Most hotels in Thailand getting closer to full recovery, survey shows

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022

As many as 47% of hotels in Thailand have managed to revive their earnings to more than half of the pre-Covid levels, the Bank of Thailand’s confidence index for November showed.

“The number has risen from 32% of hotels in October,” said Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, president of the Thai Hotel Association (THA).

“This signals that Thailand’s hotel industry is on the path to recovery thanks to the influx of foreign tourists during the high season, which runs from November to March.”

The central bank and THA surveyed 113 hotels nationwide from November 11 to 27.

The survey also revealed that the occupation rate in November rose to 59% from October’s 49% due to high-season arrivals and the Apec Summit in Bangkok.

Hotel operators believe more than 50% of the rooms will be occupied as more tourists can be expected during the cool season.

Meanwhile, the employment rate among hotels has remained unchanged at 73.3% of pre-Covid levels, though 81% of the respondents have said they will hire more workers in the next three months. However, most hotels do not intend to expand their workforce by more than 10%.

As for operational costs, 75% of the respondents said they expected operational costs in the last quarter to rise from the previous quarter. The main factors behind the increase are the rising cost of raw materials; surge in electricity, water and fuel costs; and higher wages to attract skilled workers.

To mitigate the impact, hotel operators are calling on the government to expand the limit of soft loans and bring down the interest rate from 3% per year.

They also hope the government will consider extending the “Rao Tiew Duay Kan” (We Travel Together) subsidy scheme. The Cabinet is scheduled to consider the next phase of the scheme on December 20.

Thais urged to get booster shots as Covid-19 subvariant’s prevalence increases

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022

As the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths rise during the cool season, the omicron subvariant BA.2.75 has become the main subvariant of the virus circulating in Thailand, officials say.

Omicron subvariant BA.2.75 has replaced subvariant BA.5 as the main cause of infection due, in part, to the swiftness with which it spreads, officials said.

They say confusion about the different variants is one reason people neglect to get booster shots, and urge members of the public to understand that booster shots are critical to prevent people from getting infected by new variants. Those who get infected after receiving a booster shot are less likely to experience severe illness, medical experts say.

Covid-19 variants have changed since the first arrived in Thailand. Below is a list of the variants that have arrived in Thailand since 2019.

Wuhan variant

Covid-19 is believed to have originated in China’s Wuhan city, most likely jumping from bats to people before human-to-human transmission occurred. The Wuhan variant (also known as the Serine variant) spread quickly around the globe, arriving in Thailand in January 2020. The first infection detected was in a Chinese tourist who was visiting from Wuhan.

The disease spread rapidly with large clusters around Rajadamnern Stadium and in Samut Sakhon.

Beta variant (B.1.351)

This variant was first detected in South Africa. It was found in Thailand in January 2021, likely arriving via a tourist from Tanzania.

This variant was found to spread 50% quicker than the original one. Moreover, it caused severe symptoms.

Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)

This variant was first detected in the United Kingdom and arrived in Thailand in April 2021. It was first detected here in a cluster of covid-19 infections traced to a venue in Bangkok’s Thong Lor district. This variant was considered less of a threat because it was found to be less powerful than its predecessors.

Delta variant (B.1.617.2)

This variant was first detected in India. It was found in Thailand in May 2021 after a cluster of Covid-19 cases was found at a construction site in Bangkok’s Lak Si district. It spread rapidly and caused alarm because it was more dangerous than the Alpha variant and caused severe illness even among people who had been fully vaccinated.

Omicron variant

Omicron was first detected in South Africa. It reached Thailand in December 2021. The World Health Organisation announced that it was a variant of concern because it could spread quicker than previous variants even among those who were fully vaccinated.

The variant caused the number of new cases to surge in a short time. Even some people who had previously recovered from Covid-19 became sick again after being infected with this variant.

Thais urged to get booster shots as Covid-19 subvariant’s prevalence increases

Three sub-variants were subsequently detected in Thailand: BA.2, BA.4/BA.5, and BA.2.75. All spread widely.

In October 2022, Thai health officials downgraded the threat posed by Covid-19 from a “dangerous communicable disease” to a “communicable disease under surveillance”. Still, epidemiologists forecast that the disease would be more prevalent in some seasons than others.

Even though prevention measures have been eased, they are still important to protect health, doctors say, adding that the best protection is to continue getting booster shots to increase immunity against the virus. Booster shots also help decrease the severity of symptoms for those who still get infected.

Buakaw vows to do more homework after failing to knockout Ukrainian

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022

Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek went the distance against Ukrainian Oleksandr Yefimenko at their match on Friday night in Bangkok, failing to knock out his opponent as he did in his last two matches.

After ending the match in a draw, Buakaw said he would need to do his “homework” to knock out his next opponent.

The three-round exhibition match was held at Rajadamnern Muay Thai Stadium, where Buakaw knocked out his two previous opponents – Japanese fighters Yoshihiro Sato and Kota Miura – in October and August, respectively.

The 21-year-old Ukrainian managed to sweep the Thai fighter off his feet in the first round, but 40-year-odl Buakaw got back up immediately. Yefimenko’s punches were blocked by Buakaw, but he scored with low kicks as he targeted BuaKaw’s legs.

Yefimenko continued to focus on low kicks at the start of the second round, but Buakaw responded more aggressively with punches at close distance.

Buakaw took more low kicks at the start of the third round, but as it progressed, the veteran became more successful with his combinations of punches to Yefimenko’s face and kicks to his body.

Both fighters were still standing as the bell sounded. The match had no winner and will not appear in either fighters’ record.

After the match, Buakaw told reporters that the fight made him realise he had not trained enough and needed to “do more homework” before his next match to score a knockout.

Friday’s match was part of the “Rajadamnern World Series” organised by Global Sport Ventures and the Kickboxing Association of Thailand (KAT). It was sponsored by the National Sports Development Fund.

Croatia oust favourites Brazil 4-2 on penalties to reach semi-final

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022

Croatia battled past tournament favourites Brazil 4-2 on penalties on Friday (December 9) to reach the World Cup semi-finals following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

The 2018 runners-up came through their second consecutive shootout after beating Japan also on penalties in the last 16 and will now face either the Netherlands or Argentina who play each other later.

In an evening filled with tension and drama, Brazil superstar Neymar thought he had won the game when he rifled in an extra-time goal for the five-time world champions.

Croatia substitute Bruno Petkovic’s left-footed equaliser three minutes from the end of extra time drew his side level, breaking Brazilian hearts in Doha’s Education City Stadium.

The Croats kept their composure from the penalty spot as Brazil’s Marquinhos and Rodrygo failed to convert.

Croatia initially refused to be intimidated by their more illustrious opponents and in the first half successfully stifled most Brazil moves early.

Apart from a weak Vinicius Jr. shot, Brazil had little else to offer in terms of attack with Neymar off the pace and shut out by a hard-working backline.

It was Croatia who looked sharper, more skilled in their passing game and with a precise game plan, and by the end of the first half they had the upper hand in terms of possession.

A Neymar free kick just before the break did not trouble Croatia keeper Dominik Livakovic as the Brazilians, whose last win over a European opponent in the knockout phase came in their 2002 final victory over Germany, struggled to find any space.

They did, however, almost take the lead three minutes after the restart when Josko Gvardiol tried to clear the ball but almost turned it into his own goal.

Seconds later, claims for a hand ball by defender Josip Juranovic were shot down following a VAR review before Neymar was sent through by Richarlison in the 55th minute only to have his close-range effort blocked by Livakovic.

The Brazilians, who have now lost four of their last five World Cup quarter-finals all to European opposition, enjoyed a much better start to the second half and came close again in the 66th when Lucas Paqueta was denied by Livakovic.

The Croatia keeper was kept busy and stopped Neymar in the 76th and by that time had more saves in the match (seven) than his Brazil counterpart, Alisson, had in the entire tournament (five).

Livakovic parried another Paqueta shot five minutes later as the few hundred Brazil fans in the stands grew louder and more impatient and the game trickled over to extra time with Brazil coach Tite visibly nervous.

In stoppage time of the first period, Neymar, largely lacklustre until then, launched an attack outside the box, played two consecutive one-twos to bamboozle the tired Croatian defence and then rounded the keeper to equal Brazil great Pele’s record of 77 international goals.

But the Croats refused to surrender with Petkovic’s equaliser forcing penalties and coming out on top in the shootout with Livakovic saving Rodrygo’s spot kick and Marquinos hitting the post.

Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-3 in a penalty shootout to keep Lionel Messi’s World Cup dream alive on Friday (December 9) after the Dutch had snatched a 2-2 draw from the jaws of defeat in an extraordinary quarter-final.

Emiliano Martinez saved the first two Dutch penalties to give Argentina a huge advantage, and Lautaro Martinez sent Andries Noppert the wrong way to set up a date for the South Americans with Croatia in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Messi celebrated with arms aloft in front of the massed ranks of Argentina fans, his hopes of securing football’s biggest prize at the fifth attempt intact for a few more days.

A third bench-clearing melee of the match took place behind him as some of the Dutch players, distraught after coming so close to one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history, clashed with their Argentine rivals.

Apparently on their way home at 2-0 down with only seven minutes of normal time remaining, the Dutch scored twice through substitute Wout Weghorst to send the match to two scoreless periods of extra time.

Messi, almost inevitably, had played a major role in giving Argentina their lead.

While it was Nahuel Molina’s goal that put Argentina ahead in the 35th minute, it was Messi who unlocked a suffocating Dutch defence that had snuffed out any previous chances.

The 35-year-old took the ball 40 metres out and ghosted to his left in front of a wall of markers before sliding a pass back to the right to Molina on the edge of the box.

ArgentinaArgentina

The wingback took a touch and poked the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Andries Noppert to send the vast majority of the 88,235 crowd at Lusail Stadium into paroxysms of delight.

There was more delirium for the Albiceleste faithful in the 73rd minute when Messi slapped a penalty kick in the right midriff of the net after Denzel Dumfries had fouled Marcos Acuna on the edge of the box.

With tactics more reminiscent of Sunday park football than Total Football, the Dutch got back into the contest by bombarding the Argentine area with high balls aimed at their tall target men.

They were rewarded with a goal in the 83rd minute when Steven Berghuis crossed from the right and his fellow substitute Wout Weghorst headed the ball past Martinez’s dive.

The Argentines held onto their lead until 11 minutes into stoppage time when Teun Koopmeiners cleverly reversed a free kick and found Weghorst free to put the ball past Martinez and level up the match.

The Argentines were shell-shocked by the turnaround in the first period of extra time but recovered their composure to pepper the Dutch goal with shots, Enzo Hernandez coming closest to scoring with a rasping effort that hit the post.

The defeat was the first for the Dutch in 20 matches going back to last year’s European Championship and brought an end to 71-year-old Louis van Gaal’s third spell as coach.

Fish Master Naoki Maeda is considered a living legend in Japan, where he has left people all over the country salivating from his spectacular fish-fileting techniques.

Now, the master has arrived in Thailand.

Restaurant company Kouen Group in concert with Foodies Trading 956 has joined hands with Japan-based Sasue Maeda fish restaurant to import the finest and freshest fish filleted by Master Maeda directly from Japan.

Maeda visited Bangkok earlier this month to meet his business partners and demonstrate his filleting techniques to a select group of chefs, food writers and restaurant owners at Terrior Ekamai.

“I feel very privileged that my license holder Big san [Ittichai Benjathanasombat – Foodies trading 956’s managing director] and Bond san [Teerapat Lertsiriprapa – Kouen Group’s CEO] have invited me to visit their business in Thailand and see how meticulous Kouen Group is in storing and managing the fish that they have imported. Also, I had a great time exchanging knowledge and experiences with Thai chefs. Thus, I am ensured my Thai partners will provide our customers with very high-quality fish,” said Maeda, the fifth-generation inheritor of Sasue Maeda restaurant, located in Yaizu city, central Shizuoka prefecture.

The Secret Behind “Umami” Tast

During the demonstration at Terrior Ekamai, Maeda displayed how he preserves freshness and maximises umami (“deliciousness”) of the fish he serves.

He applies three Japanese fish-filleting techniques – IkejimeShinkejime, and Dassujime – just after the fish have been caught, to ensure their quality is maintained.

He also uses a Tegaki, a traditional tool that looks like a small sickle, to sever the flesh between a fish gill and pectoral fin, where major arteries are located. This process is called Ikejime.

The second step, Shinkejime, involves inserting a spike quickly and directly into the spinal cord, which is usually located beneath the dorsal fin and near the caudal fin, to prevent further muscle movement and cease all motion before raising the fish up to allow its blood to flow out.

The aim of both Ikejime and Shinkejime is to ensure blood is drained from the fish, as blood is a source of bacteria that can spoil fish.

After filleting the fish, Maeda sprinkles Himalayan salt over a wooden board, puts the fillets on it and sprinkles them with salt again. This step is called Dassujime, which uses salt to remove bacteria and absorb water from the fish to bring out its original taste.

With these majestic techniques, his customers – whether they are in Japan or Thailand – receive the tastiest and highest-quality fish available.

“I am very excited that Thais can now eat first-rate fish without flying to Japan,” said Ittichai.

A Real Fish Master

With two decades’ experience, Maeda is one of the most famous fish masters in Japan.

His restaurant, Sasue Maeda, sells fish to both domestic and overseas restaurants, including some with Michelin stars as well as others listed in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Sasue Maeda uses fish from Suruga bay. It is the deepest bay in Japan and brims with natural nutrition and food that enhances the quality of fish.

The imported fish will be available for all Thais at Kouen Group’s restaurants, including Ono Sushi and Kouen premium buffet, next year.

“I am confident that Kouen Group can bring the best-quality fish from Master Maeda to all famous restaurants across Thailand as we will begin official distribution next year,” added Ittichai.

Tesla sees swift sales in Thailand as consumers snap up over 5,000 units in 3 days

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022

American electric vehicle maker Tesla has had a swift start in Thailand, with consumers reserving more than 5,000 units of the two models it is selling here within three days of their debut last week, the company announced on its Thai website on Saturday.

It has been inundated with reservations and questions since opening its website for reservations on December 7 for its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles, said executives at the Thai unit of the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) maker by market capitalisation.

Tesla Thailand also made headlines this week by announcing it would only require a 4,000-baht deposit for each model. The company also confirmed that the first batch of 1,500 units will be delivered from February.

Tesla Model Y has three types, with prices ranging from 1.95 to 2.5 million baht. The more affordable Model 3 also has three types, priced from 1.75 to 2.3 million baht.

Tesla has yet to officially join the government’s EV subsidy programme, although the Excise Department said on Friday that it is in talks with Tesla about the programme.

Under the scheme, EV automakers are entitled to subsidies and cuts on import duties of up to 150,000 baht per vehicle priced below 2 million baht, and up to 800,000 baht per vehicle selling for more than 2 million baht.

Department director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas said on Friday that more than 25,000 EVs will be sold in Thailand this year thanks to the subsidy programme, which has already distributed 81 million baht from its total budget of 2.9 billion baht.

Thailand 2nd biggest market for Porsche in the world

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 09, 2022

Thailand has proved to be the “second biggest” market after Norway when it comes to Porsche’s electrified Cayenne models.

Last year, 70% of the 1,500 Porsche vehicles sold in Thailand were hybrid-powered Cayenne SUVs, a huge jump from the 670 Porsche vehicles sold here in 2020.

Asked to comment on how Porsche, once regarded as a high-end supercar manufacturer with a handful number of sales in Thailand each year, rocketed to become a household name, Peter Rohwer, managing director of Porsche Thailand, attributed the success to modern technology.

“In the past Porsches might have been expensive sports cars to buy, but today new technology such as hybrids and EVs has helped to bring the prices down (due to special tax breaks),” he said, adding that offering engine sizes of no larger than three litres also help in minimizing retail prices.

Rohwer said Thailand is Porsche’s largest market in Southeast Asia and is the “second best market in the world for electrified Porsche Cayenne vehicles, which is a big achievement.”

Thailand 2nd biggest market for Porsche in the world

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic or the semi-conductor crisis, Porsche has been enjoying increased sales globally. Last year it delivered 301,915 vehicles worldwide, an increase of 11 per cent, while sales in Asia-Pacific markets surged by a record 51 per cent, with strong sales coming from the Taycan EV.

Earlier this year the company also started CKD assembly of the Cayenne in Malaysia, which has helped to lower retail pricing by up to 30 % in Malaysia.

Rohwer says that Porsche is seriously looking at the South East Asian countries, which promise a large customer base as well as investment opportunities, particularly in resources needed for manufacturing EV batteries.

According to Rohwer, who has been working in Thailand for 28 years, today Porsche customers in Thailand are getting younger, with as much as 35 per cent of buyers being female.

Thailand 2nd biggest market for Porsche in the world

“In the past, the average age of Porsche buyers was 55 years old but today it has dropped to 42, which means that there are a lot more customers out there,” he said. “Entrepreneurs are becoming younger and they like a strong image when it comes to the cars they drive.”

That explains a large number of visitors to the Porsche booth at the ongoing Thailand International Motor Expo. A total of 11 Porsche models are being displayed and sold at the event, which goes on until December 12 at Challenger IMPACT Muangthong Thani.
But in fact, first-time Porsche buyers need not even go for new cars, Rohwer said.

“Used Porsches are also available for 2-3 million Baht, such as the Macan or Cayenne,” he said. “The 718 is the entry model and if you can afford a used one, it will be your entry into the Porsche world.” AAS Autoservice co. ltd offers 15 years Porsche factory pre-owned warranty.

Rohwer says the typical Porsche customer doesn’t have just one, but two to three Porsches.

“They love cars, love driving,” he said. “And we sell dreams, dreams that come true. Good dreams.”

Qatar Airways to add more flights to Bangkok, manager for Indochina says

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022

Nongluck Ajanapanya

Qatar Airways will continue to add more direct flights from Bangkok to Doha, as well as other prime destinations worldwide, as the aviation industry gradually recovers from the pandemic, according to Bennet Stephens, the carrier’s newly appointed regional manager for Indochina.

Qatar Airways will add one more direct flight between Doha and Bangkok on Thursday, raising the number of direct flights per day to four, Stephens said. (Before the pandemic, Qatar Airways operated seven daily flights on the route.)

Stephens said Qatar Airways would continue recovering next year and then enter a growth phase.

We see our airline recovering 50% this year and expect to recover 70% next year,” Stephens said.

Demand for international travel is rising significantly with reservations increasing, particularly for the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

Stephens said Qatar Airways is optimistic about the industry’s future, agreeing with a forecast by the International Air Transport Association that the global airline industry could return to profitability in 2023.

The association forecasts that airlines will make a small net profit of $4.7 billion in 2023 – the first profit since 2019, when the industry earned $26.4 billion.

Although the airline industry as a whole is doing well, Stephens said issues of concern remain. First, fuel prices have risen from $60 to around $120 per barrel of oil. This can affect some carriers, but is within the range Qatar Airways can handle, Stephens said.

Travel restrictions are the second issue, Stephens said, adding that some countries may suddenly tighten border controls due to covid-19.

Stephens said he was confident that Qatar Airways’ span – 150 destinations – young fleet and premium services would keep it among the world’s top carriers.
