Thailand’s Covid-19 caseload dipped slightly to 11,975 with 127 deaths in the past 24 hours on Saturday. Of the new cases, 92 were in prisons.

Meanwhile, 14,700 people have recovered and been discharged over the past 24 hours.

Thailand’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,549,285 – 1,408,602 of whom have recovered, 124,540 are still in hospitals and 16,143 have died.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 231.91 million on Saturday, 208.53 million of whom have recovered, 18.63 million are active cases (95,451 in severe condition) and 4.75 million have died (up by 8,458).

Thailand ranks 29th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 43.67 million, followed by India with 33.62 million, Brazil with 21.33 million, the UK with 7.60 million and Russia with 7.38 million.

Five tourism associations have proposed that the government provide Bt10 billion in financial assistance to help entrepreneurs get their businesses ready for the reopening of Thailand, Adit Chairattananont, secretary-general of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), said on Friday.

The other four associations who joined ATTA’s petition were: the Thai Hotels Association, the Thai Transportation Operators Association, the Association of Domestic Travel, and the Thai Spa Association.

“Loans totalling Bt10 billion will help tourism entrepreneurs who have been affected by the lockdown measures during the Covid-19 situation so that they can resume providing services after the country reopens,” he said. “The loan should also have special conditions to facilitate borrowers, such as waiving non-performing loan checks and allowing the use of unencumbered vehicles and property as collateral.”

Adit added that the ATTA will consult its members and those of other associations regarding the obstacles in applying for previous government-sponsored loans and will present the findings to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports as well as the Fiscal Policy Office to help design an appropriate loan programme.

Meanwhile Chote Trachu, permanent secretary of Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has said that the ministry has discussed the proposed loan with the Government Savings Bank and Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand, who said that they can allocate the loan amount of Bt10 billion, but other loan conditions are yet to be considered.

“The ministry is gathering names and details of entrepreneurs who wish to apply for the loan and will present it to the Fiscal Policy Office next week. The loan conditions will be announced by Ministry of Finance once it has considered all related details,” he added.

The Facebook page of a business entity claiming to sell dog meat triggered an uproar on social media, especially among dog lovers.

This week, a page named “Nuea Ma Tae Sakon Nakhon by Wittaya” (The real dog meats of Sakon Nakhon by Wittaya) was set up. The business’ FB page claimed that it had over 300 dog meat items and several grades of the meat for sale. The meat prices range from 50 baht to 4,000 baht per 200 grams.

The page also claimed that some premium dog meats were imported from foreign countries, five times a week.

The business came under attack from social media users, particularly dog lovers, who oppose the idea of dog consumption. However, some netizens believed the so-called business was a prank. Many others questioned the reliability of the claims, as “Sakon Nakhon” figures in the page name but when local authorities checked the location of the business, they could not find it in the province.

The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) on Friday warned online sellers to display the price and description of their products and services clearly.

The DIT has also forbid sellers via Facebook, Instagram, Line, websites, and other platforms to only reveal the price through private messages or personal calls.

Violaters will be fined up to 10,000 baht. Those who provide information on such practices will receive 25 per cent of the fine as reward, the department said.

The evidence could be in the form of chat messages, price in the private messages, and the bank account of the seller.

People could inform or report online sellers to the DIT on hotline 1569 or email at 1569@dit.go.th

The government would import Covid-19 vaccines for children aged 3 and above provided there was evidence that they were efficient and safe, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday.

“Currently the average vaccination rate in Thailand is 600,000 to 800,000 doses per day, and we aim to increase it to prevent the spread of the delta variant, and to give a booster shot for those who had already received two jabs,” he said.

“Another important issue at the moment is to procure vaccines for children aged over 12 years, as Covid-19 can be contracted by all age groups.”

Anutin added that currently the Thailand Food and Drug Administration has approved two vaccines for children aged over 12, namely Pfizer and Moderna, both are mRNA type. “There are reports that several manufacturers are developing vaccines for children as young as 3 years old and over,” he said. “The ministry is following this closely and will be ready to import such vaccines if there is proof that they can effectively prevent Covid-19 and are safe for children.”

The Royal College of Pediatricians of Thailand has advised that boys aged 12-15 years be given only one jab of Pfizer vaccine to prevent the risk of myocarditis or heart inflammation, while girls can have two jabs.

In a Blockdit post on Friday, Dr Chalermchai Boonyaleephan, vice chairman of the Public Health Commission, relayed the college’s advice, adding that the chance of myocarditis in young male recipients of Pfizer is significantly higher than in young females.

“The Thailand Food and Drug Administration has approved two vaccines for children aged 12-15, namely Pfizer and Moderna, both are mRNA type,” he said.

“Based on statistics of mRNA vaccine recipients in the United States from January to June this year, 162.2 boys aged 12-15 per 1 million doses have developed myocarditis, while only 13 girls have cases of myocarditis per 1 million doses. Cases of myocarditis also are rarely found in those who received only one jab.

“The Royal College of Pediatricians of Thailand, therefore, has suggested that we should give only one Pfizer jab to boys, while girls can get two jabs at an interval of 3-4 weeks,” he said.

“Only one jab of an mRNA vaccine can reduce the chance of hospitalisation and death from Covid-19 by 94 per cent. However, it can only prevent the risk of infection by 36 per cent, while two jabs will increase this to 88 per cent,” he added.

Chalermchai also suggested that children who have been vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine should refrain from intensive physical activity for at least one week to reduce the chance of heart inflammation. “Furthermore, before the reopening of schools, all teachers, school staffers and family members of students should be fully vaccinated to create a safe environment for children from risk of Covid-19 contraction,” he added.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Saturday that a monsoon trough lies across the lower North, the Central and the East regions, while the southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

Meanwhile, tropical depression “Dianmu” has downgraded to an active low-pressure cell over Khon Kaen province.

Abundant rains with isolated heavy to very heavy rains and strong winds are forecast for the North, the Northeast, the Central including Bangkok and its vicinity, and the East regions.

People in risky areas should beware of overflows and flash floods, the department said. Waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are about 1-2 metres high and over two metres high in thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution and keep off thundershowers, the department said.
