Indonesias Mount Semeru – at more than 12,000 feet, the tallest mountain on the nations most densely populated island of Java – erupted Saturday with an enormous cloud of chalky ash as people raced for safety. At least one person was killed.

That hot cloud barreled toward villages in the Lumajang district in East Java. Many residents fled on foot. Video shared by authorities and locals showed people shouting, running and recording damage to their homes and local infrastructure. The Lumajang deputy district chief said at least one person was killed, the Reuters news agency reported.

Some villages have been blanketed with ash – with two areas “badly affected,” disaster management authorities said on a live television broadcast, CNN reported.

The eruption occurred during a thunderstorm, causing rain to push around lava and hot debris. Mud engulfed a bridge connecting two main villages, Pronojiwo and Candipuro, the Associated Press reported.

“Thick columns of ash have turned several villages to darkness,” Thoriqul Haq, Lumajang district head, told TVOne. He said hundreds had to relocate to temporary shelters.

The National Disaster Management Agency tweeted that it immediately sent teams to the scene for data evaluation and evacuation.

Indonesia lies on the “Ring of Fire,” the 40,000-kilometer (24,900-mile) stretch along the Pacific Rim that traces boundaries between different tectonic plates and has an abundance of volcanoes and earthquakes.

Mount Semeru last erupted in January, with no recorded casualties.

The number of Covid-19 cases crossed 14.18 million across Southeast Asia, with 27,686 new cases reported on Saturday (December 4). New deaths are at 528, bringing accumulated Covid-19 deaths in Asean to 293,704.

In Singapore, two imported Covid-19 cases have preliminarily tested positive for the Omicron variant on Thursday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

Both cases were isolated upon arrival in Singapore on Wednesday, and had no interaction with anyone in the community.

“There is currently no evidence of any community transmission from these cases,” said MOH in a statement on Thursday.

In Philippines, all fully vaccinated Filipinos 18 years old and above are now eligible to receive Covid-19 booster shots, FDA Director-General Eric Domingo said on Wednesday.

He said the emergency use authorization (EUA) for Covid-19 boosters for them was approved on Monday “based on the assessment of benefit and risks, similar to US CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) recommendations.”

He added that the Department of Health would soon release the specific guidelines on boosters for the general population.

Building immunity with vaccines will make Covid-19 a seasonal affliction, says virologist

Covid-19 will become a seasonal disease once everybody has developed an immunity against the virus, expert virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan said in a Facebook post on Monday.

He said about 1,000 Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms and zero or deaths in single digits can be expected as it is not possible to completely eliminate the virus.

For instance, he said, influenza claims approximately 200 lives in Thailand every year, especially among patients with underlying diseases, the elderly, children, obese people and pregnant women.

Dr Yong added that children are given the flu vaccine and booster shots yearly to cut down on deaths.

“In the future, when everybody has developed an immunity to Covid-19, it will become a normal viral infection like influenza, which infects people during the rainy season from June to September and the cool season from January to March,” he said.

The Chulalongkorn University expert also advised people to get their Covid-19 shots as it is more beneficial than getting infected by the virus.

Though the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been detected in at least 38 countries, nobody has died from it, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.

However, WHO warned that the highly-infectious Omicron strain will affect the global economic recovery.

“The Omicron variant pushed the total number of Covid-19 infections in Africa above the 3 million level,” WHO said.

“It will take at least a week to identify how the Omicron variant spreads, if it can develop severe symptoms and the treatment efficacy plan in the long term.”

WHO also predicted that more than half of the Covid-19 patients in Europe will be infected with Omicron in the next two to three months.

A high-speed railway station near a horse ranch with a history of more than 2,000 years in northwest Chinas Gansu Province went into operation on Sunday.

Situated at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, the Shandan Horse Ranch station is located in Shandan County in the city of Zhangye along the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed railway line.

The expansion project of the station, which did not have passenger transport services before, started construction in March this year. A passenger terminal building covering an area of 1,080 square meters, two platforms and other facilities, were built as part of the project.

Eight trains, heading for several cities including Lanzhou, Xi’an and Urumqi, will now stop over at the station.

Yang Yifeng took the train eastward to Tianshui, Gansu, a trip of five and a half hours now.

“We used to take normal trains and then travel by bus from Tianshui to the horse ranch, with the journey lasting more than 10 hours. Now the trip is very convenient,” said Yang, one of the first batch of passengers.

Shandan Horse Ranch under the foot of the Qilian Mountains is one of the oldest horse ranches in the world. Horses have been raised here since the Han Dynasty (202 B.C.- A.D. 220), and the tradition of horse breeding has continued for thousands of years. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907) reign, the number of horses in Shandan exceeded 70,000.

In recent years, with great achievements in the ecological protection of the Qilian Mountains, Shandan Horse Ranch began to actively develop tourism.

Chen Jin, deputy head of Shandan County, said that with the opening of the station, tourists from all over the country can come to visit the ranch more easily via the high-speed railway.

It will provide important transportation support for environmental protection and the development of sustainable industries in the Qilian Mountains, Chen added.

Air quality in Greater Bangkok expected to hit unsafe level until Thursday: CAPM

https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009662

Air quality in Bangkok and surrounding areas are expected to hit unsafe levels from Monday to Thursday, the Centre for Air Pollution Mitigation (CAPM) said on Sunday.

On Monday, PM2.5 (particles less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter) readings were in the range of 24-52 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3), while air quality in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district hit unsafe level at 52 μg/m3.

Thailand’s standard for safe levels of PM2.5 is 50 μg/m3 or lower.

“People have been advised to refrain from burning garbage or weeds in an open space, use vehicles as necessary, take care of their health and follow the PM2.5 situation before going outdoor,” the centre said.

“Meanwhile, people in areas where PM2.5 pollution is bad have been advised to reduce time spent on outdoor activities and wear facemask. They should see a doctor if they have respiratory symptoms.”

The PM2.5 situation can be followed on Air4Thai.com and bangkokairquality.com websites, CAPM Facebook page, or via Air4Thai and AirBKK smartphone applications.
