Restaurant in Samyan Mitrtown told to close until Dec 28

Samyan Mitrtown complex in Bangkok has ordered a branch of Nittaya Kai Yang Restaurant to close from December 25 to 28, after a Covid-19 patient was found to have visited the place late in the evening on December 12.

An announcement on Friday said the restaurant will open again on Tuesday, after being sterilised together with other areas of the complex, which are open as usual.

Restaurant staff have been told to quarantine.

Samut Sakhon stadium to be converted into field hospital in two days

Samut Sakhon Governor Weerasak Wijitsaengsri on Saturday gave the go-ahead for setting up a field hospital.

The hospital will be set up at Samut Sakhon Provincial Stadium located in Mahachai subdistrict, Muang district to serve as a treatment and quarantine centre for confirmed patients and those suspected of contracting the Covid-19 virus in the province, a news source revealed.

The governor’s order was approved by the Samut Sakhon Communication Disease Committee, which also stipulated that unauthorised persons be prohibited from entering the stadium effective immediately. Violators will face a maximum one year imprisonment or Bt100,000 fine, or both, under the Communicable Diseases Act BE 2558, as well as a maximum two years’ imprisonment or Bt40,000 fine, or both, under the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations BE 2548.

The source added that the field hospital would have 500 beds. The governor has ordered related agencies, including Department of Public Works and Town Planning and Samut Sakhon Sports Authority to finish setting up the field hospital within two days.

Earlier this week, the province surveyed the Thailand National Sports University Samut Sakhon campus, located in Bang Ya Phraek subdistrict, regarding the possibility of turning the campus into a field hospital for Covid-19 patients.

On Thursday hundreds of locals showed up at the university to protest the province’s decision, citing that some 10,000 people live near the university, and there are many kindergartens and nurseries nearby as well as a child development centre.

Pro-democracy group leader sells prawns im front of Government House

The leader of pro-democracy “We Volunteer” group, Piyarat Chongthep, on Saturday decided to sell a tonne of prawns in front of Government House, in response to a decrease in seafood sales across the nation due to the new Covid-19 crisis in Samut Sakhon province.

Piyarat explained that the prawns were brought from a farm in Nakhon Pathom province. His commercial operation was supervised by the police officers there.

The latest Covid-19 crisis emerged in Thailand last week, from the Central Shrimp Market in Samut Sakhon. Initial patients included seafood vendors, their family members and migrant workers who worked there, but the coronavirus has spread to other people who visited this market and other markets in the province.

This week, several vendors who had purchased seafood from Samut Sakhon for selling in their shops or in their stalls, were found infected with the virus. Moreover, some markets have been closed after the confirmed cases, obstructing routine trading and sales.

94 domestic cases among 110 new Covid-19 patients

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Saturday revealed 110 cases in the past 24 hours, including 94 domestic cases and 16 in state quarantine.

Of the 94 cases, 64 were Thai nationals while 30 were migrant workers living in the country.

18 were in Bangkok,10 in Phetchaburi, seven in Samut Prakan, five in Chai Nat, four in Ratchaburi, three each in Nakhon Ratchasima and Rayong, two each in Saraburi, Chaiyaphum, Satun and Chachoengsao, one each in Ayutthaya, Pathumthani, Trang, Khon Kaen, Phichit, and Songkhla.

The new cases in quarantine facilities included two from Myanmar, four from Russia, three from the US, and one each from France, Turkey, the UK, Mozambique, India, Saudi Arabia and Germany.
The total number of confirmed cases in Thailand has risen to 6,020 — 4,061 domestic cases, of which 1,338 were migrant workers, and 1,959 in quarantine centres — 4,152 have recovered and been discharged while 60 people have died.
According to Worldometer, as of 10am on Saturday, the total number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 80.20 million (up by 472,443), 56.47 million have recovered, 23.73 million are active cases (105,785 in severe condition) and 1.75 million have died (up by 8,374).

Thailand ranks 144th for most cases in the world, while the US tops the list with 19.21 million, followed by India 10.16 million, Brazil 7.44 million, Russia 2.99 million and France 2.54 million.

Air quality unsafe in three Bangkok areas

Air quality in three areas of Bangkok exceeded safe levels, or 50 micrograms (mcg) per cubic metre.

Bangkok’s air monitoring solutions reported at 7am on Saturday that particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) was 64mcg per cubic metre in Nong Khaem district, while it was 51mcg per cubic metre in Thawi Watthana district, near Sanam Luang II, and 59mcg per cubic metre in Taweewanarom Park.

Separately, the AirVisual application showed the air quality index of Bangkok at 92, or moderate level, at 10am.

Timeline of 13th Covid-19 case in Nonthaburi shows link to Samut Sakhon

Nonthaburi provincial authorities on Friday revealed the timeline of the 13th patient in the latest Covid-19 wave in the province.

As of Friday, 15 new patients were confirmed in the province, taking the cumulative total to 131 since the outbreak early this year.

The 13th case is a person aged 36, who possibly got infected in Samut Sakhon.

According to the announcement, the man lived in Nonthaburi’s Bang Bua Thong district, and had driven to Mahachai seafood market in the red area province on December 15, 18 and 22.

The man had suspected symptoms – diarrhoea and snot – on December 21.

He also visited Sarasas Witaed School – Bang Bua Thong branch – for bringing his child back home on December 15, 16 and 17. Also, he took his child to the school on December 16 and 17.

The patient also visited Sombat Buri market in Nonthaburi on December 17 and 21, and Bang Len seafood market on December 22.

The man decided to visit a private hospital for checkup on December 23 and was found infected on December 24.

Court gives two years’ jail time to red-shirt protesters for possessing grenades during 2014 protests

The Criminal Court on Friday read its verdict in a case filed by the Criminal Case Prosecutor Office against Krisada Chaikhai, aged 49 years, and Phassanai Phanas, 45, members of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship, also known as red shirts, for violating the Arms Control Act BE 2530 during the mass protests in 2014.

The two were arrested with 20 anti-personnel fragmentation grenades in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district and had confessed to their crimes.

The court gave two years’ prison time to both defendants, reducing the original sentence of four years due to their confession and cooperation with the investigation. However, only Phassanai will serve the two-year sentence as Krisada, on March 12, had already been given a life sentence by the Criminal Court for throwing a grenade on a stage during a rally of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, also known as yellow shirts, on January 19, at Victory Monument, resulting in one death and 26 injured.
