Adidas reveals ‘Al Hilm’, the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Finals

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2022

Bangkok, 11 December 2022 – Today, adidas reveals Al Hilm – the Official Match Ball for the semifinals and final of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Al Hilm, which translates as “The Dream” in Arabic, follows on from the Official Match Ball of the group stages, Al Rihla, which translates as “The Journey”.

Both balls feature the same technology, engineered to support the highest game speeds as they travel faster in flight than any other World Cup ball. Al Hilm is revealed with a unique graphic design, befitting of an occasion as historic as the final matches of a FIFA World Cup™.

The design is set on a textured gold base color which features a subtle triangular pattern, drawing inspiration from the sparkling deserts of the region that surround the city, the color of the FIFA World Cup™ trophy, and the pattern of the Qatar flag. Bold red accents complement the graphic, reflecting both the generative architecture of Qatar, and once again, the country’s flag.

The ball encapsulates its namesake, Al Hilm – “The Dream”, as it connects to the twilight hours, where the red sky meets the desert sand at dusk – a time when dreams are set to come true under the floodlights of the Lusail Stadium – the stage for the Final.

“Al Hilm represents a beacon of light on the power of sport and football to bring the world together. Millions will tune in from almost every country around the globe, united by their passion for the game. We wish all teams involved in the final stages of the tournament the best of luck as they compete on the largest stage that football has to offer” said Nick Craggs, General Manager – Football, adidas.

Designed from the inside out using data from rigorous testing in adidas labs, wind tunnels, and on-pitch, Al Hilm features the same new panel shape and surface textures introduced for Al Rihla:

  • CTR-CORE – An innovative core within the ball that is tuned to support fast, precise play with maximum shape and air retention
  • SPEEDSHELL – The ball’s polyurethane (PU) skin featuring micro and macro textures and a 20-piece panel shape

Utilizing the latest technological advances in ball design, Al Hilm includes the same unprecedented adidas ‘Connected Ball’ technology as Al Rihla, which has proven invaluable in helping match officials making faster and more accurate decisions during this World Cup.

Combined with player position data, the innovation offers Video Assistant Referees instant data, to help optimize decision making for a seamless fan experience. By combining the ball tracking data captured by sensors within the ball and applying artificial intelligence, the new technology provides an automated offside alert to the VAR team.

The ball was also designed with the environment at its heart – all components have been carefully considered, and Al Hilm is the first World Cup semifinals and final ball made using only water-based inks and glues.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

The “Lu Ko Pa Tor” viewpoint in Tak’s Umphang district has recently become a new winter hotspot for tourists thanks to its sea of fog that lasts late into the morning.

Thiti Chartsakulsri, the headman of Ban Palatha village which is about 7 kilometres from the viewpoint, said the sea of mist takes longer to dissipate because it has become quite cold in the mornings.

He added that some tourists discovered this spot last year and it has become very popular since.

The viewpoint is about 32 kilometres from Umphang’s main town.

Japanese survey: 26% of municipalities have no bookstores

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

Of the 1,741 municipalities in Japan, 456, or 26.2%, have no bookstore at all, according to a survey by the Japan Publishing Industry Foundation for Culture (JPIC).

When one includes municipalities that only have one bookstore, the number rises to 790, or more than 40% of all municipalities. With book sales continuing to fare poorly, bookstores have been disappearing from streets across the country, a serious situation that could rob people of places to interact with books.

The survey was conducted by gathering September data from the Tokyo-based Japan Publishing Organization for Information Infrastructure Development (JPO), which comprises publishers, publication wholesalers and bookstore industry associations. Rural areas in particular stood out for their lack of bookstores, with 56.1% of municipalities having no bookstores in Okinawa Prefecture, 51.9% in Nagano Prefecture and 51.3% in Nara Prefecture. In Hokkaido, 70.9% of municipalities have one or no bookstores.

A number of bookstores have closed down in recent years due to sluggish sales of physical books and magazines and the rise of online bookstores, among other reasons. According to the JPO, there were 16,722 bookstores across the nation in 2011, including those specializing in textbooks and providing other services to schools, government agencies and companies, while the number declined nearly 30% to 11,952 in 2021. The number of small- and medium-size bookstores appears to have suffered a particularly steep decline.

“Most bookstores will disappear in the next 10 years if the current situation continues,” said Toshitaka Kondo, chairman of JPIC. “In other countries, central governments take measures to protect bookstores from the perspective of cultural protection. In order to make that common in Japan as well, we must get the public to support such measures.”

To address the situation, a parliamentary group working to revitalize brick-and-mortar bookstores and protect Japanese culture, which counts some 150 lawmakers with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party among its ranks, held a general meeting on Nov. 8 and compiled an interim report on the protection of bookstores.

The report proposes improvements to logistics such as reducing purchase returns and stock shortages and launching a government-subsidized model project to distribute books with IC tags attached, which is expected to help prevent shoplifting. The report also calls for restricting effective discounts, such as free shipping services by online bookstores, and creating rules for public libraries about excessive purchases of the same book and the timing of when new books are lent out. The final report will be compiled in the spring of 2023.

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarter

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarter

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarter

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2022

Apple’s latest iPad line-up – the 10th generation – is thinner, sleeker and far more powerful than its predecessor, the iPad Gen 9.

The iPad is Apple’s entry-level tablet computer, below the iPad Pro and iPad Air.

In the new iPad Gen 10, Apple has removed the physical home button and made the display far larger at 10.9 inches versus the 10.2-inch display of its Gen 9 iPads.

The display resolution has also been improved to 2360×1640 pixels from Gen 9’s 2160×1620 pixels.

The new iPad is also just 7mm in thickness and weighs a mere 477 grams compared to Gen 9’s 7.5mm and 487g.

Now that the new iPad no longer has the home button, its Touch ID is integrated with the power button at the top right edge, which is very convenient.

The new basic iPad also does not use Apple’s own lightning port, but the more universal USB-C port. This means that charging the iPad is far easier if you happen to have lost the cable that came with it.

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarterThe iPad Gen 10 is powered by Apple’s A14 Bionic with Neural Engine, which delivers 20% better performance than Gen 9. The A14 Bionic has six cores – two performance cores for handling heavy tasks and four high-efficiency cores for handling everyday tasks.

The A14 Bionic’s four-core graphic engine also delivers a 10% boost in performance for extensive graphic tasks like photo and video editing and game playing.

The Neural Engine in A14 has 16 cores, twice more than the A13 Bionic chip. The new Neural Engine can compute 11 trillion operations per second, so the machine learning tasks of the new iPad are 80% faster. The tasks include Live Text recognition in photos and videos, subject lifting from photos and face recognition.

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarterThe A14 Bionic chip uses the 5-nanometre process technology, compared to 7nm of A13, so the new chip uses less power. With less power use, you can use the iPad with peace of mind as the battery can last for about 10 hours for general tasks.

While testing, I found the new iPad handled most tasks smoothly. Websites were rendered quickly and smoothly, while there were no performance hiccups with music and video files.

Its bright, high-resolution display is great for watching films streamed via Apple TV or YouTube. Plus, its two landscape stereo speakers expand the sound stage to make games and films more exciting.

I tried the popular Ragnarok Mobile game with a high graphic display setting and it ran smoothly.

The iPad Gen 10 comes with Bluetooth 5.2 wireless connection, compared to Gen 9’s Bluetooth 4.2. The upgraded Bluetooth 5.2 allows quick connection to the AirPods Pro earbuds. The sound quality was also impressive.

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarterGen 10’s cameras are also an improvement. Now the front camera is at the centre of the landscape edge, instead of on the vertical screen like in previous models. This means video calls offer a far better view of your chat partner. Plus, its location will ensure you are always looking at the camera while on FaceTime or recording clips.

Its back camera now has a 12-megapixel resolution with a brighter f/1.8 aperture lens, compared to the 8MP resolution and f/2.4 lens of Gen 9. The new iPad also lets you record videos at 4K resolution compared to Gen 9’s 1080p.

Like Gen 9, the new iPad supports Apple Pencil version 1, provided you have the USB-C adaptor.

The Apple Pencil opens new doors to creativity as with it you can handwrite notes, draw, sign documents, mark up PDF files or retouch photos with precision.

If you’re used to the more expensive Apple Pencil 2, you may find the earlier version a little unresponsive, but I found that it does the job perfectly well.

Several apps like Notes, Mail, Numbers and Keynote have also adapted to the Apple Pencil and there are plenty available in the App Store.

I found that when I used the Apple Pencil on Notes, the app converted my handwriting into text mostly correctly.

The new iPad runs on iOS 16 which comes with several improved features that allow you to conveniently share and communicate with friends and contacts.

For instance, its Messages app now lets you edit or unsend a message you have just sent. You can also “unread” a message if you want time to respond.

Another useful feature is the function that allows you to remove backgrounds in photos. This function is available in Photos, Screenshot, Quick Look and Safari web browser. You simply tap on the subject, hold and a copy option will pop up for you to lift and paste the subject into another app.

The new iOS also allows you to pause videos on any frame that contains text so you can copy, translate, search or share the text.

Tech Review: iPad Gen 10: Sleeker, slimmer, smarterThe iPad can also be expanded with the new optional Magic Keyboard Folio that easily snaps to the Smart Connector on the left side of the iPad Gen 10 and turns it into a notebook.

The keyboard has large keys and is easy to use. There are also 14 function keys that allow you to quickly adjust the volume or display brightness among other things.

The trackpad is also fairly large and allows you to control the onscreen cursor like you would with a notebook computer.

The basic iPad Gen 10 with Wi-Fi and 64GB storage only retails for 17,900 baht, while the equivalent with Wi-Fi and cellular goes for 23,900 baht.

Key specs:

Operating system: iOS 16

Apart from helping make the food industry more sustainable, Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines Corporation (CPFPC) has also created jobs for 3,000 Filipinos.

The Thai Embassy’s Trade Centre in Manila said on Monday that CPFPC has also helped develop the Philippines’ livestock and aquaculture industries using technology and high-quality breeding methods to boost productivity.

CPFPC is a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Foods.

“The corporation has not only helped boost the image of Thailand and its products but also strengthened the trade relationship between the two countries,” said Janthana Chotimunee, minister counsellor (commercial) at the embassy.

CPFPC was established in the Philippines’ Bulacan province in 2010 with an investment of more than $2 billion (69.6 billion baht).

“CPFPC is now a large manufacturer in the Philippines’ livestock and aquaculture industries,” Janthana said.

She added that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is wooing foreign investors to help rebuild his country’s economy in the fallout of the pandemic.

“As of August, the Philippines has welcomed 74 public-private partnerships worth 2.25 trillion pesos [1.41 trillion baht],” she said.

However, she said, Thai investors should closely study the Philippines’ investment laws as they are quite complicated.

Terraform CEO Do Kwon hiding in Serbia: prosecutors

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

Do Kwon, the wanted co-founder and CEO of Terraform Labs accused of fraud following the massive collapse of the blockchain firm’s cryptocurrencies, is currently in Serbia, prosecutors said Monday.

The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office obtained intelligence that Kwon has stayed in Serbia for about month after leaving the United Arab Emirates. He was most recently spotted in Singapore in early September.

The disgraced entrepreneur has been under investigation for alleged fraud and tax evasion after investors in TerraUSD and Luna filed complaints against Kwon in May, accusing him of a Ponzi scheme over the loss of billions of won following the crash of both coins.

The prosecution office sought an arrest warrant for Kwon on charges of providing false information to investors, and Interpol also issued a red notice, used for the highest level of wanted suspects and criminals.

Kwon’s passport has since been invalidated.

Kwon has denied most of the allegations and insisted on his Twitter account that he is not running.

Prosecutors are also investigating Daniel Shin, another co-founder of Terraform Labs, on charges of gaining illegal profits before the collapse of the coins.

Nasa’s Orion capsule returns to Earth, capping Artemis I flight around moon

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

NASA’s Orion capsule barreled through Earth’s atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday after making an uncrewed voyage around the moon, winding up the inaugural mission of the U.S. agency’s new Artemis lunar program 50 years to the day after Apollo’s final moon landing.

The gumdrop-shaped Orion capsule, carrying a simulated crew of three mannequins wired with sensors, plunked down in the ocean at 9:40 a.m. PST (1740 GMT) off Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, demonstrating a high-stakes homecoming before flying its first crew of astronauts around the moon in the next few years.

“From Tranquility Base to Taurus-Littrow to the tranquil waters of the Pacific, the latest chapter of Nasa’s journey to the moon comes to a close. Orion, back on Earth,” said Nasa commentator Rob Navias on a live stream of the return, referring to the lunar sites the capsule soared over during its mission.

A US military helicopter and a group of fast boats approached the capsule after splashdown for inspections that will last roughly two hours. Standing by some 5 miles (8 km) away was the USS Portland, a US Naval vessel that will welcome Orion aboard to transport the capsule to San Diego, California.

The splashdown capped a 25-day mission less than a week after passing about 79 miles (127 km) above the moon in a lunar fly-by, and came about two weeks after reaching its farthest point in space, nearly 270,000 miles (434,500 km) from Earth.

Atmospheric friction slowed the capsule from 24,500 miles per hour (39,400 kph) to 325 mph, followed by two sets of parachutes that helped brake its speed to an expected 20 mph at splashdown. The capsule showed a “perfect” descent rate, Navias said.

The debut SLS-Orion voyage kicked off Apollo’s successor program, Artemis, aimed at returning astronauts to the lunar surface this decade and establishing a sustainable base there as a stepping stone to future human exploration of Mars.

Mission engineers will spend months examining data from the Artemis I mission. A crewed Artemis II flight around the moon and back could come as early as 2024, followed within a few more years by the program’s first lunar landing of astronauts, one of them a woman, with Artemis III.

Though the capsule encountered some unexpected communication blackouts and an electrical issue during its voyage around the moon, Nasa has given high marks to the performance of both SLS and Orion so far, boasting that they exceeded the US space agency’s expectations.

Re-entry marked the single most critical phase of Orion’s journey, testing whether its newly designed heat shield can withstand atmospheric friction and safely protect astronauts that would be on board.

Nasa officials have stressed the experimental nature of the Artemis I mission, marking the first launch of the Boeing Co-built SLS and the first combined with Orion, which previously flew a brief two-orbit test launched on a smaller Delta IV rocket in 2014.

Compared with Apollo, born of the Cold War-era US-Soviet space race, Artemis is more science-driven and broad-based, enlisting commercial partners such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and the space agencies of Europe, Canada, and Japan.

It also marks a major turning point for Nasa, redirecting its human spaceflight program beyond low-Earth orbit after decades focused on space shuttles and the ISS.

Belgium charges four people in European Parliament corruption probe

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

A Belgian judge charged four people on Sunday over allegedly receiving money and gifts from a Gulf state to influence decisions in the European Parliament, accusations that have caused consternation in Brussels.

Prosecutors searched 16 houses and seized 600,000 euros ($631,800) in Brussels on Friday (December 9) as part of an investigation into money laundering and corruption.

Six people were initially detained. Four have been charged and two released, prosecutors said in a statement. They did not name any of those involved.

Prosecutors said they had suspected for months that a Gulf state was trying to influence decisions in Brussels. A source with knowledge of the case said the state was World Cup host Qatar.

A Qatari official denied accusations of possible misconduct.

The European Parliament said at the weekend it had suspended the powers and duties of one of its vice presidents, Greek socialist Eva Kaili, in light of the Belgian investigation.

The Greek socialist PASOK party said in a statement that it was expelling Kaili from its ranks.

It was not immediately clear if she had been charged in the case. Her office did not answer telephone calls or respond to an email requesting comment.
