Uno Mas, the upmarket Spanish restaurant at Centara Grand at CentralWorld, goes wild for the authentic, feel-good Spanish dish – paella. Originating from Valencia, Spain’s national dish is now enjoyed all over the world, The difference between good and great paella is not only down to the skill of the chef, but also the quality of the ingredients used, which can range from common seafood to pork, chicken and vegetables.

Uno Mas, however, serves it in a different way, in a split “half & half” bowl that features some of the finest imported products from the Mediterranean.

On one side is Dels Pirineus which has the richness of Iberico pork, Botifarra sausages, wild mushrooms and black truffles. On the other side, it’s Lobster Socarrant, which has succulent carabineros shrimp and delicate lobster – making this one paella dish like no other in Bangkok.

Diners can enjoy this very special take on paella for Bt1,650-plus. Book a table at (02) 100 6255.

Xilingol League shows its true colours

Xilingol League in Northern China is home to the rich Inner Mongolian grasslands of Hebei, a pure land with Mongolian regional characteristics and culture. Its name is made up of two terms meaning mountain and river respectively in the local dialect and the mingling between mountain and river conjures up the most beautiful vast Xilingol grassland.

Spring in Xilingol is a season when everything grows. Although the grassland still has some unmelted snow, the tender vegetation buds breaking through the snow offer a with dreamy aesthetics. When the mountain flowers bloom, the season is quiet and clear.

Summer in Xilingol is a season of green fields and cool breeze. The vast grassland is infinitely green and in contrast to the blue waters of the fast-flowing river. With the blue sky covered with soft white clouds, flocks of cattle and sheep can be seen leisurely foraging and running.

Autumn in Xilingol is a season much sought after by shutterbugs. The prairie in autumn has no brilliant wild flowers, but withered and yellow grass. It looks like a large carpet, offering a steady and thick feeling when walking on it, while winter brings the grand gathering known as Nadam Fair to the frozen grassland. It’s a great time to visit and admire the colourful ethnic costumes of the riders as their horses gallop across the snowy plains.

Saraburi is the latest destination to be added to Airbnb’s “Beyond Big Cities” global campaign that encourages visitors to travel beyond beyond major tourist centres and have a positive economic impact on the local communities they stay in.

The move enjoys the support of the Ministry of Interior’s Department of Local Administration (DLA) and Community Development Department (CDD).

Airbnb had added Buriram as the first Thai destination to its campaign earlier this year.

Airbnb will showcase the beauty of Saraburi with the launch of a community-led destination marketing video that highlights its rural beauty, local culture and diverse neighbourhoods, along with the warmth with which Saraburi hosts are welcoming domestic and international travellers into their homes and communities.

In addition to the video, which can be viewed by Airbnb travellers globally, Airbnb has also launched a dedicated Saraburi page at http://www.airbnb.com/saraburi.

The page, which features hyper-local information for travellers in Thai and English, includes local insights as well as links to Airbnb Stays and Experiences in Saraburi and surrounding areas.

In 2018, more than 1.9 million guests stayed in an Airbnb in Thailand, with inbound guest arrivals to Saraburi growing at an estimated 115 per cent year on year from 2018, based on Airbnb internal data from January and July 2019.

Due to its close proximity to Bangkok, as it can be reached within less than two hours with easy road and rail access, Thailand’s capital city is a key feeder market for Saraburi.

Meanwhile, the top six countries where inbound travellers to Saraburi come from are: 1 Thailand, 2 US, 3 Malaysia, 4 Japan, 5 Singapore, 6 Great Britain.

Based on internal Airbnb data, an estimated 70 per cent of all hosts in Saraburi received Airbnb’s maximum 5-star review rating, and local hosts rated their guests an average guest rating of 5 out of 5.

“Airbnb remains committed to investing in efforts to spread the benefits of tourism beyond big cities, in line with the Royal Thai Government’s policies. We are thrilled to unveil Saraburi as an emerging destination for Airbnb travellers, as it is easily accessible from Bangkok and offers a wealth of local culture and hosts who are passionate to share their homes and way of life,” Mich Goh, head of public policy for Southeast Asia, Airbnb, said.

“We are looking forward to continuing our collaboration with government and industry stakeholders across Thailand in promoting the country’s emerging destinations.”

Samniang Simmawan, director of the Social, Economic and Quality of Life Development Subdivision of the Ministry of Interior’s Department of Local Administration, added, “Through this collaboration with Airbnb, we are helping Thai homestays – homes that have a maximum of four rooms or can welcome visitors not exceeding 20 – better understand the need of international travellers, as we encourage them to provide travellers with a truly authentic Thai experience. We want to see more Thais start their own homestay businesses and benefit from tourism, and with the support of Airbnb these Thai homestays can now reach millions globally.”

Saraburi and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of interesting options. Some of these include: Baan Baan homestay, Baan Klang Suan Clean Farm, Ban Thida Ruan Thai Rim Nam, Ban Suan Bua Yoo Pranom Chai, Duang Yee Whaa homestay.

Like elsewhere in the world, Thai shoppers are moving to shopping online, taking advantage of the improved services, a broader variety of payment options including credit card, e-wallet and cash on delivery, fast shipping and the emergence of new online retailers.

Better value is also an important factor and a survey by Priceza.com conducted between January and November revealed the top five products that are cheaper in online shops than in traditional retailers.

1. Smart phones

Smart phones sold via online shops can be up to 20-per-cent cheaper than in traditional shops, and prices of older models will come down faster when new ones hit the market. Statistics show that with the exception of the iPhone, all brands of smart phones sold through online shops drop their prices within 2-3 months after new models are announced.

2. IT gadgets

These products include smart watches, headphones, speakers, IoT and smart devices. Online shops often provide discount codes for these products to boost sales during festivals as they are among top choices for gifts.

3. Baby products

These products include diapers, formula, milk bottles, breast pumps and baby clothes. Some brands even have their own online shops to distribute products to consumers without the middleman.

4. Gift vouchers and cash cards

These are also among the top choices for gifts and rewards in special activities such as office games and parties. Many establishments including Central Department Store and Starbucks sell their gift vouchers for cheap online to attract customers to spend at their store.

5. Cosmetics and skincare products

Branded cosmetics sold online often carry 30- to 40-per-cent discounts on the label price while those sold over the counter see only 10-15-per cent discounts. These products also include sunscreen and perfumes.

Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond paid tributes to the Kingdom’s golfing legend Thongchai Jaidee for playing an instrumental role in his success as he prepares to tee off in his last event of 2019 at the Thailand Masters which starts on Thursday (December 19).

Jazz has enjoyed a sensational season, kicking off the year with a win in Singapore followed by two more significant victories in South Korea and Indonesia last week.

The 24-year-old deservedly sealed the Order of Merit crown, as no one can catch up with him on the money list even with three events left to play at the start of this month.

“It’s an honour to hear such compliments from Thongchai. He has helped many Thai golfers to get to where they are now. He has single-handedly placed Thailand on the world golf map and that has been a great inspiration not only for me but for other Thai golfers, too. It’s reassuring for us as whenever we go out there to compete, because we know that someone like Thongchai has already done that and we can also do it,” said Jazz, who had triumphed on this course last year.

“It was an honour to win the flagship event on the Asian Tour [last week in Indonesia]. It has been a very good year and this will be my last event for 2019. Now that I’ve broken into the top-50 in the world, I want to break into the top-40. It’s going to get harder but I just want to set realistic goals for myself,” added the country’s No 1 player.

Just like how he started the year, the Thai is looking for one last hurrah at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club before he takes a well-deserved break.

Compatriot Gunn Charoenkul, who watched in awe as Jazz outclassed him in Jakarta last week, believes a switch in his outlook towards his game and life has led to a very consistent year for him in 2019 as he looks towards closing his season on a high note.

“I did not expect to have such a consistent season at the start of the year. Surprisingly, I played really well and just rode on the good form and consistencies. Playing against Jazz last week in Indonesia, I now know where I need to improve on and get to the same level as he is right now,” added Gunn, who finished second behind Jazz in the Indonesian Masters on Sunday.

Belgium’s Thomas Detry, who is one of the invited star players for this week, is also seeking a grandstand finish after missing out on his chance to win in two of his last three events.

Apple, Google, Amazon want one language for smart home devices

Apple, Google, Amazon want one language for smart home devices

Apple, Alphabet’s Google and Amazon.com — three of the biggest smart-home and voice-assistant providers — are joining forces to make internet-connected homes easier to set up and safer to use.

The rivals announced Wednesday that they’re working with the Zigbee Alliance, a foundation that promotes standards for the Internet of Things, and its members including Samsung Electronics Co., Somfy SA, and IKEA, on a new standard that will ensure their products work with each other.

While an increasing portion of the home can now be controlled by a voice-activated speaker or remote app, from thermostats to lights and even refrigerators, “the lack of an industry-wide connectivity standard leaves people confused and frustrated when trying to understand what devices work with each smart home ecosystem,” Nik Sathe and Grant Erickson, engineers at Google’s Nest unit, wrote in a statement. “It also places a heavy burden on manufacturers to make sure all devices are compatible with each other.”

Amazon and Google have relatively open systems already, which have allowed tens of thousands of third-party devices to link up with their smart speakers. Apple only supports a few hundred via its HomeKit standard. The global smart home market is projected to grow to $174.2 billion by 2025, according to MarketWatch, up from $55.7 billion in 2016.

Apple said the project is built around “a shared belief that smart home devices should be secure, reliable, and seamless to use.”

But the move could also raise privacy and security questions. For years, Amazon and Google collected data every time someone used a smart speaker to turn on a light or lock a door and asked gadget makers like Logitech Co. to send a stream of information whenever someone turned on a light or locked a door. Bringing more devices together in a home raises the prospect of personal data being shared with a higher number of companies, some of which may have more lax security or privacy standards. Google pared back the number of companies its Nest devices connect to earlier this year due to privacy concerns.

After lagging behind Amazon and Google, Apple is rebooting its smart home efforts, developing new software and devices from a new team, Bloomberg reported earlier this year.

The alliance is aiming to have its new joint protocol ready by the end of 2020.

Journalist wins damages in rape case

Dec 18. 2019
By The Japan News/ANN446 Viewed

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The Tokyo District Court ordered Wednesday former television reporter Noriyuki Yamaguchi to pay ¥3.3 million in compensation to journalist Shiori Ito in a high-profile rape case.

In her lawsuit, Ito, 30, demanded ¥11 million in damages from the former TBS reporter, 53, claiming that she was raped by him in 2015.

Presiding Judge Akihiro Suzuki said Yamaguchi “had intercourse with the unconscious plaintiff without her consent and then tried to continue the act after she regained consciousness and refused.”

According to her petition, Ito lost consciousness while dining and drinking with Yamaguchi to discuss her job in April 2015. She claimed that she was raped at a hotel in Tokyo.

The judge acknowledged that Ito had consumed a large amount of alcohol and was in a state of inebriation when she entered the hotel.

Given that Ito had consulted her case immediately after the incident, Suzuki said that the sex was without consent and that she had no reason to make false claims.

Suzuki refuted Yamaguchi’s insistence that the sex was consensual, saying his statements “changed unreasonably and were not reliable.”

The court rejected a lawsuit from Yamaguchi demanding that Ito pay compensation, claiming that her statements during a press conference undermined his confidence in society.

The judge ruled that the press conference did not amount to defamation, saying that it was held “to improve the environment surrounding sex crime victims.”

In July 2016, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office did not indict Yamaguchi after he was accused by police of raping an intoxicated person.

Although Ito filed a complaint against the prosecutors’ decision, a prosecution inquest committee ruled that the decision was fair, saying that there was no reason to reverse it. After the court handed down the latest ruling, Ito said that she was pleased that all the evidence and testimonies were made public thanks to the hearing.Speech
