Titled “Force for Nature”, the Stella McCartney’s Spring ‘20 collection projects a strong-hearted woman who cares about the future of our planet, sending a defiant message of activism with poetic phrases by author and environmentalist Jonathan Safran Foer. Recognised as a force for nature herself, McCartney personifies this spirit of positive change and this season she urges everybody to join her.

Foer, renowned for his best-selling book “Everything is Illuminated”, lent his words to a sustainable capsule within the collection titled “We are the Weather”. Named after his upcoming novel about the climate crisis, it features pieces emblazoned with statements like “we are entirely free to live differently” across men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, knitwear and accessories.

The palette is a fresh and revitalising step into spring that embodies the spirit of the wild, combining earthy hues like oat, cacao, ginger, stone, khaki and wolf grey with pulses of vivid colour like pink flamingo, violet, lilac, Bellini blue and lipstick red.

McCartney’s eco ethos and hope for a circular future remain at the forefront, with more than 60 per cent of the collection made from sustainable materials. A new development for the brand, traceable alpaca wool has been introduced, while organic cotton, sustainable viscose, Econyl regenerated nylon and recycled polyester continue to be used throughout.

Standout pieces in the “We are the Weather” capsule include a jumpsuit, utility dress, trousers and puffer coat decorated with the label’s artful sun print. With countercultural, cult appeal, the print features handwritten messages from Foer radiating from a graphic sun illustration.

Functionality and a strong utilitarian silhouette are a staple for McCartney and this season they are reimagined in bright new hues. Organic cotton denim jumpsuits are brought to life in yellow and light teal, and a lightweight workwear jacket and cargo trousers are beautified in soft, vivid shades of lilac. Heavily bleached cargo trousers with statement patch pockets are a fresh perspective on everyday denim.

Moments of powerful minimalism cut through the collection, adding clarity and modernity. A standout dress with an effortless silhouette splashes through in rich red, while a chic camel coat is a quintessential classic. Sophisticated cocktail dresses are defined by sculptural, curving lines trimmed in gold.

The Siriraj Dust Mite Centre for Services and Research recently said it would produce dust mite on semi-industrial scale which will further be used as the initial substance in mite allergen vaccine, after more than 20 years of research.

They were granted mite allergen vaccine certification by the Thai Food and Drug Administration on October 31. The mite centre now provides the know-how to the private sector and aims to become the central hub for R&D on dust mite allergy in the Asean region to produce more mite allergen-friendly products or suggest improvement or advice to the private sector or nongovernmental organisations, such as anti-mite mattress and air-conditioning.

Prof Dr Anchalee Tungtrongchitr, the director, said that “Another service provided here is anti-mite effectiveness in product testing, to protect consumers from pseudo-science-backed products.”

Local producer Raming ramps up knowledge about everyone’s favourite brew with a series of appreciation programmes

Savouring a cup of tea is a lot like savouring a glass of wine – you breathe it in, sip with as much air as you can, roll it around your mouth to let the flavours express themselves, swallow, and wait for the lingering notes left on your tongue.

Tea is said to be the world’s most popular beverage after water and is consumed in different ways. The tea tree, Camellia Sinenses, is native to different regions of China, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam and India due to their perfect climate and soil. But while many people, especially in Asia, enjoy a cuppa, how many of them actually know the right way to drink tea?

“It is the science and art of tea making,” says Wongduan “Nan” Wangviwat, the executive director of Cha Raming and the wife of Jakarin Wangviwat, the third generation of the Raming Tea family, the first black tea producer in Thailand, at their Ramino coffee shop in Chiang Mai. “We would like Thai people to know more about tea.”

“We would like Thais to know more about tea,” says  Wongduan Wangviwat, the executive director of Cha Raming.

Determined to do just that, Wongduan took to the internet to look for tea institutes and discovered the Asian School of Tea in Darjeeling, India.

“We wanted a place that specialised in black tea of the same type as our Raming tea, and that meant India and Sri Lanka which produce Assam tea. Darjeeling in India is the source of some of the best tea in the world and so I contacted Souvik Nandy, the founder of the Asian School of Tea, and signed up for a course,” says Wongduan.

“His idea in setting up his school was similar to what I had in mind – connecting with the culture and community. I didn’t want to know about the production but about how tea is used and how it relates to the way of life. We want to be a part of the community and also want people to know more about our tea, so we can improve cultural values and attract tourists. These days, people tend to travel not just for pleasure but also to gain knowledge and tea is a good example of their interest.”

The Asian School of Tea is one of the best tea schools in the world and known for successfully integrating cultural aspects of growing. Its founder says it takes pride in “reaching the learners” and does this through three programmes. The first is “Tea Sommelier”, a course on the fundamentals of tea. The second is “Tea Tourism” designed for tea lovers to appreciate the origins of their preferred cup that includes visits to the tea plantations, and the last is “Personalised Programme” designed to cater to the specific requirements of a group.

Wongduan Wangviwat, left, demonstrates the right way to make tea after attending the Tea Sommelier programme at the Asian School of Tea, founded by Souvik Nandy, right, in India.

“I find something very harmonising about tea. It is a good reason to communicate – during sessions we talk about tea all the time. We don’t have fixed classroom sessions as such but tea in all its dimensions is at the very centre of each of our programmes. We can only teach the technique and pass on the knowledge. After finishing in the course, participants havea responsibility to carry on the practice,” says Souvik Nandy, 28, who is also the lecturer at the Asian School of Tea.

“The Tea Sommelier runs for seven days. Here, participants learn about tea cultivation, tea processing and tea testing. They learn about organic cultivation, about badami cultivation, and then we go beyond conventional tea to herbal tea. We have now added tea and food pairing. We drink tea all day but different teas. The Chinese drink green tea or jasmine tea, but we have Masala chai (a flavoured tea beverage made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs). You find it in all the streets in India, everywhere,” he adds.

Early this year, Wongduan took part in the 10-day Tea Sommelier programme, visiting several tea sources, learning the way of collecting tea leaves from the community, and discovering the varieties of teas grown at different altitudes.

“Tea is a good reason to communicate,” says Souvik Nandy, the founder of the Asian School of Tea in India.

“A tea sommelier is similar to a wine sommelier. He or she who must first know the basics of tea before going on to how and when tea is served and which type of tea is paired with what kind of food. Tea is interesting, and we will help consumers learn more about tea and the right way of brewing and drinking it. Tea is really good for the health, as it can control blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and atherosclerosis. So, it is our responsibility as producers to communicate those benefits to consumers,” she adds.

Wongduan has now created three courses of her own, namely “Tea Sommelier”, “Art School of Tea” and “Personalise.” “Tea Sommelier” is a 5-day course for 5-10 entrepreneurs who run tea and coffee shops, bakeries and the food and beverage departments of hotels. It is priced at Bt25,000 with a certificate and will be taught by Souvik himself. “Art School of Tea” is a 3-day, 2-night course for the public and tourists and includes a visit to a tea plantation, learning how to pick the delicate leaves and the process of turning these into the tea we buy in stores as well as spending time with the Lahu hilltribe. It also features a painting working with Siam Celadon and mixing types of tea with other ingredients to make participants’ very own blends. It’s priced at Bt10,000 including food and accommodation. The “Personalise” course is designed for 5-10 persons.

“In the near future, we will introduce an intensive course for entrepreneurs thinking about opening their own cafes which will cover pairing bakery items with tea and blending a signature tea,” she says. “Our aim is to spread the word about tea far and wide.”

Thailand’s Poom Saksansin will set his sights on completing a hat-trick when he takes on the elite field at the BNI Indonesian Masters supported by Bank BRI and MedcoEnergi which starts on Thursday.

Poom, a two-time winner of the BNI Indonesian Masters in 2016 and 2018, returns to his happy hunting ground at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club this week, bidding to equal Lee Westwood’s record of having three victories in the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.

The 26-year-old Thai hopes to renew his affinity with the course as he takes aim at a fine showing to redeem himself from a lacklustre season where he had made only five cuts in 11 starts to sit in 59th place on the current Asian Tour Order of Merit.

He will headline the talented 144-man field from 21 countries alongside countryman and newly minted Order of Merit champion Jazz Janewattananond, as well as American John Catlin and local hero Rory Hie, who have all won on Tour this season.

“I am very happy to be back glad. I haven’t had a good season to be honest but I hope to regain my confidence with a good result this week. I love the greens here and I feel familiar with the type of grass here,” said Poom, who will be chasing for a hat-trick to match Lee Westwood’s winning record in the tournament.

“I will try and do my best again. Hopefully I can defend my title successfully. That will be a great boost to my confidence. The game is getting better. I feel like I can play better now, compared to the earlier in the year,” added Poom who fended off the challenges from his more illustrious rivals included Justin Rose and Henrik Stensonto to win the Indonesian Masters by three shots for his third Asian Tour victory last year.

Jazz, the highest-ranked player in the field at 57th place on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), will have the goal of breaking into the world’s top-50 at the back of his mind when he tees up for the popular event, where he came in runner-up 12 months ago.

“This week is quite an important week for me. Even though I have won the Order of Merit already, I still have a bonus to play for and that is to try and break into top-50 on the world rankings before the year ends,” said Jazz.

Catlin, who claimed his fourth Asian Tour title in Thailand last month, will be looking to improve on his tied-17th place finish last year when he resumes his chase for more glory at the event, which forms the third leg of the 2019/20 Panasonic Swing.

Hie reckoned the pressure to perform well in front of his home crowd will not get to him this week, having already won his first Asian Tour title in India three months ago. The 31-year-old, however, will have to battle with a recovering thumb injury when he spearheads the 26-man strong local charge at the Indonesian showpiece.

By being the flagship event of the Asian Tour, the BNI Indonesian Masters will award the winner with no less than 20 Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, ensuring more players benefit from the points breakdown.

The 2019 BNI Indonesian Masters, which is celebrating its ninth straight edition on the Asian Tour this week, will be the penultimate event of the 2019 season.

The winner of the event will again receive a coveted spot in the World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational in 2020.

Mainland China’s Li looks to deliver for Captain Els at Presidents Cup

Melbourne –  Mainland China’s Haotong Li believes the International Team can bring the Presidents Cup home for inspirational captain Ernie Els against a dominant United States Team, led by Tiger Woods.

Li will not see action in the opening day’s Four-Ball session at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Thursday but will be ready to give everything he has when Els calls on him in what is his debut appearance in the prestigious team competition.

Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan will go out in the fourth match alongside Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama and face Webb Simpson and Patrick Reed. Home hero Marc Leishman and Chilean debutant Joaquin Niemann will square up against Woods and Justin Thomas in the top match followed by Sungjae Im/Adam Hadwin against Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay,  Adam Scott/Byeong Hun An vs Bryson DeChambeau/Tony Finau and Abraham Ancer/Louis Oosthuizen vs Dustin Johnson/Gary Woodland in the final Four-Ball match.

“It’s been fantastic. It’s like a dream come true. Two years ago, I nearly made the team but right now, I feel like everything is unreal,” said Li, who is a two-time European Tour winner.

“Ernie has done a lot and did many things as captain. Hopefully we can take this honour and play well for him. The mood … it’s always happy, always with passion. If you see our locker room, you will see a lot of stuff like logos, like 15.5 (points required to win), that’s our goal. It’s very special.”

Being the first mainland Chinese to play for the International Team, Li hopes to see the game in China maintaining its growth and development. “For sure, golf in China is huge now. There are so many juniors compared to the days when I was playing (junior golf). We have a bright future. Hopefully, we can bring the trophy back,” said Li.

He has enjoyed success in Australia previously when he partnered Ashun Wu to lead China to a T2 finish at the ISPS HANDA Melbourne World Cup of Golf in 2016. With his exuberance and attacking flair, Li endeared himself with the Australian crowds then which he hopes to have the crowds fully behind the International Team this week.

“We need to play our best games. Bring our A-game against them. On this course, we have a lot of chance. Just have to believe you can play well on this course. This course is so different, it’s a special course and you have to play smart,” he said.

Pan, whose maiden PGA TOUR victory at the RBC Heritage in April helped secure his place in the International Team, hopes to rewrite Presidents history by playing a big role in Els’ side. The U.S. Team has won the last seven Presidents Cups.

“I think everyone on the team knows the history of the Presidents Cup, no doubt. It’s in the media. It’s unavoidable. But for the players, we just try to prepare every step, everything we can, especially with this course that’s going to be playing very different. It’s going to play very hard. So we are just trying to get as much preparation done as possible.”

Like Li, Pan is also prepared to give everything he has for his captain. “Captain Els is such an amazing guy, and he definitely made me feel like I’m part of the family. That’s what he’s been trying to do the last three months, and he’s done a great job with everyone on the International Team. It’s been such a great opportunity to be here, and to get to play along with my other teammates, it’s been quite an experience.”

A former world amateur No. 1, Pan is also excited to return to Royal Melbourne where he finished T5 in the 2014 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship. “I think it favors my game for sure because I’m a position player, so this course is about where you position your ball, your second shot, your approach shot, even how you putt. So I think this is going to be quite a fun week. I’m just going to enjoy it.”

Kwanchai Paphatphong, the organising chairman, said the drop was due to many factors, including the declining economy and the ongoing trade wars, which made people more cautious about spending.

Toyota gained the highest overall car booking of 6,243 units, followed by Honda at 5,766, Mazda at 3,998, Isuzu at 3,716, and Mitsubishi at 2,959.

In the luxury segment, Mercedes-Benz topped the bookings with 1,862, followed by BMW with 969, Volvo with 474, Audi with 278, and Porsche with 257.

The motorcycle segment also saw a small drop to 7,251 booking
