Beauty pageants can’t escape from fielding ‘political’ questions

Beauty pageants can’t escape from fielding ‘political’ questions

Dec 10. 2019

The answer by Thailand’s Paweensuda “Fahsai” Drouin – who finished among the top 5 – at the Miss Universe 2019 finale in Atlanta, Georgia, has led to the observation that the question asked at the pageant this year touched more on politics. But some feel that politics and the pageant should be separated, blaming the government and “Uncle Too” (the prime minister) as being the reason why Fahsai could not answer the final question freely.

Paweensuda “Fahsai” Drouin

Fahsai was asked by a pageant judge: “Government surveillance is used to keep many nations and their people safe. But some believe this invades our right to privacy. What is more important to you, privacy or security?” She replied: “I believe that every country has their own government policy to keep us safe, and I believe that it shouldn’t cross a line of going into our privacy because we have a right to privacy. But security is also very important, so I believe that in order to live in a better society, we should also have the government look at that line – a middle ground as to where they can come and live together with society.”

Thai women have been in the final round several times, and our beauty queens have mostly answered questions that everyone thought was “hard” or “political”.

Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa was named Miss Universe 2019

But for ‎Miss Universe Thailand 2016 Chalita “Namtan” Suansane, the answer was easy and came from her heart. Faced with the question “Which current or former world leader do you admire? And why”, she replied at that time: “That person is the King [Rama IX]. Since I was born, His Highness has always worked. He has never complained and he likes the father of everyone in Thailand. Thank you.”

Miss Universe Thailand 2017 ‎Maria Poonlertlarp was asked: “What are the most important social movements of your day? And why?” She answered: “I think the most important social movement so far is that we’re having an ageing population. So the most important movement in our time is definitely the youth. The youth are our future. The youth are something we have to invest in.”

This time, many people couldn’t help but wonder whether the question put to Fahsai was part of a political science exam or a question for members of the House of Representatives. The public reaction is not surprising because of the coups in Thailand despite elections. Thai politics are monitored at every step as the people under a military government cannot express themselves thoroughly or freely.

‎Maria Poonlertlarp

The question was not a coincidence

A report titled “Freedom on the Net” by US-based NGO Freedom House, which scored 65 countries on Internet freedom and free expression online, ranked Thailand 48.

The report also said Internet freedom in Thailand seems to be heavily restricted since before the election as the Web is used to attack or discourage opponents. This was an election after more than five years following a coup, with the government snooping so much that the public lacked freedom of expression.

A report by the Human Rights Lawyers’ Association also revealed that since 2015 in Thailand, there has been a 68 per cent increase in SLAPP – or strategic lawsuit against public participation – cases, with most relating to “defamation”.

Approximately 95 per cent of SLAPP cases in Thailand have been against the general public – political activists, human rights defenders, volunteers, and journalists – with the main cause of litigation being commenting online.

Politically speaking

“I think the United States and the Philippines have always had a good relationship with each other,” Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach said in reply to a question at the pageant. “We were colonised by the Americans and we have their culture in our traditions even to this day. I think we’re very welcoming of the Americans and I don’t see any problem with that at all.”

Miss Universe 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach

Miss Universe 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach

Wurtzbach ’s answer is probably the most obvious confirmation of the beauty and political issue going hand in hand. In affect, she agreed to the setting up of a US military base in the Philippines, her home country. The answer led to her winning the Miss Universe crown, showing that questions on political issues are a measure of the “attitude” of citizens in that country.

In fact, questions dealing with politics have occurred since The Miss Thai Pageant of 1934, aimed at celebrating the constitution and disseminating democracy. Crowned winners had to carry out public relations duties for the government to create nationalism and become “female representatives” of the whole nation to build the country’s reputation.

However, independent scholar Pavin Chachavalpongpun analysed the question and answer at this year’s pageant from a different perspective: “The competition may need a beauty queen that is confident, clear, deciding and able to be a leader,” he said on Facebook. “Answering the question should clearly determine what you want to choose, security or privacy. It should be pointed out that privacy is one of the freedoms that the government needs to respect while security can be handled in other ways.”

Digital Economy and Society Minister Puttipong Punnakan gave an interview to the BBC on the question put to Fahsai. “Security ensures the safety of people,” he said. “It is the protection of the rights of people which should not be violated. And there is no law infringing on civil rights.” Puttipong argued that both security and privacy can go together in a state which does not violate privacy rights while also being able to take care of people’s security.

All beauty pageants will continue to have questions dealing with politics as politics is everywhere and part and parcel of our lives. It is important that it’s not just beauty queens who must be aware of security and privacy rights but also ordinary people like us.

Thailand fell short in their SEA Games mission, winning just 92 gold medals and will have to settle for third place behind Vietnam and overall winner Philippines as the curtain falls this evening on the 30th edition of the sporting event.

Medal Tally from 2019 SEA Games website

The 13-time champions set a target of 121 golds when they launched their campaign 11 days ago and will almost certainly finish outside the top two for the first time in 28 years. As of Tuesday (December 10), Thailand had won 92 golds, 103 silver and 122 bronze medals. Hosts Philippines is assured of placing first with 149 golds, while Vietnam will finish second with 97 golds .

Four sport teams merit praise for their successful harvest of medals in the tournament. The athletic squad won the highest number with 12 gold medals including the men’s and women’s 4×100 relay and men’s 200m.

Thumbs up too to the athletes in the judo, cycling and taekwondo events, as each contributed to seven golds including the brilliant taekwondo world champion Panipak Wongpattanakit in the women’s under-49kg category.

The boxing team featuring some big-names like Chatchai Decha Butdee in men’s bantamweight and Wuttichai Masuk in men’s welterweight hit their target of five gold medals while the Muay Thai team didn’t do badly and will return home with four golds.

Also impressive were Thai sailors as they captured four gold medals while the sepak takraw teams maintained their standard by winning all three events they entered.

As for the new Esports, Thailand showed positive signs by winning two disciplines including the Tekken 7 event by Thai favourite and engineering student Nopparut Hempamorn.

Nevertheless, there were some major flops in certain sports, for example on the football pitch where Thailand failed to win a gold for the first time in a decade.

The tennis team also returned home with no gold, a critical failure for a country which once reigned supreme in this sport in the region. The bowling team also failed to shine and the golfers, seen as one of the better medal prospects for the Thais, won just one gold for the men’s team.

In terms of Olympic disciplines, Thailand also won just 46 golds whereas the Philippines won 53 and Vietnam 55.

Kasikornbank is taking a cautious approach on loans to small and medium-sized enterprises in fear of rising bad debts, said senior executive vice president Wirawat Panthawangkun.

The bank’s credit growth to SMEs is forecast at a mere 1 per cent this year, compared to the year’s target of 2-4 per cent, resulting from a slowdown of the global economy, the US-China trade war and strengthening of the baht. The negative factors led to drops in sales and revenues in the first nine months of this year.

In the first three quarters, credit to SMEs grew 0.4 per cent year on year, with Bt664 billion in outstanding non-performing loans (NPL).

Wirawat was concerned that NPL level of SMEs might rise from the current 5 per cent to 6 per cent of its portfolio. SMEs in the agriculture and export businesses have been adversely affected by the economic deceleration and fast appreciation of the Thai currency.

To reduce exposure to bad loans, the bank has been careful in granting new loans, particularly for working capital and new investments to SMES, he said

“We have not seen an improvement in NPLs for a long time. They are still rising and might climb from 5 per cent to 6 per cent by the end of this year,” he said.

Other banks did not lend much to SMEs, he said, adding that Kasikornbank will also be careful in lending to new SME clients.

Growth in SME credit next year is expected to be flat, or about 1 to 2 per cent, due to weak consumers’ spending especially among farmers who have been hit by falling prices of farm products, drought and the strong baht, he said.

Next year, The bank will look into SMEs operating online trade and will apply big data to evaluate their business outlook and loan prospect.

Online trade is still growing and expected to continue expanding by over 10 per cent a year, he said.

The bank will also monitor companies involved in construction as they may benefit from the government’s infrastructure investments, Wirawat added.

AOT share price under pressure on risk of revenue-sharing scheme.

AOT share price under pressure on risk of revenue-sharing scheme.

The proposal by government that could force Airports of Thailand (AOT) to share its departing passenger fee with the Department of Airports caused AOT’s stock price to drop to Bt72.5 yesterday (December 9), the lowest in the last two months, before closing at Bt73, 2.99 per cent down from the previous day.

This year, the share price of AOT rose from Bt64.25 to a peak of Bt81.75.

Capital Nomura Securities views that the risk of such a policy being introduced would have a negative effect on AOT’s net profits and target prices next year, which could drop by 3-8 per cent and 3-6 per cent respectively.

Legal interpretation is pending at the government legal adviser, the State Council, will rule whether the AOT has to share part of its revenue with the Department of Airports as a contribution to the Department’s revolving fund.

However, if the government uses the Airports’ revolving fund efficiently, then the Thai airline industry will enjoy higher competitiveness, said Capital Nomura.

The results of the legal interpretation will have an impact on net profits and the target price of AOT shares.

If the government orders AOT to share 5 per cent of its revenues with the Department of Airports’ revolving fund, then it could send net profits and target price down by 3-4 per cent and 3 per cent respectively.

If the government forces the AOT to share 10 per cent of its revenue with the Department, it would cause net profits to go down by 6-8 per cent and lower the price of AOT shares by 6 per cent.

AOT’s total revenue in 2018/2019 was Bt64.5 billion, up 3.91 per cent from the previous year, but net profits dropped by 0.51per cent to Bt25.1 billion.

According to Investment Analysts Association (IAA ) consensus of 17 brokerage firms, analysts expected that AOT’s earning per share would be Bt2.04, a 14.9-per-cent rise next year, the average share price would be Bt83 based on 42 times price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) and the dividend is estimated to be 1.3 per cent.

Some SMEs can now seek urgent loans with TCG guarantee

The state-owned Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG) will for the first time provide direct guarantees to small and medium-size enterprises in urgent need of loans.

The TCG has prepared direct guarantees of Bt1.5 billion for these SMEs, TCG president Rak Vorrakitpokatorn said, adding that the service will begin later this month.

The direct guarantee is similar to a letter of guarantee to needy SMEs, which can hand it to banks to seek loans with TCG backup.

Currently, SMEs have to seek loans at banks first. If they do not have enough credit, the banks will advise them to seek TCG help.

TCG has already partnered with three banks in the initiative, Rak added.

The SMEs qualified for the direct guarantee must be ones that have been in operation for at least five years and reporting substantial revenue. Their balance sheets must report a positive financial status for a consecutive three years.

The TCG will provide guarantees not exceeding Bt40 million per SME.

The fee for the guarantee is between 2.5 per cent and 3 per cent of the total guaranteed loan.
