Beethoven’s 250th anniversary is being celebrated all over the world, and festivities are due to kick off next Tuesday, December 17. Beethoven’s birthday will be marked worldwide in events that will be widely streamed and televised through the organisers in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven’s birthplace.

Bangkok will have a unique “Beethoven X Project” by Bangkok Opera Foundation, which will feature young people interacting with the iconic composer’s legacy.

The centerpiece is the collaboration between four youth orchestras including Siam Sinfonietta, Thai Youth Orchestra, Immanuel Orchestra and Isaan Duriyang Orchestra League (IDOL) in performing all of Beethoven’s symphonies over the course of the year, starting this month and running through to December 2020.

To kick off the “Beethoven X Project” in Thailand, Bangkok Opera Foundation will perform “Big Bang Beethoven X,” a flashmob performance of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” on December 17 at 12:00pm, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

“Big Bang Beethoven X” was conceived by Somtow Sucharitkul, president of Bangkok Opera Foundation and artistic director of Opera Siam International, as a kind of “reverse flashmob”.

“Flashmobs,” according to Somtow, “begin at a single point in space, and more and more show up until the space is crammed with performers. Our idea is dictated by the structure of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony — it begins with just cellos and basses in one spot of the BACC. Other musicians join them from different balconies and verandas. And finally, in a cosmic ending, a chorus joins from the highest balcony, symbolizing how the seed of Beethoven’s genius has grown over the years to fill the whole world.” Instead of the world coming to a point, he explains, it is about a point expanding to fill the world — a musical “big bang”.

The most venerable ensemble in this collaboration is the Thai Youth Orchestra, Thailand’s “establishment” youth orchestra, under the aegis of the Culture Ministry’s Department of Cultural Promotion and directed by the Akkrawat Srinarong, scion of one Thailand’s leading classical music families. Recently the TYO joined Siam Sinfonietta as one of the two Thai orchestras to win first place at the prestigious Summa Cum Laude competition in the Musikverein, Vienna.

Siam Sinfonietta is the groundbreaking youth orchestra founded by Somtow and featuring the “Somtow Method”, a revolutionary new style of music teaching. The orchestra has won multiple first place awards around the world including three times in Carnegie Hall, and has toured extensively in Europe, America and the Middle East. The orchestra is noted for tackling some of the most ambitious music in the repertoire, such as the Mahler symphonies, Stravinsky and Bartok.

Immanuel, an exciting young orchestra from Bangkok’s Music for Life Foundation, and IDOL, the most recent of the orchestras established in Korat last year, are the other two orchestras in this Beethoven X project.

The Siam Sinfonietta and its founder Somtow have teamed up with Akkrawat and with Trisdee na Patalung, Thailand’s internationally popular conductor as well as Welsh conductor Jonathan Mann of the Immanuel Orchestra and Voraprach Wongsathapornpat, a young conductor who recently returned to Thailand from Cambridge.

Jakarta –  Amateur Naraajie Emerald Ramadhanputra flew the flag for Indonesia by carding a solid seven-under-par 65 to share the opening honours with South African Keith Horne and Steven Jeffress of Australia at the BNI Indonesian Masters supported by Bank BRI and MedcoEnergi on Thursday.

The talented 19-year-old, who is the highest-ranked amateur in the country, got off to a flying start with five straight birdies from the 11th hole before adding three more birdies against a bogey on his way home at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Jeffress, who played without a practice round this week, rediscovered the spark in his game as he closed with three straight birdies from the seventh to seize a share of the lead in the US$750,000 Asian Tour event, which forms the third leg of the 2019/20 Panasonic Swing.

Veteran Horne launched his relentless bid for a breakthrough title by firing nine birdies against two bogeys in the Indonesian showpiece, which is celebrating its ninth straight edition on the Asian Tour this week.

Korea’s Doyeob Mun and Josh Younger of Australia trail the leading trio by one in fourth place following matching rounds of 66 in what is the penultimate event of the 2019 Asian Tour season.

Newly crowned Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand battled to a 68 to tie in eighth place while countryman and defending champion Poom Saksansin posted a 73 to sit in tied-85th place.

By being the flagship event of the Asian Tour, the BNI Indonesian Masters will award the winner with no less than 20 Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, ensuring more players benefit from the points breakdown.

The winner of the 2019 BNI Indonesian Masters will again receive a coveted spot in the World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational in 2020.

Asian debutants rise to occasion as International team leads Day 1 at Presidents Cup

Melbourne – Debutants Sungjae Im, Byeong Hun An and C.T. Pan enjoyed winning starts in their Presidents Cup debuts as an inspired International Team stunned the United States Team 4-1 in the opening day’s Four-Ball session at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Thursday.

Korea’s Im produced a glorious chip-in eagle on the opening hole as he and Canadian partner Adam Hadwin edged Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay 1-up in the second match of the Four-Ball session.

An, a late call-up to replace an injured Jason Day, teamed up with home hero Adam Scott to defeat Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau 2 and 1 in a match they never trailed while Pan and Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama earned the fourth and final point for Ernie Els’ team with a thrilling 1-up victory over Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson.

Louis Oosthuizen and Abraham Ancer, one of seven debutants in the team, were the other pair who delivered a point for the International Team while U.S. Team playing captain Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas won the first point of the session with a 4 and 3 win over Marc Leishman and Joaquin Niemann.

This is the first time since 2005 that the International Team has led after the first round in Presidents Cup history. The Internationals, led by Els for the first time, is chasing its second win in the prestigious team event following its lone victory in 1998 when it was staged in Royal Melbourne.

South African legend Els has imparted his knowledge of Royal Melbourne where he holds the course record of 60 to his players and the 21-year-old Im, the 2019 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, credited his captain for his flying start.

“Surprisingly I wasn’t too nervous. I was going to hit a 3-iron off the tee but Ernie came up and advised me to hit a driver since the pin was to the left and obviously it worked out really well. I’m really happy about my results and I’m excited for tomorrow,” said Im, who will partner Cameron Smith in the last Foursomes match on Friday against Gary Woodland and Rickie Fowler.

“I feel like our teamwork was great. When I wasn’t playing well, Adam (Hadwin) would cover for me and vice versa. I think our teamwork really helped make our match great.”

An was delighted to start his first Presidents Cup on a winning note alongside Scott, who now holds the most appearances in the event with nine for the International Team. “It was crazy. I was a little bit nervous. It was fun playing in front of a home crowd, and then playing with Adam calmed me down a lot, and that’s why I was able to hit some great shots in the first couple of holes,” said the Korean.

“We got in the mood and got some birdies going. Overall we played great. When he’s not playing well the first couple holes, I had him covered, and when I was struggling in the middle, he got some birdies going,” said An.

Pan, the first player from Chinese Taipei to feature for the International Team, was the last pairing out on course as he and Matsuyama fought tooth-and-nail with Reed, nicknamed Captain America for his performances in team events, and Simpson.

The 28-year-old said a special video viewing on Wednesday night during a team function which showcased the International Team’s victory in 1998 rallied him and his teammates.

“The video, even after last night, I watched it a couple of times because I loved it. It’s been 21 long years, and I know it’s day one, but we still have a lot of work to do. That video definitely pumped and excited everyone on the International Team,” said Pan, who won the RBC Heritage in April.

“It’s incredible, especially the last match to finish on 18, as well. The crowd are absolutely amazing and the people, the feeling, it’s making me like speechless. Yeah, I played great. We’re very happy to earn this point.”

Pan paid tribute to Captain Els’ leadership. “It’s great. He has a system going in. We are his soldiers, so we follow his instruction, and that’s what we did today, and it worked great. He’s done so much preparations the last few months. It’s working.”

With their matched tied through 16 holes, Matsuyama drained a 28-foot birdie on 17 to regain a 1-up lead and burst into a fist-pump celebration which ignited one of the loudest cheers of the day.

“Hideki, he’s such a clutch putter. I was close but he made that tough putt, so that was such a crucial putt,” said Pan.

A researcher at Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) this week successfully demonstrated the prototype of a pm2.5 dust eliminator using ions and a negative electric change, which could soon be installed in communities.

Assoc Prof Anan Thongraya, vice-chairman of the university’s technology research and development department, said that the prototype works like the closed-area air purifier but has been redesigned for use in the open air with reduced power consumption,

Chief of the research centre, Prof Dr Chanchai Thongsopa, revealed that this PM 2.5 dust eliminator uses the principle of releasing negative charges generated from tens of thousands of volts in a 220-voltage circuit with direct current voltage of approximately 35,000 volts, 18 mA high voltage, low current, and a high voltage of 35,000 volts to send electric ions into the air through the pointed end of the copper plate to capture PM2.5 dust particles. This will neutralise dust particles leaving only clean air without dust and smoke behind.

The prototype measures 120 cm x120 cm x120 cm and costs Bt200,000 per device. It can eliminate dust up to 100,000 micrograms an hour equal to the efficiency of a medium-sized tree in a total area of about 9 square metres with an average electricity cost of Bt1.50 per hour.

The innovation will help prevent dust and reduce the risk of respiratory failure and allergies, saving health costs. The team is hoping to install the device in urban communities and is now discussing possible locations with the relevant authorities.

Cambodia’s economic growth is projected at 7.1 per cent this year or about $24 billion thanks to the good performance of the industrial sector that is creating strong domestic revenue.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Cambodia University of Specialties on Wednesday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that based on the valuation from the National Bank of Cambodia’s advisory council in late November, the country’s economic growth will achieve 7.1 per cent this year. The figure is higher than other countries in Asean.

“The rate of economic growth translates to $24 billion this year and will reach around $30 billion in 2020,” said the prime minister.

He said revenue generated from customs, excise and taxation has contributed a lot to the Kingdom’s economic growth.

By November 9, the revenue from customs and taxation reached $4.54 billion which exceeded the target set last year.

“The revenue collection target from our customs and excise for this year was $2.26 billion, but now we have collected some $3.01 billion which is $758 million more or a 33.5 per cent increase.

“While the revenue collection from taxation that we planned for this year is at $2.29 billion and now we have collected some $2.63 billion which exceeded the target by $345 million,” he said.

The latest economic report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in October said Cambodia’s growth remains strong at seven per cent this year and will dip to 6.8 per cent in 2020.

The growth is a bit higher than many other Asean member states. For example, Vietnam’s GDP growth is projected at 6.5 per cent this year and 2020, which is a drop from 7.1 per cent last year.

Thailand’s economic growth was projected at 2.9 per cent this year and three per cent next year, while Laos’ was projected at 6.4 per cent this year. It is expected to be 6.5 per cent next year.

Cambodia exported more than $7.97 billion worth of garment, textile and footwear products in the first nine months of this year – up 13.18 per cent year-on-year from $7.044 billion – a report from the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s General Department of Customs and Excise said in mid-November.

Only a few days after Nintendo Co.’s Switch made its long-anticipated entry into China, one analyst is making a bullish case for Mario and Zelda’s prospects in the world’s biggest gaming arena.

Nintendo could sell as many as four million Switch units in China in the fiscal year ending March and 12 million units of software, London-based tech equity researcher Pelham Smithers wrote in a note to clients. That could add as much as 23 billion yen ($212 million) to the Kyoto-based company’s full-year operating profit, Smithers said.

Nintendo and its local partner Tencent Holdings Ltd. began selling the Switch console in China on Dec. 10, a move that has excited Nintendo investors hopeful of tapping a new market. But the optimism has been tampered by the historically lackluster performance of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox consoles, which have had several years to crack the market where smartphones are the dominant gaming platform. Video game giants are also hampered by Beijing’s insistence on vetting all games, which limits the library available to fans and slows new releases. At launch, the Switch only had one state-approved game to play.

“While the history of the game console in China is not a happy one, lack of success is not necessarily down to lack of interest on the part of the consumer,” Smithers wrote in the report. “After all: if China’s consumers didn’t play console video games, the authorities wouldn’t have bothered banning them in the first place.”

Key Insights:

–Switch hardware sales in China may range between 2 million and 4 million units in fiscal 2019 and between 3 million and 6 million the following year. Software sales will range between 6 million and 12 million in the current period and 15 million and 30 million in the period ending March 2021.

–China could contribute between 11.6 billion yen and 23.1 billion yen to Nintendo’s operating profit this year and 27.8 billion to 55.6 billion yen in the next.

–Smithers forecasts a ratio of three game purchases for each hardware unit sold in both years.

–He also assumes Tencent takes a 30% share of software sales income, while all of the hardware revenue goes to Nintendo, and that the two companies split the marketing costs.

–Nintendo’s sales in China may be capped by the company’s unwillingness to significantly increase production volume of the console and risk building up unsold inventory.

Nintendo’s signature device is selling for 2,099 yuan ($298), about the same as elsewhere around the world. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe have been green-lit by the government. Nintendo is also preparing to introduce the Switch Lite — a cheaper version of the console intended to boost the device’s mainstream appeal — to China at a future date, development partner Tencent said in a social media post last week.

Sales of the Switch might have topped 50,000 units on launch day, according to market researcher Niko Partners, which gathers data from online retailers. Some 20,000 units were sold via JD.com and another 10,000 through TMall, it said in a report. Niko Partners forecasts the sales will reach 100,000 units by the end of the year, far below the 1 to 2 million estimated by Smithers.

This isn’t Nintendo’s first attempt to crack the market. Official console sales in China remain a fraction of the overall gaming arena, as region locks and delayed hardware releases push gamers toward imported options. Nintendo confronted similar challenges in attempts to enter China dating back to 2003. It tried to sell, via a joint venture, its Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 3DS and a peculiar China-only portable console called iQue Player. Rampant piracy and slow game launches made those products unappealing.
