on the same day. In November, HyunA dropped “Flower Shower,” while Dawn released “Money” at a joint showcase, openly expressing gratitude and affection toward each other.

4. Deaths of Sulli, Goo Hara

It was a heartbreaking year, having to bid farewell to two K-pop sweethearts. In October, Sulli, formerly of f(x), was found dead at her home. While the exact cause of death has not been revealed, the 25-year-old starlet, whose real name is Choi Jin-ri, had been suffering from depression, according to the police. Sulli had been target of severe public criticism for her outspoken positions on feminism, mental health and body image, which remain sensitive issues in the K-pop industry. Six weeks later, Goo Hara, an actor and singer who was part of Kara also died. The death of Goo, who was a close friend of Sulli, prompted another wave of grief and shock. Goo had been also suffering from online abuse and intense media attention, especially after her involvement in the court battle with her ex-boyfriend, accusing him of threatening her with a sex video filmed without her consent.

The tragic deaths of the two stars drew attention to wide-ranging issues, including mental health, the intense pressures K-pop stars face, and cyberbullying.

5. SuperM and EXO comebacks

In October, the latest supergroup was born from K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment, partnering with Capitol Music Group for distribution. Dubbed the “Avengers of K-pop,” SuperM consists of the top talents from the agency’s major groups, including SHINee’s Taemin, EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai, NCT 127’s Taeyong and Mark and WayV’s Ten and Lucas.

SuperM (SM Entertainment)

The mega project debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart with its self-titled EP “SuperM,” led by title track “Jopping.” With the album launch, the group, on the back of strong fans, is eying to break into the US market, with its English songs and North America tour through February.

With no time to rest, EXO made a much-awaited return with its sixth full-length album “Obsession,” in November. The album bring six of the nine members, Kai, Chanyeol, Sehun, Baekhyun, Suho and Chen. D.O. and Xiumin are absent due to mandatory military service, while Lay is busy with solo activities in China.

Despite the absence, EXO put on electrifying performances for the album’s title track, introducing a new concept called X-EXO — the band’s evil clone. EXO has been releasing songs with two contradicting concepts, under the storyline of EXO members fighting against their darker, evil doppelgangers X-EXO.

6. Military service

Mandatory military service in Korea has always been a hotly debated issue. Especially for male K-pop stars, because enlistments mean about two years away from the entertainment industry.

Big Bang’s leader G-Dragon was discharged from military in October. (Yonhap)

While fans were hoping popular K-pop stars could possibly be exempt from service — as some top artists and sportsmen are — the government clarified in November that the exemption will not be granted, citing a shortage of conscripts every year.

This year, we saw EXO’s Xiumin and D.O taking leave for military service in May and July, respectively. In April, SHINee members Key and Minho were enlisted in March and April, following Onew last December. Following Yoon Doo-joon’s enlistment last August, all other Highlight members joined the service this year. 2PM’s Junho and Chansung also were enlisted in May and June, respectively.

After a long-wait, all Big Bang members were discharged from the military, starting with T.O.P in July, G-Dragon in October and Daesung and Taeyang in November. With all members discharged fans are anticipating a big comeback from the band, but nothing has been decided yet.

Thai hotshot Jazz Janewattananond completed his domination of the 2019 Asian Tour in style, winning the season-ending Thailand Masters with a convincing five-shot victory at the Phoenix Golf Gold and Country Club in Chonburi province on Sunday.

Despite two bogeys — on the sixth and 13th holes — the 23-year-old carded an impressive final round 65 and a total 23-under-par 261 for back-to-back wins on the continental tour following his triumph at the Indonesian Masters last Sunday.

“It’s such a huge honour to win on home soil, in a tournament hosted by Thai legend Thongchai Jaidee. I’m very proud of myself,” said Jazz, after winning his fourth title of the season on the Asian Tour and his sixth overall. The win makes him US$90,000 richer and he will break into the world top 40 for the first time, the third Thai to achieve this after Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

“Last week I was surprised to win as I was sick coming from Japan where it was very cold. I had to struggle in the first couple of rounds last week. Same thing this week. Maybe I just tried to survive and didn’t think about the score,” added Jazz, the first player to win back-to-back on the Asian Tour after Lee Westwood in 2011.

With Sunday’s win, Jazz also became the second player with the most wins in a single season after Thaworn Wiratchant who too had four titles in 2005.

His six titles include the Phoenix Gold twice and the Queen’s Cup in July last year.

Suradit Yongcharoenchai

“Three years ago, I struggled a lot. For some reason, that has changed for me and I learned to enjoy playing here. We Thais have a lot of home advantages, eating good food and having a lot of support,” added the Thai.

Three players settled for joint second, each with a 266. Second-round leader Phachara Kongwatmai continues his wait for his first Tour crown, signing off with a 67 and a total 18-under.

Phachara Kongwatmai

“I didn’t putt well at the start. I started making my putts in only the last four holes. It was too late for me but I’m happy with the way I played all week,” said the 20-year-old Phachara.

Suradit Yongcharoenchai, with a low round of 62, also finished runner-up along with Belgian heart-throb Thomas Detry who carded a 69.

MQDC to build world’s first town purposefully designed for healthier, happier living at The Forestia

Dec 23. 2019

• Increases investment, expands project size to Bht 125,000 million

• Becomes Thailand’s largest ever private sector property development project

• First project in world to put a forest inside a development project

‘An Enchanted Community District in the Forest’

Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (MQDC), one of Thailand’s leading property developers, recently, announced that it is boosting investment in its 300-rai The Forestias development on Banga-Trad Road km 7 in the Eastern Economic Corridor, and expanding the project size from Bht 90,000 million to Bht 125,000 million to make it a new, global prototype for a town development.  The increased investment makes The Forestias the largest property development project in Thailand.

The project land size is also increased by 98-rai to be 398-rai.

Mrs. Thippaporn Ahriyavraromp, Chairperson of MQDC, said, “We are building the world’s first town that is purposefully designed for healthier living.”

“It is being designed and built by some of the world’s most respected experts as well as leading global institutions to ensure that every aspect promotes a better quality of life.  The design has been commended by Professors at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health as a visionary initiative,” she said.

She said that MQDC increased its investment in The Forestias “after receiving very good feedback from global partners, which has encouraged us further along the road of creating a new type of development that is completely focused on the well-being of residents, the surrounding community, and to sustainability.”

Among the most extraordinary features of The Forestias is a massive, seedling- and sapling-planted 30-rai forest area at its centre, anchoring a diverse and rich ecological system that will develop and evolve naturally in the years ahead.

Mrs. Ahriyavraromp said, “It is also the first time, anywhere in the world, that a forest of this size is being integrated into a city development to bring nature back into an urban setting, and which is one of the reasons why we call the development an enchanted community district in the forest.”

The Forestias includes multiple residential components with villas and condominiums aimed at a diverse range of lifestyles and family sizes, as well as commercial space for offices, a sports complex, lifestyle activities, retail and food & beverage outlets, as well as family edutainment facilities in a Family Life Center.

There is a town centre for community activities and cultural pursuits, a theatre, an event hall, markets, and also a 1.6 kilometre elevated walkway that links many of the development’s components and provides a ‘nature-walk’ that weaves above the forest at the centre of the development.

Other pioneering components that are being integrated into the town for the first time in Thailand is a residential area that is specifically designed to make life safer and more convenient for the elderly, including specialised facilities for daily activities, a clubhouse, and trained care-givers.

There is also a 5-star hotel and a large medical centre with state-of-the art facilities and some of Thailand’s most eminent medical specialists.

Mr. Kittiphun Ouiyamaphun, Project Director-The Forestias, MQDC, said, “Everything at The Forestias is designed with a common purpose to promote the good health and happiness of residents to a level never before undertaken, including the layout of the public spaces, home layouts, choices of materials used inside and outside homes, the integration of 21st century life technologies, the management of natural light, noise, heat, airflows, as well as air quality and water quality.”

He said, “Research clearly shows that one of the most essential components promoting a healthier, happier life is the proximity of people to members of their family and loved ones.

“Among the most important innovations at The Forestias is the way we bring families closer together across multiple generations through carefully planned residential components located around The Forestias.  They are designed specifically for the needs of particular age groups, whether they are first jobbers, newlyweds, young families, or older parents, and allow them to live close to their children and grandchildren, or their parents, while still allowing each to maintain their independence and privacy.

“We also aim to help people get closer to the diverse wonders of nature as one of the most important sources of comfort and relaxation,” Mr. Ouiyamaphun added.

He said, “The unprecedented cultivation of an immense forest at a cost of more than a billion baht is the centre-piece of our development.  It is comprised of an area that is a genuine ‘deep forest’, as well as forest areas that are more easily accessed through walkways and with more open, green areas to allow people to immerse themselves in the enchantment of nature.”

He said that there is a strong focus on walkability in The Forestias, for both convenience and the pleasure of being close to nature, as well as for reasons of good health from regular exercise.  Footpaths and roadways are carefully planned, routed and protected with natural plant barriers and canopies.

The Forestias has specially built flood protection that includes very large drainage reservoirs which can contain more than ten million litres of water and are able to protect the development from even the heaviest downpours.

“We invested heavily in these reservoirs rather than just let rainwater run off our development and drain out elsewhere.  It exemplifies our approach of doing the best for The Forestias and, in parallel, also helping our neighbours in the community,”   Mr. Ouiyamaphun said.

Similarly, the forest is expected to act as a ‘green lung’, both, for The Forestias as well as for nearby communities, and also produce a general cooling effect on the entire area, in addition to helping restore nature for the benefit of all.

“While being kinder to our planet ourselves, we also help our residents contribute to sustainability.  For example, our state-of-the-art energy systems will help residents and visitors across the entire project reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by a staggering amount which is almost equivalent to what a 30,000-rai forest would absorb,” he said.

Mr. Visit Malaisirirat, Chief Executive Officer, MQDC, said, “This is very much in keeping with MQDC philosophy to be an organisation that not only creates great developments, but also to be one that encourages, through example, social responsibility and a concern for the wellbeing of all.”

According to Mr. Malaisirirat, MQDC aims to be “a model developer supporting our nation to build orderly, active, happier and healthier communities.”

“Thailand has the potential to be a global leader with innovative concepts in property development that enhance the quality of life of residents as well as of those in surrounding communities, while also promoting sustainovation.  The Forestias is a truly world-class development pioneering new concepts, and it is already bringing honour to our country on the global stage,” he said.

The Forestias is strategically located on the Eastern Economic Corridor which is predicted to be the fastest growing development corridor in Thailand, and has easy access to major highways and mass transportation systems.

The construction of road systems and the pilings for infrastructure at the project are already 90 percent completed.

Among some of the branded components of The Forestias are ‘Whizdom’ condominiums, ‘Mulberry Grove’ condominiums, ‘Mulberry Grove Villas’, ‘The Aspen Tree’ residences, ‘Six Senses Residences’, and a ‘Six Senses’ hotel.

China decided to adjust tariffs on some imported goods from Jan 1, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council announced on Monday (December 23).

Temporary tariff rates may apply to more than 850 items of imported goods, which will be lower than the most-favored-nation tax rates, to increase imports and optimize the import structure, the commission said in a statement on the website.

From July 1, 2020, China will cut the most-favored-nation tax rates for 176 items of information technology products, and adjust some products’ temporary tariff rates accordingly, it said.

For frozen pork, the tariff rate will be temporarily reduced from 12 percent to 8 percent, a measure to increase the pork supply and tame pork prices in the domestic market. The rate for some raw materials of medicines for asthma and diabetes will be lowered to zero. Some equipment and parts for making semiconductor products will also be added to the temporary tariff rate list, according to the statement.

These tariff adjustments are conducive to reducing import costs as well as promoting orderly and free flows of international and domestic production factors. The move will also facilitate high-quality opening-up and accelerate the construction of free trade zones, to improve the global trade environment, the commission said.
