Final kiss from a Cuban legend

Buena Vista Social Club’s Omara Portuondo says ‘Adios’ to global fan club

AS REVOLUTIONS go, the emergence of Cuban music collective Buena Vista Social Club was certainly a peaceful one – but it sent cultural shock waves still vibrating today.

It is more than 20 years since the ensemble of mostly elderly musicians burst onto the scene in the mid-1990s, going on to win a Grammy and sell millions of albums globally.

But one of its last original living legends, 88-year-old singer Omara Portuondo, is still on the road – enchanting audiences around the world with her lush vocals.

Portuondo at 88: “I feel like I’m 15!”/AFP

“I feel very honoured to be able to take our culture, our music, to the entire world,” she says prior to the New York date of her “Last Kiss/Ultimo Beso” world tour, cast as her final global hurrah.

“The Cuban music, the essence of being Cuban, the way we make our music and how people receive it with so much fervour … we have to travel the world,” says the octogenarian, whose skin remains smooth and luminous against her crimson painted lips.

Gracing the stage to wild applause at a candlelit Manhattan club, Portuondo played a set of Cuban classics marked by pulsating Afro-Caribbean rhythms and warm, sensuous melodies, including the beloved “Guantanamera”.

The Buena Vista ensemble’s principal musicians came from Cuba’s pre-revolutionary musical old guard – coaxed out of retirement by Cuban star Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, the World Circuit’s Nick Gold and American guitarist Ry Cooder.

Named after a Havana members-only venue, the Buena Vista Social Club became a global household name after putting out the eventual best-selling Cuban album of all time.

The 1997 eponymous work, recorded in just six days, exported a colourful portrait of Cuba infused with lust and sizzle – in sharp contrast to the dreary image of Fidel Castro’s communist nation crafted by the capitalist West.

Shrugging off questions over US-Cuba tensions – which thawed in recent years, only to frost over again under US President Donald Trump – Portuondo remains defiant: “Nothing can stop music.”

It appears nothing can stop the Cuban diva, either. Donning a long white gown with a sheer red floral overlay, she shimmied in her seat as she brought her audience in New York to its feet.

Asked how she’s managed to keep performing decades after most hunker down for their twilight years, Portuondo raises her eyebrows at the suggestion she might be considered old.

“I feel like I’m 15!” she laughs, saying her fountain of youth is simply being born in Cuba. “We are hot, we love rhythm, joy, life.”

That sensibility, she added, has ensured the staying power of the Buena Vista Social Club – whose story has been immortalised in several documentaries including one by the acclaimed German director Wim Wenders.

Sporting a shiny red bow in her hair and gold hoop earrings, Portuondo’s steamy voice remained clear as ever, accompanied by the keys of another Cuban star, pianist Roberto Fonseca.

In his youth Fonseca attended a concert of the legend – who has worked the likes of Edith Piaf, Nat King Cole, Herbie Hancock and Chucho Valdes – and approached her afterwards to share his aspiration to play with her.

Today they share a flirty but familial relationship with chemistry as palpable offstage as on. “Now my dream has come true,” says 44-year-old Fonseca.

“Playing with her, I’m learning a lot of things. “Portuondo paints with music. It gives you a lot of knowledge about music – gives you a lot of knowledge about your own culture.”

Buena Vista Social Club’s 1997 debut album

The Buena Vista Social Club performed its “Adios” tour several years ago under the name “Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club”, given the dwindling numbers of veteran performers and an infusion of young talent.

But even if her “Last Kiss” tour truly is her ultimate, Portuondo appears set to keep performing until the end, even if only in her beloved Cuba – still her favourite spot to play.

“Hello, babies!” she croons to cheers to kick off her Manhattan concert.

When Fonseca, who plays beside her and turns her pages, told the crowd halfway through the set that the singer would take a break, she gave off airs of surprise.

As he led her offstage the enraptured audience whistled in delight, the animated Portuondo continuing to clap to the beat of conga drums, her hips never ceasing to sway.

Thai Night returns to the Cannes Film Festival

movie & TV May 13, 2019 15:06

By The Naiton

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has confirmed that it will be hosting Thai Night on Saturday, May 18 in the Grand Salon of the Intercontinental Carlton Hotel in Cannes.

Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya will preside over the event, which is dubbed “Thailand – Where Films Come Alive” and which this year celebrates the achievements of “Creative Thai” talent.

Thai Night is presented as part of the programme to support and promote Thailand’s film industry in international markets.

“Creative Thai” vision can be found in many different areas of the film industry, including production, post-production, facilities, production services, and visual effects, the department says.

“Creative Thai” skills and talent are seen both in front of and behind the camera. Since 2001 when “Fah Talai Jone” (‘Tears of the Black Tiger’) became the first Thai film to be screened at Cannes, Thailand has had a strong presence at the Cannes Film Festival.

Thai Night offers a chance to meet Thai filmmakers and representatives of the Thai film industry, including distributors, production service companies, and production facilities. In addition to the Thai Night, the Department will also host a dedicated Thailand Pavilion at the Marche du Film on Palais Level -1 Booth 22.01.

Twelve leading production, distribution, and service companies will be represented. Promotional events at Cannes and other international markets are just part of a policy of governmental support and promotion for the digital content industry.

The Department says it is committed to supporting the filmed entertainment, animation, character licensing, software and games industry, in order to develop and fulfil its potential in the international market. The digital content industry has become an increasingly important industry in Thailand, and is expected to generate revenue of more than US$900 million (Bt28.48 billion) in 2019.

Tiger chases 16th major, No. 1 spot as PGA pratice begins

sports May 14, 2019 07:07

By AFP

Tiger Woods launched his quest for a 16th major title, and a possible return to world number one, with a PGA Championship practice round in cold and rainy conditions Monday.

The 43-year-old American, who snapped an 11-year major win drought by capturing last month’s Masters, toured the front nine at Bethpage Black in just under 2 1/2 hours ahead of Thursday’s start to the year’s second major tournament.

“I feel good,” Woods told Golfweek. “Got a couple more days of work to get in and I’ll be ready to go.”

Woods hopes to pull within two of the all-time record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus and take a fifth PGA crown, which would match the career record hauls of Nicklaus and Walter Hagen.

“To tie Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus with five wins would be a very special accomplishment,” Woods said.

With a victory, Woods would also match the all-time career US PGA wins record of 82 by Sam Snead.

Woods, whose career had been jeopardized by years of nagging back pain before 2017 spinal fusion surgery, won the 2002 US Open at Bethpage Black and shared sixth in the 2009 US Open, but those were in warmer mid-June conditions.

This marks the first PGA Championship since 1948 to be played in May after the event was shifted this year from its traditional August spot in golf’s lineup.

Woods practiced four times last week, including an 18-hole session at the Long Island public layout last Wednesday, two days after accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a White House ceremony.

The in-depth shotmaking session at Bethpage was the first time Woods had seen the facility since the 2012 US PGA Barclays tournament.

Sixth-ranked Woods is among five players with a chance to top next week’s rankings.

Top-ranked Dustin Johnson, defending champion Brooks Koepka, England’s second-ranked Justin Rose, four-time major winner Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Woods all have a chance at the top spot.

Johnson, Rose, third-ranked Koepka and fourth-rated McIlroy could take number one with a triumph while Woods would need to win, have neither Rose nor Koepka finish second alone and have Johnson finish worse than solo 11th place.

– Tiger oldest No. 1? –

Woods, who has not been world number one since March 2013, has spent a record 683 weeks atop the rankings.

Should he return to the top, Woods would become the oldest world number one, overtaking Australian legend Greg Norman for the distinction.

Las Vegas Westgate Superbook oddsmakers have Woods as a 10-1 co-favorite with Johnson and two-time US Open winner Koepka with four-time major champion Rory McIlroy just behind at 12-1.

Woods jumped 13th to sixth after winning the Masters but hasn’t played since his Masters triumph. This marks only the sixth time in his career Woods has played two majors without at least one event between them, the first time since the 2013 British Open.

Woods had fallen to 1,199th in the world rankings in December 2017 after spinal fusion surgery as a last-ditch move to ease nagging back pain that made simple movements difficult.

From there, Woods contended at last year’s British Open and PGA, won his first title in more than five years by taking the 2018 Tour Championship.

That set the stage for Woods to win his fifth Masters green jacket.

– Thomas withdraws –

Fifth-ranked Justin Thomas withdrew from the tournament with a right wrist injury, denying this from being the first major tournament with all of the world’s 100 top players in the field.

“As a past champion this tournament is extra special to me,” Thomas said in a statement. “It consistently has the strongest field in golf and I’m disappointed not to be among those competing this year but I’m optimistic about a return in the near future.”

Thai Cycling Association president Decha Hemkrasri expects his riders to seal qualification for next year’s Olympics at the 60th Anniversary Thai Cycling Association Tour of Trat from May 24 to 26.

Decha hopes the Kingdom’s female riders follow the example of Jutatip Maneephan, who reigned supreme in the Women’s Tour of Thailand in Chiang Mai last month.

2014 Asian Games road race gold medallist Chanpeng Nontasin, plus Phetdarin Somrat, Supaksorn Nuntana and Chaniporn Batriya make up the team that Decha hopes can secure a berth at Tokyo 2020.

“If our cyclists, especially Jutatip, win this tournament, they will definitely qualify for the 2020 Olympics. We expect her to repeat the same performance that propelled her to the win the Tour of Thailand,” said Decha, adding that the winner would also claim the prestigious trophy of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Around 104 athletes and officials from 10 countries (Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Russia, Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, Iran and South Korea) will participate in the two-stage race.

The 83.5km first stage on May 24 starts and ends at Trat City Hall and goes through Ban Laem Ngad while the 92.6km second stage, which also starts and ends at the Hall, runs past Ban Bor Rai district.

There will also be a special 94km race on May 26 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Thai Cycling Association – The Golden Era Celebration Tour of Trat will start and end at City Hall via Laem Ngop district.

Shin delighted with his return to form at the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup

Sentosa –  Korean-American Micah Lauren Shin was thrilled to rediscover his best form as he breaks into the top-10 on the latest Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings after capping a noteworthy joint runner-up finish at the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup on Sunday.

Shin, who claimed his Asian Tour breakthrough in 2017, had endured an uncharacteristic run of poor form prior to his fine showing at the Sobu Country Club in Japan. He missed the halfway cut twice and has never finish inside top-60 in five starts since the start of the season.

With his father on the bag last week, Shin found himself leading by two shots at the halfway stage after opening with rounds of 71 and 67 at the JPY150,000,000 (US$1,338,000) event, sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).

A pair of closing 72s, however, saw the 22-year-old Shin settle for a share of second place alongside local amateur Ren Yonezawa on two-under-par 282, just a shot behind Yosuke Asaji of Japan, who closed with a 72 to claim his first professional title.

Despite missing out on his second Tour victory, Shin took pride in his confidence-boosting finish which marked his best result since his victory in Manila in 2017 and propelled him to a career-high seventh place on the Merit rankings, thanks to a current haul of US$162,231.

“It’s disappointing to miss out on the win of course but I really tired my best to catch him (Asaji). I haven’t been playing well lately and I needed a result like this to boost my confidence,” said Shin, who has been based in Davao, Philippines with his father for more than half a decade.

“But I know I have the game to do well so hopefully, this is the start of better things to come,” added the young talent, who came through the Qualifying School in 2017 before going on to claim his breakthrough win at the Resorts World Manila Masters the same year.

Shin’s maiden win in the Philippines held extra significance as it came after the then 20-year-old called a ruling on himself on the opening hole of the final round and was penalised two strokes for having 15 clubs in the bag.

His two-year winner’s exemption ends this season but Shin has virtually retained his card for 2020 as he is likely to finish inside top-60 on the final Order of Merit following his tied-second finish in Japan.

Zimbabwean Scott Vincent recorded his second top-10 result this season after battling to a 72 to finish three shots back in tied-sixth place. He would move up a spot to eighth position on the money list, where Australian Scott Hend continues to lead on US$527,530.

Thailand’s rising star Jazz Janewattananond, who will be making his debut appearance at the PGA Championship this week, remains in second place with US$471,295 while Korea’s Taehee Lee took third on US$266,798.

Thaksin ‘aims at EPL return’

Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra is making efforts to buy Premier League side Crystal Palace, according to a report by local media.

Mitti Tiyapairat

Local media cites a source close to Thaksin as confirming he is in negotiations with the Eagles and that Chiangrai United president Mitti Tiyapairat is a possible candidate to represent him at the club. The deal is believed to be around 150 million pounds.

Mitti meanwhile said in an interview with local newspapers that he was not involved with the buying process but would be ready for a new challenge in life.

“I have no idea about the development of negotiation. However, it will be a challenge for me if I’m really picked to help manage the team. I’m a football lover and always follow football results everywhere. So it will be an hounour if I’m chosen,” said Mitti, adding that his priority is however to lead Chiang Rai to the local Thai League title.

Thaksin bought City in 2007 before selling the club to the Abu Dhabi United Group a year later.

Palace are managed by former England boss Roy Hodgson and finished a very respectable 12th in the table after being under a relegation cloud for much of the season.

Game on at Le Mans: who can steal the headlines in France?

Game on at Le Mans: who can steal the headlines in France?

sports May 13, 2019 18:06

By Agencies

Marquez, Rins, Dovizioso, Viñales, Rossi…or that fast rookie with the record-breaking pace? It’s home turf time for Quartararo.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) put on an impressive display on home turf in Jerez, riding for redemption after his crash out the lead at COTA and showing he’s certainly capable of sealing the deal in a dominant race. In doing so he also took back the Championship lead, and in terms of race wins and track records, Marquez has a solid CV at Le Mans – as is becoming true everywhere – and the reigning Champion will be gunning for his third premier class victory at the venue. But there’s one man who stole some of the headlines in Spain – as well as a few records – and now it’s his turn to race on home turf.

Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) has been an impressive rookie since he stepped up, but in Jerez he stepped it up even further. Breaking Marquez’ record as the youngest polesitter in MotoGP™ on Saturday, on Sunday he seemed on for a first ever premier class podium right behind the reigning Champion – before the heartbreak of a mechanical failure. So, on Monday, he smashed his new lap record in testing by half a second. The Frenchman is fast and his home crowd will be behind him every lap – at a track where Yamaha have often reigned.

One man hoping to leapfrog the Frenchman a little earlier in the race this time around is Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar). The Spaniard followed up his first MotoGP™ win at COTA with a second place behind Marquez, but Rins had fought through to it from ninth on the grid. Saturday form is the chink in his armour as it stands, and the Suzuki man says he’s unsure as to why. Can he unlock that one lap pace at Le Mans? Or will he be forced to slice through the pack again before unleashing his speed? Only one point off Marquez in the standings, Rins will be pulling out all the stops on Saturday to set himself up for an assault on a second win and the lead.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), meanwhile, missed the podium at Jerez by mere tenths and saw himself slip down to third in the standings. Last year at Le Mans he crashed, but it was out the lead – and it’s a track that’s been kinder to the Italian than Jerez. A Ducati has never won there, but with the increasing all-round form of the Borgo Panigale factory, is now the time? As Rins surges towards the front and the likes of Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) take points off him, the Italian will be refocused to attack in France.

And what of Viñales? After his first podium of the season the Spaniard could be a key threat, and he won at Le Mans in 2017 when he famously outpaced teammate Valentino Rossi and the ‘Doctor’ went down on the final lap. Rossi, too, could be one to watch despite a more difficult Jerez, having won there three times in the premier class and boasting the usual impressive record. And Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team) has an even better record there with five premier class wins. Was Spain a blip for them and France another fresh start?

Home hero Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) – on the podium in 2017 – and teammate Pol Espargaro will be hoping it is after a tougher Spanish Grand Prix than anticipated. But the Austrian factory are making huge gains to the front reading behind the positions, and the work never stops. Espargaro is also just ahead of brother Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) in the Championship too, and Noale factory Aprilia are only a point ahead of KTM in the standings so there’s plenty at stake.

That’s true of the fight to be top Independent Team rider too. Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) has now been equaled on points by Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu), and his teammate Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) – a podium finisher at Le Mans – is only two points back. Will the Quartararo show start to pick up traction and threaten them as well as the Rookie of the Year crown? Or can the veterans start to claw back some ground…

The Shark Helmets Grand Prix de France fires up at Le Mans from the 17th to 19th May and it’s poised to be pivotal. Can Marquez extend his lead and take Honda’s 300th premier class win? Is Rins’ race day reputation set to roll on? Will Yamaha be resurgent once again? Can ‘DesmoDovi’ unleash the Desmosedici and take Ducati’s first win at the venue? Or will Quartararo steal the headlines again…

Don’t miss the MotoGP™ race at 14:00 local time (GMT +2) on Sunday.

Championship standings1 – Marc Marquez (SPA – Honda) – 70

2 – Alex Rins (SPA – Suzuki) – 69

3 – Andrea Dovizioso (ITA – Ducati) – 67

4 – Valentino Rossi (ITA – Yamaha) – 61

5 – Danilo Petrucci (ITA – Ducati) – 41

Can Lüthi capitalise at Le Mans? The Swiss rider has done it once this season in style. Can he do it again, or will Baldassarri flip the form book in France?Ahead of COTA, the stats said Championship leader Lorenzo Baldassarri (Flexbox HP40) could be facing an uphill struggle and that’s exactly how it played out on race day: the number 07 crashed out and key rival Tom Lüthi (Dynavolt Intact GP) emerged victorious. Since then, Baldassarri has returned to the top step in Jerez with another dominant showing and extended his lead, but he’d reigned in Spain last year and the back-to-back wins came as no surprise despite a tough start to the weekend. Now, as we head into the Shark Helmets Grand Prix de France, the form book says it could be another uphill for the Italian and a big chance for the Swiss rider to fight back, for Le Mans is more than a track where the Italian has struggled; it’s also a track where Lüthi has shone.

Four wins – two in the 125 World Championship and two in Moto2™ – added to two more podiums in the intermediate class make the Swiss rider an immediate favourite. It would also be perfect timing to hit back so soon and he’s on good form this season so far. Will that be enough? Or can Baldassarri show it’s nothing to do with track records and flip the form book?

Behind the two at the top of the standings, Marcel Schrötter (Dynavolt Intact GP) in third is one hoping this season is a clean slate at the circuit, along with Jerez and COTA podium finisher Jorge Navarro (Lightech Speed Up). Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team), meanwhile, will want to bounce back from his Jerez crash that also took out Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) – a man with podium form in France who will also be eager to get back near the front after having been denied the chance on home turf.

Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2), meanwhile, says the Jerez test was a problem solver and is another one with a previous top five finish in France, and Dominique Aegerter (MV Agusta Idealavoro Forward) has a solid record at the track – and has now scored points for new Moto2™ manufacturer MV Agusta  twice. It could be another solid venue to keep that record rolling. Finally, one of the biggest questions comes courtesy of another newer chassis on the grid: what can KTM do at Le Mans? After a test that saw plenty of new hardware on show from the Austrian factory – and that after a top five for Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) in Spain – the mutterings were positive as they seemed to find some answers for the issues they’d experienced in the heat of Jerez. Le Mans, as well as coming after some testing time, could well be markedly cooler temperatures too.

Moto2™ is serving up some classics so far in 2019. France is shaping up to be another – make sure to tune in on the 19th May for the Shark Helmets Grand Prix de France.

Championship standings1 – Lorenzo Baldassarri (ITA – Kalex) – 75

2 – Tom Lüthi (SWI – Kalex) – 58

3 – Marcel Schrötter (GER – Kalex) – 48

4 – Jorge Navarro (SPA – Speed Up) – 44

5 – Remy Gardner (AUS – Kalex) – 38

Moto3™ prepare to face down in FranceIt’s an unpredictable year so far in the lightweight class – will that change at Le Mans?Veteran he may be, but the signs didn’t seem to be pointing to a Niccolo Antonelli victory in Jerez before we arrived – nor to a SIC58 Squadra Corse 1-2. Nevertheless, that’s what happened and Moto3™ got another shake up in the standings, as well as making some emotional history as SIC58 Squadra Corse took their first win 15 years after the late Marco Simoncelli’s first Grand Prix victory. So as we head for Le Mans in the wake of another surprise race winner then, do track records even matter in 2019?

Antonelli will likely be one of the riders hoping so, despite just winning at a track where he’d not always had the most success. Le Mans sees the Italian boast one of the best records, with three top five finishes including last year, and that bodes well as he aims to outgun Championship leader Aron Canet (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team). Canet, whom he trails by a single point, has a podium, a fourth place and a top ten to his name in France for his part though, so there’s not much in it – like in the standings.

There is, however, one rider who has previously won at Le Mans: Romano Fenati (VNE Snipers Team). But as the rounds roll on and that statistic keeps showing up, the Italian’s season so far remains a difficult one. In Jerez he ran on avoiding Ramirez’ crash through no fault of his own, so can he turn it around at Le Mans, where he has a win from 2015 and a podium from 2016?

A few more veterans to look out for could be Marcos Ramirez (Leopard Racing), Andrea Migno (Bester Capital Dubai) and Jakub Kornfeil (Redox PrüstelGP). On two previous appearances at Le Mans Ramirez has taken a fourth place and a podium, meanwhile Migno and Kornfeil are consistent presences in the top ten in recent years in France – and Migno was on the podium last season. That’s not forgetting last year’s winner Albert Arenas (Bester Capital Dubai), who impressed on his return from injury in Jerez as he took fifth.

There are some riders whose 2019 form can’t be ignored, too: Jaume Masia (Bester Capital Dubai) needs to bounce back, Kaito Toba (Honda Team Asia) shows no sign of disappearing from the fight at the front and Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Leopard Racing) will have a bittersweet aftertaste from Jerez after taking pole then dropping down to eighth.

Track records, building confidence, quick-shifting fortunes and just pure skill are all key ingredients in Moto3™. Who will find the best recipe for success at Le Mans? Find out in the Shark Helmets Grand Prix de France on the 19th May.

Dallas – A hot putter helped Thai golf star Kiradech Aphibarnrat produce his third top-five finish of the season at the AT&T Byron Nelson on Sunday.

After laying off from the game for three weeks to rest an injured right knee, the big-hitting Kiradech brilliantly closed with his season’s lowest round of 7-under 64 at Trinity Forest Golf Club to finish T5 on the PGA TOUR.

His 17-under 267 aggregate, which was also his best total score all year, moved him up to 61st position on the latest FedExCup points list and should bump him up by a few rungs from his present 18th position on the International Team rankings for the Presidents Cup against the United States at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Australia later this year.

Kiradech, the first Thai to hold a PGA TOUR card, led the Strokes Gained: Putting stats category during a weather-disrupted week where he sank seven birdies in the final round without dropping a bogey.

“I’m rolling the ball quite well this week. If you look at the stats, I was very consistent and I had good speed and rolled the ball on line,” said a delighted Kiradech, whose previous two top-5s were at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China and WGC-Mexico Championship.

The Thai finished six shots behind winner Sung Kang, who became the 10th Korean-born player to win on the PGA TOUR following his two-shot victory. Kang’s triumph came three weeks after Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan won the RBC Heritage.

Kiradech’s high finish following his short break to nurse a sprained knee suffered at the Masters Tournament has set him up nicely ahead of the year’s second major, the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black this week.

The jovial Thai said he kept his expectations low as he didn’t know what to expect after  taking time off from the game. “This week, I just came out to enjoy the game, get a feel of the ball,” he said.

“I’m quite surprised with the result as I had three weeks off without hitting a golf ball. When you play with freedom, it helps. Sometimes you don’t know what will happen after you don’t hit the ball for a while.

“I kept seeing the ball roll on line and I could imagine the speed. Keep doing what I’m doing right now and hopefully it will carry on next week,” added Kiradech.

This week’s appearance at the PGA Championship will be his sixth, with a T25 in 2013 being his best result. Kiradech finished T49 at the Masters last month.

Four more allowed virtual banking in Hong Kong

TENCENT Holdings and Alibaba Group Holdings affiliate Ant Finance Services Group have received virtual banking licences in Hong Kong.

The move comes after the pair failed to make the first batch of licensees.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) said it has granted virtual banking licenses to four new entities: Ant SME Services (Hong Kong), Ping An OneConnect, Infinium and Insight Fintech HK.

Ant SME is a unit of Ant Financial, while Ping An OneConnect is a member of Ping An Insurance Group, the country’s second-largest insurer in terms of premiums.

Infinium is a joint venture backed by Tencent, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (Asia), Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing, Hillhouse Capital, and Hong Kong businessman Adrian Cheng.

Insight Fintech is a joint business between Chinese mainland smartphone maker Xiaomi and Hong Kong-based asset management company AMTD.

“Ant Financial has long been committed to bringing equal opportunities to consumers and small and medium-sized enterprises with its technological expertise.

“We are looking forward to joining hands with communities in Hong Kong to pave the way for the development of financial technology and inclusive finance in the city,” Ant Financial said in a statement.

The four newly licensed virtual banks are scheduled to offer services within six-to-nine months, the city’s de facto central bank said in the statement. This brings the total number of virtual lenders in Hong Kong to eight.

Buoyed by the news Tencent’s shares soared more than three per cent to peak at HK$387.8 in the morning session. Its share price closed Friday’s trading at HK$380.40, up 1.28 per cent.

The flagship Hang Seng Index edged up 0.84 per cent, or 239.17 points, to finish at 28,550.24 points.

It is thought that the granting of the virtual banking licences will make the financial centre a battlefield for the Chinese mainland’s ambitious financial technology firms.

Back in March, JD.com’s tech arm JD Digits and ZhongAn Online P&C Insurance were among the first licensees.

For the past couple of months, HKMA has not granted new banking licences.

Compared with the potential HK$20-40 billion cost of acquiring a bank licence in the city, the minimum capital threshold of HK$300 million for virtual lenders has lowered the bar for financial technology players to join the game.
