Thailand urged to roll out antibody treatment as Covid hospitalisation surges

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2022

A top virologist has urged the Public Health Ministry to roll out long-acting antibody (LAAB) treatment to protect people vulnerable to Covid-19 as infection levels surge.

The Department of Disease Control reports that hospital beds occupied by Covid patients have jumped from 5% last month to 8.5% this month.

Writing on Facebook, Dr Yong Poovorawan said LAAB treatments such as AstraZeneca’s Evushield should be administered to at-risk groups to protect against the Omicron BA.2.75 driving Thailand’s latest Covid-19 wave.

He added that LAAB could be used prevent serious infection and death among people who cannot be fully vaccinated due to health conditions including cancer and kidney disease.

Dr Yong, who heads Chulalongkorn University’s Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology, said the Public Health Ministry has sufficient stocks of LAAB to treat patients.

“People vulnerable to Covid-19 infection should receive antibodies to reduce their risk of developing severe symptoms and death,” he said.

He added that these stocks should be used immediately to reduce health impacts of Covid-19 as their efficiency would drop as the virus mutates further.

K-pop heartthrob Jin kicks off 18 months of mandatory military service

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2022

BTS member Kim Seok-jin, who is better known as Jin, began his military service on Tuesday in one of South Korea’s northernmost military bases.

The K-pop heartthrob posted a picture of himself with a buzz cut on the fan-community platform Weverse on Monday with the caption: “It looks cuter than I thought.”

According to the South Korean military, Jin will start his service at the boot camp of the 5th Infantry Division in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province.

He will be joining 200 other new cadets and after five weeks of training, he will be placed in the military unit.

Born in 1992, Jin is the oldest among BTS members and will be the first to serve in the military.

He enlisted in the military even though the 2020 amendment to the Military Service Act would have allowed him to postpone it to the end of the year.

The South Korean National Assembly revised the law in December 2020 in recognition of BTS’s global success, allowing them to postpone their conscription until they turned 30.

Military duty is compulsory for all able-bodied men in South Korea between the ages of 18 and 28.

Big Hit Music, the agency behind the K-pop mega group, announced that no official events will be held to commemorate Jin’s admission day. The agency urged fans and media outlets to avoid visiting the boot camp to prevent any cases of emergency.

The agency also said that Jin will drive to the boot camp without a farewell party.

“For safety management, the Army and related ministries will be operating an all-source situation room and there will be ambulances ready for any emergencies. We will make sure there are no safety loopholes at the scene,” an army officer said during a regular briefing on Monday.

Jin’s six other bandmates – RM, Suga, Jimin, J-hope, V and Jungkook – will be enlisting in that order, BigHit Music said.

BTS has been on a hiatus from group activities since June this year, so members can take a break and focus on solo careers.

Jin released a solo single called “The Astronaut” on October 28 and entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart on November 12 at No 51.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2022

Thai football star Chanathip “Messi Jay” Songkrasin says he is rooting for the player he was named after to win the 2022 World Cup.

Leo Messi’s Argentina beat Croatia 3-0 in their semi-final match in the early hours of Wednesday (Thai time) to book their place in Sunday’s final.

Messi gave a footballing masterclass against Croatia, scoring a penalty for his fifth goal of the tournament, which puts him level with France’s Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot race.

He also mesmerised defender Josko Gvardiol before providing the pass that Julian Alvarez converted for Argentina’s second goal.

Messi and Argentina must now beat the winner of tonight’s match between France and Morocco to secure their third World Cup.

The build-up to Tuesday night’s match saw Chanathip – whose skills and short stature earned him the comparison with the world’s top footballer – join fellow Thai footballing greats Teeratep Winothai and Pongpisut Pue-On under the “Honda Click Series” media spotlight.

Chanathip said he was cheering for Argentina in this World Cup because of their captain Messi.

“I am rooting for Lionel Messi. I want Argentina to become the champions. Anything can happen in football, but I want Messi to win the World Cup.”

Chanathip also revealed he would not join the Thailand national team when they defend their Asean (AFF) Championship title from December 20 to January 16.

He explained he needed time for his body to recover for the Japanese league season, adding the team was still strong without him.

“I am currently resting my body to be fully fit for the upcoming J League season with my club [Kawasaki Frontale],” he said.

Chanathip became the first Thai to play in Japan’s top league back in 2017.

“I hope the next season will be my great year and [I] do not get injured,” he added.

Chanathip is in Thailand for a short holiday before returning for training with Kawasaki Frontale, who were runners-up in the league last season, on January 10.

Two goals by swashbuckling striker Julian Alvarez and a Lionel Messi penalty gave Argentina a 3-0 victory over 2018 runners-up Croatia in the first World Cup semi-final on Tuesday (December 13) to set up a showpiece meeting with France or Morocco on Sunday.

Messi put Argentina ahead with a 34th-minute penalty after goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic tripped Alvarez as he chased a simple long ball and the Manchester City forward then charged 50 metres, somehow keeping possession via two rebounds as defenders tried to tackle him, to poke in the second five minutes later.

Croatia, who came from behind to beat Japan and Brazil on penalties in the last two rounds, tried to hit back in the second half but their neat passing failed to open any real cracks in a determined Argentine defence.

Messi then burst into life, showing mesmerising control to drive to the byline and pull the ball back for Alvarez to tuck in the third after 69 minutes and wrap up the victory.

Online platform stands up for ‘ugly veggies’

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2022

Stephanie Adair

When shopping for vegetables in your supermarket, how often do you reach for a misshapen bunch of carrots or weirdly shaped tomatoes? It would not be the first choice for many, despite knowing that the nutritional value was probably not different from the more attractive veggies on the shelves.

At Isan BSG Expo 2022, the online platform “Ugly Veggies” has set up its booth with a mission to find space for these vegetables for customers who understand the ugly vegetable concept while also wanting affordable organic veggies in their diet.

We spoke to Asst Prof Chavis Ketkaew, Associate Dean for Strategy, Research, and International Affairs International College, Khon Kaen University, on this project.

“We work closely with farmers in the Eastern region, especially in Khon Kaen, so we often visited farms in the Kranuan district in Khon Kaen province and this district has some farmers who work closely with the Smart Farming system of Khon Kaen University, so we supported them. But when I went to interview and observe what they were doing, I found that around 30% of organic vegetables are fully utilised and sent to premium supermarkets in Thailand.

“However, there’s about 70% that are considered waste. So we’re trying to think of ways to utilise this 70% of vegetables. And we found that the market price of waste-grade vegetables is really low and there is some room to hike the price and benefit farmers.”

He added that the aim is change consumers’ perception about ugly vegetables and make them realise that they can still receive full nutrition at cheaper prices.

“And with this, we’re trying to create a digital platform to gather farmers and build a network of those who produce organic vegetables. We started with only seven households and we’re trying to expand into more and more households in the future.”

“Ugly Veggie” is a platform that matches consumers with the need to buy organic vegetables at a cheaper price with the farmers who would like to sell it to them.

“So, in our role as a platform, we’re trying to build a brand and trying to make consumers realise that ugly vegetables still have nutritive value. We are trying to expand the network of farmers as well, to join this platform. We plan to start first with areas in Khon Kaen province to try this business model and, right now we are in the testing phase of the platform.”

Ugly Veggie works with food scientists from the Faculty of Technology and International College of Khon Kaen University to ensure the quality of the products in terms of sensory perception, such as the way the vegetables look, taste and smell.

Lower-grade vegetables that are inedible are transformed into products like baked goods or jam and sold back into the platform.

Ugly Veggies will officially launch at the beginning of January 2023 and there are plans to expand to other regions as well.
