Pfizer and German biotechnology firm BioNTech SE on Tuesday released results from a Phase 2/3 trial showing a favourable safety profile and robust neutralising antibody responses in children aged five to 11 using a two-dose regimen of 10µg (microgram) administered 21 days apart. This dose is smaller than the 30µg used for children above 12.

The antibody responses in participants given 10µg doses were comparable to those recorded in a previous Pfizer-BioNTech study in people aged 16 to 25 who were given 30µg doses. The 10µg dose was carefully selected as the preferred dose for safety, tolerability and immunogenicity in children aged between five and 11. These are the first results from a pivotal trial of a Covid-19 vaccine in this age group.

“Over the past nine months, hundreds of millions of people aged 12 and older from around the world have received our Covid-19 vaccine. We are eager to extend the protection afforded by the vaccine to this younger population, subject to regulatory authorisation, especially as we track the spread of the Delta variant and the substantial threat it poses to children,” said Albert Bourla, chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer. “Since July, paediatric cases of Covid-19 have risen by about 240 per cent in the US – underscoring the need for vaccination. These trial results provide a strong foundation for seeking authorisation of our vaccine for children aged five to 11, and we plan to submit them to the FDA and other regulators with urgency.”

“We are pleased to be able to submit data to regulatory authorities for this group of school-aged children before the start of the winter season,” said Dr Ugur Sahin, CEO and co-founder of BioNTech. “The safety profile and immunogenicity data in children aged five to 11 years vaccinated at a lower dose are consistent with those we have observed with our vaccine in other older populations at a higher dose.”

The data summarised from this Phase 2/3 study, which is enrolling children six months to 11 years of age, was for 2,268 participants aged between five and 11 who received a 10µg dose level in a two-dose regimen.

In the trial, the SARS-CoV-2–neutralising antibody geometric mean titer (GMT) was 1,197.6 (95 per cent confidence interval [CI: 1106.1, 1296.6]), demonstrating a strong immune response in this group of children one month after the second dose.

This compares well (was non-inferior) to the GMT of 1146.5 (95 per cent CI: 1045.5, 1257.2) from participants aged 16 to 25, used as the control group for this analysis and who were administered a two-dose regimen of 30µg.

Further, the Covid-19 vaccine was well tolerated, with side effects generally comparable to those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age.

Pfizer and BioNTech plan to share this data with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Medicines Agency (EMA) and other regulators as soon as possible.

For the United States, the companies expect to include the data in a near-term submission for Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) as they continue to accumulate the safety and efficacy data required to file for full FDA approval in this age group.

A request to the EMA to update the EU Conditional Marketing Authorisation is also planned. Topline readouts for the other two groups from the trial – children two to five years of age and children six months to two years old – are expected as soon as the fourth quarter of this year.

Pfizer and BioNTech plan to submit data from the full Phase 3 trial for scientific peer-reviewed publication.

Police nabbed 10 out of some 100 gamblers during a raid on a cockfighting stadium in Phatthalung’s Muang district on Monday.

Officers also confiscated cocks, cash and equipment as evidence.

Meanwhile, those arrested were charged with gambling illegally and participating in activities that can spread Covid-19.

The Foundation for Consumers on Monday urged the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to check and punish telecommunication companies that allow online gambling and loan websites to lure consumers to use their service.

Narumon Mekborisut, head of the foundation’s consumer rights protection, said many consumers were affected by online gambling and loan websites’ moves, such as sending SMS and making automated phone calls.

She said victims may lose their personal information and cash due to the websites’ move, adding that none of the concerned agencies had tackled the issue until now.

“Hence, the foundation would like to urge the NBTC to check and punish telecommunication companies that allow online gambling and loan websites to lure consumers as it is a personal rights infringement,” she said.

OnlyFans star Kai Nao (rotten egg) and her boyfriend were arrested in Samut Prakan province for allegedly producing sex videos and selling them on the platform.

OnlyFans is an internet content subscription service, through which content creators can earn money from users who subscribe to their content, or so called “fan”. Sexual content among others is popular on the platform.

Suthanya Nakhonchinda, 19, known among her fans as Kai Nao, had been called by the police on September 17 for questioning about her participation in the platform.

Police concluded that Kai Nao’s action was a violation of the Computer Crime Act, as well as the criminal law for allegedly persuading others to engage in inappropriate sexual activity, since the OnlyFans star had talked about her income via a YouTube video before.

On Monday night, Kai Nao was arrested along with her boyfriend Korakot Sarirat, 20, at a motel in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district.

Police had secured an arrest warrant from Samut Prakan’s provincial court.

Meanwhile, social media users reacted with anger. Some said the police demanded a share in what Kai Nao and her boyfriend had earned.

The authorities said on Monday that parents can opt for their children to receive an inactivated Covid-19 jab instead of the mRNA Pfizer vaccine.

Deputy government spokesperson Trisulee Trisaranakul said children are scheduled to get a Pfizer jab in the first phase and inactivated vaccines in later phases. However, she said, parents can opt for their children to get an inactivated vaccine in the first phase if they want.

The government aims to have 4.5 million students aged 12 to 17 inoculated with the Pfizer vaccine if permitted by parents.

Trisulee pointed out that the jab cannot provide full immunity against the virus but can prevent serious illness and death. People are advised to continue following public health measures despite receiving both shots.

She added that students don’t need to be vaccinated before schools reopen, but it is advised for safety reasons.

Thailand’s daily new cases over the past 24 hours on Tuesday fell to 10,919, though deaths rose slightly to 143 deaths. Of the new cases, 422 were in prisons.

Meanwhile, 11,694 people have recovered and been discharged over the past 24 hours.

Thailand’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,500,105 – 1,352,838 of whom have recovered, 131,655 are still in hospitals and 15,612 have died.

Separately, another 198,505 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 270,056 their second shot and 491 a booster shot, bringing total Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 45,211,101.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 229.84 million on Tuesday, 206.52 million of whom have recovered, 18.61 million are active cases (98,711 in severe condition) and 4.71 million have died (up by 5,675).
