SUNDAY, JANUARY 15, 2023

A single winning ticket for a Mega Millions lottery jackpot of at least $1.35 billion, the second-largest jackpot in US history, was sold in Maine, lottery organizers said on Saturday.

“Congratulations to the Maine State Lottery, which has just won its first-ever Mega Millions jackpot,” Ohio Lottery director Pat McDonald, lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a statement. “It’s the fourth billion-dollar jackpot in Mega Millions history.”

The winning ticket, which cost $2 and matched all six numbers, was bought at Hometown Gas & Grill convenience store in Lebanon, Maine. The ticket holder, yet to be identified, has the choice of a lump-sum payment of $723.5 million or an annual payout over 30 years.

Most winners go for the lump sum, which comes with a hefty tax bill, according to the Mega Millions website.

The winning numbers for the jackpot were 30, 43, 45, 46 and 61, plus the power ball 14.

Fred Cotreau, the owner of Hometown Gas & Grill, told Reuters when he got the phone call at 6 am he thought it was a scam, but soon realized it wasn’t.

“It’s been a really busy morning and we are anxiously awaiting to see hopefully it is somebody we know and we see often,” Cotreau said.

Half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold, where the money supports lottery beneficiaries, such as education or public employee pensions, and retailer commissions.

Cotreau stands to receive a substantial bonus for the ticket.

Thailand tops online search list for Lunar New Year travel: Sojern

SUNDAY, JANUARY 15, 2023

Thailand topped the destination list for online flight searches for travel in the region during the Lunar New Year, a company that focuses on digital marketing for the travel industry said.

Thailand moved from second to first place this year, accounting for 27% of all travel searches in the Asia Pacific region for the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, China-based Sojern said.

Thailand was followed by Japan (19%) and Singapore (18%) – which fell from first to third place – the Philippines (10%), and Malaysia (8%).

In terms of cities and resorts, Bangkok accounted for 22% of all searches. It was followed by Tokyo (15%), Manila (9%), Phuket (7%) and Taiwan (7%), according to Sojern.

In terms of flight bookings, the top two countries of origin for travel to or within the region for Chinese New Year are Singapore (16%) and the United States (12%), Sojern said, adding that the strong US dollar was likely a factor making travel to the region popular with US tourists. Thailand (9%), Taiwan (8%), and Japan (7%) took the third to fifth spots on Sojern’s list.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said on Sunday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was overjoyed that Thailand, according to Sojern, received the most attention from tourists in terms of flight searches.

Anucha said the government expected a surge of tourists from China and other countries to visit the Asia-Pacific region during the Lunar New Year holiday, and that this would help revive the tourism industry this year.

The reputation and image of Thailand also creates confidence among foreign tourists, helping Thailand to retain its top spots among foreign tourists in all seasons,” Anucha said.

“The prime minister would like to thank all state and private agencies for holding interesting activities to attract tourists and help make Thailand a hotspot,” he said.

The spokesman added that Prayut has instructed all relevant government agencies to prepare to welcome foreign tourists during the Lunar New Year and ensure their safety.

The survey was conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) from January 9 to 12 among 1,310 respondents nationwide. The respondents, aged 18 and above, came from different levels of income and educational backgrounds.

A catamaran that had gone missing late last month was spotted floating near Indonesian waters.

The Phuket Marine Office said on Saturday that the catamaran had been spotted by the captain of a fishing boat on the edge of Thai territorial waters.

The catamaran named Marcopolo had been reported missing by owner Marco Ceferin on December 30. Ceferin told Phuket’s Chalong police that the catamaran had disappeared from its dock in Nai Harn Bay.

A high-pressure system from China and the South China Sea will bring cold, strong winds to upper Thailand, pulling the temperature down by several degrees for most of next week.

“The temperature will drop by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in the Northeast,” the Thai Meteorological Department said on Sunday. Temperatures in the North, East and Central regions, including Greater Bangkok will drop by 2-4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, isolated heavy rain has been forecast for the South as the northeast monsoon across the Gulf of Thailand and the South will strengthen. Flash floods and runoffs have also been predicted, while waves in the upper Gulf are expected to be about 2 metres high and higher in thundershowers.

Bangkok beware! Heavy PM2.5 pollution expected next week

Bangkok beware! Heavy PM2.5 pollution expected next week

SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2023

Large areas of Bangkok will be hit by heavy PM2.5 fine dust on Monday and Tuesday due to the lack of breeze and airflow.

The city administration’s Environmental Office said on Saturday that the lack of wind and breeze in Bangkok essentially traps the pollution within the city.

The areas expected to be hit by high accumulation of PM2.5 are downtown Bangkok and the northern and southern zones of Thon Buri to the west of the city, the office warned. The unit comes under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter and can be hazardous to people with lung and respiratory problems. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the annual average level of PM2.5 should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic metre of air (μg/m3).

Bangkok’s reading on Saturday was 24.8μg/m3, the BMA’s Air Quality Information Centre reported.

The BMA expects weather conditions in the city to improve between January 18 and 20, with stronger airflow brought by northeasterly winds.

The Thai Meteorological Department, meanwhile, said on Saturday that light breezes in Bangkok over the next few days are not good for the city’s air pollution problem, as fine dust will create a cloud of smog in the morning.
