Reinforcing commitment to sustainable water management
Recently, Gulf Group (GULF) was awarded four ‘Water Footprint of Products’ certificates at the Eco Innovation Forum 2021 hosted virtually by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and the Water and Environment Institute for Sustainability (WEIS) via Zoom. The awards reinforce the company’s capabilities in managing water resources efficiently and sustainably in accordance with international standards while remaining socially and environmentally responsible in the areas where the company operates – as reflected by the efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions both directly and indirectly in a move towards a low-carbon society.
GULF conducts water footprint assessments on all of its power plants that have been in operation for at least one full year. Efficient use of water at various stages of the electricity production cycle results in saving production costs as well as increasing power plants’ competitive edge. GULF also continues to place great importance on resource management and positive environmental impact, which contributes to sustainable development.

Thailand’s first official WealthTech startup, Jitta Wealth Asset Management (Jitta Wealth), is now offering the “Thematic Optimize” fund, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to manage investment portfolios.
Trawut Luangsomboon, Jitta Wealth’s chief executive officer, said thematic investment was popular among investors worldwide.
Thematic investors normally invest based on global megatrends, like fintech, cloud computing, AI and robotics, games and sports or clean energy. They also invest via exchange-traded funds (ETF) to spread their money across stocks related to each trend in the market.
In response to the popularity of thematic investing, Jitta Wealth launched a thematic private fund in 2020, which allowed investors to design their portfolio and theme of investment on their own.

In 2021, Jitta Wealth launched the Thematic Optimize private fund, which uses AI to analyze the growth of each megatrend in the market, covering more than 2,500 stocks.
Thematic Optimize can analyze returns and risks for each investment. Plus, the AI service can choose the four most interesting themes of the time and adjust investors’ portfolios automatically.
With the Thematic Optimize portfolio management technology, investors in Thailand will not miss out on global opportunities that will grow in the future and produce high returns.
“The fee for this service is only 0.5 per cent per year,” Trawut said, adding that “Jitta Wealth is committed to developing investment technology”.
Samitivej Hospital has partnered with Japan’s Sano Hospital, which is recognised for its expertise in the removal of large polyps in the colon at an early stage using gastrointestinal endoscopy techniques.
Diseases are affecting humans more than expected, and one of them is cancer, especially colon cancer which was ranked the third most common disease found among Thais. This disease poses a high risk of death because most patients acknowledge it when it’s too late.
The good news is that the death rate has declined thanks to modern technologies that help doctors detect and treat patients effectively.
What causes colon cancer?
Colon cancer is caused by a polyp generated from an abnormality in the colon and rectum. This polyp may not affect patients initially but may turn cancerous if left untreated and spread to other parts of the body.
Factors that cause colon cancer
• Age 45 years or above
• Excessive drinking, smoking, not drinking enough water, preferring to consume meat instead of fruits and vegetables, not exercising enough
Symptoms
• Chronic stomachache, especially in the lower abdomen
• Alternating between constipation and diarrhea
• Chronic diarrhea
• Black or blackish-red stools
• Reduction in stool size
• Feeling of incomplete defecation or pain in the anus
• Fatigue due to anaemia and iron deficiency
• Unexpected weight loss
Paying attention to your body and symptoms can help keep cancer at bay
ADVERTISEMENT
The risk of developing colon cancer can be reduced by screening for the polyp before it turns into a cancer cell. Apart from reducing the risk of death, it also enables doctors to treat patients effectively. The severity of disease can be classified as follows:
High-risk group
• Aged 45 and above
• Have inflammatory bowel disease
ADVERTISEMENT
• A family history of inflammatory bowel disease or diagnosed with polyp (considered a risk due to genetic disorder)
Moderate-risk group
• Aged 45 and above
• No symptoms
• Inappropriate behaviour such as excessive drinking, smoking, drinking less water, preferring meat over fruits and vegetables, skipping exercise

Screening for colon cancer
Those in the high-risk group can go for the endoscopy method as it can detect and remove small polyps immediately. A study found that 90 per cent of colon cancer start as a polyp and can take five to 10 years before turning into a cancer cell.
Those in the moderate-risk group can opt for different screening methods, such as faecal immunochemical test, barium enema, CT scan or colonoscopy.
High-tech screening methods
Samitivej Hospital has partnered with Japan’s Sano Hospital, which is recognised for its expertise in the removal of large polyps in the colon at an early stage using gastrointestinal endoscopy techniques.
The medical team of Samitivej Hospital travelled to Japan to learn about the technique and hone their laparoscopic and surgical skills. Since 2015, doctors from Japan have been coming to Samitivej every year to share their knowledge and conduct case studies.
The Narrow Band Image (NBI) technique directs radiation to the intestinal wall where substances are absorbed, to see the image of the blood vessels on the surface of the gastrointestinal mucosa clearly. With this technique, the appearance of the epithelium is changed. The NBI technique also allows the detection of flat polyps that resemble the surface of the intestines.
Samitivej Hospital has applied the NBI technique together with AI-assisted colonoscopy technology, which helps improve the quality of lesions detection in gastrointestinal endoscopy. This technique, called ENDOBRAIN, makes the polyp 1.5 times more visible than conventional techniques.
The ENDOBRAIN technique is a real-time endoscopic capture, which enhances the visibility of small polyps or polyps that are difficult to spot. Once the polyps are spotted, doctors can cut them off immediately, which helps patients avoid pain and unnecessary surgery.
Colon cancer treatment
• Surgery can be performed at any stage of the disease. The doctor may consider surgery along with radiation and chemotherapy.
• Chemotherapy can be administered orally or via intravenous or intramuscular injections, so the drug can be absorbed into the bloodstream and inhibit the proliferation or destruction of cancer cells. It can be used before or after surgery in combination with radiation. Chemotherapy can have side effects on normal cells and the functioning of other organs in the body, resulting in nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and hair loss.
• Radiation with high energy waves can destroy or inhibit the growth of cancer cells and reduce the recurrence of the disease. This can be done in conjunction with chemotherapy to make the treatment more effective.
• Targeted therapy can be used for targeted treatment that kills cancer cells without damaging neighbouring cells, so there are few side effects. Most often it is used in conjunction with chemotherapy. It was found that this therapy can prolong the patient’s life span.
• Immunotherapy drugs stimulate the patient’s immune system to detect and kill cancer cells better, which increase the chance to live longer. It is most often used in groups with diffuse cancer and requires a thorough biopsy for effective results.
Care after treatment
Though colon cancer can be cured, there is a chance that it can return. Therefore, periodic monitoring of the disease is necessary. During the first two years, the doctor may schedule follow-up visits every two months, with colonoscopy every six months and abdominal X-rays every three to six months. If the cancer is not detected the doctor may switch to an annual cancer screening appointment within three years.
Which in addition to attending the screening, patients should also reduce risk factors, such as limiting the intake of red meat and high-fat foods and boosting the consumption of vegetables, fruits and fibre-rich foods to normalise excretion. Regular exercise and getting enough sleep are also required, including an annual health check-up.

Marriott Internationals portfolio of hotels has been working to reduce its carbon footprint as part of its existing 2025 sustainability goals and this latest commitment to climate action is the next step in the companys sustainability journey.
Marriott International, Inc. (Nasdaq: MAR) (“Marriott”) today announced it has submitted its letter to the Science Based Targets initiative, committing to:
· Set science-based emissions reduction targets across all scopes, in line with 1.5°C emissions scenarios; and
· Set a long-term science-based target to reach net-zero value chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by no later than 2050, in line with the criteria and recommendations of the Science Based Targets initiative.
As part of its commitment to net-zero emissions, with support from a number of organizations including Global Citizen, Marriott is proud to announce its official sign-on to the Race to Zero via the most ambitious standard, Business Ambition for 1.5, and looks forward to celebrating this milestone on September 25 at Global Citizen Live. “We are driven to make a positive and sustainable impact wherever we do business, and this rigorous climate commitment to reach net-zero emissions is a needed step for us to do our part to help the communities and environments where we live, work and visit remain resilient and vibrant,” said Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International. “Even as we navigate one of the industry’s most difficult periods, we know this ambition will be a challenge. We are proud to join companies and institutions around the world striving to tackle climate change and build a healthier, more sustainable world.”
Marriott International’s portfolio of hotels has been working to reduce its carbon footprint as part of its existing 2025 sustainability goals and this latest commitment to climate action is the next step in the company’s sustainability journey. Achieving these new targets will require partnering with Marriott’s dedicated associates across disciplines along with the company’s valued hotel owners and franchisees. Over time, initiatives may include increased use of renewable energy, building electrification to maximize renewable electricity, continued modifications to design standards so buildings are more efficient, and the installation of automation systems and energy efficiency upgrades (for example, smart thermostats). In addition to the company’s goal to provide further visibility to the carbon footprint and environmental impact of their travel with Marriott, guests and customers will see enhanced focus on existing sustainability efforts such as solid waste and food waste reduction and natural capital restoration, with the opportunity to participate in activities such as reforestation as well as coral and mangrove plantings.
In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this announcement aligns with the company’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, which guides Marriott’s commitment to help take on the world’s most pressing social, environmental, and economic issues, delivering value for associates, customers, owners, the environment, and communities around the world. It also builds on Marriott’s long-standing history of embedding sustainability throughout its business strategy, operations and value chain. Starting with the company’s core value to Serve Our World, and its first-generation environmental impact reduction goals, to its latest series of waste reduction initiatives, Marriott is promoting the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates, as well as the resiliency and longevity of the business.
Marriott’s sustainability strategy is driven by a wide range of initiatives to reduce environmental impacts through the construction and operation of sustainable hotels and responsible sourcing while protecting and restoring the ecosystems on which life depends. Recent initiatives include:
· The reduction of single-use plastics including replacing tiny, single-use toiletry bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel in guestroom showers with larger pump-topped bottles. When fully implemented across the globe in 2022, the company’s expanded toiletry program is expected to prevent about 500 million tiny bottles annually from going to landfills.
· The roll-out of an internal food waste prevention and reduction educational campaign, designed to support Marriott’s goal to reduce food waste by 50%.
· The launch of a publicly available responsible sourcing guide, to help Marriott’s supplier community join its sustainability journey on the path to responsibly sourcing 95% of the company’s top ten priority categories.
· The development of a certifications database to help properties operate more responsibly and work towards the goal of 100% of the portfolio receiving a third-party sustainability certification.
· Planting more than 415,000 trees over the last several years, including through the company’s work as a founding member of the Evergreen Alliance, a select group of Arbor Day Foundation partners and collaborators committed to advancing trees and forests as natural solutions for corporate sustainability and citizenship goals.
· Innovative ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration projects, such as working with The Ocean Foundation to remove and repurpose sargassum seaweed, which has had devastating impacts on the environment.

These technologies will initially be used for telemedicine solutions such as remote monitoring and diagnosis that will help reduce the risk of transmitting infections between doctors and patients significantly. In addition, they will be used for emergency care services such as ambulance transportation, where useful information, such as real-time location, patients’ vital signs and video images are transmitted instantly, enabling rescue doctors to receive guidance for the best emergency care and the hospital team to prepare for treatment or surgery upon arrival.
Huawei remains committed to introducing digital technologies to create a strong, connected healthcare ecosystem that can make the experience better for patients, customers and medical staff, while improving efficiency and reducing costs.
The move will ready the Group for entry into the emerging competitive arena and propel the firm as a regional financial technology conglomerate by 2025, with the goal of building a 200 million strong customer-base with a mission of connecting to the ecosystem both at home and abroad. SCBX will remain under the supervision of the Bank of Thailand.
The SCB Group has announced its corporate vision for tackling the rapidly evolving global context by establishing SCBX as a mothership company to accelerate proactive expansion into financial business to the fullest extent.
In announcing the latest move, Siam Commercial Bank CEO and Chairman of the Executive Committee Arthid Nanthawithaya said, “In 2025, the arrival of decentralized finance technology, the expansion and penetration of global platforms into financial business, post-Covid 19 consumer behavior, and dramatic changes to regulations will reshape business models, forcing banks into playing roles as intermediaries and making traditional banking fees less and less important. Such conventional roles will no longer satisfy the emerging needs and expectations of consumers. Consumer reliance on banks will wane, which will unavoidably have a negative impact on the future value proposition for traditional banking investors.”

“This disruption trend began six years ago and will become very apparent over the next three years, so SCB has rekindled its ambition and will continue to work hard to maximize its potential. Now is the most important time to ask the difficult questions of the future, to discover how SCB will transform itself in three years to create new value for its shareholders and consumers and grow further in the new world. SCB must no longer limit itself to traditional banking business, but rather take advantage of its financial strength to accelerate its aggressive expansion into other types of financial businesses that the market demands, build technological capabilities, and manage a large technology platform to keep pace with global players. It is crucial to quickly enter this new arena of competition in order to survive in the next 3-5 years,” added Arthid.
The strategy to strengthen the bank along with creating new business for the future will focus on embracing technology in conjunction with simplifying processes to meet the changing needs of customers as much as possible through every channel. The Bank’s focus is on creating maximum customer satisfaction.

SCB will therefore no longer be a bank in the original sense of the word, instead transforming into a financial technology group with a stronger banking business as part of the group. The group will expand into high-growth personal finance businesses where the Bank has yet to fill the gap. For each business, SCB will also partner with leading local and regional players in businesses that will be launched in the near future.
Apart from expanding into the personal finance business, SCB will need to leverage the group’s capabilities in building and managing large technology platforms, following its pilot Robinhood food delivery platform. The move aims to create competitiveness on par with global platforms and to upskill technology personnel, starting with the establishment of “SCB Tech X” and “Data X” with global partners to create in-house technology-based capabilities and platform scalability within a short time span.
In addition, SCB will expand into the digital asset business on a global scale via SCB 10X and SCB Securities (SCBS) to tackle the challenges of the financial world of the future by entering into venture capital arrangements and partnerships with global funds and developing digital asset businesses using new business models to create added value for the group in the long run.
“By 2025, SCB hopes to be able to create significant corporate value from new businesses beyond the fundamental profit and stability of its core banking business. This includes building a customer base reaching 200 million, expanding new businesses in foreign countries, and owning a large technology platform with a large number of users. After these three years, SCB will no longer be a bank. Instead, it will be a conglomerate with various financial businesses and technology platforms capable of meeting new consumer demands and able to compete with global competitors to create new value for shareholders, replacing banking businesses that may be impacted by change in a timely manner,” concluded Arthid.
