Thaksin’s daughter top choice for PM in Central Thailand: survey

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2022

A recent opinion survey found that former PM Thaksin Shinawatra’s youngest daughter is the top choice among most voters in Thailand’s Central region.

The survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) found that Paetongtarn Shinawatra topped the list of preferred PM candidates, followed by Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrate and incumbent Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The telephone survey conducted from November 2 to 5 covered 2,002 respondents aged 18 and above. The respondents were sampled from 17 central provinces and results were announced on Sunday.

The response to who the most preferred prime minister candidate would be and why was:

• 24.18%: Paetongtarn because the country should be run by the new generation, Pheu Thai Party’s policies are great, and they have faith in the Shinawatra family.

• 16.73%: Pita because Move Forward Party’s policies are very good.

• 16.23%: Prayut as he is a man of integrity who brought peace to the country.

• 13.54%: Undecided

• 7.04%: Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, Seree Ruam Thai Party leader

• 6.19%: Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, Thai Sang Thai leader

• 3.10%: Korn Chatikavanij, Chart Pattana Kla Party leader

• 2.05%: Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Bhumjaithai Party leader

• 1.80%: Not interested/no comment

• 1.60%: Kanchana Silapa-archa, former Chart Thai Pattana leader

• 1.50%: Cholnan Srikaew, Pheu Thai leader.

The remaining 6.04 per cent was shared by several other politicians.

The survey also found that most voters in the Central region will vote for constituency-based candidates from Pheu Thai Party, with 32.42% choosing the party.

This was followed by Move Forward (19.98%), undecided (13.99%), Palang Pracharath (10.54%), and Democrat (7.54%). The remainder was shared among several other parties.

Pheu Thai continued to top the list as the most favourite party for party-list MPs, with 32.57% of respondents citing it.

It was followed by the Move Forward (19.83%), undecided (14.28%), Palang Pracharath (10.49%), and Democrat 7.14%. The rest of the respondents cited other parties.

Paetongtarn was also the top choice in other polls in the North, Northeast and nationwide, though she was beaten slightly in Bangkok and the South.

General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government is making great headway in pushing for Thailand to become a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing, former government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Saturday.

He said the country has attracted many big electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to set up EV plants and EV battery factories. These include BYD, which is China’s top EV maker, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, MG, GWM, and Volt.
Thanakorn said these carmakers have chosen Thailand as their production base for the domestic market as well as for other Southeast Asian and Asian countries.
Also, Thailand’s very own Energy Absolute (EA) has the region’s largest lithium battery factory in Chachoengsao province, he said.
Thanakorn, a party-list MP of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party, congratulated the prime minister on his government’s success in bringing “economic prosperity” to the country.
He also praised Prayut for his three-pillared strategy to drive Thailand forward — and developing the EV industry is one of them.

“Over the past eight years, Gen Prayut has taken Thailand and the Thai people to progress through his quick and serious work,” Thanakorn said.
He believes the prime minister is working silently for the country’s future and economic progress, “without resorting to political PR”.
Thanakorn also voiced confidence that Prayut would succeed if he sought another term in office, due to huge support from voters who trust him.
The former spokesman also asked opposition politicians to focus on working for the people instead of “playing old politics” and resorting to discrediting the government.
Thanakorn had to step down as spokesman for Prayut’s government in August when he became a party-list MP of the ruling party, replacing the office holder who quit the party and lost her MP seat.
In October, PM Prayut spelt out his three-pillared strategy aimed at boosting welfare, distributing wealth and putting the country on the right track. The strategy calls for the development of three key areas — the EV industry, infrastructure, and banking.
Prayut said the EV industry would grow to become one of the world’s largest and Thailand should join this trend now to capitalise on the wealth generated.
“If we succeed, it will set our country on a path to prosperity for another 20 to 30 years.”

Thailand to rethink ‘must have’ rule after World Cup broadcast chaos

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2022

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) plans to review its “must have” rule after approving a budget of 600 million baht to purchase rights to broadcast the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The “must have” rule, which dictates that World Cup matches must be broadcast for free across all platforms in Thailand, deterred private broadcasters from buying the rights.

With less than two weeks to go before the tournament kicks off on November 20, the NBTC finally stepped in on Wednesday to secure the broadcast rights with 600 million baht.

However, Fifa is demanding 1.6 billion baht for the broadcast rights, leaving the Sports Authority of Thailand scrambling to find the extra money before the opening match in eight days. Thai advertisers are also delaying their plans for the World Cup as they wait to see the outcome of negotiations for the rights.

Trairat Viriyasirikul, acting NBTC secretary-general, admitted on Friday that the “must have” rule will have to be revised as it is disrupting business operations.

He said it was not the NBTC’s duty to purchase World Cup rights every four years, adding that the problematic rule should be amended to reflect the proliferation of broadcast platforms in Thailand.

Trairat explained the National Sports Development Fund was authorised to buy broadcast rights for events at which Thai athletes compete, such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Southeast Asian Games, Asean Para Games, Asian Games and Asian Para Games.

However, the “must have” rule should not apply to the Fifa World Cup unless the Thailand national team is competing, he said.

The NBTC will sign over the 600 million baht to the Sports Authority of Thailand to purchase the World Cup rights on Monday.

Prayut presents 3 pillars for post-pandemic recovery in Asean

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2022

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha proposed three pillars to help build a resilient, sustainable Asean region in the post-pandemic era.

Prayut was speaking at the 2nd Asean Global Dialogue in Phnom Penh on Sunday. The first dialogue was held in Cambodia 10 years ago in 2012.

In his speech, Prayut complimented Cambodian PM Hun Sen for reviving the dialogue, so leaders and representatives of international organisations can exchange ideas on sustainable growth in the post-Covid-19 era, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said.

“The world is recovering gradually amid various challenges, so Asean should start working immediately to create a sustainable future for people,” Anucha said quoting Prayut.

He added that Prayut also presented three pillars to promote resilience and sustainability in the region:

• Promoting health and building a good social protection system to help people, especially the vulnerable, overcome crises.

• Applying the bio-circular-green (BCG) economy model to help the economy recover sustainably by utilising environmentally friendly technology and innovation.

• Promoting partnerships for development at all levels via the exchange of knowledge, technologies and innovation, as well as activities to boost potential and fundraising in fields that meet mutual interest.

WHO praises Anutin for backing its universal health initiative

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2022

The World Health Organisation (WHO)’s director-general recently wrote to Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul thanking him for supporting its universal health initiative.

Trasulee Traisoranakul, deputy government spokesperson, on Sunday released a copy of the November 4 letter from WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghrebreyesus to Anutin.

In the letter, the WHO chief thanks Anutin for “championing the Universal Health and Preparedness Review [UHPR]”.

The letter reads: “In April 2022, the Government of Thailand took the remarkable step to pilot the UHPR.

“Thailand thus became one of the first countries to pilot this game-changing initiative globally and the very first country in Southeast Asia.”

The WHO chief added that Thailand has been instrumental in the development of UHPR and its pilot programme serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to global health.

“The exercise highlighted some of Thailand’s critical assets: strong multisectoral coordination, universal health coverage based on robust primary health care; a vibrant community of public health leaders and dedicated workforce – all committed to saving lives and promoting health, and innovative approaches to advancing health promotion and addressing the commercial determinants of health through a tax on tobacco and alcohol sales,” the letter said.

Narathiwat’s famous salted Kulao fish will be among the many signature delicacies served up at the Apec Summit gala dinner on Thursday.

A menu along the “Sustainable Thai Gastronomy” theme has been specially designed for the gala, which will be hosted at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall in Bangkok.

Deputy government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said on Sunday that the salted fish – a signature delicacy from the Tak Bai district – has been dubbed the “king of salted fish” due to its mellow texture and unique aroma.

This delicacy has also been registered as a “geographical indication goods” by the Department of Intellectual Property.

“Tak Bai’s signature salted Kulao fish, which goes for between 1,300 and 1,500 baht, is often bought by travellers as a souvenir,” she said.

Rachada added that the authorities are promoting the seafood processing industry to create jobs and generate income for locals in the South.

“The Orang Pantai Community Enterprise’s salted fish has earned a name for itself thanks to the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre’s support in providing land and funds,” she said.

The spokesperson added that the gala dinner aims to highlight Thailand’s potential as the “world’s kitchen”.

Apart from salted Kulao fish, the menu will also include caviar from the Doi Inthanon Royal Project, Pone Yang Kham beef from Sakon Nakhon and wine from Korat.

“This is the perfect opportunity to promote the soft power of Thailand’s cuisine and its plentiful resources,” she said, as she called on Thais to be good hosts during the Apec Summit.

Tanee Sangrat: APEC 2022 will focus on ‘Bangkok Goals on BCG Economy’ to tackle environmental and economic challenges. It is hoped that the summit will result in common declarations contributing to global economic recovery.

APEC 2022: ‘Thailand needs to maintain a fine balance’

With APEC 2022 less than 24 hours away, Thailand’s new Ambassador to the US and former Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tanee Sangrat talks to The Nation about the Kingdom’s readiness as the host and the summit’s “Open. Connect. Balance” theme.

When asked how Thailand will handle the different opinions among member countries about ongoing world affairs like the Russia-Ukraine war, tensions between world powers, energy crisis and disruption of supply chains, Tanee said many of the conflicts were happening outside the APEC purview.

He said these issues were not directly related to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and as a host, Thailand will try to maintain a balance, even though tensions may prevent the finalisation of some pacts or may block consensus on some agreements.

When asked what Thailand will do to balance this, Tanee said: “When it comes to documents and negotiations and conversations about them within APEC, we may have to issue a statement from the chair instead of a joint statement for some of them.”

The newly appointed envoy also said he hopes the summit will help open the path to global recovery in the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting economic slowdown.

“The APEC meetings are very important, as this will also be a pivotal moment for the economies in Asia-Pacific and the world to address the environmental challenges the planet faces,” Tanee said. “Unlike in the past, this year we have addressed the problem quite squarely and come up with some solutions that will be worked upon as part of the ‘Bangkok Goals in BCG economy’.”

The BCG (bio-circular-green) economic model was devised by the Thai government to tackle climate change sustainably.

“I think what we discuss and our conversations within the APEC Summit, and the very fact that this year’s summit focuses on the ‘BCG economy’ means we are committed to a sustainable economic recovery,” he said.

Tanee added that the summit will also make the public aware of the importance of transitioning into a sustainable economy, and to achieve this, every sector will have to work together.

“We have no time to lose in terms of controlling greenhouse gases and carbon emissions. Thailand has to play a key part, and we cannot just rely on the government to set goals,” he said. “Companies, people in the economic sector, households, offices … we all have to work together for these common goals.”

The PCD received a total of 527 complaints of foul odours during the period, followed by complaints of dust and smoke (315) and loud noise (215), its director general Pinsak Suraswadi said on Sunday.

“The highest number of pollution complaints were filed in Bangkok, with 189, followed by Samut Prakan with 54 and Samut Sakhon with 44,” he said.

He said 41% of the accusations were made against industrial factories and 33% against other businesses.

The majority of complaints were lodged by telephone (39%) followed by the department’s website (26%) and its social media (21%).

He said 80.2% of complainants were “very satisfied” with how PCD officials responded to their complaints, either by providing information and or solving the problem.
