Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

Pawit Mahasarinand

Saturday is the last day to catch “Luna: The Immersive Musical Experience”

Last year’s number of performances that call themselves “immersive” is so high that many theatregoers lost count of it. Last month, a few members of the Thailand centre of International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) noted on a Bangkok Offstage podcast that while this phenomenon was unprecedented it could be owing to the fact that the audience wanted a new experience, after having watched recorded or streamed performances on their personal screens for more than two years.

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

The most highly anticipated, or hyped, of them all is “Luna: The Immersive Musical Experience” by Castscape and Emquartier, starting from its audition attracting a large group of professional performers to its 90-performance run that spans a few months. It’s indeed a similar hype to what a large-scale commercial musical theatre production had, pre-pandemic. The Culture section of “Thairath Plus” also named it as “Art and Performance” of the year.

Having experienced British collective Punchdrunk and National Theatre’s “The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable” 10 years ago in which a postal warehouse near Paddington station was completely and realistically transformed into a Hollywood movie studio of a bygone era, I couldn’t help having high expectation attending a work that’s labelled “immersive”.

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

The first reality check was when I arrived at “Luna’s” one-rai (1,600 square-meter) venue called Q Stadium and realized that it’s not a sport venue as the name suggests, but formerly a sport shoes department where I bought a pair of running shoes. At the registration table where “Luna’s” source of inspiration American writer Kelly Barnhill’s children’s novel “The Girl Who Drank the Moon” was for sale, I was given a media pass allowing me to take photos and video clips shorter than 15 seconds of the performance. The audience could choose between the village and forest paths—the maximum for each group was 60 people—as stories and actions differed: I did the latter as I was hoping to be taken to a more fantastical world.

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

The second reality check was about 15 metres into the “forest” as the audience saw a sound control board with blinking lights and shortly afterwards we’re seated around a performance area in front of what looked like a tree where the first scene unfolded. Later on, some with special tickets were invited to move to another area to watch another brief scene. Then, we’re asked to move to another larger space with more seats and on the way there were other scenes to watch. In the final and grandest scene, all characters and audience members were altogether. With the limited space of the venue, it’s evident that the production needed to handle the traffic of 120 audience members in addition to dozens of cast members. While it’s generally effective it’s far different from the show’s promises that the audience would walk around the space to watch the scenes and that there would be rest areas and recommendation for walking shoes; most of the time we’re seated and well rested. Also, frequently we heard the noise and voices or saw the light from a nearby scene we’re not supposed to.

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

The production design of “Luna” looked like that of children’s theatre production. In conventional playhouse, the lighting and the distance between the stage and audience could make it look magical. Here, it looked like a waste of wood and Styrofoam and was unable to create an imaginary world for the audience. By contrast, the performance by professional actors, singers and dancers was mesmerizing as they had strong concentration and could convey the play’s important messages to all members of the audience. We, with our masks on, cherished this special opportunity to watch the details of their facial expression, gestures and movements and listen to their keenly articulated dialogues and beautifully rendered songs, without the microphone, accompanied by prerecorded music which occasionally was too loud.

After almost three hours, the audience was given a brochure at the exit. To our surprise, it doesn’t contain the information on the “Luna” cast and crew but that on Chaiyapruk Foundation whose founder’s dedication to the care of Thai orphans inspired this production and to which part of the proceeds of “Luna” will be donated. I was wondering whether I had just watched a charity concert. In fact, there’s a non-immersive live orchestra version of “Luna” over the holidays last month, highlighting the fact that the songs were keenly written and composed although the whole immersive experience had much room for improvement.

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

As life slowly gets back to “new” normal while we try our best to live with new variants of the coronavirus disease, live performances return. While concertgoers are not required to wear masks, theatregoers do here. Meanwhile, news of the new Scenario musical “Phitsawat”, stage adaptation of late National Artist Thamayanti’s novel, scheduled for this June at Muangthai Rachadalai Theatre has recently caused excitement.

Will there be more performances that label themselves “immersive” here? Yes.
Will its hype be as strong as that in 2022? I don’t think so.

Much ado about “Immersive Performance”

The last five performances of “Luna: The Immersive Musical Experience” are from Wednesday (January 25) to Saturday (January 28), 7pm with a 2pm matinee on Saturday. Tickets are Bt 2,390 (plus VAT and ticketing fee), available at www.ticketmelon.com. For more details, https://www.facebook.com/castscape or email office.castscape@gmail.com

SCG Packaging outlines THB100-bn investment plan for 5 years to step up growth

SCG Packaging (SCGP), Thailand’s leading multinational consumer packaging solutions provider, is focusing on investing in high-potential segments, accelerating innovation, and providing total packaging solutions in the midst of an economic recovery.

The plan is part of a five-year investment plan worth 100 billion baht (2021-2025), with a revenue target of 200 billion baht in 2025. This year, the company plans to ramp up operations in order to maintain business growth, with a revenue target of 160 billion baht.

Wichan Jitpukdee, SCGP’s chief executive officer, told a press conference on Tuesday that the packaging industry’s overall outlook in the first quarter of 2023 would see steady recovery as China begins to reopen the country.

Meanwhile, the Asean region would benefit from the recovery of tourism, import and export, and normalisation of the manufacturing supply chain.

“These factors have a positive effect on the overall economy and product consumption while increasing demand for packaging,” he said.

However, he noted that demand for packaging consumption is quite fragile due to ongoing challenges, such as prolonged volatility in the global economy, high inflationary pressures, interest rate hikes, and a fall in consumer purchasing power in many regions, particularly in major economies such as the United States and the European Union.

He said that SCGP was already well-prepared with a strategic cost management plan for the entire year. However, in order to sustain growth, the company would focus on merger and partnership (M&P) in packaging and other areas with high growth potential, particularly consumer goods, healthcare-related products, medical supplies, and labware.

“The investment budget for this year has been set at 18 billion baht,” he disclosed.

Meanwhile, SCGP will work with customers to develop innovations and value-added packaging solutions to meet the changing lifestyles of consumers. The budget for research, development, and innovation is set at 800 million baht, he said.

Other growth strategies include improving supply chain integration, proactive management and effective planning to deal with uncertainties, and implementing the Environment-Social-Governance concept.

“In 2025, we hope to increase the proportion of environmentally friendly packaging while increasing the recyclability rate of all products to 100%. Meanwhile, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are proceeding as planned in order to achieve net zero by 2050,” Wichan stated.

Danaidej KetsuwanDanaidej Ketsuwan

SCGP’s chief financial officer, Danaidej Ketsuwan, revealed that the company had revenue of more than 146 billion baht in 2022, an increase of 18% over the same period last year.

The surge in revenue mainly came from increased production capacity and M&P.

In the meantime, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation were 19.402 billion baht, down 8% year on year. Profit at 5.801 billion baht also was down 30% over the previous year.

Danaidej explained the drop to higher energy costs and lower sales volume, as well as softening demand for packaging paper globally and regionally as a result of China’s strict lockdown.

He said SCGP needed new business ideas while strengthening its core product and it should expand into related businesses to maintain its position as the region’s leading consumer packaging provider.

How to hold a zero-carbon shareholders' meeting

How to hold a zero-carbon shareholders’ meeting

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2023

One shareholders’ meeting can harm the world beyond your imagination: piles of papers, travel by shareholders, and food waste. SET-listed Buriram Sugar (BRR) Plc has now come up with ideas for holding zero-carbon shareholders’ meetings.

Among its carbon-reduction measures, BRR refrains from printing its meeting agenda and invitation letter on paper as is traditional practice. Instead, the company asks its shareholders to download a digital meeting document and invitation letter by scanning a QR code. Not a single piece of paper is used.

BRR chief executive officer Anant Tangtongwechakit revealed that Monday’s shareholders’ meeting was held under the theme “Toward a Sustainable Future” to reduce its carbon footprint. The meeting was planned with advice from the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

The TCEB advised BRR to use a hybrid meeting format to reduce fuel consumed for shareholders’ travel. The vote at the meeting was also held electronically, using Blockchain AGM Voting technology that allowed shareholders to vote from anywhere without having to travel to the meeting venue. It also further reduced the use of paper.

Moreover, shareholders who wanted to be present physically at the meeting were encouraged to use public transport. To make it more convenient for them to do so, BRR selected a hotel that is located close to mass transit systems.

Meanwhile it encouraged those who wanted to drive to the meeting venue to share vehicles to reduce fuel consumption, Anant added.

BRR paid attention to every detail in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. The hotel was told not to use plastic, foam and fresh flowers in its decorations.

Drinking water was served in recyclable plastic bottles. No straws were handed out. For tea and coffee drinkers, the BRR provided its own sugar in glass receptacles instead of conventional paper sachets.

Adding to the carbon emission reduction measures, the hotel was selected based on its ecosystem awareness. BRR said the hotel recycles waste food into animal feed and compost to grow vegetables. The venue has been awarded Green Hotel (Bronze Level) and Asean MICE Venue Standard awards, Anant said.

Food was served to shareholders using bowls and dishes made of bagasse by Sugarcane Ecoware Co Ltd (SEW), a subsidiary of BRR. The bagasse eco-ware biodegrades in 45 days, Anant said.

The measures added up to a carbon emission reduction of over 4.3 tonnes, which is equivalent to growing a small forest.

“These measures helped us reduce carbon emissions by 4,333.65 kilograms, which is equivalent to growing 263 trees,” Anant concluded.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2023

Tall columns of flames were seen rising from Payathonzu township in Karen State in South Myanmar, some 800 metres from Kanchanaburi’s Sangkhalaburi district on Monday night.

The inferno is believed to have been started by members of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), when they set fire to the town office, military transport and communications facilities.

Residents of Nong Lu village on the border, where the Three Pagodas Pass is located, told reporters that they heard sporadic gunshots and explosions from 10pm on Monday.

There were no reports of casualties as of press time. The Royal Thai Army’s Surasee Force has been posted at the border to keep an eye on the situation. Preparations have also been made to provide assistance to Payathonzu residents who may be fleeing the fighting.

It is believed the attack was in retaliation to an attack on Saturday, when three Myanmar army aircraft hit DKBA’s training grounds, residences and other buildings in Payathonzu, in the Karen State of South Myanmar. The airstrike injured one rebel soldier.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2023

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai will travel to Ankara on Wednesday for talks aimed at boosting two-way investment between Thailand and Turkey in renewable energy, electric vehicles, agriculture, development cooperation, and the defence industry.

Don will co-chair a two-day meeting of the Thai-Turkish Joint Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation (JETC) with Turkey’s Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank, the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

The high-level bilateral meeting also aims to speed up the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and Turkey, it added.

Talks on the Thai-Turkish FTA launched in 2017 and were due to be finalised as early as 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic caused delays.

Thai exports to Turkey were worth US$1.31 billion (42.9 billion baht) in 2021, driven by shipments of cars, rubber and machinery.

Don is also due to meet with other Turkish dignitaries during his visit, including his counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

Lula says Brazil and Argentina will study common currency for trade

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2023

Brazil and Argentina are in early talks to establish a shared unit of value for bilateral trade to reduce reliance on the US dollar, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Monday, although the move is not aimed at replacing existing currencies.

In Buenos Aires on his first international visit since taking office, Lula made the comments alongside Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, a leftist ally, who said there was little decided about what would be involved in such a proposal.

“Our finance ministers are currently working (Brazil’s and Argentina’s), each with his own economic team, to make us a proposal for foreign trade and transactions between the two countries that is done in a common currency to be built after much debate and many meetings,” Lula told reporters in Buenos Aires.

The instrument is aimed at boosting trade within the Mercosur bloc – Brazil, Argentina, ParaguayUruguay, and Venezuela – and reducing reliance on the U.S. dollar.

The two South American leaders met on Monday to sign an agreement to boost bilateral trade ahead of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).

Leaders from both countries are meeting at a regional summit in the Argentine capital, where Lula vowed to resume a closer relationship after former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro distanced himself from Argentina.

The discussions surfaced as part of an agreement to boost bilateral trade with more Brazilian export financing backed by Argentina’s international collateral, a Brazilian government source said on Monday.

Argentina’s Economy minister, Sergio Massa, and his Brazilian counterpart, Fernando Haddad, gave details on shared currency to reduce reliance on the US dollar.

Massa said the shared value would be based on each member’s gross domestic product, as Haddad said it was time to boost the Mercosur trade bloc integration.

Argentina’s economy is suffering from a series of challenges, including a lack of dollars, with the government battling to replenish foreign currency reserves while also grappling with an inflation rate of nearly 100% last year.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Monday that his country supports the creation of a common currency for South America in response to the proposal by the Brazilian President and his Argentine counterpart.

“I announce that Venezuela is ready, and we support the initiative to create a Latin American and Caribbean currency,” Maduro said after leading a march against the US sanctions.

The Venezuelan leader said Brazil and Argentina’s project aims at the region’s unity as it will contribute to the “independence, union, and liberation of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

No Turkish support for Sweden’s Nato membership – Erdogan

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2023

The US State Department on Monday said Finland and Sweden are ready to join the Nato alliance after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Sweden should not expect Turkey’s support for its membership after the burning of a copy of the Koran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm at the weekend.

Sweden should not expect Turkey’s support for its Nato membership after a protest near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm at the weekend including the burning of a copy of the Koran, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.

“Those who allow such blasphemy in front of our embassy (in Stockholm) can no longer expect our support for their Nato membership,” Erdogan said in a speech after a cabinet meeting.

Protests in Stockholm on Saturday against Turkey and against Sweden’s bid to join Nato, during which a copy of the Koran was burned, have heightened tensions with Turkey, whose backing Sweden needs to gain entry to the military alliance.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters that burning books that are holy to many is a deeply disrespectful act, adding that “something can be lawful but awful.”

The Koran burning was carried out by Rasmus Paludan, leader of the Danish far-right political party Hard Line. Paludan, who also has Swedish citizenship, has staged a number of demonstrations in the past where he burned the Koran.

Several Arab countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait denounced the event. Turkey had already summoned Sweden’s ambassador and cancelled a planned visit by the Swedish defence minister to Ankara.

Sweden and Finland applied last year to join Nato following Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine but all 30 member states must approve their bids. Ankara has previously said Sweden in particular must first take a clearer stance against what it sees as terrorists, mainly Kurdish militants and a group it blames for a 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.
