Exporters of plastic pellets will stand to gain now that the Philippines has formally announced a halt to its so-called safeguard investigation, the Foreign Trade Department said on Wednesday.
Department director-general Phithak Udomwichaiwat said the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officially announced it would stop its investigation into safeguards of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) pellets on June 3.
The probe sought to determine whether increased imports of a product were causing, or threatening to cause, serious injury to that country’s industry. During the investigation, importers, exporters and other interested parties were allowed to present evidence and views and respond to the presentations of other parties.
The formal announcement by the DTI came after the Philippine Tariff Commission issued a report on May 20 that the import of LLDPE pellets did not rise significantly as claimed, so no safeguard tariff was required.
The DTI began the probe on August 28, 2020, after a local petrochemical firm called on the government to use a “safeguard” duty to protect the local industry on the charge that imports of LLDPE pellets would increase to a level that would threaten the local industry.
Initially, the DTI found some grounds for the charge, so it ordered the Philippine Tariff Commission to launch the formal probe on September 30, 2021.
Phithak said his department strongly defended Thailand against allegations that it was jeopardising the Philippine pellet industry.
LLDPE pellets are used in making food-grade plastic bags and plastic film for wrapping food.
“The halt in the investigation will bode well for the Thai plastic pellet industry because Philippine importers can be assured that importing pellets from Thailand would not be slapped with any safeguard duty,” Phithak said.
He said plastic pellet exports ranked fourth in terms of value of total goods exported from Thailand.
According to Phithak, Thailand exported about 57 billion baht worth of plastic pellets last year, and in the first quarter of this year the value was 16 billion baht, a 30-per cent increase year-on-year.
He said China was the biggest market for Thai plastic pellets, accounting for 60 per cent of exports, followed by Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia. The Philippines ranked ninth, with a value of 1 billion baht last year.
Although the Philippines is not a big market for Thai plastic pellets, it could turn into one with good prospects in the future, Phithak added.
The Thai economy is expected to grow by 3 per cent this year and 3.7 per cent next year, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has forecast.
Speaking at a seminar on “Stronger Thailand” on Tuesday, NESDC secretary-general Danucha Pichayanan said the council had forecast the Thai economy will grow by 2.5 to 3.5 per cent, or 3 per cent median.
The NESDC has discussed with the Bank of Thailand and the Finance Ministry if the economy may grow by 3 per cent based on several economic factors such as inflation and energy price.
These organisations agreed that it could grow by 3 per cent this year as there are several positive factors such as exports, especially of food.
Moreover, Thailand is welcoming more tourists. The country has welcomed around two million foreign tourists in the past five months and is expected to welcome around 7 to 10 million tourists this year.
The NESDC has forecast that the economy will grow by 3.7 per cent next year, lower than the estimates of other economic bureaus who have forecast 4.3 to 4.5 per cent on average, while some agencies expected the economy to grow more than 5 per cent next year.
The NESDC argued that the Thai economy might not be able to recover as fast as several countries’ recovery and the Thai economy is dependent on the tourism sector, which contributes 40 per cent of Thailand’s GDP.
Meanwhile, the economic structure of other countries is related to the manufacturing sector.
Danucha said that the tourism sector could recover this year while increasing exports might help the service sector. He said revenue from tourism this year might help Thailand from its current account deficit problems of the past two years.
However, the economic situation in foreign countries is uncertain due to inflation and geopolitical risk, which Thailand must be prepared to deal with.
Danucha said, “We have already controlled the spread [of Covid-19]. We are trying to drive the economy as well as change the economic structure. Every sector, including the public and private sectors, must cooperate as there are a lot of external conflicts. However, Thais must get together to face the effects of the uncertainty that might occur in the future.”
Thailand and the United Kingdom have agreed to cooperate on six aspects to boost trade between the two countries, bringing it back to the US$7 billion [247 billion baht] level, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Tuesday.
His remark came after a Joint Economic and Trade Committee ministerial meeting at Central Hall Westminster, London.
Jurin said he and UK Minister of State for Trade Policy Penny Mordaunt agreed to promote cooperation between the two countries in agriculture, digital technology, foods and beverages, investment, commerce and finance.
He said Thailand would recover its trade value with the UK back to $7 billion as the value has dropped sharply since 2017. The trade value is currently $5.5 billion, Jurin said.
Thailand would boost its economic relationship with the UK, moving from a joint trade committee to an enhanced trade partnership and a free trade area in the future, he said.
Thailand presently has 14 FTA agreements with 18 countries.
“Currently, the UK is Thailand’s 22nd biggest trade partner globally and 4th in Europe, so we have to boost the trade value between the two countries back to $7 billion as soon as possible,” Jurin noted.
He said senior operations managers will hold a meeting to implement the plan, focusing on using the Bio-Circular-Green economic model and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation theme of “Open. Connect. Balance”.
“We believe the results of this meeting will benefit Thai exports by generating revenue. It will also help in the exchange of academics, technology and innovation, especially on a digital economy, which the UK has expertise in,” he added.
The baht opened at 35.25 to the US dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from Tuesday’s close of 35.32.
The currency is expected to move in a range between 35.20 and 35.45 on Wednesday, predicted Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool.
Poon said the baht is finding support and could strengthen as the market gradually opens to more risks.
However, there is a chance it could fluctuate and weaken during the day to test its resistance level of 35.40 to the dollar after foreign investors offloaded Thai assets, selling 7.1 billion baht worth of Thai stocks and bonds.
He suggested investors must beware of the dollar’s volatility before the US Federal Reserve chairman’s testimony to congress. If he does not signal that it is necessary to increase the interest rate by a big margin or is concerned about the shrinking economy, it might pressure the dollar to weaken.
Poon speculated that investors are gradually decreasing possession of the dollar (net long USD positions) even though it went to a new high recently. This shows most investors feel the dollar will not continue to rise and decided to sell the currency for profit.
He expects that the dollar might go down if the Fed does not signal a high rate increase, though its peak hawkishness might occur during a key meeting in July.
Poon advised investors to use hedging tools such as options to manage risks in the highly volatile currency market.
Thailand’s leading energy company, PTG Energy Plc, is running a corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaign titled “PTG Volunteers Leave No One Behind” with a focus on benefiting local communities and environment in the provinces where the company operates.
On June 17-18, PTG volunteers visited Kudnamsai and Muang Wan in Nam Phong district, Khon Kaen, to donate scholarships, learning materials, sports equipment and medical supplies to 20 schools in the two subdistricts.
Forty-three students were granted scholarships of 2,000 baht each to support their education, while volunteers helped prepare meals for schoolchildren. The PTG volunteers also helped build mushroom sheds and donated oyster mushroom substrate, vegetable seeds, and 6,000 fish hatchlings to villagers to help them grow food for meals for students and their families.
“PTG has been operating in Thailand for 33 years, during which time we have always emphasised helping society, improving people’s quality of life, and promoting environment conservation, education, and health of local people,” said PTG executive vice-president Rangsun Puangprang.
“Nam Phong district is where the company built its first oil plant and service station in the Northeast, so we are closely connected with local people here. The company estimates that the June 17-18 campaign helped to improve the quality of life for 10 communities in Muang Wan subdistrict and 14 communities in Kudnamsai.”
Besides “PTG Volunteers Leave No One Behind”, this year PTG also launched the “PT Brighter Vision” campaign, which provided 1,100 pairs of eyeglasses to underprivileged elderly people. The campaign won the “CSR of the Year 2022” title at the Thailand Top Company Awards 2022, organised by “Business+” magazine and the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.
PTG ran the two campaigns in parallel, leading a team of ophthalmologists to examine the eyes of elderly and bedridden patients in each community and prescribe glasses as needed. After the June 17-18 activity, 250 seniors in Kudnamsai and 350 in Muang Wan will each have a new pair of glasses to help make their daily life easier.
After cooking for schoolchildren on June 18, PTG’s volunteers headed to Nong Ben Reservoir in Muang Wan district to plant 300 seedlings of perennial trees around the reservoir as part of the company’s commitment to create a “green lung” for the community.
PTG is also running the “Separating Waste for Our World with PT” activity, in which volunteers will educate community leaders about the importance of separating household garbage from general waste, and how to make fertiliser for garbage. After completion of training, PTG will provide 50 bins for each community so that they can efficiently turn household garbage into fertiliser and keep the community tidy and clean.
“Since its establishment, PTG Energy Plc has been committed to supporting communities and improving local people’s quality of life, in line with our motto of “creating happy bodies, happy minds, and a happy society”, said Rangsun.
The baht opened at 35.32 to the US dollar on Tuesday, weakening from Monday’s close of 35.30.
The currency is expected to move in the range of 35.20 to 35.40 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.
Poon added that the baht may strengthen due to the weakening dollar and the market will be open to more risks.
There is still a chance of the baht fluctuating due to pressure from foreign investors selling off Thai assets, especially stocks.
Meanwhile, bond transactions are slowing down because investors believe high bond yields reflect the Bank of Thailand’s decision to increase the interest rate.
The baht’s resistance level is 35.40-35.50 to the dollar, the level at which exporters will sell the dollar.
Poon does not expect the baht to weaken past this level unless a lockdown is widely enforced in China, forcing investors to dump assets in emerging Asia markets.
Poon advised investors to use hedging tools like options to manage their risks in the highly volatile currency market.
Here comes the time to accelerate bold actions to tackle the climate crisis as it is poised to get worse.
Global oceans have recently reached their hottest and most acidic levels on record, which is a consequence of climate change led by rising greenhouse gas emissions. This has prompted the international community to come together in the Paris Agreement to set a goal for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, if member states failed to achieve this goal by 2050, then we may not be able to live on this planet the same way ever again as the heat currently generated by greenhouse gases will continue to cause global warming and affect future generations for many years to come.
The goal of net-zero emissions can be achieved if we stop or reduce activities that cause further emissions of greenhouse gases, which means we need to introduce systematic changes in the technology we use, as well as in our policies and behaviors. One of the best and most efficient ways to ensure the achievement of net-zero emissions is to seek solutions that limit global warming to 1.5 °C, which today unfortunately has already risen to 1.1 °C. Therefore, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial and must be put into practice immediately. According to the reports, the aviation industry has produced around 2 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecasted the number of air passengers will increase to 10 billion by 2050. If there is still no viable solution to reduce greenhouse gases in the aviation industry, then we may possibly face with approximately 21.2 gigatons of carbon in the future (2021-2050).
For the above-mentioned reasons, Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services Public Company Limited (BAFS), the largest aviation fuelling service provider in Thailand, with close to 40 years of experience and expertise in aircraft refueling and fuel quality inspection, has therefore adjusted its strategies to serve as an organization that always grows in parallel with global sustainability and is fully committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in order to make the net-zero emissions goal achievable. As a major milestone to demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate issues, BAFS has recently unveiled its mission to transform fossil fuels into sustainable fuels for the entire aviation business. This has led BAFS to a new strategic collaboration with Mitr Phol Group, the world’s third-largest sugar producer and Thailand’s largest manufacturer of sugar and renewable energy derived from sugarcane, a longstanding company that has been a part of Thai people for more than 66 years.
M.L. Nathasit Diskul, President of Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services Public Company Limited (BAFS), said the aviation industry is showing strong signs of recovery, where long-term growth of the global aviation industry has been expected to come mainly from the Asia-Pacific region. However, the overall industry still has to confront significant headwind. The main challenge is climate change, which will continue to severely affect how we live in the world. Reducing greenhouse gases can start immediately by adopting sustainable aviation fuel, which is a biofuel that can be mixed with conventional aviation fuel and can be produced from similar raw materials used for ethanol and biodiesel production. This is also considered a key measure supported by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to make the mission of net-zero emissions achievable by 2050.
“As the leading ethanol producer in Asia and the potential of Thai agricultural sector in providing the raw materials, I am confident that our strategic collaboration with Mitr Phol Group will be an important step for the energy and aviation sectors to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly to drive Thailand to become a hub for sustainable aviation fuel production for the region. We are not only seeking sustainability for the aviation industry and agricultural sector, but we hope to play a pivotal role in uplifting the world to a more sustainable direction for future generations,” added M.L. Nathasit.
The synergy between the two business giants unveils a tremendous effort to achieve net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases. With more than 18 years of success on the road of renewable energy development and biomass power production, Mitr Phol Group is ready to demonstrate its professional expertise in innovation, research, and technology, being able to build on the productivity of the agricultural sector and make it more innovative for other businesses. The company’s sugar business has been expanded into renewable energy (e.g. biomass power, solar energy, and ethanol), fertilizer, wood substitute, and bio-based chemicals and energy businesses. These innovation-based businesses help create economic opportunities and sustainable environmental development. The low-carbon electricity business is also considered another huge success of the company as the production of biomass electricity comes mainly from molasses, and agricultural wastes, backed by sustainable sugarcane plantation management. The starting raw materials have always remained a top priority for Mitr Phol Group’s sustainability principle, particularly since they help optimize both quality and quantity of products as well as add greater value to the bio-jet industry.
With a commitment to saving the environment in line with the government’s policy on using renewable energy, enhancing the development of technology, creating added value for by-products obtained from the agricultural sector, and using or recycling resources efficiently according to the zero-waste guidelines, Mitr Phol Group has established its ethanol business in the name of Mitr Phol Bio Fuel Company Limited to manufacture, process, and develop raw materials obtained from sugarcane to be high-quality ethanol by making use of molasses left over from sugar production and sugarcane juice as raw materials for the production of 99.5-percent pure ethanol. Since 2005, Mitr Phol Group has successfully operated a total of five ethanol production plants across the country, with a total production capacity of 1.5 liters per day or 500 million liters per year, considered one of the largest ethanol producers in the Asia.
Mr. Verajet Vongkusolkit, Chief Executive Officer – Thai Sugar, Energy, and New Business, Mitr Phol Group, unveiled the core objectives of this cooperation, reaffirming that Mitr Phol Group’s ethanol business is ready to be upgraded from the production of sugarcane-based ethanol used in the automotive industry to the development of highly innovative fuel for the large-scale aviation industry, supported by the company’s sustainable ethanol certification plans in line with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) measures determined by the ICAO. This has been expected to help evolve sustainable development in reducing greenhouse gas emissions conforming to the net-zero emissions goal set by nations around the globe, including Thailand’s Mitr Phol Group, to be achieved in 2050.
This has prompted Mitr Phol Group to collaborate with the public, private, and social sectors to progress with further business development based on the principles of sustainability, while being able to add value to the country’s economy, society, and environment. With BAFS being recognized as the No.1 aircraft refueling service provider in Thailand, possessing a common vision in developing and promoting the use of bio-jet fuel, the specialized expertise of the two business giants has been expected to be an essential tool to make the goal of reducing greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emissions achievable in reality.
“To achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions in Thailand, Mitr Phol Bio Fuel and BAFS will conduct a feasibility study on technology, production, marketing, rules, and standards related to bio-jet fuels to drive Thailand towards becoming a strategic hub for sustainable aviation fuel production in Southeast Asia, which will help maximize competitiveness for the country, build a circular economy for the agricultural, energy, and tourism industries, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions for the aviation industry in a more sustainable manner,” concluded Mr. Verajet.
Considered a very significant step in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, the collaboration between BAFS and Mitr Phol Group also promotes the development and use of clean energy for the aviation industry as well as the enhanced sustainability in operating the businesses serving as another important tool towards the ‘Fly Net Zero’ goal set by the IATA to be achieved by 2050.

(PR News) June 17, 2022, P80 is expanding its “Concentrated Longan Extract” P80 Natural Essence into a new diverse cosmetics line under the trademark ‘P80 Phyto Prime”. It will be launched in Germany this October.
It was reported on June 17, 2022 at the PM80 Limited Headquarters located at Rong Meung that there was an academic and innovative seminar of a new diverse product line that would expand the “Concentrated Longan Extract” –P80 Natural Essence into the cosmetics market.
The Chairman of PM80 Limited, Prayudh Mahagitsiri welcomed Professor Dr. Gunther K. Bonn and his team, from the Austrian Drug Screening Institute (ADSI) a world renowned research institute, located in Innsbruck, Austria. The team came to Thailand and had the opportunity to visit the factory located in Lampoon province, that produces P80 Natural Essence, an all natural herbal longan concentrate that has multiple health benefits. P80 is a herbal extract that contains five Bioactive compounds GABA, Gallic Acid, Ellagic Acid, Tannic Acid and Corilagin. It is a great source of Vitamin C and has lots of anti-oxidants. It helps in improving sleep quality and helps relieve fatigue and stress.
Prayudh said that it was a great pleasure to share that P80 Natural essence, was not only beneficial to the body but it also was good for the skin- it had an illuminating and anti-aging effect. Therefore from now on P80 would be developed into a cosmetics line, under the trademark P80 Phyto Prime and Germany would be the first country where it would be launched in October 2022.
Prayudh Mahagitsiri also known as Thailand’s very own ‘Coffee King’ for these past years, has built factories in various industries, including the following:
Instant Coffee factory- a joint venture between Nestle.
B.O.P.P Film factory.
Stainless steel factory.
Copper factory – producing 99.99% pure copper.
Initially it was not easy to setup the factories, a lot of perseverance and effort was needed because it required investments of hundreds of millions of baht. Prayudh distanced himself from expanding his businesses and factories for around 30 years, but after this period he had the intention to promote the produce of the longan farmers and therefore turned to building a factory that processed a concentrated essence from the longan fruit. This concentrated essence, P80 Natural Essence, is beneficial to the body it is a dietary supplement for consumers to have better health.
The ancient Chinese believe that the longan is a heavenly fruit and when eaten is very beneficial to the body. Even in the ancient Chinese Emperor’s palace, it was believed that the longan fruit was an elixir and provided many health benefits. Its benefits are as follows:
Has 5 Bioactive compounds
Increases the inner power/energy
Is high in Vitamin C
Contains Vitamin B
Has organic acids
Is very flavorful
Protects against viruses
Helps control blood pressure
Improves Sleep Quality
Helps relieve back and knee pain
Is a source of antioxidants
And has anti-ageing effects.
Sorakrit Wannalak, Senior Adviser- Public Communication who is in charge of communicating and publicizing the corporate image of PM80 Limited, revealed that Prayudh was very creative and whatever he carried out he would do it to his utmost best, especially in matters that were beneficial to society, to investors, and to the nation.
“When Mr Prayudh saw the benefits of the longan fruit and had the desire to support the society, especially the longan farmers, Mr Prayudh then took the step of investing a huge sum of 2 billion bahts to initiate the project. To support this industry he built a factory that extracted a concentrated longan essence, which is sold under the brand name P80. Furthermore he invested seriously into research to develop products that are beneficial to the body and to the society as a whole. This opened up new opportunities to those who wish to promote their overall health by being able to eat good things for their better well-being and better health.”
To confirm the properties of the longan fruit, according to the beliefs of the ancient Chinese and according to the texts of traditional Thai medicine as well, Prayudh has assigned the Austrian Drug Screening Institute, an internationally renowned institution in the field of analysis, to research the various properties contained in P80 Natural Essene the concentrated longan extract produced at the Lampoon factory.
After the research and analysis was completed they were delighted to inform the results, that P80 Natural Essence was rich in vitamins, had antioxidants, 5 bioactive compounds and many other benefits and could even protect against various viruses.
Professor Dr Gunther K. Bonn from the Austrian Drug Screening Institute, Innsbruck, Austria shared during this seminar that “I also truly believe in P80 Natural Essence and am confident in the intentions of Mr Prayudh Mahagitsiri and extremely glad to be able to search for things that are beneficial for the body. This is also to meet the needs of the new generation who want to consume things that are natural and beneficial for their health.
“Furthermore, since the Thai people are now aware about this information, they should take the opportunity to look for P80 Natural Essence and consume it for their own health benefits. This would also allow P80 Natural Essence to create a good reputation for Thailand. I also recommend this to foreigners and the global market so that they are able to consume something beneficial that was ‘born’ in Thailand.”
