The team behind the creation of gifts and souvenirs said it was proud to see leaders and special guests attending the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting appreciating the offerings from host Thailand.

In addition to making arrangementsfor the summit in Bangkok from November 17 to 19, the preparation of gifts and souvenirs is another important part, to create a good image of the country with memorable mementos for visitors under the concept of Bio-Circular-Green (BCG).

The team had been assigned by the Culture Ministry on behalf of the Thai government to create and produce gifts for this special occasion to be presented to the leaders, their spouses and special guests.

The main gift set consists of three items: embossed metal picture “Rajata Saen Tok”; embossed metal accessory boxes “Rajata Muen Tok” and a clothing accessories set “Chaturabhorn”, consisting of “Ratihong” shawl, “Sukharom” face mask, “Sakyaburut” necktie, and “Phakapak” handkerchief.

Apart from the main gifts produced by the team, a silver nielloware picture frame, Yan Lipao basketry, the book: “Thai Silk for All (Directory of Thai silk)” and a coin commemorating the 29th Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting were handed out to leaders and special guests as well.

Tepparat Songkraw, head of the Working Group on the Creation of Gifts and Souvenirs, said he named the project “Gifts from the Kingdom of Thailand”.

He said the project implies that “every single gift to be created must have its roots in the wisdom and heritage of the beautiful Kingdom of Thailand”.

“The gifts are meant not only to impress leaders of all nations, but every item must be valuable and functional for use or equipped with unique stories to tell at this event and spread out to each country, to ensure that the Thai identity is transmitted to the eyes of hundreds of millions of people around the world,” he said.

He said the team had to overcome three challenges in this project:

● The first challenge is the integration of traditional values of Thai culture with contemporary elegance and luxury, while being functional.

● The second one is the story-telling about Thailand through patterns in a small space of a few square centimetres.

● The third one is to put both elements beautifully on recycled materials, in line with the main concept of organising this international conference.

“It took us over three months to prepare and produce all 75 sets of 175 pieces in just one month,” he said, “We have been working on-site, making more than 20 trips to work closely with the communities, spending altogether not less than 1,000 hours.”

With the synergy of team members and related agencies, he said the project was completed in the specified time.

“Although we have been involved in many world-class creations, this is one of the projects that the working team and I feel so proud of,” he said.

Apart from seeing world leaders’ appreciation of the gifts, he said the team was also proud to have helped the communities generate income.

“On top of these, the proudest thing is to take part in inheriting Thai cultural wisdom and present it to meet the consumption preferences of consumer lifestyle today, both in our country and globally,” he added.

State agency and DTAC join hands to rehabilitate youths

State agency and DTAC join hands to rehabilitate youths

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2022

The Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection and DTAC have signed a memorandum of understanding on developing digital skills for future career opportunities and skills to safeguard against online risks for youths under Thailand’s criminal justice system.

The youths will be able to learn digital skills and develop a positive attitude towards digital technology via an e-Learning platform and on-site workshops. In addition, dtac Net for Living, together with Thailand Professional Qualification Institute (TPQI), has launched “dtac Net for Living course” on an online platform. Youths who are trained in this course will obtain an educational equivalency certificate to continue their studies further and pursue career opportunities.

Rehabilitation to Social Reintegration

According to the DJOP, in the fiscal year 2022, there were 12,202 cases involving Gen Z children and youths, with approximately 3,000 being rehabilitated in juvenile detention centres and training centres nationwide.

Pol. Lt. Col. Wannapong Kotcharag, Director-General of the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection (DJOP), said, “The DJOP provides rehabilitation in both physical and psychological aspects, as well as offering education and upskilling sessions conducted by teachers and experts. These skills and education can be applied in real life when they return to society.”

In juvenile detention centres, three types of education are provided for the children and youths: (1) non-formal and informal education, (2) formal education, and (3) alternative education courses to support youths in completing compulsory education (Grade 9).  Vocational training is also provided. Certificates of completion are provided for graduates, so they will be able to return to society afterwards. Each year, around 1,557 youths completed their compulsory education and 2,237 completed short vocational training.

State agency and DTAC join hands to rehabilitate youths

One of the philosophies DJOP upholds is to provide youths under Thailand’s criminal justice system an opportunity to improve and develop themselves to be able to return to society. This collaboration with dtac is one of our efforts to create opportunities for juveniles to learn about the digital world and online tools from experts, as well as enhance experiences for them to be able to safeguard themselves from online risks.

Digital Inclusion to Enhance Livelihood Opportunities

Stephen James Helwig, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Total Access Communication PLC or dtac, said, “The youths under rehabilitation with the DJOP are digital natives or Gen Z born between 1997 and 2012 – meaning they are between 10 and 25 years old. They grew up with digital technology and innovation. dtac and DJOP have thus partnered to help reconnect and reactivate them upon their return to a society under rapid digital transformation. We aim to provide them with an opportunity to develop their digital skills so that they can connect and work with other youths their own age.

An interesting survey forecasts that Gen Z will soon be the largest consumer segment. As they join the workforce, their income is predicted to rise more than fivefold to 33 trillion USD by 2030, accounting for more than a quarter of global GDP, and exceeding millennials’ income. By 2031, the digital competence index measure forecasts that Gen Z’s average competence score will be 2.5% higher than Millennials, and over 8% higher than Gen X. Moreover, youth in this generation are more active on social, political, environmental and human rights issues. They, therefore, want to use social media and digital technology as a tool to exchange their views and solve challenges.”

Under this MoU, the DJOP and dtac will together provide digital resilience and digital business skills to children and youth under Thailand’s criminal justice system in 21 juvenile detention houses nationwide for a period of three years.  Specifically, the strategies to promote learning include:

1.     Combine online and at-site training formats for a better learning experience.

2.     Provide Net For Living training to increase digital marketing and entrepreneurship skills

3.     Provide access to ‘Dek-Lum’ e-learning in dtac’s SafeInternetLab online community for learners to continue their learning in online risk and digital skills.

dtac’s Net For Living training course has been endorsed by TPQI to meet its ‘Essential Competency Standards’ level of the ‘E-Commerce Curriculum.’  The course certificate will be an advantage for youths to continue their education or to pursue employment opportunities. This year, we aim to provide e-Learning education for at least 500 youths under Thailand’s criminal justice system.

EGCO records over THB10 billion operating profit in 9 months

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2022

The Electricity Generating Public Company Limited, or EGCO Group, has witnessed strong performance in the first three quarters of 2022, recording an operating profit of 10.34 billion baht due mainly to increased revenue from large-scale power plants in Thailand and abroad, the company said.

It has continued to expand its power business in the United States through the 49% acquisition of Rhode Island State Energy Centre, a combined cycle gas-fired power plant.

In addition, the company – a subsidiary of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) – has signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia’s Investment Ministry (MISA) under a clean energy initiative.

EGCO Group’s President Thepparat Theppitak said “the company has recorded a strong operation and succeeded in expanding business locally and internationally. The expansion saw the success in commercial operation of the 650-MW “Nam Theun 1” Hydropower Project in Lao PDR, the purchase of remaining of 10% of “Chaiyaphum Wind Farm” and “Theppana Wind Farm” in Chaiyaphum province, and the US investment through the 49% stake in the 609-MW natural gas power plant- RISEC”.

He also cited that MOU signing between the company and MISA for a clean energy initiative would promote collaboration on energy transition, EV ecosystem, investment, operation, maintenance service, and other related operations to achieve the two countries’ goal of decarbonization.

At the end first 3 quarters of 2022, EGCO earned 46,737 million baht with operating revenue growth at 61% compared to the same period last year. The company saw an operating profit of 10,345 million baht with 2,290 million baht in growth, or a 28% increase compared to the same period (Q1-Q3) of the previous year.

EGCO records over THB10 billion operating profit in 9 months

For the investment direction next year, EGCO Group will seek new investment opportunities based on “Cleaner, Smarter and Stronger to Drive Sustainable Growth” concept. The company focused on expanding the power business both in Thai and foreign countries as well as taking part in renewable energy projects of the government, especially solar energy, and battery energy storage systems, according to EGCO’s president.

Also, the company planned to develop new clean energy, for example, investing in a pilot project to produce electricity from fuel cells with a total capacity of 5 MW at “Klong Luang” power plant in Pathum Thani province. In the meantime, EGCO managed the existing power plants to maximize efficiency and minimize carbon emissions by developing technologies that help reduce carbon emissions and use in power plants.

“The investment direction goes in line with the company’s goal to become a low carbon company in order to achieve carbon neutral in 2050. We also aim to reduce the carbon emission intensity per unit of electricity generated by 10% in 2030. By so doing, the company also drives growth for the organization along with creating sustainable added value for all stakeholders amidst the transition of the electricity and energy industry,” concluded Thepparat.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2022

The JFA Pledge for 2050, which lays out the path for Japan to win the football World Cup, is a deeply thought out project, and going by the current trajectory of the team, appears far more feasible than most people would believe.

The dream project was planned in 2005.

The Nation explains the origin of this ambitious project.

Project: Dream Courage to Achieve

Japan set the ball rolling in 2005, three years after hosting the 2002 World Cup. In its history, Japan had played in the World Cup only two times at that stage.

The project set a target of winning the World Cup by 2050. Japan still has 28 years to achieve the goal.

Explainer: The JFA Pledge for 2050 — Japan’s road map to winning the World Cup

“The JFA Declaration, 2005”

“The JFA Pledge for 2015” had three key objectives to achieve in 2015:

  1. Japan Football Association (JFA) becomes one of the top 10 organisations in the world
  2. Create 5 million football fans and personnel (footballers, referees, and trainers)
  3. Japan’s national football team becomes one of the top 10 teams in the world

“The JFA Declaration, 2050”

The pledge came with two important goals to achieve by 2050.

“By 2050, we will realise two key objectives that will allow all to share a special joy:

  • The Football Family of Japan, the fans with a true love for football, will number 10 million strong.”
  • We will host the Fifa World Cup in Japan, and the Japan national team will be the champion.”

This was the pledge by the JFA in 2005.

Last year, the JFA also came up with a long-term plan for 100 years to create 100 professional teams by 2092.

Former Thai footballer Witthaya Laohakul, who coached a J-League team, said that Japan was serious about making a structure for the development system before they got to play in the World Cup.

“During the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Japan Football Association sent coaches of the Japan Football League; two people from each team — the head coach and assistant coach including me — to venues in Italy, to analyse matches on how to reach the World Cup. Then, [we] came back to analyse and develop the system to reach the World Cup,” Witthaya said.

Japan has now become a regular at the World Cup having qualified seven consecutive times.

Twenty-one of Japan’s 26-man squad at the 2022 World Cup played in professional leagues in Europe.

Eight of them played in Germany’s Bundesliga before they won the first match against Germany on Wednesday.

Currently, Japan have almost achieved all their short-term goals with only the top goal — the World Cup — still to be attained.

However, considering their rapid rate of progress they might not have to wait until 2050 to hoist the World Cup.

England began their campaign with a thumping 6-2 win against Iran in Doha on Monday.

The strong start has given hope to several pundits that England will advance further than in the 2018 World Cup when they finished fourth.

Japan stun Germany with late strikes at World Cup

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

Reuters

Late goals by Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano gave Japan an incredible 2-1 comeback victory over Germany in the World Cup on Wednesday (November 23).

The four-times champions had looked to be cruising to victory via an Ilkay Guendogan penalty but paid a fatal price for missing chances.

The shock result was a repeat of their 2018 World Cup nightmare when, as defending champions, they lost their opener to Mexico and, after another defeat by South Korea, were condemned to an unheard of group-stage exit.

Germany looked in total command in the Group E clash but, with each missed chance, left the door open for Japan, who showed almost nothing in attack until a series of substitutions injected some energy in the second half.

Doan equalised in the 75th minute before Asano showed lovely control and smashed the winner in from a tight angle – causing an explosion of joy on the Japan bench.

It was a turnaround that looked scarcely believable as Japan struggled to get any foothold for most of the game.

Germany’s early dominance was rewarded when Joshua Kimmich picked out David Raum in acres of space in the box and goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda clumsily brought him down as he turned, with Guendogan dispatching the penalty in the 33rd minute.

Japan stun Germany with late strikes at World Cup

Kai Havertz turned in what he thought was a second in first-half stoppage time and although the assistant referee was about the only person in the Khalifa International stadium not to notice he was a metre offside, VAR duly disallowed it.

There was initially little change to the pattern in the second half as Jamal Musiala shot over after a penetrating run and Guendogan clipped a post.

Gonda then made amends with four successive saves to deny Jonas Hofmann and Serge Gnabry, keeping his side in the game.

Japan stun Germany with late strikes at World Cup

Manuel Neuer, appearing in his fourth World Cup, was also alert to save from Hiroki Sakai and did well again soon after to block from Takumi Minamino, only for fellow substitute Doan to smash in the loose ball.

Suddenly buoyed, Japan pushed on and Asano showed great strength to bring down a high free kick and hold off defender Nico Schlotterbeck and fantastic technique to hammer the ball into the smallest of spaces.

Germany launched all-out attack from then on, to no avail, and now face a potentially must-win game next against Spain.

Japan next face Costa Rica and will already be dreaming of the last 16.

Thailand, Singapore, two other nations to nominate kebaya for Unesco listing

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2022

Singapore will be nominating the kebaya for Unesco’s intangible cultural heritage list in a multinational effort with Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia.

The National Heritage Board (NHB) on Wednesday said this would be Singapore’s first multinational nomination to the Unesco Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and it is slated for submission in March 2023.

The kebaya is a traditional woman’s upper garment that is popular in the region, said the NHB, and it “represents and celebrates the region’s shared history, promotes cross-cultural understanding and continues to be present and actively produced and worn by many communities across Southeast Asia”.

“The kebaya has been, and continues to be, a central aspect in the representation and display of cultural heritage and identity for Malay, Peranakan and other communities in Singapore, and is an integral part of our heritage as a multicultural port city, with links across South-east Asia and the world,” NHB chief executive Chang Hwee Nee said.

She added that the joint nomination “underscores this multiculturalism and our common roots with the region”.

The NHB said Malaysia had proposed and coordinated the multinational nomination and the idea was discussed as part of a series of working meetings among a number of countries in 2022.

Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia agreed to work on the nomination together, said the board, adding that the four countries welcome other countries to join the nomination.

Between August and October, the NHB held six focus group discussions with 48 participants to seek views on the nomination. These included cultural practitioners, cultural association representatives and researchers involved in kebaya production and wearing.

From November 1 to 3, representatives from the NHB and the community attended a workshop organised by Malaysia in Port Dickson, where they discussed the nomination, including what to include in the submission.

Unesco will assess the nomination based on its definition of intangible cultural heritage, and how well each of the four countries will ensure the promotion and transmission of kebaya-related practices, the NHB added.

The result of the nomination is expected to be announced at end-2024.

Kebaya-related crafts and practices were added to the NHB’s intangible cultural heritage inventory in October 2022, joining other elements such as orchid cultivation and soya sauce making on the 102-strong local list.

Kebaya craftsman Ratianah Tahir, who owns Kebaya by Ratianah in Kampong Glam, said the garment has been a staple in her wardrobe since she was young, and she recalls wearing it, especially during festivals and weddings.

The 52-year-old, who has been selling and making kebayas for 18 years, said she hopes the nomination will help raise awareness and increase appreciation for the kebaya and kebaya-wearing among the next generation.

As of 2021, 61 multinational elements have been added to the Unesco list. They include craftsmanship of mechanical watchmaking and art mechanics – a joint nomination by Switzerland and France, as well as Arabic coffee, practised in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar.

Separately, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was inscribed on Unesco’s World Heritage List in 2015.
