MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2022

Movie fans will not be disappointed when the “World Film Festival of Bangkok” returns next month after a five-year hiatus, according to six partners of Southeast Asia’s largest celluloid showcase.

They made the vow at a Friday press conference in SF World Cinema on the 9th floor of CentralWorld, venue for the festival’s 15th edition from December 2 to 11.

The six partners are the Culture MinistryBangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Thai Media Fund, SF CorporationThai Airways International (THAI), and long-time festival organiser Nation Group.

The 10-day festival will screen 61 movies from 51 nations and feature special activities to promote the Thai movie industry in line with the Culture Ministry’s soft-power push.

Festival director Donsaron Kovitvanitcha, an internationally acclaimed independent movie producer, unveiled this year’s theme as “Return to Cinema”.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, movie theatres were closed for months. Moviegoers had to change their behaviour, prompting the question of whether people would return to theatres,” Donsaron said.

“But people in Thai and international film circles all agree that movies are designed to be enjoyed in theatres because of the quality of image, sound and colour. We miss this optimal quality if we watch movies at home. That’s why we have to return to cinema – the theme of this year’s festival.“

Adisak Limparungpattanakij, Nation Group’s special adviser on festival organisation, recounted the history of the movie showcase across three decades.

“It has been over 20 years since we held the inaugural festival in 1998. The first edition was called Bangkok Film Festival,” Adisak said.

“That year, we felt Thailand should have an international film festival and, as an English-language media organisation, we connected Thailand to the global community. This is one role of Nation Group’s media operations.

“Past editions of the World Film Festival of Bangkok launched new faces in the movie industry, especially the independent sector. They received new opportunities and got a chance to show their movies to international audiences.”

Under the directorship of the late Kriengsak “Victor” Silakong, the festival rose to become part of the international film festival calendar, he added.

Suvannee Chinchiewchan, chief operating officer of SF Corporation, confirmed the “World Film Festival of Bangkok” had contributed to the development of the movie industry in Thailand and abroad.

The “soft power” of movies to showcase countries’ fashion, tourism, culture and foods boosted economies, she added.

Suvanee also hailed cinema’s evolution into a sophisticated art form best appreciated in the cinema.

In the past, we only watched the story and cinematography. But now moviemaking has evolved with better designs and modern sound techniques,” she said.

“As a result, watching movies in theatres is much better than at home because we have technology for isolating sound designs created by producers and directors,” she added, inviting everyone to test her theory by checking out the festival.

The showcase is also part of City Hall’s plans to boost economic recovery in the capital, said Pimuk Simaroj, secretary to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.

“We need various activities to revive economic activity,’ Pimuk explained, adding that the private sector had a key role to play.

Pramote Boonnumsuk, of the Culture Ministry’s Thai Media Fund (TMF), said the “World Film Festival of Bangkok” is a major platform for movies made with government support.

Film is among the state’s 5Fs stimulus policy along with food, fighting, fashion and festivals.

“We have granted funds and provided knowledge to lift moviemakers to the international level,” Pramote said.

This festival will see the debut screening of TMF-funded film “A Time to Fly”.

Thai Airways said it was backing the festival as a soft-power showcase of Thailand’s culture. THAI has channels to support new-face movie directors, added the airline’s head of Brand Product and Digital Marketing, Viruj Ruchipongse.

“We believe that THAI can be a starting point for Thai directors launching films on to the international stage,” Viruj said.

The press conference was also joined by Wanasiri Morakul, adviser to the Culture Ministry which oversees film festivals.

The 10-day event will feature 61 films and 20 experimental movies from 51 countries.

Films being screened will showcase a truly global variety of nationalities, languages and cultures, including gender diversity, to reflect people’s way of life around the world.

The festival will also connect the international film community, with directors, actors and movie experts from around the world scheduled to make appearances.

Acclaimed films by new directors will vie for the Lotus Award.

Spain’s trained on Monday (November 14) for the first time since Luis Enrique confirmed his 26-man squad for the Qatar World Cup.

In a joyful, relaxed mood, players trained at Las Rozas soccer city training ahead of their friendly match against Jordan in Amman on Thursday.

After that match, the squad will travel to Doha.

Twelve years on from their World Cup triumph in South Africa, Spain is aiming for a second World Cup title at the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 tournament.

The absence of veterans like De Gea, Thiago and Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso points to the manager’s preference to go all-in with Spain’s new generation of talent.

The Spanish team face Costa Rica, Germany and Japan in Group E.

THE NATION

Portugal’s World Cup build-up was over-shadowed on Monday by the comments of captain Cristiano Ronaldo who said he felt “‘betrayed” by his club Manchester United.

For the last two decades or so, Portugal has arrived at every major tournament with all eyes on Ronaldo.

He was left out of Manchester United’s final game before the World Cup for the second match in a row after the club said he had an undisclosed illness.

Manchester United said it was trying to establish the full facts behind Ronaldo’s interview with television presenter Piers Morgan.

The Portugal great said he did not respect United manager Erik ten Hag and he felt “betrayed.”

The 37-year-old forward has been showing signs of a let-down for the first time in his career and will enter what could be his last World Cup without the status of indisputable starter.

Even with Portugal he recently was relegated to the bench, something unimaginable not long ago.

The team’s hopes of doing well at World Cups and European Championships were mostly dependent on whether Ronaldo could successfully lead his team to victory.

He will still be Portugal’s biggest star in Qatar, but this time there will be lot more to Portugal than Ronaldo.

2016 European champions Portugal are in Group H together with Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea.

Portugal will start their World Cup campaign against Ghana on 24 November.

Pork jowl: A relished cut in Vietnam

Pork jowl: A relished cut in Vietnam

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2022

Pork jowl, a cut from the pig’s cheek, has been used to process different kinds of food in many countries. In Vietnam, this cut is used to create many delicacies.

This small area of a pig’s cheek weighs only about 300 grams after the fat is removed and has a special structure. It is both soft and chewy, fatty but not greasy. It is often sold together with the nose and ears to make minced pork.

Many people add pork jowl to boost the consistency of fish stew.

In Vietnam, there are many dishes made from pork jowl.

Stew with quail eggs

The recipe for this dish is nearly the same as normal pork stew dishes. The pork jowl must be rinsed properly before it is marinated with salt, fish sauce, chopped shallot and chilli. Quail eggs should be boiled and shelled.

After some 20 minutes, stir the pork jowl with some coconut milk, before adding eggs and cook for a few more minutes. Add some caramel liquid to give the stew a dark red colour. This dish should be served with hot steamed rice.

“Eating the sweet and salty sauce with hot rice is especially great in winter when you need more energy to warm up your body,” said Le Anh, a housewife in Hanoi.

Fried with vegetables

The tender pork jowl goes well with vegetables like bell pepper, peas, carrot, kohlrabi, broccoli, and baby corn. The delicious taste and nutrition will please any demanding diner.

The pork should be cut in thin slices and marinated with some salt and black pepper for about 15 minutes.

In the meantime, cut the carrot, kohlrabi or bell pepper into thin pieces. Slice some onion, tomatoes, garlic, shallots and red chillies.

Fry the garlic and shallots first, then add the meat and stir well. Remove from heat when well cooked.

In the same pan, add vegetables to the fat with a splash of fish sauce and sugar to taste. Stir well until cooked.

Then add the meat and stir well before adding chilli and onions.

This dish can be sprinkled with some minced black pepper and decorated with herbs.

“This dish is suitable for people who want to cut starch from meals, but maintain protein and vitamins,” Anh said. “This dish can be eaten without rice.”

Grilled pork jowl

Normal pork can be dry after grilling, but pork jowl maintains its soft, fatty texture after being marinated.

“To save time, you can use readymade spices for grilling pork,” chef Vu Manh Dung said. “You can also bake some vegetables and roots.”

Pork jowl should be rubbed with some salt, then rinsed well, and allowed to dry. Meanwhile, cut onions and carrots into 1-centimetre pieces.

Cut garlic, lemongrass and dried shallots for the marinade, along with two spoons of barbecue sauce, one spoon of oyster oil, one spoon of soya sauce, some powdered black pepper, annatto oil/powder, turmeric powder and sesame oil. Stir well and marinate for up to two hours.

“The pork jowl can then be grilled on charcoal for 20-30 minutes until it turns a little brown,” Dũng said, adding an air fryer can also be used.

“Cover the tray with some silver foil, then grill at 170 degrees Celsius for six minutes,” he said. “Then cover the meat surface with some oil, turn the meat around and grill again at 170 degrees for another six minutes. Add vegetables and grill at 190 degrees for three minutes. Then turn the meat and vegetables to grill at 190 degrees for another three minutes.”

“The pork jowl will be firm outside and soft inside with a savoury taste and a fragrance of vegetables,” he said.

The dish can be served with kimchi or fresh salad.

PTT-Foxconn joint venture to deliver first EVs from Chonburi plant in 2024

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022

Horizon Plus, a joint venture between PTT and Foxconn, will deliver the first batch of electric vehicles from its Chonburi plant in 2024, according to its chairman.

Buranin Rattanasombat said Horizon Plus is investing around 37 billion baht (US$1 billion) in its EV plant at Rojana Nongyai Industrial Park, where he broke ground for the project on Saturday.

Initial production capacity of 50,000 EVs per year will triple to 150,000 EVs by 2030 to support growing demand in Asea, said Buranin, who doubles as PTT’s chief new business and infrastructure officer. The project will create jobs for 2,000 high-skilled workers, he added.

Buranin said Horizon Plus will operate under a BOL (Build-Operate-Localise) policy to boost long-term competitiveness of the Thai EV industry and supply chain.

Thosaporn Sirisumphand, chairman of PTT and its EV arm Arun Plus, said Saturday’s stone-laying ceremony was an important step in the Foxconn-PTT partnership towards electrification of the regional auto industry.

“As the world moves toward low-carbon society, transition to the greener transportation alternatives such as EV will play a significant role in shaping future energy sustainability,” Thosaporn said. “This aligns with PTT’s commitment to create national energy security for the country.”

Auttapol Rerkpiboon, president and CEO of PTT, said: “The collaboration focuses not only on investment in EV production but also on research and development in Thailand.”

Kay Chiu, CEO of Horizon Plus, said full automation would boost production capacity and reduce costs, while clean energy will power operations to be Asean’s most modern and efficient manufacturer. Foxconn’s experience would ensure Horizon Plus’s success and help Thailand become Asean’s EV manufacturing hub, he said.

The plant will occupy a 500,000-square-metre plot in the heart of the Eastern Economic Corridor as part of Thailand’s vision to become the region’s EV manufacturing base.

Other big EV manufacturers setting up plants and battery factories include China’s BYD, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, MG, Great Wall Motors, and Volt. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Energy Absolute (EA) has launched the region’s largest lithium battery factory in Chachoengsao.

Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Thailand rose 223 per cent in the first nine months of 2022 from the same period last year, according to the Energy Ministry.

Nation Group profits up 433% this year

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022

Nation Group (Thailand) Plc (NATION) on Monday reported net profits of 429.06 million baht in the first nine months of this year, rebounding 433% from losses of 128.95 million baht in the same period last year.

The rebound was driven by revenue from advertising sales, events organisation and sale of investments in subsidiary companies.

Revenue increased 115% year on year, with revenue from sales and services showing the biggest expansion at 37% year on year.

The media company said revenues from advertising sales and events organisation had also increased. Meanwhile, profit from selling investments in subsidiary companies rose to 457.76 million baht.

Nation Group sold 691.03 million ordinary shares in Nation Broadcasting Plc (NBC), representing 61.76% of total issued and paid-up capital of NBC. The sales reduced Nation Group’s stake in NBC from 71.45% to 9.99%. As of September 30, the group recorded profit from investments in equity of 162.27 million baht.

The company also reported a 27% rise in costs and expenses in the first nine months compared with the same period in 2021, which was in line with increasing revenues from sales and services.

Tempeh, cassava will easily fill stomachs in future, forum hears

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022

Speaking at the Global Food Security Forum held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesian Tempeh Movement co-founder Amadeus Driando Ahnan-Winarno said tempeh could help tackle food insecurity.

The forum was organised by the United States think-tank the Atlantic Council.

“In terms of nutrition, tempeh contains similar amounts of energy, protein and iron compared to beef. It has significantly higher levels of fibre and calcium and significantly lower levels of salt and saturated fat,” Amadeus said on Sunday.

He said tempeh can produce the same amount of protein as beef, with four times less energy consumed and twelve times less emissions released, at an eight times cheaper price, which translates to a greener solution for food production.

Amadeus added that the fermentation process, which originated in Indonesia 300 years ago, was very versatile when it came to basic ingredients.

“Tempeh is a fermentation process that we can apply to almost every grain except for legumes. Here I have mombin tempeh, kidney bean tempeh, black bean tempeh and almond bean tempeh. It’s a process,” he said.

“My grandpa used to eat tempeh made using the tofu industry by-product okara in the form of tempeh gembus because he couldn’t afford the whole bean tempeh,” he added.

“Tempeh is just one out of so many foods in which the research and design process has been done by our ancestors years ago that are waiting for us to dig into as treasures, as the future foods that we need to feed the people, to feed us, to feed the planet in the most sustainable ways possible.”

As well as tempeh, the forum also addressed the importance of cassava. The subject was brought up by Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto who said: “Cassava will prove to be the saviour crop of the world.”

Prabowo said cassava was the most efficient crop as it could produce 250,000 calories while only needing 65 cubic meters (cbm) of water per tonne, which was far less than rice, which needed 1,139cbm, wheat 954cbm and maize 815cbm.

“Indonesia can become the foremost producer of cassava. […] Cassava is now a strategic food crop,” Prabowo said, adding that the country was already producing instant noodles and pasta from cassava.

On top of that, he said, cassava could also be processed into bioethanol, alcohol, vitamins, bioplastics, glue, explosives and cattle feed while being 100% gluten-free with a low glycaemic index, high in iron and calcium.

Speaking at the forum, University of Jember’s agricultural technology professor Achmad Subagio said cassava could offer a solution to replace rice as Indonesia’s staple food.

“[Cassava] is very, very efficient in photosynthesis, two times more [efficient than] corn, and is also better than [many] other crops, including wheat,” Achmad said.

Indonesia has to feed a population of 273 million and for that, the country requires 45 million tonnes of carbohydrates per year.

Achmad added that Indonesia would not have enough land to feed so many mouths if it only relied on rice, as that would require a lot of water and fertiliser among other things.

“[We can’t grow rice on just any land] but we can grow cassava very well on sub-optimal land,” Achmad said, pointing out that with current technology, Indonesia could alter the prejudice against cassava being the “food of poor people” by mixing it with other ingredients to produce desirable food.

“I think for [the next] 10 years, we need to grow about 5 million hectares of cassava [so] we can provide a lot of food for the people,” he said, adding that the plant could also end up in the bioindustry development as it contained sugar that can be used to produce monosodium glutamate, sorbitol and lecithin.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen tested positive for Covid-19 in Bali, where he is slated to attend the two-day G20 summit.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the premier said: “Before leaving Cambodia, I always take Covid-19 tests. And before departing this time, I took a rapid test and the result was negative.

“I am unaware as to when I got infected. But when I arrived in Indonesia, I was tested and this morning it was confirmed to be Covid-19 positive. I have to accept this, though I don’t have any uncommon symptoms,” he said.

Hun Sen was scheduled to have a dinner meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday evening on the sidelines of the G20 summit, but he said the meeting did not take place because he was late.

Hun Sen said that to ensure other leaders’ safety, he and his delegation will return to Cambodia.

Hun Sen was expected to attend the Apec Leaders’ Informal Dialogue in Bangkok on Friday but has cancelled that too. He said he will continue working in Phnom Penh with all planned in-person meetings cancelled.

“It’s too bad that PM Hun Sen will not be attending the Apec meeting in Bangkok this week. We expect Cambodia to send its delegates to the leader-level meetings on Friday and Saturday,” Foreign Ministry’s deputy spokesman Natapanu Nopakun said on Tuesday.
