Crush at Bang Sue vaccination centre sparks virus fears

Overcrowding sparked fears of cluster outbreaks at Bangkok’s main vaccination centre on Tuesday, after people from other provinces rushed to get injected before the walk-in measure is scrapped.

The Bang Sue Vaccination Centre was packed all day, as people took advantage of public holidays to travel to the capital for a jab.

The centre was open to senior citizens for walk-in appointments and to people from other provinces who had pre-booked their jab.

Among the crowds were people from Prachuap Khiri Khan, Samut Sakhon, Saraburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Lop Buri, Chainat, Phichit and Ang Thong. Monks from Phra Phutthabat temple in Saraburi had also made the journey for a jab.

People queuing at the centre said they had left their provinces early in the morning via pre-booked vans. Some were disappointed after being turned away because they did not meet criteria for vaccination. Many were seen pleading with officials for a jab. Others even wandered around asking if they could pose as carers for elderly people in order to be vaccinated.

The centre announced that it would suspend walk-in appointments from Thursday (July 29) and receive only people who have registered via the mobile network.

Almost 50km of Bangkok’s overhead cables buried, another 187.5km to go

The snarl of overhead cables on Bangkok streets is slowly being replaced by blue sky, the Cabinet heard on Tuesday.

Ministers acknowledged a progress report on the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA)’s project to bury the cables that disfigure the capital within three years.

The MEA project is transferring 236.1 kilometres of aerial cables underground in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan as part of a project running from 1984 to 2024.

So far, 48.6km of cables have been buried – 16.2km in Silom Road, Pathumwan and Chitralada, 24.4km on Phaholyothin, Phayathai and Sukhumvit, and 8km in Pathumwan, Chitralada and Nonsi.

That leaves another 187.5km of cables still to be buried.

The cable-burying project had a budget of 3.866 billion baht in 2020, 2.312 billion baht or 59.82 per cent of which was disbursed as of December.

The MEA reported that delayed disbursement was due to problems with design modifications, such as increasing the depth of manholes and underground conduits to avoid obstacles.

Fah talai jone approved as treatment for Covid patients

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the use of fah talai jone (green chiretta or Andrographis paniculate) to treat asymptomatic cases of Covid-19 after a successful trial of the herbal remedy in prisons. –

Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said treatment with fah talai jone would help relieve pressure on the public health system, with more than 14000 new cases being reported daily.

The trial on infected prison inmates showed fah talai jone can prevent the virus from entering cells while also reducing viral replication, Ratchada said. The Corrections Department gave the herbal remedy to 11,800 inmates with mild symptoms and 99.02 per cent of them recovered, she added.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation recommends that asymptomatic patients take 180mg of fah talai jone per day, divided into three 60mg doses at mealtimes, said Ratchada.

Former Olympic boxing legend Manus hit with lottery fraud charge

Former Olympic boxing champion Manus Boonjumnong is being sued for his alleged role in a 2-million-baht lottery scam.

On Tuesday, the former boxer and his lawyer visited Don Muang police station to acknowledge an allegation of fraud. The former Olympian did not reveal any details about the case to press.

The complainant, Anon Pinitkul, said Manus had offered to sell him a batch of lottery tickets received from another Olympic boxing legend, Somrak Kamsing. Somrak won Thailand’s first Olympic gold medal, in 1996, while Manus won gold eight years later at the Athens Games.

Anon said paid for batches of three lottery tickets from Manus. He said he paid a total of 1.452 million baht and received the first lottery batch but not the second and third.

Manus claimed he had also been cheated, so could not return the money, said Anon.

Ministers wave off ‘Covid train’ to Northeast as cases pile up in Bangkok

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob on Tuesday oversaw an operation in Bangkok to send 135 Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms to their home provinces in the Northeast by train.

Trains, buses and even planes are being deployed to ferry mild cases out of Bangkok, where health facilities are being overwhelmed by more than 2,000 new infections per day.

Tuesday’s Covid-19 train ferried patients to Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen, Yasothon and Nakhon Ratchasima. Each passenger car contained 35 Covid-19 patients and medical staff.

Guidelines on waste management and air ventilation were enforced, and an ambulance was waiting at each destination to take patients for treatment under the public health system.

Saksayam said the operation to transport mild Covid-19 cases back to their home provinces on vans, buses and Royal Thai Airforce planes will continue until the situation is resolved.

Anutin said beds were still available to treat Covid patients in other provinces, adding that sending patients back to their hometowns would reduce congestion at medical facilities in Bangkok. He also played down rumours that Bang Sue Grand Station’s Central Vaccination Centre would close, saying a decision will be made by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Tuesday afternoon.

BMA launches widespread testing, home-isolation scheme to curb spread of Covid-19

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has dispatched a response team to test residents in high-risk areas using rapid antigen test kits. The aim is to remove infected patients from the community to curb the spread of the virus.

“The test kit can provide a result within 30 minutes and is perfect for identifying asymptomatic patients,” Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Tuesday.

“Patients with mild or no symptoms will be classified as green and can be allowed home isolation if they live alone and if conditions permit, or in community isolation if they have other family members,” he said.

NBTC sets aside THB1.2 billion to cover internet bills for online classes

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will provide 79 baht per month (excluding VAT) for two months to students who have to attend online classes due to the Covid-19 shutdown, NBTC acting secretary-general Trairat Wiriyasirikul on Tuesday.

“The commission has earmarked 1.2 billion baht for this campaign, which will run from August 15 to October 15, coinciding with the first semester of the 2021 academic year,” he said.

“NBTC will provide 79 baht for fixed broadband [home internet] for two months to students in kindergarten, elementary, secondary, high-school and vocational certificate levels, as well as those in non-formal educational institutes under the Education Ministry that are conducting online classes.

“Eligible students who have a smartphone will be given unlimited data when using the following programs to attend class, namely Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, Cisco Meeting, Webex and Line Chat. They will also get an additional 2GB data on top of their current package,” he added.

“We hope this measure will help alleviate parents’ and students’ financial burden while schools are closed and classes need to be conducted online,” Trairat said.

He added that apart from supporting online classes for students, NBTC is also making contributions to other agencies that need to rely on telecom services during the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Earlier this month, NBTC made all Covid-19 related hotlines toll-free, namely 1330, 1323, 1422, 1442, 1646, 1668, 1669 and 1506,” he said. “The commission has also donated Wi-Fi routers, computers, tablets and mobile telephones to Covid-19 community isolation centres to ensure public health staff can provide telemedicine services in case of emergency.”

Medics call on US to ensure donated Pfizer shots are distributed fairly

A group of medics showed up at the US Embassy this morning to demand it oversee the distribution of donated Pfizer shots, which are due to arrive soon.

In the letter handed to chargé d’affaires Michael Heath, the medics said they were concerned that the 1.54 million doses heading to Thailand will not be fairly distributed among frontline personnel or those in the high-risk group.

The letter also said the medics were concerned about what would happen to the Pfizer batch, especially in the wake of the government’s untransparent and failed vaccine rollout.

Hence, the medics said, the US government must acknowledge this concern and do everything it can to ensure the distribution of the shots is fair, clear and transparent.
