Hong Kong studio unveils message on global air quality at Wonderfruit Festival

Ceekayello, the first Hong Kong art-design studio officially awarded by Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand this year, is launching Haiijaii, a bamboo neon-light art installation about global air quality Haiijaii (meaning “breathe” in Thai) is a light installation fuelled by data of air quality index collected from various locations around the world.

The lights “breathe” according to the pureness of the air. Some will flicker, emulating people choking from pollution and some will pulse slowly, like steady inhalation and exhalation from a healthy atmosphere. The art installation is made out of recycled used and unwanted materials. Haiijaii aims to give a second life to the materials they use.

“In this modern single-usage era, we would like to restart the practice of giving a ‘second life’ to our once-loved items like bamboo woods, commercial neon signs and beach mats. These materials serve as visual stimulation for inspiring cohabitation in the world; the city, the forest and the beach, nourishing them, nourishing us,” Ceekayello said.

Traditional commercial use of neon light peaked in the 1950s, where it became the inspiration for a lot of futuristic sci-fi movies. With its downturn due to the rise of commercial LED neons and lightboxes as well as government regulations, neon became a declining and shrinking scene globally. However, in recent years, there has been an artistic revival to bring back the neon, as seen around the world in artworks, commercial spaces and signage. “We are reconstructing used and unwanted commercial neons, and giving them a new life in terms of visual shape and purpose. In Haiijaii, our art installation, each set with a neon piece would represent a country or region,” Ceekayello said.

The Wonderfruit Festival has become one of Asia’s biggest events. Known as the Asian “Burning Man”, it aims to be a celebration of art, music, food and ideas to catalyse positive impact on sustainability and lifestyle. In its sixth edition, Wonderfruit is being held from December 12 to 16 in Pattaya.

E-cigarettes have been blamed for breathing problems in a 48-year-old male patient admitted to a private hospital, Dr Asadang Ruaycharin, deputy director-general and a spokesman for the Department of Disease Control, said yesterday (December 7).

The man told doctors he had started to smoke e-cigarettes containing marijuana on November 3 and soon developed shortness of breath, fatigue, fever and chest pain. On November 15, he was admitted to a private hospital then transferred to another private hospital on November 18 after lab tests revealed no lung infection but symptoms consistent with pneumonia from electric cigarette use, according to the criteria set by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. He was treated with intravenous steroid therapy and has now been sent home.

After a slow and quiet week, Thailand finally lived up to the expectations of sports fans by sweeping 18 gold medals for a total of 41 golds in the SEA Games on Saturday in the Philippines.

It was an impressive rebound for the 13-time champions, who proceeded through the opening week with a mere 18 gold medals, nowhere the target of 120 golds.

But the tide did eventually turn as the Kingdom moved past Malaysia and Singapore in the medal tally with a haul of 41 golds to land in fourth place. With three more days to go, host the Philippines, who have won 89 golds overall, remain in the lead and are the heavy favourites to win the 30th edition while Indonesia, with 50 golds, and Vietnam with 46, come in second and third.

The sailing team proved the most productive on Saturday, earning five medals from men’s and women’s optimist, men’s and women’s international and laser radial.

Four golds were captured in athletics: women’s triple jump, men’s hammer throw, men’s 1,000m and men’s 200m.

Thai breaststroke king Nuttapong Ketin won his fifth Games gold medal after touching the pool first in the men’s 200m category. He also won this event in 2009, 2001, 2013 and 2017.

Thai women’s table tennis medallists.

In table tennis, Suthasini Sawettabut and Orawan Paranang won the first women’s doubles gold medal for Thailand in 34 years in an all-Thai affair opposite Nanthana Kamwong and Jinnipa Sawettabut.

In rhythmic gymnastics, Benjaporn Limpanich put an end to the long eight-year drought of gold medals for Thailand after reigning supreme in the clubs competition.

The other six gold medals came from traditional boat race – 22-seaters 200m, men’s judo team, women’s taekwondo poomsae team, men’s cycling time trial team, men’s shooting air pistol and men’s Asean chess.

Arizona – Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee shot a brilliant final round 9-under 62 to earn full exempt status for the 2020 PGA TOUR Champions after he finished second in the Qualifying Tournament Final Stage on Friday.

The three-time Asian Tour No. 1 and eight-time European Tour winner entered the last day outside the top-five which rewards players with full playing rights on the Champions and Thongchai, the first Thai player to play in the Presidents Cup in 2015,  made the biggest final-round jump as he improved from T11 overnight to second with a 16-under total. He carded five birdies and two eagles on the ninth and 17th holes in his final 18 holes. He had carded earlier scores of 67, 71 and 68.

“Very excited. I worked well with my coach and caddie this week. The course is in great shape. When you have a good tee shot, you have a chance. Very proud with this 62 and I played well. Putted a lot better today. I attacked and targeted five or six under today as I was outside the top-five and managed to attack the par fives. Turned 50 this year and I’ll try to enjoy it although I’ll have to do things differently now. Finally I’ve got in and hopefully I’ll enjoy next year,” said Thongchai.

Shane Bertsch made a six-foot par putt on the 18th hole to complete a final-round 65 and pip Thongchai by one stroke with a 17-under total. Apart from Bertsch and Thongchai, the next three players on the leaderboard are Sweden’s Robert Karlsson, Robin Byrd and Australia’s Stephen Leaney.

Karlsson was the 54-hole leader and earned one of the five cards after a final-round 69 gave him a third-place finish at 14-under. An 11-time winner on the European Tour, Karlsson was selected by Padraig Harrington to be a vice captain at the 2020 Ryder Cup.

Thongchai, the leading career money earner on the Asian Tour, won First Stage in California by three shots with a four-day score of 13-under. He turned in rounds of 61-73-71-66, making eight birdies and an eagle to turn in the opening round 61. He has been a staple on the Asian Tour for a long time, collecting 13 wins, second most all-time behind countryman Thaworn Wiratchant. He also has eight career wins on the European Tour. The Thai legend turned 50 in November.

Defending champion and veteran Australian sailor Ray Roberts clocked up five wins from eight races on his boat Team Hollywood to win the top flight IRC Zero class at the 33rd Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, which finished on Saturday.

Despite some serious competition from Thailand’s former world Optimist champion and two-time Asian Games gold medalist Noppakao Poonpat, who was at the helm of the Thai-registered boat THA 72, Roberts and his crew finished the regatta in overall first place. THA 72 finished a close second with six second-place finishes from the eight races contested.

The Hong Kong-registered boat WindSikher of Sarab Singh and Nick Burns finished third overall, despite not starting in the final race, which was held in strong winds.

“Before the start of racing today the wind was at 24 knots and gusting up to 30 knots,” said race officer Simon James. “At the start of racing the wind was averaging 17 knots, then it went up to 22. The wind was all over the place. Safety is the most important thing and on Friday we cancelled some racing. But today the conditions were better and we were able to hold the races.”

Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk, a personal representative of His Majesty the King, presided over the Royal Awards Ceremony and presented the trophies to the winners on Saturday afternoon.

Russia’s Alexey Mashkin steered MegaZip to first place overall in the IRC 1 class after three wins from eight races. Hot on his heels were two Japanese skippers, with Kazuki Kihara on Char Chan in second place and Nanamori Yasuo on Emagine in third.

Proving that size doesn’t matter was Danish sailor Morten Jakobsen, who steered his small boat Over Here to victory in the IRC 2 class. Jakobsen was at the helm of the smallest boat in the class and won four of the eight races contested, just managing to get the better of two Chinese skippers.

Finishing second overall in the IRC 2 class was Shen Sheng on Bigboys Sailing Team, followed by Minzhi Feng on Highlead Encoragers.

Overall honours in the Premier class went to Hong Kong’s Geoff Hill on Antipodes, who won two of the seven races contested. Australian Peter Cremers finished a narrow second overall on Shahtoosh, just pipping Thailand’s Inthinai Yingsiri, who had to settle for third.

Australian Dan Fidock won six of the seven races to finish on top in the Multihull Racing class, with Dan Moore and Nigel Cross on Frankenstein in second place and Hong Kong’s Gaeten Verhegge skippering Team Red Blood into third.

The Firefly 850 Sports class, for mostly locally-built racing catamarans, saw Phuket-based sailor Hans Rahmann score four wins from eight races for a narrow overall victory on Voodoo, with Great Britain’s John Newnham a close second on Twin Sharks and fellow Brit Neil Ayre third on Mamba.

The International Dinghy Fleet races were held close to Kata Beach on Saturday in a bid to avoid the stronger winds further out to sea. The strong winds on Friday had caused some problems for the mostly young dinghy sailors, with the Royal Thai Navy’s inflatable boats as well as some of the boats from the main fleet coming to lend a hand and towing some dinghies to shore.

A total of 120 sailors contested six classes of dinghies during the regatta, encouraged by the organisers who are keen to promote the sport among the young generation.

“For 2019 and in past years, we have had a special focus on growing the dinghy components of our overall regatta, as we in the sailing community in Thailand can feel the positive effect this is having over the years as the sport of sailing continues to grow in popularity here,” said Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Organising Committee. “The International Dinghy fleet is a fast-growing racing programme designed to promote and encourage youth sailing in Thailand.”

In Saturday’s blustery conditions, experienced Thai sailor ML Weka Bhanubandh took the honours in the Optimist boys’ class after a near flawless series of races. Thorfun Boonak, another rising Thai star, won the Optimist girls’ class.

The Laser 4.7 class went to Paliga Poonpat, while the Laser Radial honors were taken by Suchakree Detthotsapol. Jarupong Meeusamsen won the Laser Standard class, while the 420 class was won by Thanawan Aiam-mi and Nattapon Yuang-ngam.

There has also been an ongoing Phuket Dinghy Series, which concluded on Saturday and that was won by Nammapat Pooltong.

The IOM class for one-metre radio-controlled boats, which made their debut at this year’s Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, was won by China’s Gong Qunxing.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the RTN 3 and Phuket province.

There were five days of racing for the keelboats and multihulls. For the International Dinghy Classes and IOMC, four consecutive days of racing were scheduled from Wednesday.

Defender Theerathon Bunmathan enjoyed a heyday in his career after becoming the first Thai ever to win a J-League title following the 3-0 win of his side Yokohama F Marinos over Tokyo FC this week.

The 29-year-old from Nonthaburi, on loan from Muangthong United, scored the first goal for Yokohama before the home team accomplished their J-League trophy status with a 3-0 win. With 70 points, six ahead of second-placed Tokyo, Yokohama won the 2019 League title, their fourth time after 1995, 2003 and 2004.

The former Thailand’s skipper registered himself as the first Thai international to win a J-League, one of leading top flights in Asia. He has produced three goals for Marinos in the entire season.

“This success did not come easily,” said Theerathon. “It’s a team effort. So, I have to give credits to all team members,” added the first Asean player to win the league.

“I’m really honoured to achieve this. Thank you all my fans for support,” he said.

However, he is the second Thai to win a major league in Asia after Piyapong Pue-on, then representing Lucky-Goldstar, won K League (South Korea) in 1985.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has instructed the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to check on the financial status of all airlines operating in Thailand to see if they are in financial trouble.

He added that the CAAT should conduct the inspection immediately. If it finds any airlines financially unhealthy, it should increase its frequency of such inspections and order them to improve their financial status.

He said that the move is aimed at proactively preventing financial troubles from causing problems to passengers.

CAAT director general Chula Sukmanop said that it has found several carriers should be closely monitored in relation to their financial status.

If they fail to improve their situations in compliance with relevant rules, they risk having their licences revoked, he added.

PTT to hike LNG imports next year to meet needs of industrial sector

PTT Plc will import 5.2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) next year, up from 5 million tonnes this year, the company’s senior executive vice president of its Gas Business Unit, Wuttikorn Stithit, said.

This is in line with the long-term contracts PTT has signed with four suppliers.

The company estimated that the total demand of LNG next year would be almost the same level as this year or a little bit higher.

The LNG demand from power plants is expected to remain the same this year at 4,800-5,000 million cubic feet per day, accounting for 60 per cent of the country’s total demand.

The demand by the industrial sector, which accounts for 20 per cent of total demand, is expected to increase from this year.

He expected the demand for industrial use will expand as PTT’s gas business has continued to expand its gas distribution network to tap more number of industrial customers.

PTT has also increased the number of partners to distribute its LNG on a retail basis. Therefore, he expected growth in LNG demand for industrial use next year.

PTT is expected to begin trial of LNG-related services in the first quarter next year as part of the government’s policy of turning Thailand into the regional LNG trading hub.

The activities include LNG reloading and LNG bunkering services.

The withdrawal of India from the negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership free trade deal (RCEP), which has involved the participation of 16 countries, including Japan, China, South Korea and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is seemingly coming closer to reality.

Japan intends to continue efforts to persuade India to remain in the initial 16-country framework for the agreement of the regional trade talks. However, as there is still strong opposition to the RCEP within India, it remains to be seen whether the negotiations will go smoothly.

At a news conference after a Cabinet meeting on Friday, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama said that he would visit India from Tuesday to Wednesday.

In addition, he stated, “[Japan] will seriously discuss the matter together with India to aim for the signing [of the RCEP] within 2020,” indicating that he will aim to persuade India to take concerted action with other negotiating countries.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also plans to visit India from Dec. 15 to 17. Abe likely will urge India to return to the negotiating table.

India’s announcement of its exit from the RCEP took place at the leaders’ meeting for the deal in Bangkok on Nov. 4. Initially, there was a view among the other participating countries that the withdrawal announcement was a tactic to gain a negotiating advantage for India. But since then, the Indian government has been making comments to justify the country’s exit from the RCEP, strengthening its stance of not hesitating to actually withdraw.

A source close to the Thai government said, “We came to gradually feel how serious India is [about exiting the RCEP].”

In India, there is strong fear that if the RCEP is realized, a high volume of low-priced industrial and other products would flow into India from China, and India’s domestic industries could suffer.

At the leaders’ meeting, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was said to have stated that under the current circumstances, the RCEP could put Indian companies and consumers at a disadvantage, and that Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) would not have allowed India to join the RCEP.

Since the day following India’s withdrawal announcement, there have been a large number of voices from local newspapers and organizations in India applauding the announcement. They include one from English-language Indian paper The Economic Times, stating that the prime minister was protecting India. According to local newspapers and other sources, opposition to the RCEP still continues in India.

Japan sees the participation of India as indispensable for the RCEP because India is a huge market with a population of more than 1.3 billion people, and it is expected to see future economic growth. An increasingly urgent concern for Japan is that without India, China could enhance its relative influence.

Meanwhile, India is said to strongly seek the introduction of safeguards to prevent a sudden increase in the volume of imported products as a condition for the country to participate in the RCEP. It is said that India is taking such a step with China in mind, a stance that likely sets India apart from the other negotiating countries.

In addition, through the RCEP negotiations, India asks others to create an environment in which high-quality Indian human resources in the information technology sector will be able to succeed overseas. As the main workplaces for these Indian workers will be English-speaking countries, such as RCEP participants Australia and New Zealand, a Japanese government official said that Japan’s leverage is limited.

Under such circumstances, China and some ASEAN countries began to take a stance of accepting the RCEP coming into effect with just 15 participating countries, without India.

It is said that the negotiation schedule from now on has yet to be decided. The Japanese government is concerned about the future of the negotiations, as a government official said that if nothing is done, Japan could find itself as one of the minority countries that wish to stick to the 16-country framework.

As the government moves to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), garment and rice industry insiders expect the new trade corridor to diversify the Kingdom’s export market.

The Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday released a report on the results of its assessment of a potential FTA deal between Cambodia and the EAEU.

Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia secretary-general Ken Loo told The Post on Thursday that the Kingdom’s garment and footwear sectors would gain a new market if an FTA is signed.

“We will have duty-free access to exports, but we don’t know when we’ll reach the FTA. That is all I can say,” he said.

Cambodia Rice Federation vice-president Chan Sokheang said the agreement will boost the competitiveness of the Kingdom’s export-rice processing industry among its neighbours.

“Our export market will grow further and will not rely on just the European and Chinese markets. We have to open up more markets.

“Today, our premium varieties of rice are in very fierce competition with those of our neighbouring countries. The agreement will allow us to boost our competitiveness,” he said.

Speaking at the report launch ceremony, Minister of Commerce Pan Sorasak said the benefits of the FTA noted in the study include industrial diversification and expansion of financial services, transport, digital economy and agricultural services.

“An FTA will enable the two parties to increase economic cooperation, trade in goods, services and investment.

“We expect to increase trade and investment opportunities and mutual investment. Cambodia can increase its garments and textiles exports, agricultural products and other goods,” he said.

The EAEU is an economic bloc covering Eastern Europe and comprises five countries – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. The bloc has a combined population of 176 million and posted a gross domestic product of $2.5 trillion in 2016, Sorasak said.

Last month, Prime Minister Hun Sen discussed the agreement with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev during the 14th East Asia Summit in Thailand.

Speaking at the Asean Business and Investment Summit last month, Medvedev said as the EAEU had signed an FTA deal with Vietnam in 2015 and with Singapore on October 1, it is currently in talks with “other partners in Asean” about possible FTAs as well, Singapore’s The Straits Times reported.

He also called for joint efforts with Asean to tackle monopolies by high-tech companies to allow a “healthy competition and the introduction of new promising ideas”, The Straits Times said.

Ministry of Commerce secretary of state Tek Reth Kamrong told reporters in March that the EAEU has provided tariff-free access for 46 Cambodian made products for three years due to the Kingdom’s Least Developed Countries (LDC) classification.

Though preferential status will last until Cambodia has graduated from its LDC rank, Reth Kamrong said the negotiation for an FTA deal with the bloc is a good initiative.

EAEU tariff preferences granted to Cambodian goods include rice, silk, textiles, meat, vegetables and coffee.

Garment, textile and footwear industry exports rose 13.18 per cent year-on-year during the first nine months of this year to more than $7.973 billion, data from the General Department of Customs and Excise shows.
