Graft busters probe purchase of street lights topped with mythical figures

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022

The National Anti-Corruption Commission’s Samut Prakan office is investigating the nearly 70 million baht purchase of 727 street lights topped with mythical kinnaree figures following a complaint received by its Corruption Deterrence Centre.

It is investigating the purchase of the street lights as well as the purchase of about 50 million baht worth of surveillance cameras and emergency warning equipment by the Racha Thewa subdistrict administrative organisation in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province.

Officials from the commission on Friday surveyed Chamchuri 2 village in Racha Thewa subdistrict where 40 kinnaree-topped street lights will be installed.

Officials from the subdistrict administrative organisation explained that the lights were necessary because a large pond was located in the village adjacent to an area where residents exercise. They said they were concerned that some people might slip into the pond at night because some areas around it were poorly lit.

This is why the purchase of the lights was approved even though some will be installed in private areas, they said.

New surveillance cameras are being purchased to replace damaged cameras bought in 2014, subdistrict officials said. Others will be installed on King Kaeo road to monitor traffic, they said.

Officials from the commission advised subdistrict officials to weigh the appropriateness and public benefit of the purchase of kinnaree-topped street lights and the legality of installing them in private areas.

They also advised the subdistrict officials to ask experts to inspect existing cameras to determine whether it is best to repair or replace them and to consult with the public before making a decision.

Following the inspection, anti-corruption officials requested additional documents from the subdistrict for further investigation.

Commission dismisses senior prosecutor for ‘tampering’ in Red Bull case

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022

The Public Prosecutors Commission has decided by a majority vote to discharge senior public prosecutor Chainarong Saengthong-aram for allegedly tampering with evidence.

Chainarong was accused of reducing the speed at which Red Bull scion Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya was driving his Ferrari in the 2012 hit-and-run case from 177km/h to less than 80km/h.

This reduction in speed prompted the former Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) director-general Nate Naksuk to drop the criminal case against Vorayuth.

The commission voted on November 23 to discharge Chainarong, though sources said on Friday that he had submitted his resignation earlier.

In May, the commission also unanimously voted to indict Nate for gross negligence in deciding to drop criminal charges against Vorayuth in July 2020. However, he was not charged with corruption or malfeasance, and disciplinary action against him was reduced.

As for Chainarong, the commission had established a disciplinary committee to investigate his action, and the panel concluded that tampering with evidence was a disciplinary offence. It recommended the harshest penalty of dismissal.

However, some commissioners disagreed and said he should instead be barred from promotions for three years instead of being dismissed.

This prompted the attorney-general, Naree Tantasathien, to step in and rule that Chainarong had committed a disciplinary offence, but since he had no prior offences, his punishment should be reduced from dismissal to removal from duty.

Both Chainarong and Nate will receive their pensions.

Car insurance market ‘poised for big leap’ next year

Car insurance market ‘poised for big leap’ next year

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 02, 2022

Jarupong Krisanaraj

Thailand’s car insurance market is expected to grow exponentially next year following three trends that emerged during the Covid-19 crisis, according to Priceza Money, a car insurance price comparison website.

Priceza Money is one of the business units under shopping search engine and comparison platform provider Priceza.

“The Covid-19 crisis over the past three years has affected the car insurance market and customer behaviour,” Priceza Money’s head, Siravit Chayavanich, said on Thursday.

Firstly, he said the emergence of personalised car insurance had enabled customers to purchase insurance 30-40% cheaper than full insurance.

“Customers preferred buying cheap car insurance as they rarely used their car during the Covid-19 crisis,” he said.

He said the trend of various personalised car insurance policies, such as pay-per-mile insurance, top-up insurance and driving profile-based insurance, had grown exponentially amid the Covid-19 crisis.

He added that foreign insurance companies, such as By Miles, Tesla and Geico, had introduced customised car insurance.

“Even though the Covid-19 crisis has abated, consumers’ demand for personalised car insurance is still increasing,” he said, highlighting its feature of meeting customers’ needs at a cheap price.

He added that the driving data collection feature in electric vehicles also helped insurance companies to launch a car insurance that meets customers’ needs.

“However, insurance brokers do not prefer selling personalised car insurance because it affects their commission fee,” he added.

Secondly, Siravit said many insurance companies adopted a direct-to-customer business model to boost online sales of car insurance, as customers became familiar with online shopping during the Covid-19 crisis.

“For instance, Thaivivat Insurance is focusing on selling personalised car insurance on its website, while allowing insurance brokers to sell full insurance,” he said.

He added that there is still room for growth in Thailand for the direct-to-customer car insurance sales channel, as it accounts for only 1% of the country’s car insurance sales channels.

The proportion of direct-to-customer car insurance sales channels in the US and UK is 25% and 35%, respectively, he added.

Thirdly, Siravit said customers’ behaviour in purchasing car insurance had changed due to the Covid-19 crisis.

He said customers are paying more attention to insurance companies’ reliability in responding to news of Covid-19 insurance cancellations, even though it means customers have to pay higher insurance premiums.

“Up to five insurance companies that offered Covid-19 insurance have closed so far, hitting customer confidence,” he said.

He expects customers to pay more attention to insurance companies’ reliability more than the price of insurance premiums next year.

“Hence, insurance companies must pay attention to their service to gain the confidence of customers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Priceza CEO and co-founder Thanawat Malabuppha added that the economic situation of inflation and rising product prices would prompt customers to turn to personalised car insurance.

“Inflation and rising product prices affect customers’ decision on purchasing car insurance,” he said, “However, these negative sentiments will enable customers to purchase personalised car insurance.”

Charity gala dinner highlighting Thai-Chinese ties raises 12 million baht for Ramathibodi Foundation

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 02, 2022

On the historic occasion of Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China, attending the all-important Apec 2022 Summit, China Moutai – a company which produces China’s number one premium liquor Baijiu – on behalf of Guizhou Moutai, teamed up with King Power group to organise the “China Moutai x King Power Charity Gala Dinner”, with proceeds from the gala auction going to Ramathibodi Foundation.

China’s Baijiu liquor, which is also the world’s No 1 premium spirits, has a rich yet exquisite history dating as far back as 2,000 years.

The charity gala drew a number of key personalities who had also participated in Apec meetings, like Tepparat “O” Songkraw, who had created valuable souvenirs for world leaders, including President Xi, as well as top Thai and Chinese businessmen.

Korn Dabbaransi, Chairman of the Sino-Thai Friendship association, chaired the gala dinner. Pol Gen Dr Chitchai Wannasathit, honorary chairman, Rocky Lau, executive of Diam Dragon (Asia-Pacific),  Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, CEO of King Power group, Dr Ting Chong Quin, chairman of Guizhou Moutai of the People’s Republic of China, Narongsak Puttapornmongkol, the new President of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Hataithep Theerathada were the other top personalities who attended the event at Pullman King Power in Bangkok.

The guests who attended the dinner had an opportunity to bid for six special and rare Moutai vintages which are collectors’ items. Income totaling 12 million baht without deducting expenses from the auction was handed to Ramathibodi Foundation.

Dr Ting, who delivered an address on longstanding Thai-Chinese relations, mentioned this was his first visit to Thailand.

He said that on the occasion of President Xi attending Apec 2022 and on behalf of Guizhou Moutai and the Chinese people who “love and miss” Thai people, he is ready to support Thailand in various ways. Having cooperated with King Power to organise this event, Dr Ting said he was willing to use the income to support the Thai public health sector because he realised that Thai medical personnel had worked hard in the wake of Covid spreading.

King Power and China Moutai would like to provide moral support to the Thai medical staff, Dr Ting said, adding that he also wishes to help bolster Thailand’s health sector through this event. He believes it will strengthen Thai-Chinese ties and help everyone emerge from the crisis unscathed and quickly.

Providing his perspective as a creator, Tepparat pointed out that Moutai liquor “is one that is distilled in accordance with ancient Chinese wisdom and culture”.

“This liquor is made from a special species of organic sorghum and wheat and Guizhou Moutai channels a smooth yet excellent taste. Its liquor is refreshing and fragrant, just like odiferous wood distilled for hundreds and thousands of years, with the scent of ancient, sophisticated flowers, unlike other Chinese liquor that I have tasted,’’ Tepparat explained.

Why travel alone?

Why travel alone?

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 02, 2022

Those who desire to see the globe in a unique way typically decide to travel alone. As the modern overlord that is social media constantly surrounds us with other people’s thoughts and experiences, making it increasingly important for us to disengage from it and live life from our own perspectives.

By K Tanzeel Zaman

Traveling alone can be intimidating, especially for those who consider themselves to be social butterflies. But a lot of solo travellers find that their most contented and joyful moments in life are spent by themselves.

There is surely something special about travelling with friends, but here are a few reasons why taking a solo vacation will be the perfect way to relax and grow as a person.

Freedom on the road

You will start to experience a great sense of freedom and clarity once you decide to take that step and set off on a trip to a foreign nation. It might take a bit of time, and the transition might be subtle as our minds gradually let go of all the unnecessary concerns and baggage we gather throughout the day.

We frequently spend too much time at home worrying about our things, debts, and obligations to “feel” or to simply be present. If you can break free from this and limit your possessions to what would fit in a backpack, you can feel “waking up” and realise how little you have lost and how much you still have to gain. One of the most invaluable advantages of travelling alone is undoubtedly this!

You will never experience a feeling of freedom as intense as when you are travelling alone with your backpack, letting go of the past, and facing no obligations in the near future. This is living in the moment, and this is driving freely.

Lose yourself

We are an accumulation of words, stories, labels, emotions, and expectations that we have gathered over the years. The impulse to retain the overarching tale of the “self” is powerful because this jumble of words and ideas affects how we and others interact with one another if you have had a powerful sense of disassociation from that narrative and have attempted to make changes but have been met with fierce opposition from friends, family, and co-workers.

Backpacking has the advantage because nobody knows your story! Any elements of your past that you no longer identify with are yours to lose. You can leave the conceptual clutter surrounding you at home and speak honestly about your thoughts and feelings.

For a day, try having a different personality! Go out and mingle with everyone for a day if you were perceived as shy back home. If you were the life of the party back home, try to spend some time by yourself. You will not ever have to see any of those individuals again if it does not work out! To keep this notion working, always recite this mantra: “I am not what I think I am; I am not who you think I am. I am who I think you think I am.”

Look in between the pictures

Thanks to social media platforms like Instagram, we are constantly inundated with images from other places. Seeing some of the world’s most incredible natural and man-made wonders can be magnificent and awe-inspiring, but after travelling for a while you realise that this is not the most rewarding aspect of doing so.

The real tale, which you can only experience when travelling, lies between these images. When you try to communicate with people who do not speak your language, when you look down an alley and see an ancient shrine in disrepair when you watch the antics from your bed on an Indian sleeper train, or when you suddenly and suddenly realise how crazy your life is right now, you just stop and laugh. The daily myriad of small events that make solo travel what it is, in between the images, may end up being the things that draw you back again and again.

Dozens of Japan fans have been sticking around after the final whistle at World Cup matches to help with the cleanup.

After Japan beat Spain 2-1 on Thursday (December 1), a group of Japan supporters hung around to collect trash left around the stands of the Khalifa International Stadium.

The courteous fans filled blue plastic bags with discarded cups, plastic bottles, and wrappers while most fans were already well on their way home into early Friday (December 2) morning.

Scores of Japan fans came to the match armed with clear blue bags which have become a symbol at the Qatar World Cup as fans have taken notice of their tidy ways.

One fan who took part in the clean up, Atsushi Nomura, said it was just common sense for people to pick up after themselves.

“If I don’t feel like looking at trash, I just pick it up. It’s faster that way. If we just wait for others to do it, nobody will do it. So, it’s faster that we just do it ourselves. That’s it. It’s simply because we like things to be tidy and clean,” Nomura said.

Another participant, Naoya Endo, said tidiness is instilled at a young age and likened it to a Japanese proverb.

“There’s a proverb (in Japan) that you leave things cleaner than you found them when you arrived. That’s to say we make the space tidier and cleaner before we leave, and that’s something we were taught by our parents when we were kids,” Endo said.

How Japan – and the ball sensor – knocked mighty Germany out of World Cup

How Japan – and the ball sensor – knocked mighty Germany out of World Cup

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 02, 2022

The positional sensor in the Al Rihla ball provided the biggest shock of the 2022 World Cup so far, knocking Germany out of the tournament on Friday, Thai time.

As Japan began wildly celebrating their strike to go 2-1 up against Spain, the referee ruled the ball had gone out of play before the final pass and disallowed the goal.

The video assistant referee (VAR) then took another look, and calculated a tiny fraction of the ball had stayed in play.

It was enough to eliminate four-time winners Germany, who were playing Costa Rica in Group E’s other fixture.

Going into last night’s matches, all four teams in Group E were still in the race to qualify for the knockout stage.

But Japan needed a win against favourites Spain to guarantee their berth in the round of 16.

Alvaro Morata headed Spain into the lead in the 11th minute, and the future was looking bleak for Japan at half-time.

The Blue Samurai returned after the break knowing that they needed a win since Germany were 1-0 up against Costa Rica.

Japan’s Ritsu Doan unleashed a long-range strike to equalise in the 48th minute.

Then Kaoru Mitoma chased a ball to the byline before cutting it back for Ao Tanaka to make it 2-1. Referee Victor Gomes quickly interrupted Japan’s celebrations to rule the ball had gone out of play before the goal.

However, VAR overturned his decision after the positional sensor in the Al Rihla ball showed it had stayed within the field of play.

How Japan – and the ball sensor – knocked mighty Germany out of World Cup

According to Fifa rules, the ball is only out of play when every part crosses the line.

In other words, if a line is drawn straight up from the byline, and that line intersects with any part of the ball, the ball is still in play.

Fifa also offered an explanation after the game, saying the “curvature of the ball” kept it in play.

The goal was crucial, as Japan needed a win to qualify since Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2.

Japan finished top of Group E and will face Croatia in the round of 16, while second-place Spain will play Morocco.

Germany crash out of World Cup despite 4-2 win over Costa Rica

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 02, 2022

Reuters

Four-time champions Germany sensationally crashed out of the World Cup despite a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in their last Group E match on Thursday (December 1), tumbling out at the first hurdle for the second consecutive time.

Germany finished third in the standings, behind Spain on goal difference, with Japan top following their 2-1 win over the Spaniards.

The result left Japan facing Croatia in the last 16 while Spain will face Morocco.

On a night of unrelenting drama in the desert near Doha, the Germans struck first with Serge Gnabry in the 10th minute but saw the Central Americans score twice with Yeltsin Tejeda and Juan Pablo Vargas before a Kai Havertz brace put them back in front.

Fellow substitute Niclas Fuellkrug added a fourth in stoppage time but it could do nothing to prevent their elimination as Spain advanced with a superior goal difference.

It was the first time in their illustrious World Cup history that Germany had failed to win any of their first two group matches and despite bagging a win on their last attempt, they will be departing Qatar with dropped heads.

They were teetering on the brink of elimination going into the game after losing their opening group match to Japan and then snatching a 1-1 draw against Spain.

Needing only victory to avoid a repeat of their shock 2018 World Cup first round exit, Germany, with seven Bayern Munich players in their line-up, charged forward from the start in search of an early goal to settle their nerves.

Jamal Musiala cut from left into the box and tested keeper Keylor Navas with a low drive in the second minute.

GermanyGermany

It was one-way traffic initially and unmarked Thomas Mueller should have done much better when he was picked out by Joshua Kimmich but could not keep his header on target.

Gnabry, however, scored with his glancing header in the 10th minute to put the four-time champions in front.

Costa Rica, who required at least a point to have a chance to progress, rarely crossed into the German half, with only about 25% possession in the first 45 minutes.

Germany were eager to make amends for their bad tournament start with teenager Musiala repeatedly taking on the entire Costa Rican defence.

The chances kept coming but the Germans, as in the game against Japan, struggled to convert them.

They were almost punished when Keysher Fuller benefitted from a double defensive blunder but his shot was tipped over the bar by keeper Manuel Neuer, who became a World Cup record holder for goalkeepers with his 19th appearance.

With the group standings flashing on the big screen of the Al Bayt stadium, Germany grew nervous with Musiala twice hitting the post early in the second half.

Neuer, however, could do nothing 13 minutes after the restart when Tejeda thundered the ball past him on the rebound after he had first saved a Kendall Waston header.

Vargas then bungled the ball over the line in the 70th minute to put them in front.

Substitute Havertz scored twice in 12 minutes and Fuellkrug added another in stoppage time but ultimately it was too little too late with Spain advancing with a superior goal difference.

Japan staged their second stunning turnaround of the World Cup when they beat 2010 champions Spain 2-1 on Thursday (December 1) with two quick-fire goals and advanced to the last 16 along with their beaten opponents.

Going into the halftime break 1-0 down and on course for an early World Cup exit, Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu reorganised his side to give them more attacking bite and within six minutes the Samurai Blue were ahead.

Ritsu Doan, one of the substitutes, hammered in a shot from the edge of the box in the 48th minute that Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon – whose poor clearance had created the danger – could not keep out.

Three minutes later, Ao Tanaka scored from close range after the other halftime sub Kaoru Mitoma cut the ball back from the byline.

The VAR system took several minutes to confirm the ball had not gone out before Mitoma’s touch, sparking wild celebrations by Japan and their fans when the verdict came in.

Spain had looked in total control in the first half but were suddenly clinging to their chance of staying in the World Cup as Costa Rica and Germany battled out their own drama in the other Group E match.

Alvaro Morata had put the Spaniards ahead when he scored his third goal in three games in Qatar, rising high above Japan’s defence to power a header past goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda in the 11th minute after a cross by Cesar Azpilicueta.

The breathtaking 2-1 win for Japan – who also beat Germany 2-1 after going behind in their opening match of the tournament – meant they topped Group E, followed by Spain in second who finished ahead of third-placed Germany only on goal difference.

Japan will face Croatia in the last 16 while Spain will meet Morocco.
