Mini-bonsai: Delicate, with a powerful presence

Mini-bonsai: Delicate, with a powerful presence

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

Many people consider bonsai to be an art form only for experts. However, there is a palm-sized type that grows up to 20 centimetres tall and is much easier to care for due to its small size.

Called shohin-bonsai, or mini-bonsai, the plants still convey the delicate, powerful presence of bonsai that is so widely admired. Having a mini-bonsai is an easy way to enrich one’s home.

“There are no fixed rules for bonsai,” said Sachiko Uchida, a bonsai artist who runs the Reijuen bonsai garden in Yokohama’s Naka Ward. “There are many small and lovely mini-bonsai plants. I hope people will enjoy them freely.”

Hailing from Kanagawa Prefecture, Uchida was born in 1975. After training in shohin-bonsai at a bonsai garden in the prefecture, she opened up her own place, Reijuen, in 2021.

She also sells bonsai and holds workshops, including teaching at Yomiuri Culture, which provides cultural and educational courses.

Mini-bonsai are broadly classified into two categories: the shohaku type comprising trees such as pines and cedars, and the zoki miscellaneous type comprising other plants.

The shohaku type is regarded as a typical bonsai. People admire their intriguing appearances while thinking about their respective histories, such as how the bent branches and withered spots came about.

Uchida has a black pine that she curved at its base when it was young, and she has bent it further over the years. You can sense the life force of the tree as you gaze at it.

The zoki miscellaneous type comprises plants that are a pleasure to look at because they, for example, bear fruit and bloom, or their leaves change colour in autumn.

Royagaki (diamond-leaf persimmon) is an ornamental persimmon tree. Its orange-coloured berries are as small as a thumbnail. They grow in clusters and are quite cute.

“Zoki trees change in appearance throughout the year,” Uchida said. “Via [a living thing] in a small pot, you feel the passage of time.”

Bonsai differ from ordinary plants because they are pruned and trained to have a beautiful shape from early in their development, altering their natural growth. Other notable points include the moss that grows at the base of the plant and the pot it is set in.

Mini-bonsai are sold at bonsai gardens and other places, starting at about ¥2,000 ( THB 521 ) .

They are usually grown outdoors under the same conditions as in nature.

“The small plants can be placed on a balcony that gets sunshine, and you don’t have to think too hard about how to grow them,” Uchida said.

Trimming bonsai with tweezers when needles and leaves become discoloured builds attachment to the plant.

“If you have any questions, ask the bonsai garden where you purchased the plant.” Uchida said. “I want people to have fun with bonsai.”

Greening made easy

An easier way to bring nature into your living space than having a small bonsai is to create a koke bokkuri, a pine cone with moss growing between its scales.

To make a koke bokkuri, first wash and thoroughly dry a pine cone. Fill the space between the scales with clay-like soil called keto-tsuchi, and then attach moss clumps one by one to the soil using tweezers. Placing a small seedling with the moss makes for a cute arrangement.

Koke bokkuri are attracting attention recently as enthusiasts post images of their creations on social media. “As it doesn’t have much space for holding soil, the plant tends to weaken. If that happens, put the pine cone in a pot, and it will revive,” Uchida said.

Now that Thailand has opened up to foreign tourists, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts is jumping on the bandwagon by offering a new attraction in Bangkok – the Siam Yacht Club.

Michael Schlueter, general manager of Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel and Tower, told the press earlier this week that the aim is to turn Siam Yacht Club into a signature brand of the hotel.

With its unique menu and drinks created by master chefs and mixologists, as well as an astounding view of the Chao Phraya River, Schlueter reckons the Siam Yacht Club will soon become a key Bangkok attraction. He said it will also serve as a new gathering place for like-minded Bangkokians.

The restaurant, which is set to open in January, has proved to be popular since its soft launch this month, with most tables being reserved daily.

Schlueter said he believes 2023 will be very promising for the tourism and hotel industry, especially with more Indian and Saudi Arabian tourists arriving.

“Siam Yacht Club is a new place to provoke all the senses. It is what it says here: Get ready for a culinary and social experience like no other in Bangkok,” Schlueter said.

Sheraton Hotels & Resorts is part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of hotels in metropolises worldwide.

Siam Yacht Club is part of Sheraton’s new aim to offer everything from public space and food and beverage to flexible meeting spaces.

The restaurant is being opened in time to meet a surge in foreign tourists, especially now that China has decided to lift all travel restrictions and reopen its borders.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand believes Thailand will see more than 18 million tourists next year, generating some 970 billion baht in revenue. This estimate was declared before China announced it was lifting travel restrictions.

Nation Group (Thailand) Plc’s board of directors has approved a rights offering of 10,847,920,965 shares at 0.53 baht each, the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) was informed on Friday.

Nation Group is aiming to raise at least 730 million baht from this capital increase, to be used as a revolving fund supporting future business expansion under the One Nation strategy.

The acquisition of Thansettakij secures Nation Group’s ownership of TMM’s print and online media, TV programmes, and events and seminars business.

Nation Group CEO Shine Bunnag said the board approved the capital increase and purchase of Thansettakij’s shares to strengthen the media group, as Thansettakij is acknowledged as a leading media entity in the country.

At least 5 killed, 37 injured in S Korean expressway fire

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

At least five people died and 37 people were injured as of 5 p.m. Thursday as a fire engulfed a soundproof tunnel on a highway in Gwacheon, southern Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday afternoon.

President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered the Interior Ministry and Health Ministry to conduct a thorough search at the scene of the incident to prevent more deaths. He also ordered an all-out inspection of the road structures like sound barriers to check whether the materials used are fire-prone, in a move to prevent the fire from repeating, according to a presidential office spokesperson.

Fire authorities earlier revealed that six were found dead, but later made a correction regarding the death toll.

The incident was first reported to the fire authorities at 1:49 p.m. on the eastbound Second Gyeongin Expressway near North Uiwang Interchange. Over 200 calls followed.

The fire gutted the hundreds of meters-long tunnel-shaped structure, covering a bridge that traverses an industrial complex called the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town.

Forty-four cars were trapped under the structure along the road when the fire broke out, causing drivers to get out of their cars and run from the fire.

The crack of fire started with the collision of a cargo truck and a bus, which soon spread to the sound barrier.

Casualties include bus passengers. Among the injured, three are reported to be in critical condition with facial burns. The remaining 34 suffered minor injuries from inhaling toxic gas.

Fire authorities issued a second-stage emergency response order at 2:22 p.m. to mobilize firefighting apparatus from up to 14 fire stations, 10 minutes after the milder first-stage order was in place. So far, 94 apparatus including fire trucks were dispatched to the scene of the disaster with 219 firefighters.

Fire authorities said they damped down the flames at 3:18 p.m, and extinguished the fire at 4:12 p.m.

The fire department is also looking further into the degree of the damage and the cause of the fire.

Police mobilized over 240 police officers to block traffic from both directions near the site on the expressway connecting Yeongjongdo Island in Incheon and SeongnamGyeonggi Province, following the deadly incident. Police and Gwacheon Metropolitan Government public servants also blocked cars from accessing the road under the bridge within a one-kilometre range due to objects falling from the fire on the bridge.

Trump tax returns to be released by US House panel on Friday

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

Former Republican President Donald Trump’s redacted tax returns will be made public on Friday, a spokesperson for the US House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee said on Thursday.

The Democratic-controlled committee obtained the returns last month as part of an investigation into Trump’s taxes, after a lengthy court battle that ended with the US Supreme Court ruling in the committee’s favour.

The committee released a report on its findings last week, which said the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) broke its own rules by not auditing Trump for three of the four years of his presidency.

The documents to be released on Friday are expected to include Trump’s tax returns filed between 2015 and 2021, the years he ran for and served as president.

A spokesperson for Trump declined to comment.

Trump’s tax returns were not released alongside last week’s report because they contained sensitive information that had to be redacted before publication, committee members said.

Democrats on the committee said making the returns public was necessary to understand the context of its report, which also included legislation that would mandate the IRS to audit presidents.

Trump was the first presidential candidate in decades not to release his tax returns during either of his campaigns for president.

Democrats on the committee had only a few weeks to decide how to handle the returns once they got them before Republicans retake control of the US House in January after winning a narrow margin of victory in November’s midterm elections.

Bicycle trend in Japan boosts demand for parking solutions

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

In September, Katsushika Ward in Tokyo opened a new bicycle parking lot that can accommodate over 400 bicycles in an underground facility that resembles the set of a sci-fi movie.

The number of cyclists has surged amid the Covid-19 pandemic, increasing demand for bicycle parking lots in city centres.

Located a five-minute walk away from JR Shin-Koiwa StationKatsushika Ward’s new parking lot features an automated loading system: All users have to do is set their bikes in the right position and push a button, after which the system whisks the bicycles into the subterranean storage space.

Giken Ltd., the developer of the parking lot, has installed underground facilities at 14 locations in Tokyo. The Koichi-based company said it has seen a surge in demand for its parking lots, especially in central Tokyo where it is difficult to secure land near stations.

Municipalities also hope the facilities will deter people from leaving bicycles on sidewalks near stations.

An innovative measure adopted to deter on-street parking includes trick art warning signs, which the municipality of Hachioji in Tokyo installed in March of last year in cooperation with engineering students from Takushoku University. Sang Anakot Thai and Thai Sang Thai announce electoral alliance

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

Two new parties led by veteran politicians on Thursday announced their alliance in a bid to return to the political arena in the next general election.

The Sang Anakot Thai Party and Thai Sang Thai Party held a joint press conference at 10am on Thursday to announce the alliance.

On Wednesday, the two parties had told reporters that they would hold discussions on Thursday, leading to speculation that the two parties would announce a merger.

The Thai Sang Thai was formed Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, a former core member of the Pheu Thai Party, while the Sang Anakot Thai was set up by Uttama Saowanayon and Sontirat Sontijirawong, two founders of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP).

Uttama, now the leader of Sang Anakot Thai, and Sontirat, party secretary-general, had left the PPRP after they were sidelined by the faction that is loyal to PPRP leader General Prawit Wongsuwan.

Speaking at the press conference on Thursday, Sudarat said she used to work in politics with Somkid Jatusripitak, chief strategist of Sang Anakot Thai, for several years in the former Thai Rak Thai governments.

Sudarat said both she and Somkid had long political experience and both agreed that if Thailand was left with the current problems, it would be hard for the new generations.

Sang Anakot Thai and Thai Sang Thai announce electoral allianceShe said her party had decided to become an ally of the Sang Anakot Thai to find solutions for the country.

She said the two allies will exchange ideas to find solutions so that the country would be able to move forward.

Speaking at the same press conference, Somkid said he has been working in politics for almost 20 years and he has never seen “the worst situation” like what was happening now.

“Political parties are fighting for candidates openly at a magnitude that has never happened. MPs resigned and switched parties every day. The government, meanwhile, cannot tackle the people’s economic hardship,” Somkid said.

“In my eyes, Khunying Sudarat is a democratic fighter. I regard her as my younger sister, who is very strong. She works hard and is a good mum and wife who devotes herself for the country,” Somkid said.

Somkid declined to talk about the possibility of him being nominated as a prime minister candidate but said he would regard it as god’s gift if he does become the prime minister one day.
