THE NATION

Several foreigners dressed in traditional Thai attire were spotted posing for photographs on the grounds of Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

Thailand’s tourism industry has started picking up after many countries began lifting their travel restrictions, with as many as 11.81 million arriving last year.

Here we find out why foreigners find Thailand’s traditional dress so attractive.

Several foreigners visited Wat Arun on Sunday to pose for photographs and some even wore traditional Thai costumes to make their memories extra special.

“I feel very special and so excited to wear the Thai costumes, the first time for me to wear this Thai clothes and come to this beautiful temple. And, I think it’s a really exciting activity for tourists.” said Heidi Cheung from Hong Kong

Foreign tourists were clearly excited to find out how they look in traditional Thai clothes.

“It is so deep rooted in historical culture and things, you realise how important and significant it is for Thailand and Thai women especially,” said 24-year-old Paisley Langton, a tourist from London, England.

Many Thai traditional clothing rental shops line the streets nearby the temple, offering visitors the chance to wear the dresses and take pictures during their visit to the temple at around 150-400 baht ($4.53-$12) for two hours, depending on the added ornaments and accessories.

Jitrada Kerdkhum, the manager of a traditional dress rental shop near the temple, said her business has been thriving thanks to good feedback from tourists. She added that at least 20 dresses were rented from her shop daily.

“It helps stimulate the economy. Sales volume [has risen] since Covid-19, when we had nothing to do. We decided to rent this place and open a [clothes] rental shop.” said Jitrada Kerdkhum/manager of a Thai traditional dress rental shop

The traditional costume is considered one of Thailand’s soft powers to attract foreigners.

Nutanix Predicts Technology Trends to carry weight in 2023

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2023

Nutanix unveils the technological trends that will impact businesses in 2023, the post-pandemic era that affects all aspects, every industry, and level. Companies must pay attention to the following technological changes, which will help them adapt to changes and be ready for the future.

Cloud economics are dramatically changing – which is in turn driving new decision-making around applications and infrastructure. As businesses are facing new pressures around IT spending, many are realizing that they can’t move their applications as fast or as cost-effectively as they originally thought to the cloud. It takes a lot of valuable time and top talent to redo applications that are already running on-prem in the cloud. What won’t change in the years to come is that getting to the cloud is strategically important. But businesses will increasingly become more strategic about which workloads belong in the cloud and which belong in private cloud environments and will prioritize solutions that offer multi-cloud portability across all environments.

Nutanix Predicts Technology Trends to carry weight in 2023

Adoption of asynchronous work processes supporting contributions from workforces across the globe will be necessary in order to increase productivity. New, more effective ways to collaborate, especially across multiple time zones, will drive innovation in 2023. This will mean rethinking companies’ approach to asynchronous collaboration including tooling and policies to better support it. In order to succeed, complexity must be supplanted by simplicity and automation will become even more necessary.

The global pinch on energy supply will cause organizations to rethink their IT infrastructure models with more consideration given to power consumption and carbon footprint. Organizations are being told to be more efficient with power consumption, and it’s not just a sustainability issue. While reducing carbon footprint and going green is commendable and an increased point of consideration for potential customers, companies are feeling the impact of oversized power consumption against their bottom line when it comes to cloud usage. The cloud is built for speed and performance, not for the economy when it comes to cost and power, leaving companies to consider how tasks they’re currently pushing to the cloud might be handled elsewhere more efficiently and economically.

Untethered edge operating models will become more prevalent. In today’s world, it’s become expected that applications have to run all the time. Whether they’re connected or not means that the edge, by definition, will have to have an untethered operating model that’s not supported by closed-out models. IT organizations that valued server-based infrastructure to easily scale up and support mixed workloads will quickly find out that the same software-defined approach suits the edge by scaling down easily, operating while connected or unconnected to a central cloud, and introducing a fleet management approach that spans from the edge to the data centre to the public cloud with consistent cloud management.

Seismic shifts to social media as we know it will have a significant impact well beyond those platforms. 2022 has been a rollercoaster of a year for social media platforms, and some of the trends we’re seeing are not likely to reverse direction. This will have a trickle-down effect on multiple organizations. First, many organizations rely on data purchased from social media companies to tune their own targeting algorithms; targeting that will become less refined as social media data sets become outdated and less curated. Second, the data sets are often the basis to train AI and ML tools; as data sets become outdated, I expect AI and ML that rely on them to become much less effective.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai hosted his Portuguese counterpart João Gomes Cravinho for talks in Bangkok on Tuesday, as Thailand and its oldest European partner sought to strengthen ties.

Don and Cravinho, who was on a two-day visit to Thailand, discussed bilateral ties in economy, culture, tourism, and other sectors, according to a Thai Foreign Ministry press release. Their talks covered trade and investment in the Eastern Economic Corridor under the Thailand 4.0 policy, labour, culture, language, gastronomy and tourism.

Both foreign ministers also exchanged views on global developments such as the crises in Myanmar and Ukraine.

Former Wagner commander seeks asylum in Norway after fleeing Russia

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2023

A former commander of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group who fought in Ukraine said he has fled to Norway and is seeking asylum in fear for his life after witnessing the killing and mistreatment of Russian prisoners brought to the frontline.

Norwegian police said a foreign citizen had been arrested on the night of Thursday to Friday after illegally crossing the Russian-Norwegian border in the Arctic and was seeking asylum.

“During the night to Friday at approximately 01:58 a person was arrested in Pasvikdalen on suspicion of illegally crossing the Norwegian-Russian border, in the area of Skroeytnes. There was a person who came over and contacted the civilian population in the area. He was ungrammatically arrested by a joint border patrol between the defence and the police,” said Tarjei Sirma-Tellefsen, from the Finnmark Police District.

Andrei Medvedev, who joined the group on July 6, 2022, on a four-month contract, said in a video posted by the Gulagu.net rights group that he had crossed the border into Norway before being detained by Norwegian police.

Medvedev, an orphan who joined the Russian army and served time in prison before joining Wagner, said he had slipped away from the group after witnessing the killing of captured deserters from Wagner.

He said he crossed the border, climbing through barbed-wire fences and evading a border patrol with dogs, and heard guards firing shots as he ran through a forest and over thin and breaking ice into Norway.

His Norwegian lawyer said Medvedev was now in the “Oslo area” but did not give details.

Brynjulf Risnes, who declined to say where Medvedev was fighting in Ukraine, said Medvedev said the escape was dramatic.

“He was chased and they both fired shots and dogs were sent after him. The way he tells the story, it’s like a spy thriller, where you escape just at the last minute. He saw a light in a house on the other side and ran there, and a woman came out. There he said that he wanted to talk to the police. They called the police who arrived at the quite quickly. They were dramatic minutes and hours”.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, who founded Wagner, said that Medvedev had worked in a Norwegian unit of Wagner but had “mistreated prisoners”.

In interviews with Gulagu, Medvedev said he grew disaffected after his contract was repeatedly extended by Wagner without his consent. He said he had witnessed the killing and mistreatment of Russian prisoners who were brought to the front by Wagner.

Russia sent forces into Ukraine on Feb. 24 in what it calls a “special military operation” to “denazify” its neighbour and protect Russian security.

India set to overtake China as world’s most populous nation

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2023

India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country this year even though its population growth has been slowing down, the United Nations says.

China’s population fell last year for the first time in six decades, a historic turn that is expected to mark the start of a long period of decline in its citizen numbers with profound implications for its economy and the world.

India estimates its population at 1.38 billion, compared to China’s 1.4 billion.

At a children’s hospital in the Indian capital New Delhi, newborn babies were being kept under observation at its neonatal intensive care unit.

Doctor Rinku Sengupta Dhar, a senior consultant at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, said that although a high population has its advantages such as a young workforce, it also presented a challenge to economic growth and resources.

For Nikita Bhola, mother to a one-day-old son, however, giving her three-year-old daughter a sibling was important. Bhola said she was elated at the birth of her baby boy.

“I always wanted to have one of each,” she said.

On the streets of the Indian capital, people felt that the government needed to take steps to tame its population growth, which is actually slowing down.

The South Asian nation’s annual population growth has averaged 1.2% since 2011, down from 1.7% in the previous 10 years.

“They should bring out some rules and regulations that help in controlling our country’s population,” New Delhi resident Azhar Khan said.

“When the country’s population is in control, then only we can develop further.”

The use of family planning methods in India increased to 66.67% in 2019-21, up from 53.5% in 2015-16.

India’s total fertility rate – the number of children per woman – fell to 2 in 2019-2021, down from 3.4 in 1992-93.

With 27.3% of its population aged between 15 and 29 years, India is among the youngest countries in the world.

Vietnam President resigns amid anti-corruption drive

The Party Central Committee noted that during his term as the Prime Minister in 2016-21, Nguyen Xuan Phuc must bear the “political responsibility of the leader” as many officials had committed violations and shortcomings, causing very serious consequences.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc, 68 years old, has stepped down as President of Vietnam after a number of senior officials were found to have committed violations in connection with Covid-19 test kits and repatriation flights.

The 13th-tenure Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam convened on Tuesday and decided to relieve Nguyen Xuan Phuc of all duties, including the PresidencyPolitburo and Party Central Committee membership, and Chairman of the National Defence and Security Council for the 2021-26 term.

According to the announcement from the Party Central Committee, Nguyen Xuan Phuc is a key leader of the Vietnamese Party and State, born to a family with rich revolutionary history, and matured politically from the grassroots level.

He was entrusted by the Party Central Committee and the Politburo to hold many important Party and State leadership roles.

In 2016-21, as he served as the Prime Minister of Vietnam, the Party recognised that Phuc had made many efforts in leading the national Covid-19 response and achieved important accomplishments.

However, the Party Central Committee noted that during his term, Phuc must bear the “political responsibility of the leader” as many officials, including two Deputy Prime Ministers and three ministers, had committed violations and shortcomings, causing very serious consequences.

Two former Deputy Prime Ministers, Pham Binh Minh and Vu Duc Dam, have resigned from their positions, while two former ministers – former Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long and former Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh – and many officials have been criminally handled, in connection with the Covid-19 test kits and repatriation flights scandals.

“Fully aware of his responsibilities before the Party and people, Comrade Nguyen Xuan Phuc has submitted an application to resign from his assigned positions, and retire,” the announcement from the Party Central Committee reads.

Based on the current regulations of the Party and State and considering the wishes of Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Party Central Committee has agreed to let him resign from the positions of a member of the Politburo, member of the 13th-tenure Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Chairman of the National Defence and Security Council for the 2021-26 term.

The Party Central Committee assigned the Politburo to direct relevant agencies to implement the procedures in line with regulations.

Move Forward pledges better welfare for military, end to conscription if it comes to power

Move Forward pledges better welfare for military, end to conscription if it comes to power

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2023

The Move Forward Party on Wednesday promised to improve military welfare and abolish conscription as well as end the abuse of low-ranking soldiers if it led the next ruling coalition.

Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat made the promises in his open letter to the military to mark Royal Thai Armed Forces Day, which falls on January 18.

In the letter, Pita said his party had been emphasising the need to reform the military as the party used the name of the now-defunct Future Forward Party.

He said military reform should be treated as a national agenda and the reform must separate the Armed Forces from national politics to end the vicious circle of coups d’etat. He said the Armed Forces should be transparent and accountable to the public, in addition to making them compact and capable of responding to new national threats in time.

Pita said Move Forward sees reform of the Armed Forces as a must because the party wants to see compulsorily recruited military privates have a better quality of life.

He said his party also saw the need for reform because military privates, who volunteered to serve the country, have been abused, been given inadequate living allowances, while having an insecure future apart from being assigned to carry out work not related to military affairs.

Pita said the party also saw that military privates had been abused by commanders who do not respect their human dignity.

The Move Forward leader said some generals, who had turned politicians in the current government, and the network of generals who have vested interests in the Armed Forces, had tried to label Move Forward as enemies of the Armed Forces.

“But, actually, we stand on the opposite side of the generals who destroyed democracy by staging a coup and are doing everything to perpetuate their political power,” Pita said in the letter.

Move Forward pledges better welfare for military, end to conscription if it comes to powerHe said his party is the enemy of generals who abuse power to suppress people whom they should protect and the party stands on the opposite side of the generals who push their personal interest with tax payers’ money and refuse to come under public scrutiny.

He said that Move Forward would like to make the following promises on the occasion of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Day – if the party wins the next election:

● End compulsory conscription

● Privates will not be forced to masturbate and jump into cesspools and there will be a serious human rights protection scheme

● Privates will not be cruelly punished by commanders over disciplinary matters because Move Forward will improve military rules to meet international standards

● Military inspectors of Parliament would hear complaints of junior soldiers

● Salaries and allowances of soldiers will be wired directly to their accounts so that they will not be siphoned off by commanders

● No commanders will be allowed to siphon money off from the food budget of junior soldiers

● Promotion evaluation system will be reformed so that any deserving candidate can be promoted without nepotism

● Missions unrelated to military affairs will be eliminated

● Soldiers will no longer be dispatched to serve as personal servants at residences of generals

● Military court for general cases will be abolished for soldiers and they will be tried in civilian courts instead.

● Military will be separated from politics.

Prawit ‘ready to be PM’, pledges to boost welfare

Prawit ‘ready to be PM’, pledges to boost welfare

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2023

Deputy PM and Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) leader Prawit Wongsuwon has vowed to raise the monthly state welfare payment to 700 baht and says he is ready to be prime minister if his party returns to government after the next election.

Prawit was speaking on Tuesday at a press conference to unveil the party’s strategies and policy platform for the election, scheduled for May.

The event was joined by party executives including Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, PPRP chief strategist; Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, PPRP deputy leader, Education Minister Trinuch Thienthong, and Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn.

Prawit said the party’s priority is to increase state welfare scheme benefits that PPRP has spearheaded over the past four years as the ruling party in the government coalition.

The state welfare card currently offers 300 baht per month to holders with annual income of less than 30,000 baht and 200 baht for those earning 30,000 to 100,000 baht per year. The credit can be spent at participating shops and on transport and utility fees. Around 21.5 million Thais applied for the cards in the latest registration period.

“The current benefits are not enough to cover rising living costs in the current economy,” said Prawit.

“The party’s MPs have surveyed their constituencies and found that people need an additional 500 baht to buy consumer products and pay utility bills.”

The deputy PM pledged to implement the policy as soon as the new government is formed, explaining it would be funded by the already approved fiscal 2023 budget. He estimated that the policy will cost the government around 12 billion baht per month or 150 billion baht per year.

PPRP would also roll out measures to promote the economy, develop communities, take care of vulnerable people, and maximise the country’s competitiveness, he added.

PPRP also announced its new slogan, which translates as: “Rising above conflict, solving all problems, and improving all sectors of Thailand”.

When asked if PPRP would work with other parties, Prawit said the party would ignore past differences and welcome everyone to discuss future cooperation.

Thailand investment privileges jump 39% driven by FDI in EV, data centres

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2023

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) provided investment privileges for 2,119 projects worth 664.63 billion baht last year, said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri on Wednesday.

The number of projects rose 41% from the previous year while the worth of privileges rose 39%.

The BOI attributed the jump in investment privilege applications to the improving Covid-19 situation that had restored economic activities and investments to almost pre-pandemic level.

The government also rolled out measures to promote key industries, including electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, power generation, and data centre businesses, said Anucha.

The BOI said foreign companies accounted for 65% of investment privileges, worth a total 433.97 billion baht – a 36% rise from the previous year.

China was Thailand’s biggest foreign investor with 158 projects worth over 77.38 billion baht, or 15% of total foreign investment. Japan was second with 293 projects worth 50.76 billion baht, while the US was third with 33 projects worth 50.29 billion baht.

Industries attracting most foreign investment last year were electrical appliances, electronics, petrochemicals, chemicals, and automotive components.

“Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is confident that Thailand’s economy will continue to grow this year based on increasing confidence among Thai and foreign investors,” said Anucha. “The government is committed to upgrading the country’s industrial infrastructure and improving regulations to facilitate investment across various industries in a bid to recover our economy, promote employment and enhance the quality of life of all citizens.”
