Disney Shang-Chi breaks Labor Day record with Asian turnout

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first Marvel film featuring an Asian superhero, dominated the weekend box office with an all-time record for a film opening over Labor Day.

The Walt Disney Co. movie made an estimated $71.4 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to data from Comscore Inc. The result blew past initial estimate of $52 million expected by researcher Boxoffice Pro.

The film hit home with Asian filmgoers, who represented about 17% of theater attendees over the weekend, more than double the usual turnout for a Marvel film, according to demographic data supplied by Disney. It did particularly well in cities with large Asian populations including San Francisco, Honolulu and Vancouver.

“Shang-Chi” had the second-highest opening weekend of the pandemic, after “Black Widow.” All the films in theaters took in $106.2 million, the best first-three days of Labor Day weekend since 2014, Comscore data showed.

The Labor Day holiday is traditionally a slow one for the film industry, as consumers are usually distracted by kids returning to school and the start of college football. The movie business is still struggling to cope with the pandemic, with swaths of theaters in Asia and Latin America closed.

Disney took a gamble releasing “Shang-Chi” only in theaters and on this weekend. It’s the second major movie this year Disney has debuted solely in cinemas, instead of making its movies simultaneously available on Disney+ for free or for a $30 fee.

The Marvel picture tells the story of Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, who is “drawn into the mysterious Ten Rings organization,” according to a description from the studio. It has a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the more critically acclaimed comic book films.

“Candyman,” a thriller from Universal Pictures, took the No. 2 spot at the box office this weekend, in its second week out. It made $10.6 million domestically, with analysts from Boxoffice Pro expecting it to take in $9.3 million. Another Disney film, “Free Guy,” which is also only in theaters, made $8.7 million in its third week.

Mu still rare in Thailand but other variants could be on their way: DMS

The Delta variant accounts for 93 per cent of Covid-19 infections, according to 1,500 random samples taken over the last week by the Department of Medical Sciences (DMS).

Meanwhile, cases of the Delta sub-variant “AY” have risen slightly but the new Mu and C1.2 variants are still rare in Thailand, said department director-general Suppakit Sirilak on Monday.

The Delta variant accounted for 97.6 per cent of cases in Bangkok and 84.8 per cent in other provinces. The Beta variant was responsible for 5 per cent of cases nationwide – 2.4 per cent in the capital and 5.7 per cent in Southern provinces where it was first detected.

The department said it has collected more than 13 million samples since last year in its mission to trace different variants.

The World Health Organisation classifies Covid-19 variants in two categories: variants of concern and variants of interest. The variants of concern are Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta – all of which are found in Thailand except Gamma. Variants of interest – classified as those which are likely to cause issues with transmission, vaccination or public health – are Eta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda and Mu.

Suppakit said the Mu variant, which was first detected at the beginning of the year in Colombia, was being closely monitored but did not yet present a concern for Thailand.

The department is cooperating with Prince of Songkla University to test 10,000 samples for variants by the end of 2021, he added.

Meanwhile, Phuket was ordered to accelerate testing on Monday, said Suppakit. He urged people not to panic if more variants were detected in Thailand.

Xiong Jing Nan Retains ONE Women’s Strawweight World Title With Unanimous Decision Victory Over Michelle Nicolini

Itsuki Hirata, Ritu Phogat, Stamp Fairtex, and Seo Hee Ham Advance to ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Semifinals

Singapore: ONE Championship™ (ONE) returned with the historic all-female event, ONE: EMPOWER, which aired live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday night. The show featured the highly anticipated ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix quarterfinal matchups, the promotional debut of a pound-for-pound kickboxing icon, and a showdown for the ONE Women’s Strawweight World Title.

In the main event, reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion Xiong Jing Nan retained her World Title with a one-sided performance against 13-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and #2-ranked strawweight contender Michelle Nicolini.

Xiong peppered Nicolini with beautiful boxing combinations to open the contest, staggering the Brazilian with a plethora of right hands on multiple occasions. Nicolini tried her best to move forward as she looked to grapple, but she couldn’t bridge the gap. The Chinese superstar continued her onslaught in the championship rounds, as Nicolini simply had no answer for Xiong’s impeccable striking. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Xiong to win by unanimous decision, as she earned her fifth successful ONE Women’s Strawweight World Title defense.

In the co-main event, #5-ranked atomweight Seo Hee Ham figured in an absolute war with #1-ranked Denice Zamboanga to win by split decision, punching her ticket to the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix semifinals. Zamboanga looked to close the distance early, entering the clinch in an attempt to bring the action to the ground. Ham tried to keep the Filipina at range by attacking with jabs and then throwing left hands down the middle. In the third round, Zamboanga exploded with a powerful takedown, but Ham battled right back on the feet to close out the fight.

In a highly anticipated rematch, #4-ranked atomweight Stamp Fairtex won a split decision in a close back-and-forth battle with #3-ranked Alyona Rassohyna. Rassohyna started off strong on the feet, bringing the fight to Stamp. The Thai athlete responded by securing the Ukrainian’s back on the ground and threatening with a rear-naked choke. In the third round, Rassohyna caught Stamp in an armbar, but the latter escaped and used her ground-and-pound to deal serious damage. In the end, Stamp earned the split decision victory on the scorecards to advance to the tournament semifinals.

Utilizing her superior wrestling skills, Phogat blasted Meng with knees and elbows from top position to dominate the rest of the way.

Itsuki Hirata advanced to the Grand Prix semifinals with a comprehensive victory over a fearless Alyse Anderson. Behind a strong judo base, Hirata consistently took Anderson to the mat with ease, pounding on the American with elbows, fists, and knees from top position.
