The motorcycles come with removable batteries that can be plugged into an electric socket for charging and “take only 2-3 hours to fully charge. They can cover a distance of 80-90 kilometres on a full charge”.

The launch event was joined by Toni Rakkaen and Baifern – Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul – together with motorcycle expert and motorsport event emcee John Rider – Ariyapong Charoensuk.

Swag EV rolled out two flagship models – the Type-X and the Type-S. The 2000W brushless hub-motors were developed by Bosch, a leader in automobile technology from Germany, and delivers impressive acceleration, the company said.

The motorcycles also come with a detachable 60-volt 26 AH battery from Samsung.

“Swag electric motorcycles are equipped with high-performance lithium-ion batteries, as well as other modern technologies developed for lightweight yet powerful electric motorcycles. Both models are now available at Swag EV’s showroom on the 2nd floor of Siam Square One. The Type-S model is priced at Bt62,900, while the Type-X costs Bt65,900,” the firm added.

“The future of electric mobility is here and we are honoured to officially launch our products and services in Thailand,” executive director Janson Chen said. “Swag EV was created on the idea of wanting to bring smarter, better mobility to urban life without the consequences of damaging the environment. We are not just a motorcycle manufacturer: our main focus lies on cutting edge IoT technologies and creative branding collaboration with designers and celebrities. We strongly believe the EV industry is growing rapidly in Southeast Asia and we wish to position ourselves among one of the most important players,” he added.

Said motorcycle expert Ariyapong: “I always use a motorcycle because it is convenient and it’s faster in traffic. I love the specifications of Swag EV because they use Bosch motors, while the very important battery is made by Samsung. The prices are also very reasonable, and the motorcycles are registered, so I think they are very interesting choices.”

Swag EV was founded in Singapore.

Home prices in 20- U.S. cities post largest gain in nine months

Jan 29. 2020
By Syndication Washington Post, Bloomberg · Vince Golle · NATIONAL, BUSINESS

Home prices in 20 U.S. cities rose in November at the fastest pace in nine months against a backdrop of stronger demand and lean housing inventory.

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller index of property values increased 2.6% from the same month the previous year, data released Tuesday showed. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a 2.4% annual advance. Home prices climbed 0.5% from the previous month – also topping forecasts – matching the October increase for the best back-to-back gains since early 2018.

– – –

– Further home-price appreciation is likely amid stronger sales and a limited number of available properties. Demand strengthened in the second half of 2019 as a drop in mortgage rates and faster income growth led to improved affordability.

– All 20 cities in the index showed year-over-year home-price gains, led by Phoenix; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Tampa, Florida. A broader national index of home prices was up 3.5% from a year earlier, the most since April.

– The figures follow recently released data showing firmer sales and limited supply. Purchases of previously owned homes rose in December to the strongest pace in almost two years, while the number of properties for sale dropped to an all-time low. Despite easing in December, the average sales pace of new homes in the fourth quarter was the fastest of the expansion.

– – –

– Prices increased from the previous month in all 20 cities, led by Charlotte, Boston and Seattle.

– The FHFA — which derives its data from mortgages that conform to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac limits — reported that prices in November rose 4.9% from a year earlier, marking a slowdown from the previous month.

South Korea’s health authorities said Wednesday that they have not diagnosed any additional cases of the new coronavirus in the country but are monitoring 15 other potential cases amid heightened quarantine rules.

So far, the country has confirmed four cases of the novel virus, with the latest one reported on Monday.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), 112 people experienced signs of the new virus strain, and 97 have tested negative and been released from observation and isolation.

The agency will provide more details about ongoing tests on suspected cases later in the day.

Of the four confirmed cases, the first was reported on Jan. 20, with the others coming on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Authorities said they are also keeping close tabs on people who may have come in contact with those infected.

Of the four cases, the third and fourth patients were asymptomatic upon arrival here from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the fast-spreading virus, raising concerns that they may have spread it to others unknowingly.

Common symptoms of the coronavirus, thought to have originated in Wuhan, central China, include fever, sore throat and breathing difficulties, with more acute cases involving chills and muscle pain.

South Korea has already raised the country’s infectious disease alert level one notch from “yellow” to “orange,” the third highest.

The whole of China has been categorized as a “coronavirus risk area,” and Seoul has strongly advised its citizens not to visit the central Chinese city.

Airports across South Korea have set up checkpoints to screen passengers from China and other countries for signs of illness, with local authorities accelerating quarantine efforts to contain the virus as people return from visiting relatives and from foreign travels.

China had confirmed 5,974 people infected with the virus as of early Wednesday.

The total number of infected cases worldwide has reached 6,052.

Outside China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, Macao, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Australia, Canada and the United States have reported confirmed cases of the new virus. (Yonhap)

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has confirmed three more cases of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), bringing the total number of such cases in Malaysia to seven.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that two out of the three new cases were from amongst the Patient-Under-Investigation (PUI) group.

Meanwhile, one case was from close contact with infected patients.

“All of the (seven) positive 2019-nCoV cases are Chinese nationals,” he said in a statement early Wednesday (Jan 29).

The two PUI cases involved a four-year-old girl currently being treated at an isolation ward at the Hospital Sultanah Maliha in Langkawi and a man, 52, who is receiving treatment at the isolation ward of Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Baru.

In the close contact case, Dr Noor Hisham said it involved the daughter-in-law of the man who was the first 2019-nCoV positive case in Singapore.

“The woman whose status was previously negative decided to stay in Malaysia to look after her two children who are being treated at the Hospital Sungai Buloh isolation ward after they tested positive,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

From Jan 10 to Jan 28, the cumulative number of PUI cases for 2019-nCoV stood at 78 people, whereby 39 are Malaysians, 36 Chinese, and one each from Jordan, Brazil and Thailand.

From this PUI group, three cases were confirmed to be positive 2019-nCoV, 74 negative and one case still awaiting lab results.

As reported previously, Dr Noor Hisham said 25 people who were close contacts with the positive 2019-nCoV cases in Singapore and Johor had been identified.

From this, the four of them who were confirmed to be infected with 2019-nCoV are being treated at the isolation ward of Hospital Sungai Buloh and are in stable condition.

Meanwhile, lab tests on the other 21 close contacts found them to be 2019-nCoV negative and the individuals were released from quarantine.

The 2019-nCoV, which originated from Wuhan, China has so far claimed 107 lives there and infected over 4,000 people in more than 15 countries.

SINGAPORE – Two new cases of Wuhan virus have been confirmed in Singapore, bringing the total number of infected people here to seven, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday (Jan 28).

With three confirmed cases within the last 24 hours, the trend of infection among Chinese nationals from Wuhan’s Hubei province in Singapore is accelerating, in line with the sharp increase in global infection rates, said the ministry.

This presents a heightened risk to Singapore, although there is as yet no evidence that the virus has spread in the community.

So new restrictions will include no entry or transit for travellers with passports issued in Hubei or those who have travelled there recently.

In addition, there are about 2,000 recent travellers from Hubei who are in Singapore, and those assessed to be of higher risk and with a recent travel history to Hubei will be quarantined.

Quarantine orders have legal force, with severe penalties for non-compliance, including possible jail time.

Announcing enhanced measures on Tuesday, the authorities said that they apply to three groups: recent travellers from Hubei already in Singapore; returning residents of Singapore or long-term pass holders with travel history to Hubei or with China passports issued in Hubei, and new visitors with a travel history to Hubei or China passports issued in Hubei.

Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, is the capital city of Hubei province.

For the first group – recent travellers from Hubei already in Singapore – the ministry has started contacting individuals with Hubei travel history and China nationals with Hubei passports.

There are an estimated 2,000 such individuals here, about 1,000 are on short-term visit passes. Half are visitors and half are residents.

Those assessed to be at higher risk will be quarantined.

For the second group – returning residents and long-term pass holders with travel history to Hubei or with China passports issued in Hubei – they will be quarantined on their return.

And from noon on Wednesday (Jan 29), there will be no entry or transit through Singapore for all new visitors with recent Hubei travel history within the last 14 days, or holders of China passports issued in Hubei – the third group in question.

With immediate effect, those with China passports issued in Hubei will have a suspension of issuance of all forms of new visas, previously issued short-term visit passes and multiple-visit visas, and visa-free transit facility.

Like the previous five cases, the two new patients are from Wuhan.

One is a 56-year-old Chinese national, who arrived in Singapore on Jan 19.

He developed a cough on Jan 25, and went to Changi General Hospital on Sunday.

Starbucks closes half its China stores during virus outbreak

Jan 29. 2020
By Syndication Washington Post, Bloomberg · Leslie Patton · BUSINESS, WORLD, ASIA-PACIFIC

Starbucks Corp. has closed more than 2,000 locations in mainland China because of a viral outbreak that has killed more than 100 people and disrupted daily life in the coffee chain’s most important growth market.

The news cast gloom over what otherwise would have been an upbeat earnings report. Same-store sales, an important gauge of success for restaurant chains, rose 5% in the fiscal first quarter that ended Dec. 29, outpacing the 4.6% average estimate compiled by Consensus Metrix.

The company maintained its 2020 forecast but said it doesn’t include the impact of temporarily closing so many stores because it can’t yet calculate it.

“We will be transparent with all stakeholders in communicating how we are responding to these extraordinary circumstances and the implications for our near-term business results,” Chief Executive Officer Kevin Johnson said in a statement. He also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to China.

On a call with analysts, Johnson said Starbucks had planned to raise its financial projections for the year, but changed course as measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus intensified.

Starbucks shares reversed an initial gain in late trading, falling as much 1.4% to $87.40 as of 4:57 p.m in New York. The stock has been mostly flat in 2020 after jumping almost 37% last year.

McDonald’s Corp. and Yum China Holdings Inc., which operates Pizza Hut and KFC in the country, have also announced restaurant closures in areas near the center of the outbreak. Starbucks, however, appears to be carrying out a broader suspension of activities than its counterparts.

China and the U.S. are the most important markets for Starbucks as the Seattle-based chain seeks to recapture its rapid growth of past years. The results show the strategy is paying off — with higher customer traffic in the two nations particularly encouraging.

The coronavirus, of course, will be the wild card in whether Starbucks can maintain its pace. The company is expanding aggressively there, with global store growth of 6% in the quarter led by China, where the chain has more than 4,000 locations. Starbucks said it couldn’t “reasonably” estimate the impact of the coronavirus, but expects the outbreak to “materially affect” fiscal second-quarter and full-year results.

Operating margin expanded in the quarter to 17.2%, compared with 15.3% a year ago. While higher sales and supply-chain savings helped, the company is still facing higher wage and employee benefits costs.

Britain to allow some Huawei equipment in 5G networks, resisting U.S. pressure #ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย

Britain to allow some Huawei equipment in 5G networks, resisting U.S. pressure

Jan 29. 2020
By The Washington Post · William Booth, Jeanne Whalen, Ellen Nakashima

LONDON – The British government on Tuesday handed the U.S. government a major defeat in its months-long campaign against the Chinese tech giant Huawei by agreeing to use Huawei equipment in part of its telecommunications network.

The decision marked a rare split between the transatlantic allies and a blow to Washington as it battles China for dominance over the installation of the new communications technology known as 5G.

The United States has put Huawei at the forefront of that battle, arguing that installing the company’s telecommunications equipment would leave allied countries vulnerable to Chinese espionage.

China critics in the United States quickly panned the announcement and warned that sit could damage U.S.-U.K. trade relations.

“This decision has the potential to jeopardize US-UK intelligence sharing agreements and could greatly complicate a US-UK free trade agreement,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in a tweet. “I hope the British government will reconsider its decision.”

“America has never been weaker,” said Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. “We have never had less influence. Not even our closest ally, Britain, with a Trump soulmate in Downing Street, listens to us anymore.”

British officials portrayed those reactions as overwrought. They noted that the decision limits Huawei’s market share of Britain’s “non-core” 5G network to 35%, labels it a “high risk” vendor and bars the use of its equipment in “core” parts of the network, including intelligence, military and nuclear sites.

“We have looked at the issue of how to maintain network security and resilience over many months and in great technical detail,” Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said. “We would never take decisions that threaten our national security or the security of our Five Eyes partners,” a reference to the intelligence sharing consortium that includes Britain, the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Other British government officials scoffed at suggestions that Washington might reduce intelligence-sharing with its key ally because of security concerns with Huawei in the 5G network.

“There is absolutely no reason” for the United States to lessen intelligence-sharing “because this [decision] upholds the security of our 5G network,” said one who requested anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, adding that intelligence is exchanged on separate, highly secure systems. “So there is absolutely no reason why intelligence-sharing should be called into question by this decision.”

Still, the British decision shows the challenges the Trump administration faces as it asks countries to pick a side in the battle over Huawei. Germany, Brazil and other nations are still deciding how and whether to use Huawei equipment in the super-fast 5G wireless networks they are building.

“I worry the U.K. decision could potentially be a preview of other decisions around the world,” said Kelly Magsamen, a former Pentagon official who also served on the National Security Council during the Obama and George W. Bush administrations.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., a former communications executive, suggested in a statement that the decision shows the need for the U.S. and its allies to work together “to build more diverse and secure telecommunication options.”

Huawei is the world’s leading provider of 5G equipment. The other major providers are Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson. There are no major U.S.-based providers.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired the meeting of Britain’s National Security Council, where the plan was approved. The British government will now seek to legislate the proposals through Parliament. It is possible that the House of Commons could amend Johnson’s plan – loosening or strengthening Huawei’s hand. But after a landslide win in last month’s general election for Johnson and his Conservative Party, the government can count on parliamentary approval for most of its proposals.

Huawei, which has dismissed U.S. security concerns as unfounded, described Britain’s announcement Tuesday as a win.

“This evidence-based decision will result in a more advanced, more secure and more cost-effective telecoms infrastructure that is fit for the future. It gives the U.K. access to world-leading technology and ensures a competitive market,” Huawei Vice President Victor Zhang said in a statement.

In a telephone call after the decision was announced, Trump and Johnson “underlined the importance of like-minded countries working together to diversify the market and break the dominance of a small number of companies,” a Downing Street spokesman said via email.

The U.K. decision follows months of pressure from U.S. officials. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted Sunday that Britain had a “momentous decision ahead on 5G.” On Friday, Trump called Johnson to talk about Huawei.

And in meetings in London this month, top national-security and State Department officials warned that the U.S. would have to reassess whether Britain could sufficiently protect shared intelligence if it let Huawei into its 5G network. The British press quoted the officials saying that using Huawei gear would be “nothing short of madness.”

Major U.K. telecommunications companies such as British Telecom already use Huawei gear in their 3G and 4G networks, and Britain does not want to fall behind in the 5G world.

“The British public deserve to have access to the best possible technology,” Johnson said in a BBC interview earlier this month. “On the other hand, let’s be clear. I don’t want, as the U.K. prime minister, to put in any infrastructure that is going to prejudice our national security or our ability to cooperate with Five Eyes intelligence partners.”

Foreign minister Raab said the lack of a wide choice of providers played a part in the decision. “Currently, the U.K. faces a choice of only three major players to supply key parts of our telecoms networks,” he said. “It is a market failure that must be addressed,” he said, adding that the U.K. planned to support new technology that could help diversify the market.

“It is essential that we are never again in a position of having such limited choices when deploying such important new technologies,” Raab said.

The coming super-fast 5G networks are expected to power the “Internet of things,” enabling industrial, transport and everyday devices to be connected, to “talk” to one another and to share data constantly, powering future technologies such as driverless cars and smart household appliances.

The U.S. has taken several steps to try to isolate Huawei. Last year it banned the sale of some U.S. technology to Huawei. It has also blocked the Chinese company from installing telecom equipment in the United States.

Japan and Australia effectively also have banned Huawei from their 5G networks.
