Over 9 million people in Thailand could have been infected with Covid, says specialist

A Thai medical expert believes the number of Covid-19 cases worldwide was at least 10 times higher than official figures.

Dr Manoon Leechawengwong, a respiratory specialist at Wichaiyut Hospital, said that the number of people infected with the novel coronavirus around the world was under-reported. The number of people reported to be infected with Covid-19 in the whole world is 10 times less than the actual number, he said.

Epidemiological scientists have said that the reported numbers were like the tip of an iceberg, because there were many people who don’t get tested even with symptoms and there were many others who were asymptomatic and unchecked. There are now 215 million confirmed cases worldwide, and possibly as many as 2.150 billion, or about a quarter of the world’s population, the specialist said.

As for Thailand, there are 20,000 cumulative reports of coronavirus cases with the estimated daily number as high as 120,000 or more. The cumulative number of confirmed cases is now 1.13 million. It is possible that the number of real cases may be as high as 9 million, accounting for 13 per cent of Thai population, he said.

Thais don’t have to panic when they see the number of infected people as high as 9 million and instead should be glad, as a person who has recovered will not be exposed to the current strain of the virus and will not infect others, he explained.

Cargo train damaged after attack by suspected insurgents in Narathiwat

A special cargo train carrying agricultural products was partially damaged after a bomb and gun attacks by suspected insurgents in the deep South. The incidents happened a kilometre away from Tanyong Mat railway station in Narathiwat province.

Gunshots were fired at officers but no one was injured.

At 12.20pm on Saturday, a bomb exploded on a railway track at the 1104 kilometre mark, between Ban Pha Pai and Tanyong Mat stations, while train No. 986 was approaching the Tanyong Mat station in Ra-ngae district. Several gunshots were fired at the carriage where the convoy was stationed.

The train was the first special cargo train, routed from Sungai Kolok to Bangkok to transport agricultural products and parcels from the southern border provinces in a bid to alleviate the suffering from the Covid-19 control and travel restrictions of farmers, merchants and people in the South.

The fifth compartment of third class locomotive No. 440, which was carrying fruits from farmers in the southern border provinces, was damaged. None of the staff or passengers were injured.

However, after the incident, the State Railway of Thailand indefinitely suspend the special train operations, as it was intended for transporting agricultural products during the oversupply season and to increase distribution opportunity for farmers and traders.

BMA launches new Line account to help treat Covid patients

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) launched a Line application account on Saturday to provide initial medical treatment to Covid-19 patients.

BMA Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Saturday that the BMA had set up a system to notify Covid-19 patients for hospitalisation via LINE@ account “@BKKCOVID19CONNECT”.

The account is to screen the patients with RT-PCR or antigen positive test result. Medical staff will initially assess the symptoms after the patient’s personal information is logged on to the system. Patients with mild symptoms will receive home isolation treatment, while patients with more severe symptoms would be sent to the community centre, a field hospital or a hospitel for further medical treatment.

The “@BKKCOVID19CONNECT” account can be added via LINE application, or through the link shorturl.asia/afk0S .

Govt expects to vaccinate 70 per cent of population by year-end

At least 70 per cent of Thai citizens would be fully vaccinated by the year-end, the Public Health Ministry said.

Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said once the vaccination of the elderly, people with chronic diseases and pregnant women was finished, the ministry would vaccinate the general public and children aged 12 years or above.

He said guidelines to contain the spread of Covid-19 would focus on reducing the number of infections and deaths, and easing restrictions gradually to enable people to live under new normal principles safely.

He added that restrictions would be eased based on the outbreak situation, vaccination coverage and implementation of preventive measures, such as bubble and seal and universal prevention.

“Universal prevention is the principle to protect one self from Covid-19 based on the assumption that everyone may be infected with the virus, such as by avoiding going outdoors unless necessary and disinfecting frequently touched areas. If they are at risk of infection, they should take an antigen test for Covid-19,” he explained.

He expected the Covid-19 situation to improve once the vaccination achieves the target and people folliw the universal prevention principle.

As of Saturday, 22,617,701 people were given the first shot, 7,221,368 people were given the second shot, and 581,438 people were given the third shot, bringing total Covid-19 vaccine doses administered to 30,420,507.

Supreme Court rejects bail plea of ex-Revenue Department chief jailed over VAT refund fraud

The bail application of the convicted former director-general of the Revenue Department, Satit Rungkasiri, was rejected by the Supreme Court on Saturday.

The court said Satit’s bail application was rejected due to the high penalty imposed on him and the risk of flight.

The Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on August 19 had sentenced Satit to life imprisonment and jailed two accomplices while also ordering them to reimburse the state for lost revenue due to their corruption in allowing VAT refunds to 25 companies which were not eligible for them.

The court said their actions had cost the state THB3.09 billion from 2012 to 2013.

In 2015, Satit was suspended from government service by Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, and was sacked by the Finance Ministry the same year.

Heavy rains forecast for Central and East regions, with risk of flash floods

Persistent rainfall has been forecast for most of the country, with heavy rain and isolated very heavy rain in the Central and East regions, the Thailand Meteorological Department said on Sunday.

“People in risky areas should beware of the severe conditions that may cause overflows and flash floods,” the department said.

A monsoon trough lies across the lower North, the Central, the East and the lower Northeast regions into a low-pressure cell over the lower South China Sea, the department explained.

“In addition, a moderate southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand,” the department said.

Waves 1-2 metres high and above two metres during thundershowers were likely in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, the department said.

All ships have been advised to proceed with caution.
