FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

At least five people died and 37 people were injured as of 5 p.m. Thursday as a fire engulfed a soundproof tunnel on a highway in Gwacheon, southern Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday afternoon.

President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered the Interior Ministry and Health Ministry to conduct a thorough search at the scene of the incident to prevent more deaths. He also ordered an all-out inspection of the road structures like sound barriers to check whether the materials used are fire-prone, in a move to prevent the fire from repeating, according to a presidential office spokesperson.

Fire authorities earlier revealed that six were found dead, but later made a correction regarding the death toll.

The incident was first reported to the fire authorities at 1:49 p.m. on the eastbound Second Gyeongin Expressway near North Uiwang Interchange. Over 200 calls followed.

The fire gutted the hundreds of meters-long tunnel-shaped structure, covering a bridge that traverses an industrial complex called the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town.

Forty-four cars were trapped under the structure along the road when the fire broke out, causing drivers to get out of their cars and run from the fire.

The crack of fire started with the collision of a cargo truck and a bus, which soon spread to the sound barrier.

Casualties include bus passengers. Among the injured, three are reported to be in critical condition with facial burns. The remaining 34 suffered minor injuries from inhaling toxic gas.

Fire authorities issued a second-stage emergency response order at 2:22 p.m. to mobilize firefighting apparatus from up to 14 fire stations, 10 minutes after the milder first-stage order was in place. So far, 94 apparatus including fire trucks were dispatched to the scene of the disaster with 219 firefighters.

Fire authorities said they damped down the flames at 3:18 p.m, and extinguished the fire at 4:12 p.m.

The fire department is also looking further into the degree of the damage and the cause of the fire.

Police mobilized over 240 police officers to block traffic from both directions near the site on the expressway connecting Yeongjongdo Island in Incheon and SeongnamGyeonggi Province, following the deadly incident. Police and Gwacheon Metropolitan Government public servants also blocked cars from accessing the road under the bridge within a one-kilometre range due to objects falling from the fire on the bridge.

Trump tax returns to be released by US House panel on Friday

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

Former Republican President Donald Trump’s redacted tax returns will be made public on Friday, a spokesperson for the US House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee said on Thursday.

The Democratic-controlled committee obtained the returns last month as part of an investigation into Trump’s taxes, after a lengthy court battle that ended with the US Supreme Court ruling in the committee’s favour.

The committee released a report on its findings last week, which said the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) broke its own rules by not auditing Trump for three of the four years of his presidency.

The documents to be released on Friday are expected to include Trump’s tax returns filed between 2015 and 2021, the years he ran for and served as president.

A spokesperson for Trump declined to comment.

Trump’s tax returns were not released alongside last week’s report because they contained sensitive information that had to be redacted before publication, committee members said.

Democrats on the committee said making the returns public was necessary to understand the context of its report, which also included legislation that would mandate the IRS to audit presidents.

Trump was the first presidential candidate in decades not to release his tax returns during either of his campaigns for president.

Democrats on the committee had only a few weeks to decide how to handle the returns once they got them before Republicans retake control of the US House in January after winning a narrow margin of victory in November’s midterm elections.

Bicycle trend in Japan boosts demand for parking solutions

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

In September, Katsushika Ward in Tokyo opened a new bicycle parking lot that can accommodate over 400 bicycles in an underground facility that resembles the set of a sci-fi movie.

The number of cyclists has surged amid the Covid-19 pandemic, increasing demand for bicycle parking lots in city centres.

Located a five-minute walk away from JR Shin-Koiwa StationKatsushika Ward’s new parking lot features an automated loading system: All users have to do is set their bikes in the right position and push a button, after which the system whisks the bicycles into the subterranean storage space.

Giken Ltd., the developer of the parking lot, has installed underground facilities at 14 locations in Tokyo. The Koichi-based company said it has seen a surge in demand for its parking lots, especially in central Tokyo where it is difficult to secure land near stations.

Municipalities also hope the facilities will deter people from leaving bicycles on sidewalks near stations.

An innovative measure adopted to deter on-street parking includes trick art warning signs, which the municipality of Hachioji in Tokyo installed in March of last year in cooperation with engineering students from Takushoku University. “Many cafes don’t have bicycle storage space, so it’s very convenient,” said a customer at Cross Coffee, which opened in 2017 near an intersection that many cyclists pass in Inagi.

“The number of new customers has increased by 20%-30%, and the cafe is crowded with bicycle enthusiasts,” said Ryutaro Nakamoto, the 38-year-old manager of Cross Coffee. “We hope customers take a timeout to enjoy a cup of coffee here, before setting off again for an enjoyable and safe bike ride.”

Sang Anakot Thai and Thai Sang Thai announce electoral alliance

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

Two new parties led by veteran politicians on Thursday announced their alliance in a bid to return to the political arena in the next general election.

The Sang Anakot Thai Party and Thai Sang Thai Party held a joint press conference at 10am on Thursday to announce the alliance.

On Wednesday, the two parties had told reporters that they would hold discussions on Thursday, leading to speculation that the two parties would announce a merger.

The Thai Sang Thai was formed Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, a former core member of the Pheu Thai Party, while the Sang Anakot Thai was set up by Uttama Saowanayon and Sontirat Sontijirawong, two founders of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP).

Uttama, now the leader of Sang Anakot Thai, and Sontirat, party secretary-general, had left the PPRP after they were sidelined by the faction that is loyal to PPRP leader General Prawit Wongsuwan.

Speaking at the press conference on Thursday, Sudarat said she used to work in politics with Somkid Jatusripitak, chief strategist of Sang Anakot Thai, for several years in the former Thai Rak Thai governments.

Sudarat said both she and Somkid had long political experience and both agreed that if Thailand was left with the current problems, it would be hard for the new generations.

Sang Anakot Thai and Thai Sang Thai announce electoral allianceShe said her party had decided to become an ally of the Sang Anakot Thai to find solutions for the country.

She said the two allies will exchange ideas to find solutions so that the country would be able to move forward.

Speaking at the same press conference, Somkid said he has been working in politics for almost 20 years and he has never seen “the worst situation” like what was happening now.

“Political parties are fighting for candidates openly at a magnitude that has never happened. MPs resigned and switched parties every day. The government, meanwhile, cannot tackle the people’s economic hardship,” Somkid said.

“In my eyes, Khunying Sudarat is a democratic fighter. I regard her as my younger sister, who is very strong. She works hard and is a good mum and wife who devotes herself for the country,” Somkid said.

Somkid declined to talk about the possibility of him being nominated as a prime minister candidate but said he would regard it as god’s gift if he does become the prime minister one day.

Most major highways in Thailand were choc-a-bloc on Friday (December 30) as holidaymakers headed out of Bangkok to welcome the New Year upcountry.

The Interior Ministry’s Road Safety Centre also reported that 37 people were killed in road accidents in the first of Thailand’s infamous “7 dangerous days”.

Meanwhile, early-bird motorists heading Northeast on the Friendship Highway hit congestion as early as Thursday night, as thousands of Bangkokians headed home to Isaan.

Bottlenecks were spotted on Phaholyothin and Asia highways in the early hours of Friday, the first day of the four-day weekend.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

The Foreign Ministry is working with Cambodian forensic authorities to identify Thai victims of the huge fire that gutted a Poipet casino and contact their relatives to transport their bodies home.

At least 19 bodies have been found so far but the death toll is expected to surge. Dozens of Thai workers and customers are believed to have been trapped inside the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino when fire tore through the building on Wednesday night.

The casino-hotel complex is located near the Ban Klong Luk checkpoint in Sa Kaew’s Aranyaprathet district and owned by convicted fugitive Thai politician Vatana Asavahame.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by noon on Thursday, by which time the complex was gutted.

The ministry has ordered the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh to work with local authorities to help Thais and their family members in Cambodia who have been affected by the fire.

The embassy has compiled a list of Thais in Cambodia and prepared travel documents in case they want to return home, ministry spokeswoman Kanchana Patarachoke said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Sa Kaew authorities have set up an emergency help centre in the parking lot of Aranyaprathet district office on Thursday. The centre will coordinate with relatives of Thais who were working or residing in the hotel to locate and identify their relatives in case they are among the injured or deceased. The centre can be reached by phone at 081 172 2603 or 063 901 2903.

Cambodian casino fire kills 19, dozens more missing

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

At least 19 people were killed and up to 30 were missing after a huge fire tore through a casino-hotel complex in a Cambodian town on the Thai border, officials said on Thursday.

“The number of deaths may reach more than 20,” said Sek Sokhom, head of the Banteay Meanchey provincial information department.

Sixty people had been injured, he said.

A Thai rescuer at the scene said they recovered 14 bodies before the figure was later updated to 19.

Rescuers struggled to extricate people who feared being trapped.

Khieu Sopheak, an interior ministry spokesperson, had earlier said it was not clear how many people were still inside the charred building.

About 400 employees and patrons were in the Grand Diamond City casino and hotel in the town of Poipet when the fire broke out around midnight, and up to 30 were still missing.

A key part of Cambodia’s tourism industry, important for its economy, casinos in the capital of Phnom Penh and on the borders with Vietnam and Thailand are a draw for visitors from Asian nations that ban gambling.

Casinos in Poipet are hugely popular with short-term Thai visitors in particular as gambling is illegal and unlicensed casinos operate underground in the neighbouring country.

At least 25 people were being treated in hospitals in Sa Kaeo province across the border, Thai authorities said.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

Police on Wednesday arrested four Chinese nationals in Bangkok for allegedly selling counterfeit tumblers and mugs of American multinational coffeeshop operator Starbucks.

The suspects were arrested at a warehouse located in a luxury housing estate in Watcharapol area and an unnamed shop in Khlong Thom Market. Police confiscated 10,000 counterfeit tumblers and mugs, as well as sales records and parcel boxes worth 5 million baht.

The suspects were charged with “having in possession for distribution goods bearing a counterfeit trademark or imitated trademark in order to mislead the public”, the police’s Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) said.

The arrest came after police was tipped off by Starbucks Corporation that pirated versions of the company’s products were being sold by a shop named “Nanan Sale” on the online shopping platform Shopee.

“Following investigation, it was found that the pirated goods were kept in a warehouse located in a luxury housing estate in the Watcharapol area,” the ECD said, adding that the warehouse was owned by a group of Chinese business people.

The suspects have reportedly pleaded guilty to smuggling pirated goods from China and selling them via online platforms. Police are pursuing legal actions against the suspects.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

A 56-year-old woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined 123 million baht by the Phra Khanong Criminal Court on Thursday for falsifying documents in order to steal more than 250 million baht from her bedridden 82-year-old mother.

Mawadee Sriwirat was found guilty of colluding to falsify documents to siphon money from the bank accounts of her mother, Huai.

The lawsuit, filed in 2019, said that Mawadee and four staff of Kasikorn Bank colluded in the crime.

While her mother was seriously ill, Mawadee was accused of changing the conditions of withdrawing money from Huai’s accounts at two bank branches with the help of bank staff, according to the lawsuit.

Instead of requiring a signature, Mawadee and her accomplices changed the process so that only a thumbprint was required.

This allowed her to withdraw more than 250 million from Huai’s bank, which she did in scores of small transactions.

Huai was unaware that her signature was no longer required to withdraw cash from her bank accounts.

The court found Mawadee guilty of falsifying documents and 84 counts of theft. The court also ordered her to repay 123 million baht to her mother – the plaintiff in the case.
One of the four bank officials who were co-defendants was sentenced to two years in prison, while the other three were acquitted.

In a separate civil case, Huai sued Kasikorn Bank, the four bank employees, and her daughter Mawadee, demanding 350.3 million baht in damages in connection with the theft. The civil case is being tried by the Phra Khanong Civil Court.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

More than 1,000 resistance forces were involved in a fierce battle against Myanmar junta troops at a Karen town near the border with Thailand.

Reports said many people were killed and injured in the armed clashes that have continued for over two weeks in a battle for the control of Kawkareik, a town in Myanmar’s Karen State.

The exact number of casualties could not be independently confirmed.

Kawkareik sits on the road to a major border crossing at Mae Sot district, Tak province, in western Thailand.

More than 1,000 resistance fighters from Division 6 of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People’s Defence Force (PDF) attacked military bases around Kawkareik, killing and injuring many junta troops, reports said.

The KNLA siege of the town prompted aerial bombings with MiG-29 and helicopters, as well as mortar gun shelling, on the resistance forces. The junta troops have failed to retake control of the seized area from the resistance forces, the reports said.

Citing the rebel forces, The Irrawaddy online media outlet reported on Wednesday that at least 25 Myanmar junta troops have been killed in two weeks of clashes with the KNLA and other resistance groups in Kawkareik.

It quoted local residents as saying that the junta aimed to retake the township and it was targeting civilian areas with shelling and airstrikes.

Some residents told The Nation in a telephone interview that recent shelling had damaged four houses and a temple, which also left 10 people dead, including a monk, and many others injured.

Some sources on the Thai side of the border said that the recent clashes in the Karen State could have something to do with the Myanmar junta’s plan to reopen the border checkpoint at Myawaddy, across the border from Mae Sot, on January 1.
