BMA on standby as Covid cluster uncovered in Bang Na temple

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) last week confirmed a cluster of 202 infections at Wat Phong Ploy Viriyaram temple in Bangkok’s Bang Na area.

Senior monk Phrakhru Wiriyanuwat had called the BMA on Thursday after learning from a temple helper that her husband and child had contracted Covid-19. This led to widespread testing among temple staff, monks and novices and results on Sunday confirmed that some 202 people were infected. However, all are asymptomatic and have been isolated.

Medics from the Priest Hospital and clinics nearby will keep an eye on the patients, and if their status changes, they will be sent to the hospital immediately.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang had a set of four oximeters delivered to the hospital on Monday and said city authorities were on standby to offer any support the temple may need.

Government intervention sought to deal with mangosteen oversupply problem

The Thai Fruit Export Association has urged the government to solve the mangosteen oversupply problem by having agricultural cooperatives and private partners buy the fruit and gift it to Covid-19 patients.

“The Covid-19 lockdown and travel restrictions have prevented over 900 fruit resellers in the Central and East regions from travelling to plantations in the South to buy mangosteen,” the association president, Sanchai Puranachaikhiri, said on Monday.

“Currently plantations in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Narathiwat provinces have an oversupply of mangosteen.”

Sanchai added that even if the resellers are permitted to travel, they will still have a hard time selling the fruit as markets in many provinces have been ordered shut while the export routes to China and Vietnam are also restricted by the authorities to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“The only tangible solution now is to increase domestic consumption of mangosteen,” he added. “The government should order agricultural cooperatives in each province, or invite private companies to buy mangosteen and deliver it to Covid-19 treatment facilities and community isolation centres as a gift to patients. This way we can relieve the mangosteen supply problem and overcome low fruit demand due to fear of Covid-19 among consumers.”

Sanchai added that the government should also use diplomacy to negotiate with Chinese and Vietnamese authorities to open more export routes as well as shorten the Covid-19 screening process.

“In a normal situation it takes only five days to transport the fruit from plantations across borders. However, due to the Covid-19 situation the trucks are stuck at border checkpoints waiting to be processed for another 4-5 days. This has resulted in our export capacity being cut by half,” he said.

3rd shots given for shifting Covid patients from Greater Bangkok: Buri Ram police chief

The superintendent of the Buri Ram police force issued a statement on Monday explaining why 11 police officers and 29 frontline personnel in the province were given a third jab.

Photographs of Buri Ram police officers getting a third AstraZeneca shot went viral on Sunday, prompting an uproar on social media.

“The clarification stated that on July 22, there was a request from Ban Mai Chaiyaphot district health office asking for a team to transport Covid-19 patients from Bangkok and its adjacent provinces to Buri Ram for further treatment in a bid to ease congestion in hospitals,” said Pol Maj-General Paisan Luesomboon, spokesman of the Provincial Police Region 3. He was quoting Pol Colonel Su-ake Chinthanasap, Buri Ram’s Ban Mai Chaiyaphot police chief.

“Therefore, 40 personnel including 11 police officers and 29 frontline staff, including district administrative personnel, village headmen, and village health volunteers, were given the third jab in line with government policy,” he added.

Sandbox programme proposes to cut mandatory stay in Phuket to 7 days

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has revised the conditions of the Phuket “sandbox” programme on Monday, reducing mandatory stay in Phuket to seven days, while allowing tourists to spend the balance seven days on “Sealed Routes” in five other provinces.

The new timeline starts in August, subject to approval from the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.
Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said on Monday that he had consulted with the prime minister to launch the “Sealed Routes”, using Phuket as the main hub for tourists to expand their travel routes to other provinces.

“Tourists will have to spend seven days in Phuket and take the Covid-19 test twice, before they are allowed to travel through these sealed routes in five provinces, and get tested again on the 13th or 14th day of their stay. The five provinces are: Krabi, Phang-nga, Samui which will be open for tourists in August, while Chiang Mai and Lamphun will be open in October,” said Phiphat.

“Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, and Cha-am in Phetchaburi province are expected to welcome foreign tourists from October 1.
Bangkok and Pattaya, which are still in the “dark red” zone, will remain closed until the fourth quarter. Buriram province will also remain closed with the cancellation of the Thailand Motorcycle Grand Prix,” he added.

Siripakorn Chaewsamoot, TAT deputy governor for International Marketing Europe Africa, revealed that in the period July 1-19, over 9,000 tourists had flown to Phuket under the sandbox programme. Turkish Airlines and Gulf Air will also increase their flights to 34 per week within July.

“As for the European Union moving Thailand out of the White List, it has not yet affected the number of tourists travelling to Phuket as most of the tourists are from Israel, US, UK, Germany and France. Travelling abroad is allowed in these countries and self-quarantine when entering back is not required,” said Siripakorn.

Bang Sue vaccination centre ramps up operations, more walk-ins invited

People above the age of 60, those weighing above 100 kilos and pregnant women can walk in for a Covid-19 jab at Bangkok’s Bang Sue Grand Station until the end of this month.

From next month, the vaccination centre aims to deliver up to 20,000 jabs daily to people aged 18 and above as well as those with chronic disease who had registered earlier.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Monday that from May 24 to July 25, up to 988,788 jabs have been administered at the Bang Sue Grand Station. The more than 422 medics delivering the shots have not developed Covid-19 infections so far, he added.

He also advised the elderly, obese and pregnant women to get their jabs as soon as possible as they may face the risk of developing severe symptoms, which may result in death.

“Many people in the abovementioned groups have received their jabs at the centre, but we advise them to show up in the afternoon to reduce crowding,” he said.

He added that jab recipients below the age of 60 can head to the registration point without stopping to have their blood pressure measured.

“Those who have booked via the four telecom companies can use the ‘Vaccine Bang Sue’ smartphone app to fill out their information as well as a health-screening form and head to the vaccination centre on the date of their appointment,” he added.

Stay in, stay safe, pleads doctor as Thailand’s Covid cases continue to soar

A doctor in Tak’s Mae Sot district expressed her frustration at the current situation, saying frontline medics are under too much stress and depressed over the soaring infections and deaths.

“More and more Myanmar workers are found infected in factories. Some are already in a severe condition, while some have died in their homes.

Thais aged below 40 need ICU beds, while some seniors die at home. This is a tragedy nobody wants to happen,” she wrote in the “Story of Border Doctors” Facebook page on Tuesday.

The page administrator also said medics on the frontline were facing stress disorder and depression. Yet they need to motivate each other and if they have tears in their eyes, they must wipe away those tears and face the world.

“There are over 100 new cases today and some 15 are queuing for respirators due to severe pneumonia,” she added.

To add to their troubles, the Moei River is overflowing, she said.

“Everyone is tired, and resources are almost used up. The best way is to not be infected with Covid-19. The number of patients is not decreasing and this shows our preventive policy is not good enough. This disease is deadly, and fatalities are rising, and will continue rising. Medical personnel cannot save everyone. To tell the truth, I’m really exhausted,” the post read.

“Go live in an orphanage when I die,” a mother told her daughters before taking her last breath on Monday morning.

The 43-year-old’s body was removed by rescue volunteers from a flat in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district, where she lived with her two daughters, aged seven and nine.

Rescue staff said the woman is believed to have suffered Covid-19 symptoms for a few days before succumbing to the virus.

Her daughters have also tested positive and were taken to the hospital for treatment. They told reporters that their mother told them to go live in an orphanage as she took her last breath.

Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex finally gets the nod as World Heritage Site

Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex has been listed as a World Heritage Site, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-archa said on Monday.

The decision was made at the World Heritage Committee’s Extended 44th Session that is being hosted online from Fuzhou, China from July 16-31.

The 21 nations of the Unesco World Heritage Committee voted 12-9 to approve Kaeng Krachan.

“The Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex passed the committee’s 10 criteria on biodiversity after our three previous proposals in 2015, 2016 and 2019,” said Warawuit.

“To receive such a global recognition is a great achievement for Thai forest and wildlife that will help increase public awareness in nature conservation as well as increase revenue from ecotourism from both domestic and overseas tourists,” the minister said.

Thailand had listed Kaeng Krachan forests as the 28th national park in 1981. Covering an area of 1.8 million rai (2,914.7 square kilometres), the forest extends across Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. It is the largest national park of Thailand on the border with Myanmar and contiguous with the Tanintharyi Nature Reserve. The forests contain a great biodiversity of tropical vegetation, including tropical and subtropical broad leaf tree species and palms.

A total of 91 species of mammals and 461 bird species have been counted in the park.

Phuket tightens disease control measures to curb rising Covid cases

The Phuket communicable disease committee on Monday announced measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the province after 23 new cases were found.

Cumulative cases in the province rose to 995, 26 of whom are visitors under the tourism “sandbox” programme.

Of the total cases, 793 patients have been cured and discharged, 191 are still hospitalised and 11 people have died.

The measures include shutting Central Phuket shopping mall for seven days from July 27 to August 2 after new infections were found at the complex. During the closure, public health staff will perform antigen tests on mall staffers as well as disinfect the premises.

The committee also extended the closure of schools in the province from August 2 to 16 and increased restrictions on public activities from not exceeding 150 people to less than 100 people.

Football and futsal fields and badminton courts were also issued shutdown orders until further notice.

Markets must limit the number of customers to one person per four square metres.
