Khmer makeup artist lives Hollywood dream

Khmer makeup artist lives Hollywood dream

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022

Kim Kardashian is one of the most famous reality stars on the planet. She is also known as the queen of unique makeup. For Halloween, she caused a stir when she dressed up as Mystique, a character from the X-Men movies.

To create the blue body paint and gold hair ensemble, a team of four makeup artists worked on her for four hours. One of the team was a Cambodian girl from Stung Treng province.

Almost halfway through the world, the young Cambodian woman posted pictures of the costume to her Instagram account, with a simple caption.

“From Stung Treng province, Cambodia, to here, Hollywood, this is a dream,” she wrote.

Dou Poth Molita, better known as “Apple Love”, has followed her dream to the top of the Hollywood ladder.

“Because Kim Kardashian is a busy personality with a lot of work to do, we only had limited time,” Apple said.

“To speed up the application of the makeup, we formed a team of four artists,” she added.

Thanks to a non-disclosure agreement – standard protocol when dealing with A-list celebrities – she cannot reveal too much but explained that her team works on many similar projects, although no one with the profile of a Kardashian.

Apple Love, whose mother is an accounting clerk at the provincial education department and whose father is a construction worker, said there were not many experts in the area she specialises in, even in Hollywood.

Therefore, she was directly responsible for focusing on Kardashian’s bald head and making sure the gold hair was applied just so.

“I did make up for her and her children. I had to be very careful preparing her daughter North West’s hair,” she said.

She discovered her love for makeup artistry when her friend asked her to join a makeup team on a movie. Since then she has worked on many films and music videos. Lately, she collaborated with Cambodian director Cayleeso on a feature film called “The Harvest”, which will be screened in Cambodia next year.

In the late 2000s, Apple left her hometown in Stung Treng province to study in Phnom Penh, alone.

In 2011, she was honoured to work on Angelina Jolie’s “First they Killed my Father”.

With six or seven years of experience as a makeup artist in Cambodia, in 2017 she received a scholarship to study special effects at the Cinema Makeup School, a well-known makeup school in the US. After graduating in 2018, she decided to stay in Hollywood and pursue her dream.

“The demand for special effects in the US is much higher than it is in Cambodia. I would struggle to earn a living in the kingdom because our film producers do not have as much experience utilising advanced make-up and special effects,” she said.

Apple told The Post that she promised to return to Cambodia soon to run special classes for Khmer who want to acquire her skills, just as she did earlier this year.

“I taught eight students in Cambodia during February and March. However, I am not sure there is demand for full-time classes. In addition, I provided most of the materials, which were expensive, out of my own pocket,” she said.

“I am not discouraged. I know that this kind of makeup is not yet popular in the film industry there – and US productions have much larger budgets,” she added.

“If production budgets remain limited in the kingdom, then it may be many years before there is any demand for my skills,” she continued.

As one of Apple’s eight students, Sin Thuokna has been interested in special effects makeup ever since he was young, thanks to a love of movies.

The 27-year-old from Pralay Sdao village, Talos commune, Moung Russey district, Battambang province, said he had always wanted to learn from a professional.

“I started learning to paint on paper, before practising on peoples’ skin. When I heard Apple was visiting the kingdom and offering a course, I contacted her and asked for the details. Unfortunately, the four-day course cost $800 [28,445 baht], and I could not afford to participate,” he explained.

Just a few days before the course began, Apple messaged Thuokna personally, offering him free admission, with all study materials included.

Although the course was short, he said his solid foundation in painting meant he was able to learn a lot from the classes.

He said he was very happy to learn more about his passion and to have a chance to use expensive professional dyes and colours.

“I think special effects makeup is an important skill in any film industry. Cambodia needs to let the world know that we have the skills to match the world, but we need the capital to support us,” he said.

“If an opportunity for sponsorship to study abroad became available, I would pursue it. Unfortunately, I lack the funds to do it on my own,” said the painter, who is becoming well-known in his own right for his comedic paintings.

Although at first glance, applying makeup does not appear to require a lot of physical effort, Apple said the job often involved standing for long periods and lifting heavy cases.

She said the job required a lot of creativity and high energy levels. Many of the most difficult aspects involve working with glue and chemicals and using one’s own judgement to produce practical, but realistic, results.

“For example, after being made up, Kim Kardashian went to functions with three or four Hollywood stars in one night. It required a high degree of skill on my part to make sure the dyes lasted up to five or six hours, even if she was sweating. Most of my work involves transporting a lot of materials. I have to carry large things, as well as work long hours,” she explained.

“I need to make sure I get enough rest and eat a lot because sometimes I have to work 12 hours on location, or stand for four or five hours without being able to sit,” she added.

Apple Love hoped Cambodia’s film industry would embrace modern effects, as she believed they have led to more creative, unique productions.

“Combining western techniques with the quality of the producers and writers working in Cambodia would create incredible spectacles which would elevate the growth of the kingdom’s industry,” she said.

“Thank you for your continued support. After my success with Kim Kardashian, I was pleased to see so many Cambodian fans sharing my excitement on social media,”

Leaders at G-20 summit condemn war in Ukraine, call for ceasefire

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022

Leaders of the Group of 20 (G-20) nations on Tuesday condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine, deploring its devastating impact on the global economy, as Moscow launched new missile attacks on Kyiv.

Without making a direct mention of the conflict, Indonesian President Joko Widodo warned that ending the war was the responsibility of nations for the sake of current and future generations.

“If the war doesn’t end, it will be difficult for the world to move forward,” he said in his opening address at the two-day G-20 Leaders’ Summit at the Apurva Kempinski hotel in Bali.

“We should not divide the world into parts. We must not allow the world to fall into another Cold War,” he added.

Seventeen leaders gathered for the summit, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and United States President Joe Biden. But Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen cut short his trip after testing positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday.

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin skipped the summit, despite Widodo’s efforts to persuade them to come to Bali to start a dialogue.

Putin is represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who reportedly flew out of Bali on Tuesday.

Missiles rained down on Ukraine on Tuesday as the G-20 summit was underway, hitting many parts of the country, including Kyiv in north-central Ukraine and Lviv in the west.

In a special video address on Tuesday morning before the latest countrywide bombings in Ukraine, Zelensky appealed to the G-20 leaders to pressure Russia to withdraw its troops after nine months of fighting.

“I am convinced now is the time when Russia’s destructive war must and can be stopped,” he said.

He also called on G-20 leaders to adopt a 10-point peace formula and end the war on the basis of the United Nations Charter and international law.

The pleas for peace and unity were echoed by other leaders.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak slammed Russia’s “barbaric war” and called its “weaponisation of energy and food” totally unacceptable.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi renewed his calls for a “return to the path of ceasefire and diplomacy in Ukraine”.

India, which will take over the G-20 presidency and host the summit next year, has been widely seen as a potential broker for peace due to its good relationship with both the West and Russia.

In talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the summit, Xi stressed China’s position on the Ukraine crisis was “clear and consistent” – it stood for a ceasefire, cessation of the conflict and peace talks.

The French presidency said in a statement that the consequences of this conflict went beyond Europe’s borders and should be overcome with close cooperation between France and China, Reuters reported.

A draft leaders’ declaration seen by The Straits Times said that “most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine”. It also stressed the war “is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy – constraining growth, increasing inflation, disrupting supply chains, heightening energy and food insecurity, and elevating financial stability risks”.

“Today’s era must not be of war,” said the document, which also noted that some countries have “other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions”.

The document must still be approved by G-20 leaders before it is officially issued at the close of the summit on Wednesday.

The Bali meeting focuses on three main areas – global health systems, sustainable energy transition and digital transformation – but the Ukraine crisis has marred a few G-20 meetings due to a lack of consensus among member states.

For example, the finance ministers’ meeting in July and the climate talks in August ended without a joint communique.

Widodo urged the leaders to put aside their differences and come up with concrete actions to heal the global economy, stressing that Indonesia “has made every effort to bridge very deep, very wide differences”.

“However, success will only be achieved if all of us, without exception, are committed, work hard, and put aside our differences to produce something concrete, something that is beneficial to the world,” he added.

Jurin to be Democrat Party’s PM candidate in next election

Jurin to be Democrat Party’s PM candidate in next election

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022

The Democrat Party is still united under the leadership of Jurin Laksanawisit who will be nominated as the party’s prime minister candidate despite mass defections of former MPs and speculation about resignations by current MPs, the party’s spokesman said.

Democrat spokesman Rames Ratanachaweng said on Wednesday the party is confident that its supporters acknowledge and accept the capability of Jurin who has proved himself with integrity during his long political journey.

“We are confident that the people have realised about the long political journey of Jurin, who has proved his capability and his integrity,” Rames said.

“He has experience in both the executive and legislative branches with clear-cut achievements. For the next general election, Jurin will be the Democrat prime ministerial candidate and we are confident he will receive public support.”

He said the Democrat has fully made preparations for the next election in both party’s platform and tentative candidates in several provinces.

“We are simply waiting for the right timing to announce the candidates,” the spokesman added.

The Election Commission has announced May 7 as the tentative election date, if the current House completes its four-year tenure as scheduled on March 24.

The Democrat spokesman said the party cannot tell whether the House would be dissolved before March 24 because the power to dissolve the House belongs to the prime minister.

“It won’t be long before the next election will come up and the Democrats are always ready for it,” the spokesman added.

Jurin to be Democrat Party’s PM candidate in next electionRegarding mass defections of former MPs and speculation of many current MPs also bolting the party, Rames said the resignations had nothing to do with the party.

He said individual Democrat politicians make their own decisions for their own political career and the party respected their decisions.

“They had personal reasons for resignations and they had no conflicts with the party, the party leader, secretary-general or with the executive board,” Rames said.

“It’s not fair to say that they quit because of internal conflicts. We hereby affirm that the party is not reeling from the resignations. We still move on by adhering to the public and national interests,” Rames said.

There have been rumours that several active MPs of the Democrat, Thailand’s oldest political party, would quit the party once the House is dissolved or shortly before the House completes its term so that they could join new parties to contest the next election.

It has been reported that many were unhappy with Jurin’s leadership and had decided to leave – mostly quietly to avoid damaging the party’s reputation.

Jurin was elected Democrat leader after Abhisit Vejjajiva failed to lead the Democrat to political victory in the 2019 election. Many blamed the party’s defeat on Abhisit’s announcement before the 2019 election that the Democrat would not support General Prayut Chan-o-cha for prime minister.

Over 20 former MPs have left the party since the 2019 election. The latest resignation was of veteran Democrat member Trairong Suwannakhiri, who was reported to have joined the newly-established Ruam Thai Sang Chart (RTSC) Party. Trairong quit the Democrat on October 27.

Big-name Democrats who quit this year included Thavorn Senniam, Thawil Praisont, Witthaya Kaewparadai, and Ekkanat Promphan.

Assoc Prof Dr Yutthaporn Isarachai, a political science lecturer at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, said in his recent political analysis that Jurin’s leadership might not be well accepted among Democrat veterans and the party under his leadership lacks unity.

Yuthtaporn expects some 10 Democrat MPs to follow Trairong and join the RTSC. He said the Democrat Party may win fewer than 30 House seats in the next election.

Paetongtarn: Thais expect benefits from Apec Summit as in 2003

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022

Thais are expecting benefits from economic partnerships and international politics during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit this week, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s youngest daughter said on Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the so-called “Pheu Thai Family”, urged the present government led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to host the summit in such a way that it brings maximum benefit to the country and people.

Paetongtarn explained that in 2003, the then government, led by the Thai Rak Thai Party, had organised the Apec Summit to boost the country’s economy after the “Tom Yum Kung” financial crisis and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak.

Thaksin was the leader of the government at that time.

Eight months after a military coup forced him into exile, the party was dissolved on May 30, 2007, by the Constitutional Tribunal for violating electoral laws.

“At that time, the Apec Summit was an important opportunity to create as much benefits as possible for the people,” she said.

Paetongtarn said the government was committed to creating cooperation among 21 Apec economies with the aim to create jobs and opportunities, generate income for farmers and exporters, and help the economy recover.

“We hope Thailand will benefit from the Apec Summit this year too, similar to 19 years ago,” she said, adding that the Thai Rak Thai-led government had paid attention to people’s needs.

She also pointed out that many Apec economies were interested in Thailand at that time, adding that the kingdom had been dubbed the “fifth tiger of Asia”.

“What we are expecting is not who has been invited to Thailand or how big the Apec Summit is, but what Thai people will receive from economic partnerships or international politics,” she added.

Thailand was selected to host the all-important Apec Summit in 1992 and 2003.

Avoid Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway until Friday, police advise

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2022

The Highway Police on Wednesday advised motorists to avoid the Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway until Friday (November 18), as a part of the highway will be closed to facilitate the travel of participants of the 2022 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit and related meetings, which are being held in Bangkok this week.

The police said a section of Highway 7, also known as the Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway, from Srinagarindra Intersection (heading to Sirat Expressway) to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli District, will be closed intermittently from November 16 to 18.

Motorists have therefore been advised to avoid the route and plan their trip ahead, as well as spare some extra time if they have to take a detour.

Police officer slightly injured in blast near Pattani school

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2022

A police officer sustained a minor injury in an explosion near a school in Pattani province on Wednesday night.

At 8.30pm, Panare station police were alerted to the explosion at a junction in front of Ban Kha To school in Panare district.

A police officer who was patrolling the area, Sergeant Anucha Yamasa, reportedly sustained a minor injury on his leg from the blast and was taken to Panare hospital.

Officials are gathering evidence to track down the group responsible for the attack.

Separately, police at Rueso Station in Narathiwat province on Wednesday evening were called to investigate an explosion at a security checkpoint at Ban Rueso Market.

A preliminary investigation found an exploded pipe bomb. There were no reports of any deaths or injuries.

At around 6.25pm, while officers were canvassing the scene, an unknown number of insurgents threw a pipe bomb at the team, prompting them to return fire and sending the insurgents fleeing. There were no reports of any injuries.

A security officer believed the series of attacks are an attempt to discredit the government during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Bangkok this week.

Earlier on Tuesday night, four insurgents carried out two bomb attacks at two petrol stations in Pattani, prompting Army Area 4 to launch a manhunt.

The almost simultaneous attacks occurred at about 8pm at a PTT station on Highway 42 near the Pattani bus terminal in Tambon Bana, Muang district, and a PT station on the same highway in Tambon Piya Murang in Yaring district. The blast at the PT station slightly injured a worker.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2022

Thailand and Vietnam are celebrating ten years of strategic partnership, aiming to strengthen relations for peace, stability and mutual prosperity, the Foreign Ministry said.

At the invitation of Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse Tran Nguyet Thu met Prayut at Government House on Wednesday prior to attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok.

As the first official visit to Thailand by a Vietnamese leader in 24 years, the meeting “marked a historic milestone in the ever-closer relations between the two countries”.

President Phuc attended a welcome ceremony, a bilateral meeting with Prayut and a dinner hosted by the prime minister at Government House.

During his stay in Thailand, Phuc also has other engagements with Thailand’s leaders and business circles of the two countries.

The two leaders held wide-ranging discussions on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest in an atmosphere of trust, sincerity and cordiality, according to Thailand’s Foreign Ministry.

Taking into account adverse impacts on developing countries from ongoing geopolitical challenges, both leaders expressed their determination to strengthen Thai-Vietnamese relations in all areas, including security, trade, investment, sustainable development and people-to-people ties in order to reduce impacts from such external factors.

As two major economies of Southeast Asia with immense potential, Thailand and Vietnam will also synergise their strengths and economic cooperation to achieve a strong, sustainable, resilient recovery from the Covid-19 situation in both countries, the ministry said.

Such efforts will accelerate economic integration of the broader Mekong Sub-region and propel growth and development of this region at the heart of East Asia.

As two active and constructive players in regional and international affairs, Thailand and Vietnam agreed to enhance coordination and partnership to promote peace, stability and development in the Mekong, Asean and the broader region.

The two leaders were pleased that both countries have continued to maintain regular consultations and visits at all levels to move forward bilateral cooperation, despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in the past few years.

They noted in particular the successful convening of the 4th Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation in 2021, the 4th Joint Trade Committee in 2022, and the 2nd Thailand-Vietnam Energy Forum in 2022 in Thailand.

Both leaders were pleased with the “robust developments” and “upward trajectory” of Thai-Vietnamese relations and welcomed the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of strategic partnership between the two countries in 2023, the ministry said.

The two leaders expressed confidence in the great potential for further development of this partnership and agreed to open a new chapter for peace, stability and mutual prosperity. In this context, the two leaders witnessed the signing of the Plan of Action on Implementing the Thailand-Vietnam Strengthened Strategic Partnership 2022-2027, which will guide the strategic partnership between the two countries into the next decade.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa on Wednesday held discussions with US special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Convention Centre in Egypt.

Both Thailand and the US have been participating in the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as the 27th Conference of the Parties, or COP27, in Egypt from November 6 to 18.

Accompanying Varawut were ministry permanent secretary Jatuporn Buruspat, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources director-general Atthaphol Charoenchansa, Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning Office secretary-general Phirun Saiyasitpanich, and Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation executive director Kiatchai Maitriwong.

After the discussions, Varawut said he highlighted Thailand’s resolution and goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2030 as outlined in the Nationally Determined Contributions, as well as a long-term strategy to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.

Among the measures to be implemented are the Bio-Circular-Green Economy model to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Varawut said Kerry expressed concern over methane gas emissions in Thailand and around the world, as methane is actually a greater contributor to global warming than carbon dioxide.

“Methane is 26-28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide,” said Varawut. “In Thailand, methane emissions have been found in agricultural and animal husbandry sectors, especially from the millions of rai of rice paddy that have been flooded for extended periods.”

Varawut and Kerry vowed to work with each other and together with other countries to reduce methane emissions in a bid to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels, under the 2016 Paris Agreement.

The US envoy then invited Thailand to sign a methane emission reduction agreement. Varawut said he would discuss the issue with the Labour and Agriculture and Cooperative ministries, which are responsible for the agricultural and livestock sectors, before proposing the agreement to the Cabinet for approval.

Final preparations were underway amid beefed-up security in Bangkok, Thailand, for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit later this week.

World leaders will gather at the two-day regional meeting from Friday (November 18) to discuss trade and economic cooperation.

Heavy security presence and riot police were seen in the city on roads leading to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) where the summit will be held.

Trained sniffer dogs from the police canine unit were spotted working on the grounds surrounding the venue.

“The security operations carried out by all the officers for this event are of national interest to maintain order. We are providing high level security to ensure the safety of the world leaders attending the meetings.” THAI NATIONAL POLICE CHIEF DAMRONGSAK KITTIPRAPHAT said

“As this is a global-level meeting, we don’t want to see any disruption. If any chaos (from political protests) were to happen, the police would have to enforce the law and implement it effectively.”

The country’s national police chief Damrongsak Kittipraphat warned against any political protests and said police would enforce the law “effectively” in the event of any disruption.

First-prize winner of government lottery must wait until Nov 21 to get money

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022

First-prize winners of government lottery tickets must wait until November 21 to claim their rewards, the Government Lottery Office (GLO) announced on Wednesday.

GLO director Noon Sansanakom said that lucky buyers of government lottery tickets for the November 16 draw cannot claim the first prize cash of the winning tickets on the following day as usual because the government has declared November 16 to 18 as special government holidays for Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi provinces.

Since the GLO is located at Government Complex in Nonthaburi, the winners of the first prize would have to wait for the GLO to open on November 21.

The wait would be applied to both printed ticket and digital versions of the government lottery, he said.

But winners of prizes from second prizes to two and three digits can claim money from any branches of Krung Thai Bank, Government Savings Bank and Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives in case they buy printed ticket versions, Noon said.

Those who win second and other prizes apart from the first prize for the digital version can claim their rewards immediately by using the Pao Tang app of the Krung Thai Bank, the GLO director added.
