Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand together with Diabetes Association of Thailand, increase access to diabetes – Education to protect tomorrow
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022
Bangkok, November 14 — Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand Co., Ltd. attends the Walk Rally: Access to Diabetes Care of 2022 World Diabetes Day, which is marked November 14 of every year, hosted by the Diabetes Association of Thailand, at the Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park in Bangkok on the previous Sunday, November 13, 2022.
The company aims to emphasize and promote the important of educating public on right knowledges of diabetes as well as to improve and promote better health for diabetes patients and public at large through various activities including exercise games.
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases as well as a major problem for global public health. Recently, the burden of diabetes has intensified as 537 million people are living with diabetes worldwide, and it is estimated that by 2045, more than 700 million people will be living with diabetes worldwide.
From the statistics of the year 2021 disclosed by the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand has registered 3.2 million people living with diabetes in national healthcare system. This is an increase of about 300,000 new cases per year, causing an average loss of healthcare costs of 47,596 million baht per year. In addition, diabetes is also leading cause of many other diseases such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and kidney disease, etc.
Mr. Enrico Cañal Bruland, Vice President and General Manager, Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand revealed – “One thing we should always be aware of is the Rule of Halves. Looking at the number of people living with diabetes, out of the 100, only half, meaning 50, have been diagnosed. Beyond the national registration, the number of patients with diabetes is likely more than double. Looking to those 50 people diagnosed with diabetes, only 25 have access the proper treatment, and only about 13 achieve the treatment goals. Meaning almost 90% of people living with diabetes are not well controlled. Without working together to change diabetes, we will experience significant more complications for people living with diabetes as well as healthcare expenses. The direct impact to the public and society requires us raising awareness of diabetes and its risk factors, which is one of the main objectives of this health campaign.”
Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand emphasizes on driving change as well as raising awareness to prevent and adequately treat diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has set the topic Access to Diabetes Care for the 2021-2023 campaign and this year the focus is on – Education to protect tomorrow. Hence, we feel the need to raise awareness about exercise for people living with diabetes and the public. Healthy living including exercise provides benefits for people with diabetes including weight management, improving blood sugar levels, and lowering the risk of heart diseases.
“Supporting this event on World Diabetes Day is one of our key activities, especially this year, as we are starting to count our steps towards celebrating 100 years of innovation with Novo Nordisk. It represents our long journey in the fight against diabetes and improving lives for people with diabetes, starting with insulin almost 100 years ago. As the world leader in diabetes care, we will continue to focus on providing quality products, enhancing access to treatment for the people as well as innovating the ways to improve quality of life of patients.
People with diabetes notably benefit from regular physical activities. It’s important for them to get in some proper physical activities. At our booth, we have exercise games. Participants not only enjoy themselves without feeling any added pressure, but their interactions and relationship with people, caregivers, and family members are strengthened as a result” Mr. Enrico Cañal Bruland added.

‘Apec For Her’ TikTok contest puts women’s empowerment in spotlight
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022
Nongluck Ajanapanya
A short clip contest highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment during this week’s Thailand-hosted Apec summit in Bangkok on Tuesday.
The “Apec For Her” contest, a collaboration between TikTok and Thailand’s Foreign Ministry, is aimed at raising awareness of women’s roles in boosting economic growth around the world, said TikTok head of public policy Chanida Klyphun.
Apec prioritises women’s empowerment in a bid to create an equitable, inclusive and diverse economy, said Chanida, who was speaking at the awards for clips shortlisted in the contest.
“The ‘Apec For Her’ contest invited Thai women to share their stories in order to inspire women worldwide that they have limitless potential to succeed in their own unique way,” she added.
Participants can choose to share the story of the most powerful woman in their lives, their own positive story, or their favourite moments with their significant woman, according to Chanida.
More than 200 clips were submitted for the contest before the October 31 deadline. The clips with the most views on TikTok were chosen for the shortlist. The winner was then determined by a panel of Foreign Ministry officials.
Foreign ministry officials, Tik Tok agents, and their partners pose for photos with one of the prizes, an electric motorcycle.
Chanida said the key criteria for contestants was to create positive inspiration for other women.
“Some are single mothers, some work in very masculine occupations, while others devote their time to supporting their husband and children,” Chanida explained. “But all of their stories are very impressive.”
The first prize goes to Ratchanok Thepkhun, who overcame many insults to become a professional foreman, as everyone acknowledges.
Ratchanok’s feel-good video, according to Chanida, is uplifting women all over the world and reminding them of their unlimited female potential.
She stated that all of the clips in the project can be viewed on the TikTok app.
Currently, the #apecforher clips have been viewed by over 8 million people worldwide.
Administrative Court accepts lawsuit against NBTC over True-DTAC merger
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022
The Central Administrative Court has accepted a lawsuit filed by the Thailand Consumers Council (TCC) against the telecom watchdog seeking to block the merger between two telecom giants.
The court announced on its website that it made a decision on November 10 to accept the lawsuit of the TCC against the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and NBTC Office for a judicial review.
But the court initially refused to issue a stay on the merger between True Corporation and Total Access Communication (DTAC) as sought by the TCC.
The court reasoned that it would wait for True and DTAC to file a counter-suit against the TCC plea before making a decision on issuing an injunction.
The court explained that True and DTAC are parties that can be affected by the trial so it would have to listen to accounts of the two companies before it would make a decision on the request for an injunction.
The court said it had held a meeting on November 11 and appointed the advocacy judge in charge of the case.
In the suit, the TCC alleged that the NBTC and the NBTC Office had violated the telecom law and issued unlawful administrative orders related to the NBTC’s decision to acknowledge the True-DTAC merger on October 20.
The suit claimed the decision would affect users of over 118 million mobile phone numbers, including 60 million numbers of True and DTAC, and the NBTC had failed to listen to opinions of the users before making the decision.
The suit alleged that the decision was made without taking into account the findings of a foreign advisory firm hired by the NBTC Office to study the pros and cons of the merger.
It also alleged that the chairman of the NBTC had violated the NBTC meeting regulation by casting a vote to break the a 2-2 tie. One NBTC member had abstained.
The lawsuit also alleged that the NBTC’s decision violated its own directives on telecom firms’ merger and violated its charter that requires the watchdog to prevent monopoly and unfair trade practices in the telecom industry.
All eyes on MORE shares this week after suspension for irregular trading practices
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022
Investors and traders are keeping an eye on More Return Plc (MORE) after the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) suspended trading in the stock until Friday.
On Thursday (November 10), investors were shocked when MORE’s share value hit the floor at 1.95 baht from 2.9 baht a share.
There was plenty of speculation at the time, but the company informed the SET that there was no justification for the steep drop in the stock price.
On Friday, the SET released a statement warning investors to be cautious about MORE as the stock was falling continuously. MORE closed the day at 1.34.
The company said it had suffered a loss of 6.83 million baht in the third quarter of 2022 compared to a net profit of 89.48 million baht in the same period last year. The company recorded a net profit of 22.15 million baht in the first nine months of this year compared to 111.27 million baht in the same period last year.
Over the weekend, there was speculation that a major shareholder may have used a nominee to buy MORE stocks with a margin account (in which the broker/dealer lends the investor cash) of 4.5 billion baht.
This was later confirmed at a press conference on Monday, with the SET and the Association of Securities Companies announcing the suspension.
On Monday, the SET suspended trading in MORE stocks after it noticed irregular trading practices. It also sought help from the Central Investigation Bureau.
On Monday, the company’s largest shareholder, Ummarit Klomchitcharoen, said he had not sold any of the 1.5 billion shares he holds in the company.
However, the fourth largest stakeholder, Apimuk Bamrungwong, told Bangkokbiz that he was shocked when he learned that the team handling his portfolio had bought about 3-billion baht worth of MORE shares.
He said his team had sent purchase orders to 11 brokers and had already paid about 100 million baht.
He said his lawyer would contact AMLO even though the office had not contacted him yet.
On Tuesday, SET announced the suspension of trading until Friday.
Analysis
According to a Bangkokbiz analysis, MORE’s shares were first listed in the SET at 0.3 baht a share after which it peaked at 2.98 baht. However, there were fears of speculation as the company’s performance did not justify the rising share value.
MORE has recorded net losses continuously , except in 2021, when the company booked a net profit of 1.16 billion baht thanks to debt restructuring and the sale of assets.
Bangkokbiz said the value of MORE’s shares had risen gradually until Thursday, when there was a purchase order for about 1.5 billion shares at the opening price of 2.98 baht.
The move raised questions, especially since the shares on Wednesday had closed at 2.78 baht.
Bangkokbiz analysis found the purchase order to be abnormal and questioned who the buyer and seller could be.
The agency speculated that a large shareholder might order one person to open portfolios with almost 20 brokers in a bid to sell for a large amount of money.
Moreover, the stock clearing was scheduled for Monday and brokers would be responsible if the buyer could not pay.
The agency speculated that the objective was likely to use brokers’ money for the stocks, which could have resulted in several brokers going bankrupt if the transaction had gone for clearing.

Blast kills two in eastern Poland as Russian missiles batter neighbouring Ukraine
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022
Two people died in an explosion in a Polish village near the border with Ukraine on Tuesday, firefighters said, with the United States and western allies saying they were investigating unconfirmed reports the blast was caused by stray Russian missiles.
The explosion occurred after Russia hammered cities across Ukraine with missiles on Tuesday, attacks that Kyiv said were the heaviest wave of missile strikes nearly nine months into its invasion of its neighbour. Some hit the western city of Lviv, less than 80km from the border with Poland.
The explosion was in Przewodow, a village in eastern Poland about 6km from the border with Ukraine, firefighters said. Media reports said the strike hit a grain-drying facility.
Poland is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) Western military alliance. Members of Nato are committed to collective defence, so a Russian strike on Poland could risk widening the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began with Moscow’s invasion in February.
A Nato official said the alliance was looking into the report and was closely coordinating with Poland.
Germany and Canada said they were monitoring the situation, and the European Union, the Netherlands and Norway said they were seeking more details. French President Emmanuel Macron ordered a verification effort.
Fabrice Pothier, former head of policy planning in the Nato secretary-general’s office, told Sky TV that it was too early to say whether the possible strike was intentional or accidental.
But the events were enough to trigger Nato’s Article 4 under which Poland would call a Nato meeting “to consult each other, to assess the threat and to take concrete action”, Pothier said. Nato ambassadors were due to hold a regular weekly meeting on Wednesday.
The Associated Press earlier cited a senior US intelligence official as saying the blast was due to Russian missiles having crossed into Poland.
Russia’s defence ministry said no strikes occurred against targets near the Ukrainian-Polish border that had been carried out by Russian weapons, IFX news agency reported.
In Washington, the Pentagon said it could not confirm Russian missiles had landed on Polish territory.
“We are aware of the press reports alleging that two Russian missiles have struck a location inside Poland near the Ukraine border. I can tell you that we don’t have any information at this time to corroborate those reports and are looking into this further,” Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called an urgent meeting of a government committee for national security and defence affairs on Tuesday night, Nato spokesman Piotr Muller said on Twitter.
Polish Radio ZET reported that two stray missiles hit Przewodow, killing two people, without elaborating.
“Firefighters are on the spot, it’s not clear what has happened,” said Lukasz Kucy, an officer on duty at a nearby firefighters’ post.
Air raid sirens blared and explosions rang out in nearly a dozen major Ukrainian cities, echoing a pattern in recent weeks of Moscow lashing out far from the front after losses on the battlefield, most recently the major southern city of Kherson.
Russia had launched 110 missiles and 10 Iranian-made attack drones into Ukraine by early evening, Ukraine’s armed forces general staff said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the main target of the missile flurry was energy infrastructure, as before.
“It’s clear what the enemy wants. He will not achieve this,” he said in a video address on the Telegram messaging app. The capital Kyiv has said such strikes only stiffen its resolve to repel Russian forces that invaded in February.
In Kyiv, flames funnelled out of a five-storey apartment block after being hit by what residents said appeared to be shot-down pieces of missile. The emergency service said one person was confirmed killed and another injured. Kyiv’s mayor said half the capital was left without electricity.
Other strikes or explosions were reported in cities ranging from Lviv and Zhytomyr in the west to Kryvy Rih in the south and Kharkiv in the east. Regional officials reported that some of the attacks had knocked out electricity, water and heating.
The attacks had left millions of Ukrainians without energy in 16 of the country’s 24 regions including Kyiv, said the United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) said.
“The damage to civilian infrastructure comes at a critical time when the temperature is dropping below zero, raising concerns about a serious humanitarian crisis during the harsh Ukrainian winter if people are unable to heat their homes.”
Just four days ago, Russian troops abandoned Kherson city in the south, the only regional capital Moscow had captured since its invasion, and six weeks after President Vladimir Putin declared it an eternal part of Russia.
Moscow had said last week its troops would occupy positions easier to defend on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River that bisects Ukraine. But video images filmed in the town of Oleshky, across a collapsed bridge from Kherson, appeared to show Russian forces had vacated their bunkers there too.
Further east, Russian-installed administrators said they were pulling civil servants out of Kherson province’s second biggest city, Nova Kakhovka, on the river bank next to a huge, strategic dam.
Natalya Humenyuk, a Ukrainian military spokesman, said Moscow seemed to be repositioning troops and artillery 15-20km further from the Dnipro, to protect its guns from Ukrainian counter-strikes.
Russia had artillery still capable of striking Kherson from those new positions, but “we also have something to answer with”, she said.
