35,000 AstraZeneca bottles sent to Bangkok hospitals, as vaccination push begins on Monday

The Ministry of Public Health has distributed 35,000 bottles of the AstraZeneca vaccine to 148 hospitals in Bangkok to prepare for Covid-19 vaccination, Satit Pitutecha, Deputy Minister of Public Health said.

He said the vaccination drive would be launched as scheduled on June 7 since the vaccines had already been distributed.

Satit’s confirmation eases worries after there was confusion last week when many hospitals, especially private hospitals in many provinces assigned as vaccination units, called for cancellation of vaccination appointments for those registered under MohPrompt, saying vaccines had not been delivered to them.

The ministry has delivered 30 bottles to Bang Khun Thian 1 Hospital 1; 170 bottles to Bang Pakok 9 International Hospital; 100 bottles to Bangmod Hospital; 210 bottles to Kasemrad Hospital Bang Khae; 890 bottles to Bangpakok 8 Hospital; 500 bottles to Phyathai 3 Hospital; 420 bottles to Rajapipat Hospital; 1,030 bottles to Central Hospital; 650 bottles to Taksin Hospital; 290 bottles to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital; 300 bottles Sirindhorn Hospital, among others.

Vaccination will be given to those registered with MohPrompt from June 7-13.

Dr Worchet Techarak, director of Nakornping Hospital, said that the hospital’s vaccination unit could accommodate 500 people per day, while the unit at Royal Park Rajapruek, which is also managed by the hospital, can vaccinate up to 2,500 per day.

“We chose to expand our vaccination unit to a second location at Royal Park Rajapruek to avoid crowding at the hospital,” he said.

“The park has ample areas for parking and for vaccine recipients to register, get tested, get vaccinated and remain in the rest area to monitor for side-effects.”

Offices of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) announced on Saturday.

The ONCB revealed that the airport interdiction task force on Wednesday found a suspicious parcel sent by a Thai to an address in New Zealand.

Officials found seven pulses and 520 grams of methamphetamine inside.

The drugs were confiscated, and the ONCB has already informed the authorities in New Zealand.

Recently, a few cases have emerged of drugs being trafficked from Thailand.

Reacting to the cases, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Tuesday that he wants the ONCB to check whether local drug traffickers monitored by police have a hand in crimes overseas.

US assistance to Thailand to combat Covid-19 worth $30m #SootinClaimon.Com

US assistance to Thailand to combat Covid-19 worth $30m

The US government has donated $30 million in total Covid-related assistance to Thailand, the countrys embassy in Bangkok said in a statement, underlining the close bilateral ties.

The assistance included $17.5 million in ventilators, respirators, surgical masks, goggles, and other protective equipment to Thai doctors and nurses, plus assistance to support refugees in border camps.

The Centres for Disease Control (CDC) has provided an additional $13 million in assistance while working side-by-side with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health.

To strengthen the Thai Covid-19 response at every level, USAID, CDC and the US Army have assisted the Thai government with boosting diagnostic capacity.

USAID assisted Thailand’s confirmation of the first traveller-imported Covid-19 case in January 2020.

The CDC developed an enhanced surveillance programme for nine camps on the Thai-Myanmar border. To date, it has tested more than 1,500 specimens for Covid-19 and detected three outbreaks, providing camp healthcare providers with early awareness which prevented widespread epidemics in a high-risk environment, the embassy said.

USAID supported online counselling and provided pulse oximeters to key populations who have been affected by Covid-19 to monitor their health and facilitate access to treatment. This includes migrants.

Meanwhile, the US Army medical scientists are collaborating with Thai counterparts to develop Thailand’s own vaccine candidates, intensifying efforts to protect Thais in the future.

The embassy said CDC and USAID have led outreach efforts to migrant communities. Over 117,601 migrants and vulnerable people have been educated on sanitary guidelines to eliminate or reduce the spread of Covid-19.

As part of quarantine assistance, USAID supported the PhonPhai mobile application to enable direct and timely distribution of 188,203 relief kits and drinking water (valued at nearly $4 million) to quarantined individuals across 69 of Thailand’s 77 provinces.

The US government has announced a framework for sharing 80 million vaccine doses globally by the end of June. The plan for the first 25 million doses includes 7 million for Asia, including Thailand. This is in addition to the $4 billion US commitment to Covax, a WHO initiative.
