Man collapses on Bangkok street, do-gooder cabby takes him to hospital

A good Samaritan taxi driver came to the rescue of a man who collapsed on a sidewalk on Pracha Songkhro Road Soi 39 in Din Daeng district after witnesses and police were afraid to provide assistance, fearing he might be infected with Covid-19.

Huai Khwang station police, who were alerted at 8pm on Wednesday, went to the scene and found a Thai man aged 35-40 with shallow breath lying on the sidewalk. The victim was conscious but unable to communicate.

Police officers tried to get public health staff to come pick up the patient but none of the staff were available at the time.

At 9.21pm a taxi driver, who heard about the incident via radio, arrived at the scene and volunteered to take the man to a hospital.

The driver was attired in a PPE suit that he prepared and he had sealed off the passenger cabin of his taxi with a plastic sheet before placing the man on the back seat.

Two Covid-19 patients rally at Govt House to demand treatment

A group of seven people rallied in front of Government House in Bangkok’s Dusit district at 6.15pm on Wednesday, claiming that two participants have contracted Covid-19 and demanding the government provide proper treatment.

Earlier, the Nonthaburi New Generation Network posted on its Facebook page that at 5pm two Covid-19 patients would show up at Government House to urge the government to save their lives. The network invited the press to witness the activity while suggesting everyone wear proper protection.

Alerted to the post, police deployed 25 officers in PPE suits at the front gate to prepare for the protesters.

The two protesters who claimed to have contracted Covid-19 said they found they were infected after using an antigen rapid test kit on July 15 and have stayed at home since.

“I contacted officials to come pick me up for treatment but not a single hospital has available beds, so I came here to ask the government for help,” one of the protesters said.

“I suspect that I contracted Covid-19 while participating in a rally at Government House last week to oust General Prayut Chan-o-cha,” the protester added.

Public Health Ministry officials arrived at 6.35pm to test the two participants and found that they are in the “green category”, or infected patients with no symptoms as yet. They were subsequently transported to the isolation centre at Wat Intharawihan Temple in Phra Nakhon district.

Isolated heavy rains forecast for upper Thailand, South west coast

The upper North, upper Northeast and the South’s west coast will likely experience isolated heavy rains thanks to a monsoon trough as the southwest monsoon across the country, the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand intensifies, the Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

It warned people in upper Thailand to beware of severe conditions and accumulation of rain water that may cause flash floods.

The department also advised ships to proceed with caution and small boats to keep ashore as waves in the upper Andaman Sea are 2-3 metres high and will be more than 3 metres during thundershowers.

Here’s the weather forecast for the next 24 hours:

North: Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the area with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-25 degrees and highs of 28-33 degrees Celsius.

Northeast: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the area with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-25 degrees and highs of 29-35 degrees Celsius.

Central: Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the area; temperature lows of 24-26 degrees, highs of 33-35 degrees Celsius.

East: Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the area; temperature lows of 25-27 degrees, highs of 31-35 degrees Celsius; waves 1-2 metres high and 2 metres during thundershowers.

South (east coast): Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the area; temperature lows of 23-25 degrees, highs of 33-35 degrees Celsius; waves 1-2 metres high and 2 metres during thundershowers.

South (west coast): Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the area with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 22-26 degrees, highs of 31-33 degrees Celsius; waves 2-3 metres high and over 3 metres during thundershowers.

Bangkok and surrounding areas: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the area; temperature lows of 24-25 degrees, highs of 32-36 degrees Celsius.

First person to die after receiving mixed jabs had underlying health issues: DDC

A 39-year-old woman who died one day after receiving her second dose of vaccine in the government’s mixed-shot programme had underlying health issues, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Wednesday.

DDC deputy chief Dr Sophon Iamsirithavorn said the woman, a teacher with high blood pressure and a BMI of 31 (considered obese) received a Sinovac jab on June 28 and then an AstraZeneca jab on Monday (July 19). The woman, who was from Prachuap Khiri Khan, died on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old was the first person to die after receiving alternate vaccines, which have so far been administered to 84,000 people, Sophon said.

Her body has been sent for autopsy at King Mongkut’s Hospital, with results on the cause of death expected soon.

A total of 14.8 million vaccine doses have been administered in Thailand since vaccinations began in March.

Approximately 229 deaths after vaccination have been reported, or 16 per one million recipients.

Results from autopsies and panels of investigating experts indicate the deaths were not caused directly by the vaccine but were linked to underlying chronic conditions. The most common of these are coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease.

The risk from vaccination remains tiny compared to the risk of being fatally infected with Covid-19, say health authorities.

Health Ministry apologises for not providing enough vaccine, Covax talks in pipeline #SootinClaimon.Com

Health Ministry apologises for not providing enough vaccine, Covax talks in pipeline

A senior health official on Wednesday apologised to the public for failing to provide enough vaccine to combat Thailand’s deepening Covid-19 crisis.

Dr Nakhon Premsri, director of the National Vaccine Institute, admitted vaccine supplies may be insufficient due to the “unexpected situation” caused by the Delta variant. The country recorded a new daily high of 13,002 infections on Wednesday with 108 fatalities.

Nakhon was speaking alongside Department of Medical Sciences chief Dr Supakit Sirilak at a Public Health Ministry briefing called amid rising public criticism of the government’s vaccine-procurement programme.

Public anger was stirred on Saturday when a leaked letter from AstraZeneca to the Thai government revealed the vaccine manufacturer had promised to supply Thailand with only 5-6 million doses per month. The government had repeatedly claimed AstraZeneca would supply 10 million doses per month for the rest of the year.

Amid a shortage of AstraZeneca doses, the ministry has turned to imports of Sinovac vaccine, but the Chinese-made jabs have performed poorly against the Delta variant.

The letter also revealed that AstraZeneca had advised the Thai government in September last year to join the Covax vaccine-sharing programme. Thailand is one of only a few developing nations that have not joined Covax.

Dr Nakhon revealed that the government was now negotiating to obtain vaccines through Covax.

He added that the institute was also pushing to procure second-generation vaccines as booster shots against Delta variant in the first quarter of next year. Advance booking for the shots would be necessary, he said.

Supakit, meanwhile, said he understood the frustration of people who are still waiting to be vaccinated but insisted that the Health Ministry’s efforts are transparent and verifiable. Addressing controversy over allocation of doses, he explained that the National Vaccine Committee and various other panels were tasked with screening orders for vaccine from various agencies.

Covid jabs back on track in Bangkok

Bangkokians whose booking for a Covid-19 jab had been cancelled earlier will be given their jabs from Thursday onward.

This rescheduling applies to people aged between 18 and 59 who were initially booked for a shot between June 19 and 23.

Their new dates will be between Thursday (July 22) to Monday (July 26). Though the dates have changed, the timings and venue will remain the same. Those who find new dates inconvenient can call the 1516 vaccine hotline.

Those whose initial booking was on or after June 24 will be notified of their new vaccination date later.

Meanwhile, Bangkok residents aged 60 and above who have already registered are urged to make an appointment by calling the vaccine hotline.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is aiming to set up 50 community isolation centres across the capital in a bid to curb infections and avoid congestion in hospitals. So far, 21 of these centres are in operation.

“Each isolation centre has a special patient screening area, cafeteria for patients, cardboard beds, electronic utilities, waste-water treatment and contagious waste-disposal systems. Municipal officials will also be at hand to oversee sanitary and safety measures,” BMA permanent-secretary Silapasuay Raweesangsoon said on Wednesday while inspecting a centre in Lak Si district.

Thailand Post has also allocated its school building in Lak Si for use as an isolation centre. The 3-storey building can support 118 patients and is expected to be ready for use on Thursday.

Dishonesty lands 4 rescue volunteers, 15 nurses in isolation

Patients are being urged not to hide their Covid-19 history after exposure to one dishonest patient resulted in four medics and 15 nurses having to go into quarantine.

The Ruen Jitarsa rescue team said in a Facebook comment that people should not lie if they are at risk because they will not be left behind. The team said it has enough PPE suits to tend to Covid-19 patients.
The comment was posted after the team took a patient to Khong Hospital in Nakhon Ratchasima and doctors later learned that the patient’s relative had returned from a high-risk area.
Four members of the rescue team had to go into quarantine immediately, while the ambulance used that day was suspended from service.
Meanwhile, 15 nurses also had to go into quarantine.
