GE Technology to use advanced recycling technology at new facility in S Korea
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2022
GE Technology will transform end-of-life plastic waste into Honeywell Recycled Polymer Feedstock (RPF) which can be used to create new plastics using Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology
Honeywell announced that GE Technology will license Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology at their planned advanced recycling facility in South Korea.
The plant will be able to convert mixed waste plastics into Honeywell Recycled Polymer Feedstock (RPF), which will then be used to create new plastics, and help enable the development of a circular economy for plastics.
Production is anticipated to begin in 2025 and is projected to be the first commercialized waste plastics recycling facility to use Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology in Korea.
The planned advanced recycling plant is expected to have the capacity to transform 30,000 metric tons of mixed waste plastics into Honeywell RPF per year.
“Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology not only allows us to reduce waste by expanding the types of plastics that can be recycled but also displaces the need for fossil fuels in the creation of virgin plastics,” said Woo-Hyun Shim, vice president, GE Technology.
“Enabling a circular economy for plastics in Korea is now possible through our licensure with Honeywell and their UpCycle Process Technology.”
Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology is a ready-now technology that utilizes molecular conversion, pyrolysis, and contaminants management technology to convert waste plastic to Honeywell RPF, which is then used to create new plastics.
The UpCycle Process Technology expands the types of plastics that can be recycled to include waste plastic that would otherwise go unrecycled, including coloured, flexible, multilayered packaging, and polystyrene.
When used in conjunction with other chemical and mechanical recycling processes – along with improvements to collection and sorting – Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology has the potential to help recycle nearly 90 % of waste plastics. This would represent a considerable increase in the number of waste plastics that can be turned into polymer feedstock
“GE Technology is the first company in Korea to license Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology, which will build upon GE Technology’s existing capability in waste collection and mechanical recycling,” said Barry Glickman, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Sustainable Technology Solutions.
“Honeywell’s technology can play a key role in driving a circular plastics economy to tackle the global challenge of plastic waste.” Today’s announcement expands the UpCycle Process Technology footprint, building on Honeywell’s recent announcements in the U.S., Spain, Turkey, China, and Egypt.
Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology was created within Honeywell’s Sustainable Technology Solutions (STS) business, which is part of Honeywell UOP.
This latest breakthrough technology builds upon Honeywell’s focus to deliver high-impact, environmentally sustainable solutions for customers and society.
Honeywell committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations and facilities by 2035. This commitment builds on the company’s track record of sharply reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities as well as its decades-long history of innovation to help its customers meet their environmental and social goals.
Approximately 60 % of Honeywell’s new product introduction research and development investment is directed toward products that improve environmental and social outcomes for customers. About GE Technology

South Korean Culture Ministry recommends must-see spots
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2022
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Tourism Organization have unveiled the 100 Must-visit Tourist Spots in Korea list for the years 2023 to 2024.
The list is updated every two years, with the aim to introduce and promote Korea tourism to both Koreans and foreigners.
The latest list includes a total of 61 cultural attractions and 39 natural attractions.
By region, 24 destinations are located in the greater Seoul area, 10 in Gangwon Province, 13 in Chungcheong provinces, 17 in Jeolla provinces, 28 in Gyeongsang Province and six in Jeju island.
A total of 14 spots have been selected six consecutive times since the list was launched in 2013.
Newly chosen destinations include the five Joseon palaces in Seoul, Jeju Olle-gil Trail, Jeonju Hanok Village and Gyeongju Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, destinations that are already well known.
The 33 new additions on the list are evenly scattered out across the country, including Seoul Forest, Changwon Yeojwacheon Stream, Chuncheon Samaksan Moutain Lake Cable Car, Iksan Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri and Tongyeong Dpirang Garden.
The 100 tourist spots in Korea were chosen from 235 destinations through a three-step screening process.
Mobile carriers, navigation apps and social media were used to gather big data while academics, journalists and travel writers took part in the final screening.
The Culture Ministry said it has placed several of the chosen locations in “Travel Hunter K,” a series of Zepeto’s metaverse platform content, for a virtual experience of the destinations.
Next year’s Korea Travel Expo, hosted by the Culture Ministry, will have a hall dedicated solely to introducing the 100 Must-visit Tourist Spots in Korea. The ministry will also support the production of promotional videos of each location for marketing purposes.
“Next year, we will promote both the K-culture popular destinations and the beautiful natural landscapes of the country so that global travellers can think of Korea as a place to go to and experience.” an official at the Culture Ministry’s national tourism policy bureau said.
Pamphlets containing information on the must-visit sites can be obtained at tourist information centres around the country and at information booths in airports and KTX stations.
HiKR Ground, a popular venue for travellers near Gwanghwamun Station operated by the KTO, will also have pamphlets for distribution.
English, Chinese and Japanese versions of the pamphlet will be available as early as mid-January, according to the KTO’s marketing team.
The Korean version is now available online through the Visitkorea website.
Messi’s hometown hopes to witness Argentina’s third World Cup championship
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2022
Residents of Rosario, Lionel Messi’s hometown and Argentina’s third largest city, have expressed their hope to witness the country’s third FIFA World Cup championship with Messi’s superb performance.
Rosario, located 300 kilometres northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital, is the shipping centre for northeastern Argentina. Messi’s childhood home is on the Lavalleja (525), a small street in Rosario.
The two-story building where Messi and his family once lived has become a famous tourist spot now. The large portrait on the wall of the house was painted after Messi had become famous.
The elementary school, No.66 General Las Heras, is the school Messi attended till around age 12.
In 2005, Messi paid a visit to his alma mater, which greatly inspired the students at that time.
“As Messi’s ambitiousness and bravery are what we value the most, our students are always pursuing excellence no matter it comes to sports or study,” said Anastasia, headmistress of the elementary school.
Now, the streets of Rosario are adorned with various World Cup elements, and one of the most striking is Messi’s jersey. Local people are expecting Argentina to win the third World Cup under the leadership of Messi.
“We need a new leader after Diego Maradona to lead Argentina to win another World Cup title. We’ve been craving for such glory to come one more time,” said Manolier, a university student in Rosario.
“It’s going to be a tough final, but I believe Messi and Argentina will win it,” said Marcelo, a local resident.
Argentina will play France in the World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday night, as both sides aim to win the trophy for the third time.
Proud Morocco want to build African legacy after World Cup run
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2022
Croatia ended their World Cup campaign with the pride of claiming third place in a 2-1 win against Morocco, which marked the end of a journey but also promised a bright future, coach Zlatko Dalic said on Saturday.
Croatia, runners-up in 2018, prevailed with goals by Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Orsic to end their World Cup on a high as Luka Modric possibly bid farewell to the soccer extravaganza.
Croatia beat Brazil in the quarter-finals, but for Dalic, Saturday’s bronze medal game was the highlight of their tournament.
“In any case, the last match we played. If you remember, I had said if we had lost, it would have been a disaster,” said Dalic, who paid tribute to former Serbia midfielder Sinisa Mihajlovic after his death on Friday.
“It was a difficult, great match. I want to extend my congratulations to Morocco, they put up a great fight until the last minute, despite the fatigue.
“They can be proud, they remind me of us four years ago. We’re among the best teams in the world.”
Croatia can now look forward to the future with confidence.
“It’s the end of a cycle for us, the end of a journey. Tonight’s match and the win is the moment of the tournament for us,” said Dalic.
“Yes, this is the last World Cup for some of my players today due to their age. But we have young players in the team and it is great for Croatia,” he added, referring to a man of the match Josko Gvardiol, but also Lovro Majer and Borna Sosa.
“We have many of the players on the bench, too.”
Dalic, however, is still counting on his old guard for the Nations League and the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
“We would not have been that far without our older players. We have a great future, and Croatia has nothing to fear. Is it the end of an era for a generation? Well, we still have the Nations League and the Euro qualifiers. All I know is that Croatia has a bright future.”
Meanwhile, despite losing Morocco broke new ground for Africa by finishing in the final four. Head coach Walid Regragui promised that his players will still go home to a hero’s welcome
“We wanted to please our fans. We’re still happy, we’re among the four best teams in the world,” Regragui said.
“We provided everyone with a good show, we never gave up. Congratulations to Croatia, they deserve their third place.”
By the 67th minute, Morocco had made all five of their substitutions. With starting centre-back duo, Romain Saiss and Nayef Aguerd, nursing injuries on the bench, Jawad El Yamiq became their fourth centre-back to bid the tournament goodbye when he came off.
“Physically it was difficult, our players got tired, it was intense,” Morocco coach Walid Regragui said.
Morocco will leave Qatar proud and happy after becoming the first African or Arabic team to reach the last four at a World Cup but they should strive for more in the future, coach Walid Regragui said on Saturday.
Regragui lauded his young squad saying they did everything he asked of them in the tournament, having beaten elite teams including Belgium, Portugal and Spain on their way to the semi-finals.
“We wanted to bring joy to our fans but we’re still happy, we’re among the four best teams in the world,” Regragui told reporters.
“We provided everyone with a good show, we never gave up. Congratulations to Croatia, they deserve their third place. We are a young team that is still learning.”
Regragui said that his side, who had the best defensive record in Qatar before losing 2-0 to France on Wednesday, felt the physical toll of an intense tournament after playing their seventh match.
“Sure, I am a little disappointed by this second consecutive defeat, but we did everything that we could,” Regragui said.
“Physically it was difficult, our players got tired, it was very intense. We wanted to make the fans more proud than they already were, that’s it.”
Morocco’s campaign in Qatar gave African football a huge morale boost after none of the five African sides made it out of the group phase in Russia in 2018.
“I think we showed our strength, we showed that African football is prepared to face the top teams in the world with efficiency and playing at the highest level,” Regragui told a news conference.
“We probably will only realise what we accomplished in Qatar after four years, in the next World Cup. The pressure will also be greater, there will be expectations around us. It’s natural.
“We made a great achievement but we want to do it again. It will not be easy but that’s the objective.”
Regragui said he hoped their performance in Qatar would leave a lasting legacy for African football.
“Through experience, you get stronger and I hope we learn and grow and build in our children in Africa a football DNA that lasts,” he said.
“We have now allowed children to dream, dream of being footballers and going to the World Cup. That is priceless. As for the impact on our country, we have set the bar high.
“I’m sure that in 15 years an African team will win the World Cup.”
